How do I back up data on Linux? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 01:46 PM PST From what I can gather, timshift only takes system snapshots. If I want to back up my files, what tool is best? Every time I Google it, I keep getting pointed to timehsift... [link] [comments] |
Is Linux better choice for low-end laptop? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:40 PM PST Hey there, iam quite knowledgable about IT overall. Ever since i always run Windows, but i know about cons of Linux. While ago, i bought almost cheapest notebook mainly to school. It is Asus VioBook E403NA - 32GB SSD, 4GB RAM and 2,4 GHz. It do the job of writing, but when it comes to lets say browsing web, the temperature of CPU gets to 65c and CPU begin "throttling", everything is laggy even now, when i have 2 tabs open, writing here and Windows downloading update, the input lag of keyboard is almost a second. I was thinking, that Linux (or some instance of it) MUST be more CPU savy and can manage tasks and processes better. Moreover, the sh*tty W10 takes up more than half of HDD (now i know that 32GB SSD was bad choice, but i thought they wouldnt let out piece of hardware, which cant properly update new Windows version due to no HDD space left). The thing i dont get is that on my old PC (that can still handle a lot of new games), i almost never run full CPU speed, which is 2,44GHz (Intel 2 Quad Core, 0,14Ghz more than laptop) and i never see any CPU throttling, even when browsing a lot of tabs or gaming (it may be the thing of better cooling than on laptop). So i dont get, why laptop runs almost all the time full speed, why it stutters and lags most of the time when browsing web using Firefox. I know i must let go of Office in case of installing Linux, but are there any other cons? And will it be noticable change in perfomance? TL;DR: So is it better for me as really low-end notebook user use some instance of Linux? If yes, what would you recomend? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:43 AM PST Hello everyone, I have just spent the last 12 hours tearing my hair out trying to set up a windows10/ubuntu installation on an SD card on an HP Envy x360 using UEFI and Secure Boot, and I finally got it working. The Problem: My Laptop cannot see the SDCARD reader as it is an internal connection and drivers for it aren't loaded until after the boot loader has kicked in. Therefore we cannot have the Linux Boot partition on an SD card. But we have little space on the main hard drive due to Windows being installed there and we cannot expand it, so we must put most of linux onto an SD Card (as it would be inconvenient to have a USB sticking out of our laptop all the time). Here is how: Note: This guide is not a basic tutorial, if you don't know how to do a NORMAL install of Ubuntu, go read that first as I will only be mentioning the differences.
If any of this didn't work, please feel free to reply here or message me and I'll help you out if I can. [link] [comments] |
Trying to dual-boot Zorin OS and WIndows 10 (help) Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:56 AM PST Hey - just found this subreddit and hopefully I'm in the right place. Apologies if not! So to begin, I will say that my computer skills are intermediate or maybe sub intermediate. I build my own PC's and am willing to put in the time to scour the internet to solve my problems but I don't really have a deep understanding of windows even, and 0 knowledge of Linux - this is my first real attempt at it. That out of the way my issue is that when I boot up, the Zorin installer works fine, I can try without installing fine, but when I go to install there is no option to Install Alongside. I can either erase drive and install or "something else". I had seen a lot of people saying that the issue might be that windows wasn't fully shutdown - so I made sure after shutdown to turn off the power supply and unplug it, wait 15 minutes and then power the computer back on. Same issue. One user on YouTube had suggested Trying Zorin OS 12.4 and then upgrading to 15.1 off of that, but I had no luck with that either. I tried the "something else" option following a guide (it's nice that I can test and then run the installer so that I could have firefox on another monitor with the guide open) but unfortunately somehow I managed to wipe the drive of windows in the process - despite the guide being how to install alongside. Clearly I did something wrong and fortunately I had a backup but I am sort of gun-shy about trying that method again. I have 3 Drives - 2 HDDs and an SSD - someone had asked about that before so I figured it was relevant information. Hopefully I am not doing this wrong and someone can help. All the same - thank you in advance even for reading this far! [link] [comments] |

Can I, and how can I install Ubuntu on my other drive Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:26 AM PST So, I wanted to try Linux (Ubuntu distro) but I am really afraid of deleting some files and generally messing something up. I want to use my 2nd drive (SSD,32GB, not used at all) for this purpose. I want to use Ubuntu as a second OS and if possible have a window pop up everytime I turn my laptop on that asks me what OS I want to launch. If there is something important about my PC or what I want to do missing just ask me, I'm really nervous now [link] [comments] |
Where to get the complete ISO file for Debian Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:54 PM PST I tried downloading Linux but because my laptop disconnected from WiFi during the boot up it couldn't boot up hence I'm looking for the complete version so that I don't need to use internet, I'm a noob at Linux so I don't know where to look Thank you for the help :) [link] [comments] |
Wired connection not working on Pop Os, but fine on Windows Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:33 PM PST Title say it all, I'm new to linux and was distro hopping to see what suits me better, but i always had problems with the ethernet connection. I've trying unpluging and plugging the cable back on, without success. There's no problem with Windows tho. Using PopOS 19.10 nvidia gtx 1060 3g i5-6400 [link] [comments] |
Installing Linux without formatting my drive Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:16 PM PST I want to install linux mint from Windows 7 without having to format the hole drive ,and also without dual booting. Can I format the (C:) partition and install Linux on it and leave my other two partitions and not format them? [link] [comments] |
256Gb or 128gb for a boteble usb drive? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 08:01 AM PST Is it worth investing an extra 30 bucks for double storage or should I just buy the 128gb version. I'm thinking to put everything on the usb drive so I have everything on it and not only the operating system. Will 300mb/second read be fast for booting linux manjaro? [link] [comments] |
Need help with audio (JACK, pulse) [AskUbuntu link] Posted: 27 Feb 2020 11:31 AM PST Here is the question I'm asking on AskUbuntu. I've installed and run a few JACK packages to help me pipe audio from Skype into a broadcast software (Mixxx). All working great, but when I switch Mixxx to "Jack Audio API" I can't use my USB microphone. I need help figuring out how to add it to JACK as a device, either so I can use it as an input device in Mixxx or pipe it into a JACK sink and input it into Mixxx that way. Anyone out there familiar with this? Much thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:42 AM PST I'm a long time windows user, but I've heard that Linux is more transparent customizable and secure than windows. What should I do to start learning all about how to use and make a computer running Linux? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 11:06 AM PST I have a GT 630 and am on Linux Mint 19.3. nvidia-smi is not working, I mean it is, but not displaying utilization(screenshot). Is there any way I can do it? When I was using windows Afterburner worked like a charm and I never had a problem with it. Thanks. Edit: For anyone with the problem in the future, I just installed gwe (GreenWithEnvy) and that somehow works without the smi working so yeah. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 10:10 AM PST I want to use Ubuntu. But I'm confused about which version of Ubuntu to choose? Any kind of help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Recently got Lubuntu for my dying old laptop Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:38 AM PST I have zero experience with Linux but I decided to get lubuntu for my old laptop that was kinda struggling with windows 10 Overall, it's pretty confusing since I'm not used to it but itis noticeably faster. The only problem is that I don't know where and what to start learning I'd like some guidance on the essential things you guys feel every Linux user should know and where I should go in order to learn more about it in a more systematic way [link] [comments] |
i have a shitty laptop with a shitty hard disk Posted: 27 Feb 2020 06:21 AM PST i'm wondering if i'll get a faster browser experience using linux, and better framerate in games [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:46 AM PST I am currently dual booting linux (Ubuntu) with windows on two separate drives. I know that you need to turn off fast startup if you want to share files between windows and linux. But I don't share files between linux and windows. So I kept that fast startup enabled. But what I noticed is when I boot into linux after a restart for the second time consecutively and then boot into windows. Windows instead of using fast startup it just starts normally. So I was wondering is something happening wrong. And should I disable fast startup? Or I am good to go. I have windows and linux installed on two separate hard drives. And I switch between them from boot option (f12) and I don't use grub to switch between both os. And one more thing I want to ask. In the past my windows installation was corrupted twice so I am super afraid of using grub to boot into windows. Will using grub to boot into windows which is on the other hard drive corrupts the windows boot file or mess with windows installation ? [link] [comments] |
Ethernet broken every time I boot live usb Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:08 AM PST For some reason every time I boot my PC using a live usb, the Ethernet stops working. Rebooting into Windows or any other Linux distro stops recognizing my Ethernet too It comes back only if I leave my PC off for a few minutes... Does anyone know anything about this? Does a CLI install mean you can't have GUI Programs? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:55 AM PST This may be a stupid question but I am interested in trying to learning linux but also forcing myself to use the CLI, I was wondering if I'd still be able to use browsers and watch videos amongst other graohical applications. Edit: Grammar and Spelling Edit: I have not yet installed linux, this is just a general query. I have very little knowledge on linux so I will not be able to understand most technical terms.
