Which processor should I get for new 2 in 1??

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 11:53 AM PST

sorry , if this is beat to death but new here.

Im looking at getting a new 2 in 1. Looking at HP Spectre 15 or Lenovo c940 15

So I'm looking at either getting the 10th gen intel i7-10510U or the 9th gen i7-9750H, .

    16gb ram, SSD .

My primary CPU need is for multitrack audio recording and editing. Reason, Protools etc. Some light video editing in Premier. and internet etc.

Which CPU is going to be faster/better for me? I'm a little confused on the the 4 core but more turbo boost vs 6 cores and less boost.. ? seems like the 6 core is faster?

and more over, is it worth it get the 6 core? its a couple hunderd $ more

    thx in advance

(or what about an 8th gen i7 6 core?..?)

Replacing battery on Dell XPS 15 9560

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 02:05 PM PST

    Hi all!

I am currently in the process of replacing battery on my laptop. I have read that this model of dell laptop came with two variants of the battery. I want to know if there is any way of checking which type of battery do I have installed in the laptop without opening casing.

    Thanks for all replys.

I noticed the screen is 120hz while the GTX/RTX Intel laptops are 144hz.

I wonder how this will compete? Anyone seen benchmarks. Certinaly a lot cheaper than Intel i7-9570h

    GTX 1660T.I/ RTX 2060 offerings.

Current U series whisky lake laptops, why are they so shit?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 11:55 AM PST

So I have a HP Probook 450 g6 with an i5 8265u I had this laptop given to me and upgraded it with a FHD 1080p ips screen so I could do some work in davinci resolve.

I was immediately disappointed with it when I pressed render and the clock speed fell from a zippy 4ghz to base, no it wasn't overheating just past its power limit of 15w. My liquid metal cooling had plenty to give it was only at 60C but I couldn't even use throttlestop or XTU to lower the voltage and claim back some mhz.

Annoyingly my 2014 6yo MacBook Pro 13" was able to keep up even exceeding the render speed as Apple don't limit the frequency until thermal max at 105c

Lenovo Legion Y530 vs Microsoft surface laptop for studying.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 11:52 AM PST

I'm planning to study physics and I was considering to buy one of them (the price for each is 550 and 600 euros, they are used ofc.) but not sure which one would be better as they are good in their own ways.

Taking a year to work before law school and old laptops are dying. Stick with macbooks or switch to PC?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 11:50 AM PST

As post says I am finishing undergrad and moving to DC to work before law school. Desperately need a new laptop and someone on facebook is selling a 2017 Macbook 12" for 500. Should I take that deal, buy a new macbook pro(my macbook pro 2012 lasted forever), or move to a pc laptop?. Will mainly be used for lots of reading, writing, and maybe some light gaming(old total wars).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Budget would be 1000-1500, but would appreciate good bang for buck value.

Bought a second hand laptop with a battery capacity of 88%, is this still okay? Also should I keep charging levels between 20 and 80% like smartphones?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 11:42 AM PST

My first laptop, hence the questions. I know that the battery should be kept betweend 20 and 80% for longevity for smartphones, does the same go for laptops? Did a battery test and the max capacity is at 88%, is this still good?

Should I be worried? I dropped my laptop and this purple/yellow spot appeared. The touch screen in that spot still works fine. There is a small dent in the laptop on that corner but nothing huge. It's just on the corner it hit the ground on.

Looking for laptop in $500-$700 USD range

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 10:11 AM PST

Was helping look for a laptop for my girlfriend, her main uses would be playing sims 4 and running basic Microsoft office programs for school. She said it'd be nice if it had a backlit keyboard and small bezel like the dell xps infinity edge but isn't a necessity. Looking more towards $500 range but doesn't mind going up to $700 if its worth it. Prefer something with a nice display and ssd. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, there are so many options its pretty crazy tbh. Thank you!

    Stains on trackpad?

These weird stains appeared on my Matebook X Pro trackpad a while ago. I've tried magic eraser and rubbing alcohol but nothing seems to make a difference. They can only really be seen at certain angles but it really annoys me. Any ideas on what it could be?

    Hi,

    Here is the model:

Intel Core i7-4710HQ, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M, SanDisk A110 SD6PP4M-256G-1006

I can't find any optimization software for this laptop i just got. and it seems to always prefer integrated gfx over Nvidia. is there a way to disable integrated gfx and improve performance? how easy would it be to pop in an SSD to this? i have a 250g ssd and there seems to be a port in the back.

im trying to run a siple game like diablo 2 pod and its choppy as hell

    Gaming laptop

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 09:16 AM PST

I'm thinking of getting a gaming laptop instead of a pc because I don't play many pc games but I still want to play here and there with my friends. so far I've come across the Acer nitro 5 and Lenovo Ideapad L340, IDK if those are the best but I'm not looking for the greatest just something affordable and good. so what would be the best one for me. and for currency I live in the U.S also something that could run games like, rainbow 6, CSGO, and escape from tarkov

Matebook X Pro - Embedded Controller Registers - Increase Fan Speed

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 08:43 AM PST

Hi there good people of Reddit. I have been having issues with my Huawei Matebook X Pro Signature edition with regards to chassis heat. The operating temperatures of my CPU and GPU are acceptable so I don't think thermal paste is an issue. The chassis, however, gets very warm to the touch unless I use a cooling pad, so much so that it becomes uncomfortable whilst using Photoshop. I believe the issue is due to the single fan and heat-pipe design which causes the GPU to heat up the CPU and vice versa, as well as the super thin chassis of the device.

I have undervolted both my CPU and GPU using ThrottleStop and MSI Afterburner respectively but the issue is still noticeable. I want to boost my fan speed/curve to mitigate this issue. I would rather have a louder laptop than one that is hot to the touch.

I have tried using Open Hardware Monitor, HW Monitor and Speed Fan; all of which don't detect my fans at all. There are also no fan options in the BIOS menu. Notebook Fan Control on the other hand will detect fans (albeit at the incorrect RPM) when using various presets. There isn't however a preset for the Matebook X Pro unfortunately, so adjusting the RPM does nothing.

Does anyone know what Embedded Controller is used in the Matebook or the Read and Write Registers required to get the fan control working? I have literally sat and tried every single default preset listed in Notebook Fan Control and some detect fans, but none will successfully adjust the fan speed.

I've seen posts about controlling the fan speed of the X Pro previously but no-one seems to have come to a positive conclusion. Any help would be much appreciated!

    M2 slot with no stand-off?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 08:30 AM PST

I'm trying to install an m2 SSD in my boyfriends laptop. He has an hp 15-bs168cl. There is an unpopulated m2 slot on the motherboard but no standoff or screw hole to hold it down. The service manual says to use a special adaptor board and install the drive in place of the old hard drive.

How can I use the unpopulated m2 slot on this laptop?

    Can I drive two monitors off a Laptop's USB-C Gen 1 - DP 1.2?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 07:11 AM PST

I am looking for a USB-C hub and the one I bought had an HDMI and VGA port. However that hub does not let me use both displays in extended mode, it simply mirrors the HDMI or VGA onto each other. I am looking at more expensive hubs but I dont want to buy it if I cannot run two monitors in extended mode. The ones I am looking at are thunderbolt 3 hubs, and my laptop does not run the USB-C port as thunderbolt.

    Here is my laptop:
