NVMe M.2 SSD vs. Intel SSD + 32 GB Intel Optane Memory?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:47 AM PST

I'm customizing a laptop and have the option to choose between a (1 TB PClea NVMe M.2 SSD) or (1 TB Intel SSD + 32 GB Intel® Optane memory). From my limited understanding, I thought Optane memory acted as a cache for HDDs, so I'm unsure why it's being bundled in this way. They're offered at the same price point, though, so unless the 1 TB NVMe M.2 SSD is just vastly superior, it seems that a 1 TB Intel SSD with an extra 32 GB cache would be the better deal. Please enlighten me to the differences so I can decide

Is it safe to use my Ram and SSD?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 01:00 PM PST

My notebook got an electrical discharge and the motherboard short out. Since it was a problem from the charger the company fixed and changed all the burned components (motherboard), except for the extra Ram and SSD that i bought separately. Is it safe for me to use it since maybe it's short out?

Can I use my gaming laptop extensively with no battery?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 11:54 AM PST

Hey, I have the MSI GS63vr 6rf. I had to get my battery taken out due to inflammation of the battery (I had it for a while). I currently cannot get a replacement battery, and need it desperately for schooling, gaming, and video editing since it's the only computer I have. My concerns relate to using it, as I would have normally; Heavy usage with editing videos, and games, while also doing projects I need for school.

Can it possibly electrocute me while using it since there is no battery? I understand that if I unplug or lose power without shutting the laptop completely down, I can potentially lose my progress, and or corrupt something in my laptop. Also I will be using it for a while until I am able to build a computer..

Thank you for reading and sorry for the formatting as I am posting from mobile.

Wanting to buy a new laptop but can’t decide on what to get

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 11:44 AM PST

Ok so I'm not sure if this is even the right sub for it but I'm looking into buying a new laptop. I currently have a little dell and it's ok, super slow. I'm trying to decide to get apple or another brand. I have a lot of apple products and personally love apple but I know computer wise a lot of people don't like them. I don't really know anything about computers so I'm wondering if it would be worth it to get the new MacBook Air or should I go with another brand? I'm a college student so I would want my laptop to have good performance because the one I have right now takes like 10 minutes to start up and I practically use a computer daily.

    Asus ZenBook Pro 14

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 10:31 AM PST

Is it a good laptop? It has a GTX 1050 and an i5 8250U, which seems like very good specs for such a slim laptop. It's also got 2 screens. Does it have a problem I should know about?

    Alt-Codes in tactile numpad

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:55 AM PST

I have a ASUS Zephyrus laptop and this model doesn't have a proper numpad, instead, it the trackpad doubles has one. That being, I'm having troubles with inserting Unicode characters using Alt-Codes.

    Pressing Alt + Code Number
doesn't work correctly. It works if I'm press the numbers (all at the same time) and then Alt, but not the other way around (as it should be)

Is this normal for integrated numpad, if not how do I fix this issue?

Looking for a solid laptop that can handle Minecraft.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:33 AM PST

    And that's pretty much it!

My younger sister is going to start college soon, and she needs a new laptop because hers just died.

    Requirements:

    ~Can handle Minecraft

    ~Touch screen!

~Moderately lightweight if she will be lugging it across campus

    ~Basic word processing software

    ~Under $800

I'm probably thinking too hard about this because she doesn't want/need anything too crazy, but I want to get her a good one! Thanks for any and all help!

Cracked Screen on HP Pavilion 15-CS0053CL

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:20 AM PST

My screen recently cracked on my HP Pavilion 15-CS0053CL I am either thinking about going to get it respires at a shop or repair it myself. The screen resolution is 1366x768 The size of the screen is 15.6 inches I am wondering if my laptop uses a 40 pin or 30 pin connector so I can purchase the right screen. Please let me know. Also, if anyone could recommend me a good touchscreen replacement that will meet the current screen resolution and size and that will work on my laptop. I would appreciate it.

Can you help me decide between eluktronics max-15 or eluktronics mag-15/xmg fusion 15?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:18 AM PST

Hi, i'm looking to buy a new laptop for college (computer science) as well as a bit of gaming.
I can't choose between these two laptops:

    https://www.skikk.eu/laptops/15gk0y (price fully configured: €1699)
    (= eluktronics max-15)

    https://bestware.com/en/xmg-fusion-15.html (price fully configured: €1755)
    (= eluktronics mag-15)

    Important differences i noticed:
    - Price
    - GPU, max-15 has an rtx-2060 while mag-15 has a gtx-1660ti in my configuration
    - Battery, mag-15 has a much bigger battery
    - Thunderbolt, max-15 has no thunderbolt (Not that important for me at this time, but you never know)

So in short I can get a laptop with better gpu, but worse battery life and no thundebolt for €1699
Or a laptop with a worse GPU but (much) better battery life and with thunderbolt for €1755.

Which one would you choose and why? And are there any more important differences I should consider?

Dell or Lenovo or: $1k CAD

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 06:43 AM PST

I can't find the 'ideal' laptop.

I would like to avoid a "PWM" laptop but would like a decent screen. It doesn't have to be a $200 screen but just not undesirable. I have the impression that the standard 250 nits screen of Thinkpad t480 is pretty bad. Is that true? I got this impression from user reviews.

The Latitude 14 7400 and Latitude 7490 fhd screens aren't much better? The brightness isn't too good?

The laptops are available at various vendors in the $1k price range but they all have the standard fhd screens. I can't find any advanced screens.

The T490 has a lp-fhd configuration but I can't find anyone selling those except an expensive one from Lenovo themselves. I can't consider anything over $1100 ish.

I even looked at the XPS 15 but it has PWM.

    Any suggestions?

Help! Is this a good deal? (Dell Inspiron 15 5591)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 06:41 AM PST

    Dell Inspiron 15 5591 - $539

A lot of similar Dell laptops are getting a lot of attention on a particularly popular deal website but this one is not getting any though it is similar in price and specs (from my understanding). Am I missing something and is this overall a good deal for someone looking for a solid laptop that will last me a long time for general use (no gaming).

Why does my computer suddenly have no audio output device??

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:52 AM PST

I have a MSI G63 Stealth laptop. I'm not very tech savvy first off. But I have spent the last 4 hours resetting and trying everything I've seen online and I just cannot figure out what the hell happened. Everything was fine I closed out of my windows except for firefox but nothing was active. It was sitting there so I close the lid. I reopened it and the screen won't turn on. So I hold the power button restart it and now it's as if my internal speakers are disconnected. I've reset it multiple times. But still nothing. Please anyone help.
