I have a primarily wired network with all the main devices physically connected to the router. What's a good router for a 300 Mbps connection?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:23 PM PDT

My current router drops my download to around 40-50 Mbps where connecting directly to the modem gives me almost 300. My old router is very old... 2010-2012 range.

    Whole house wiring

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:09 AM PDT

Sorry for the dumb question but I am building a new home and have a few spots in different rooms where I want to be wired internet. All of the wires run to one location in my basement.

My ISP will only do internet to one jack in the house or they'll charge me $75/hr for set up for all jacks. Could I just connect all the wires in the basement to the router/switch and have internet in all the jacks?

Help setting up subdomain with nginx

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:25 PM PDT

I'm pretty new at this, I apologize for any noobish situations in advance!

I've setup an Ubuntu Server at home on an old laptop, i've got a website running on it and managed to get it on the internet through port forwarding. I've also got a Jellyfin server running, both the website and Jellyfin running through nginx. I bought a domain name through Namecheap and pointed the domain to my IP address, all works fine. The IP is forwarding port 80 on the laptop so the domain opens up the website through nginx without issues.

I've set up nginx so that when I recieve jellyfin.mydomain.com it opens up the Jellyfin server, I've also setup the subdomain through Namecheap so that jellyfin.mydomain.com points to my IP address. This is where the issue arises, as opening the subdomain opens my website.

    What am I doing wrong?

Ps. Tried to setup a DDns on my router but Namecheap isn't given as an option and there is no custom DDns provider option.

    Piggybacking off fios wifi extender

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:20 PM PDT

I plan run ethernet from my FIOS router on the first floor down to my basement and hooked that into a FIOS wifi extender. My question is if I hardwire something into the extender do I get hardwire speed or still wifi speeds? I also wanted to know if I could run ethernet through walls to the extender and piggy back off that in the network.

    TP-Link Powerline Adapter Problems

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:58 PM PDT

    Hello,

So I recently just purchased the TP-LINK AV600 Powerline Adapter (TL-PA4010 KIT) and I have set them up and it is working; however, it is not connected to the proper router. I think the problem here is that we have our main router, a second identical one acting as an extender, and an Apple AirPort Time Capsule all going at the same time. The issue is not with the extender but the Time Capsule. I have my powerline adapters plugged directly into our main router but on my computer, I am not getting the name of our main router nor the performance. How can I fix this?

Test just once end of a cat6 cable

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:57 PM PDT

Im going to be running 10 cat 6 cables throughout my attic to different parts of my house for outdoor security cameras. Since some of these mounts are high and in tough spaces it won't be easy to terminate. The other end will be going all the way downstairs to my patch panel to be terminated all at one time. Is there any way to test the end I put the rj45 in that goes in the camera without terminating in my patch panel?

    Fiber between buildings?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:56 PM PDT

    Hey!

So I have two buildings on my property, my house and a large garage/barn type building. I'm looking into converting the loft into a mancave/tv/computer room. Short of the actual construction, I need a way to reliably get internet from the house to the barn.

Years ago when we redid the house, we installed an extra 3/4" PVC conduit between the two buildings, anticipating having to pull some sort of data cable. The distance between both buildings is about 75' and the conduit is about 4' down, total length about 90', give or take, between where both ends would terminate.

I'm torn about running fiber between the two, Cat 6a, and using a wireless bridge.

The cost of running OM3 Fiber, at least the cable, seems to be about the same or less than Cat 6a (both outdoor grade). I've been looking at OM3 preterminated with LC connectors. The biggest cost factor it looks like to me is the cost of new switches and SFPs. I've read to stay away from media converters. One thing to consider is I will need another switch/access point no matter what.

Using Cat 6a is another option, but I'm worried about electrical noise and proper grounding. I live in a fairly lightning prone area (Southwestern Ontario). Both the conduit for the electrical and the data conduit sit right next to each other.

Third option could potentially be the easiest, some sort of wireless bridge. I was looking at Ubiquiti options, and their 60Ghz building to building link is about $500 and seems to have 1Gb throughput, but upon looking around I found that MikroTik offers a similar product for around $200CAD. My biggest concern for this option is latency, reliability, and throughput).

I would guesstimate that the bandwidth required would be about the same in both the barn and the house (1-2 TVs, gaming, netflix, phones, laptops, etc). We have a 150Mb cable connection at the house and IPTV (Vmedia). I'd love to upgrade to a Fiber connection when it becomes available here.

Maybe I'm totally out to lunch on the fiber option, but I like it the best, though I've never worked with fiber before. If I went with fiber, I was looking at using two MikroTik RB260GS with the appropriate SFPs, and OM3 MM Fiber, and probably a Edgerouter Lite in the house along with my old wireless router as an access point. I would likely install a Unifi access point in the barn.

Any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions? I'm trying to keep costs as low as practicable, but I'm willing to spend a little more if it means a more future proofed or reliable project.

    Thanks!

    [Help] Connecting 2 homes/garage

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:43 PM PDT

Download degraded. Upload fine. Used to get 700+ Mbps down. Laptop plugged in to access panel outside home with 5ft ethernet cable. Why would the download be degraded but not the up? CenturyLink says they are not throttling. Two tech out so far. Third comes tomorrow.

Getting 5-40 Mbps down. 900+ up. Has been gigabit for years, until two days ago.

Questions on extended runs of Ethernet line

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:41 PM PDT

Today I finally got to install my 50 meters of direct burial cat7 line. Upstream it's a Viasat rg1100n-030 modem and downstream of it is a Belkin AC1750 Dual Band gigabit router. Directly after installing and burying the line, I did a speed test at 4:30pm. That resulted in 24mbps download, 0.12 upload, 646 ping (it's always been that high).

Fast forward to 10pm and download isn't even 2 mb and upload didn't even register. Ping was stupid high as well, being over 2500. I restarted the modem. I know my line is good as I got normal numbers earlier today. Is this specific modem not able to support 50m of line?

Being it's satellite internet, speeds fluctuate all the time but it's never been this bad. Any help is appreciated. I buried this line out to my garage due to the WiFi range extender route not working.

netgear router showing as shared device?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:10 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I just got a netgear nighthawk X4S (R7800) and it keeps showing as a shared server(?) in my macbook's finder. I looked online and I think it might be because of readyshare.

So I tried disabling readyshare but in the ReadyShare Storage -> Advanced Settings, everything is disabled except for "Network Neighborhood/MacShare" which I cannot disable. I uncheck enabled and when I click apply, it just enables it again. I've tried restarting the router as well to no avail. I'm currently on the latest firmware V1.0.2.68.

Does anyone know how to disable the router as a shared device because I don't want my router showing up as a shared device!

    Nighthawk c7000v2 problems

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:58 PM PDT

Just replaced an old modem with the Nighthawk c7000v2. The 5ghz keeps dropping on one computer with a VPN. Speeds have been slow. Contacted Netgear support and they told me to have ISP reflash the firmware but the ISP says it fine.

I've tried rebooting, refreshing, changing the channels. I'm not sure what else to do. Any ideas?

Netgear R7000 possible brick? I tried every unbrick method I could find. Please help!

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:56 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I downloaded DD-WRT to my Netgear R7000, but I wanted to try FreshTomato. I was in the process of downgrading back to STOCK firmware to then move forward with the FreshTomato install.

After flashing an old Netgear firmware (1.0.0.96) the router seem to run as normal, I was able to ping. However, after 10 plus minutes of the system being up I still couldn't access the GUI. So before attempting to tftp and reflash the firmware I thought maybe a simple, off/on reset would work.

I was very wrong and my router hasn't work since. The ONLY light ON is an amber Power LED indictor. I tried 30/30/30 reset, tftp both windows & client, and every method I could find online. I even tried calling Netgear but they just hung up on me.

Please help, many thanks in advanced. This is my last resort!

PS. When attempting to tftp I wasn't able to get the amber light to start flashing at least 10 times; the indictors temporarily turned white, disappear, then the solid amber Power LED light remains.

    Need Help with Access Points

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:33 PM PDT

    Hello,

I live in a 3 floor house and my modem/router is in the basement. I have the Homehub 3000 from Bell. I have great wifi signal in the basement but poor wifi signals on the second floor and even worse on the third floor. I've been reading about how I can fix this issue and came across the topic of setting up access points around the house.

I am a noob at this and no idea how to set this up, so I came here for help and advice. I also don't want to rent Bell's wifi pods.

I am looking for a budget friendly access point and how easy is it to set up? Can I just buy them and quickly set it up or do I need additional stuff?

using an old router to facilitate wireless printing

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:29 PM PDT

    What i have.

Fios Quantum Gateway- main router acting as DHCP connects to Fios ONT

TP-link archer c5 ac1200- old router currently not doing anything. Has usb ports.

HP deskjet f4480 Printer- only has a usb connection

    Current set up.

Medium sized apartment the Fios router is set up in the living room centrally located to the entire apartment. The WiFi coverage is fine and so is our speed no complaints there. My printer is in my room above my desk. my Laptop usually lives on my desk connected to a USB-C hub that the printer connects to. When my printer is working properly and not begging for ink i can print to my hearts content from my desk.

What i would like to do.

Sometime i use my laptop in the living room or i have something on my phone that i want to print. If i want to print i have to take my laptop back into my room and plug my printer in. And i cant print from my phone at all. So i would like to us the TP-Link router as means of wireless printing.

What i have investigated so far.

I am pretty green in terms of networking. But what i have tried is using the TP-link as a bridge but fairly quickly into that i realized i was going to be creating an entirely different network with its own wifi. I would like to continue using the same fios wifi as the speed tests were faster without having to first go through the TP-link network and than to the Fios and out to the internet.

Configuring the TP-link as an access point requires using a hard line connection between the two routers which i don't want to do. Wires running through doorways and what not is ugly.

The latest thing that i have just discovered is using a Mesh Wifi network which seems like what i'm asking for. But i have 0 idea where to begin with that and it doesn't seem like its friendly between different brands of equipment. It seems like those networks at least the home ones tend to come as packaged deals like the samsung version or require compatible software between different models like the Asus AiMesh.

Is what i'm asking for possible? I live in NYC so this whole wireless printing this is really just something to keep me busy while i'm currently out of work during the pandemic. Also because i'm out of work i'm not looking to purchase anything to expensive to accomplish this really not very important goal of wireless printing.

    Thoughts?

Is this setup possible?

Getting tired of Synology RT2600AC, looking for alternatives

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:01 PM PDT

    Hello

It looks like I might need a new router because my Synology RT2600AC is not giving me the max speeds I expect from it.

Background: I have Gigabit service with Comcast. My modem is a Netgear CM1000, router is RT2600AC and I use Plume Pods for WiFi mesh. Previously, I was using an ASUS RT-N66U. The WiFi on the routers were always disabled as I had the Plumes for that. I also have a Fingbox. Both the Fingbox and Plume do random speed tests from time to time.

Reason I'm looking to switch out the Synology is because I'm not getting Gig speeds, be it hardwired or wireless. Both Fing and Plumes are saying I'm not getting anything more than 100Mbps down though my upload is close to 40Mbps (which is expected). Checking online, it seems like this issue started with version 1.2.3 which sounds plausible because I only recall this issue in the last several months (have had the Synology for 18 months now).

What I like about the Synology is that it allows for a failover internet connection and hoping to get that in the next router. I tried going with an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X since all I needed was routing function but that UI was not user-friendly :(

Any suggestions on fixing the Synology or a replacement router for it?

    Thank you!

Paying for 200mbs speeds. What’s the best router?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:51 PM PDT

Hey guys! Recently purchased a home and the only good internet provider for the house was spectrum. Went ahead and bought the 200mbs speed and went with the "get your own router" option. I'm trying to figure out what's the best router to get for full coverage? Or if I'd have to get some sort of mesh network. I'm looking to cover roughly 4000 square feet. Planning to put the router in a central location on the second floor. Any help is good help! Thanks in advance!

Is there any use in getting a WiFi 6 router for a predominantly WiFi 5 system house? Is there any downfall if I do do that?

Nighthawk AX12 vs. AX12 tri-band, which to buy?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 04:21 AM PDT

I have been doing research for about 2 hours now, and I can not find anything particularly definitive on which of these is genuinely a better purchase. Assume I can afford either. Assume I am already using one or more wifi6 compatible devices. Assume I will be adding both a PS5 and XBOX One Series X at the end of the year. I am currently using the Netgear XR500. I know the AX12 has a faster processor than the tri-band does, and HIGHER speed LAN ports (which does not matter to me). Being that I am going to be adding more wi-fi 6 devices, does that mean I should just go with the tri-band? Can anyone here directly compare the two, having used both? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Would There Be Any Issues Creating A Mesh With A Network Switch?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:18 PM PDT

Like if coming out of the main pod it could feed into a network switch that would split the connection for the other pods. Would that make any conflicts?

Why is my netgear extender suddenly bad for gaming

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:14 PM PDT

My extender's model is "NETGEAR Wn2500rp Dual Band Wi-fi Range Extender With 4-ports" and I never recall its connectivity being so bad when it comes to gaming. For light web browsing or streaming videos it works fine. The room I play games in is quite literally the furthest from our main router, so I placed the extender somewhere in the middle, and have tried numerous locations. Nothing is working.

On a great day I'll have like 30mbps download speed and 20mbps upload speed. This isn't horrible and some games I can't tell the difference, but there are others where it's obvious and frustrating. Please, help me out anyway possible..

I can't seem to get two ports forwarded through a Technicolor C1100T.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:12 PM PDT

I had CenturyLink install fiber to my house, last week. Over the weekend I moved everything over from the ComCast cable internet I was dumping, and aside from one issue with port forwarding, everything went fine.

Yesterday I cancelled my account with ComCast, and today I tried to resolve my issues with port forwarding.

I have two ports I want to route from the broader internet to machines in my local network. Using the C1100T's web interface, I've been able to configure either one of them, but not both.

    This works:

LAN IP Protocol Ports Forwarded Remote Defined 192.168.0.4 TCP, UDP 9920 No

    And this works:

LAN IP Protocol Ports Forwarded Remote Defined 192.168.0.4 TCP, UDP 9921 No

Adding them separately works only for one and not the other:

LAN IP Protocol Ports Forwarded Remote Defined 192.168.0.4 TCP, UDP 9921 No 192.168.0.4 TCP, UDP 9920 No

Adding both ports as one rule still only works for one and not the other:

LAN IP Protocol Ports Forwarded Remote Defined 192.168.0.4 TCP, UDP 9920 thru 9921 No

And defining the remote ports doesn't help:

    LAN IP Protocol Ports Forwarded Remote Defined 192.168.0.4 TCP, UDP 9920 thru 9921 192.168.0.4 9920 - 9921

CenturyLink's help page is of limited help.

    Question about testing network jacks

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:09 PM PDT

I am running a bunch of Cat6 though my house which was built in the 80s. I need to get ethernet upstairs and down for FIOS wifi extenders. I plan to just use complete cat6 cable and plugging them into female adapted ethernet jack plates. I will then connect the FIOS extenders to those jacks with 3 ft cat 6 cable. My question is how do I check the jacks to know they are getting internet from the original router? I have not been able to find a good answer to this from Google.
