    • Total budget and country of purchase: <$300 .I would prefer to spend as little as possible. (Broke, unemployed college student and renting from university is not an option)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery would be nice, but is not required at all (plugins everywhere). Specs are more important, but I realize at my price range, I'm not going to get much.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No media editing, no gaming, no CAD. I need a laptop that can handle light programming in Visual Studio and other general programming related applications. I am an MIS student who just needs something to last the next 1.5 years to get through the end of my studies.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I do not expect any gaming performance with this low budget.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As long as the keyboard works and I can occasionally hook a mouse up to it, I'm fine with whatever.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Like I said above, I don't have much money and due to the late timing of my classes (4:30pm-9:30pm), I am not able to check out laptops from my university. As far as I can tell, if the laptop can handle running Windows 10, Microsoft Office tools (including Excel, Access, and Visual Studio), and general programming tasks, I should be able to use it. I am very open to warrantied refurbished models and am flexible on most other things.

Not really good at knowing what specs to look for so any advice, direction, or suggestions from you all would be really appreciated! Thanks so much!

UK - Thin £1000 - £1500 video editing and gaming laptop

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:02 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £1000 - £1500 (if specs are too much, I'm willing to go for £1700 at max)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 isn't a concern, good battery life would be nice, but anything that lasts more than 3 hours is enough
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Since I'm a student and I'll be carrying it around to class, this is important. 1.5kg to 2kg would be ideal. Thinness is also a plus, I saw Acer Helios 300 was really good for it's price, but it's a little bulky and gamer-like for my tastes.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Linux.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. A little gaming, as described in the next question. Video editing should be decent, if not good. I'm starting a YouTube channel and I want to make quality work (so a good display is mandatory).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a gaming beast, something that's enough for 1080p around 60fps in games like GTA V, Overwatch, Apex, Rocket League and maybe some MMOs.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I saw some laptops that suit these preferences, like the Razer Blade with the 1660 ti (£1800) or Asus Zephyrus M with the RTX 2060 (£1700), but I was wondering if there are cheaper similar options.

Thanks so much in advance. Have a nice day!

Upgrade SSD or buy a new laptop?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 05:50 PM PST

I have a Dell Inspiron 3442 with a an i5-4th gen CPU. I want to ask you guys, if it still worth it to upgrade from hdd to SSD instead of buying a new laptop ?

Use cases * Programming, Web Development * We Browsing

I have minimal budget right now, I live in the Philippines if that info would help. Also I got a desktop with a Ryzen 2600 and 1060GTX. So, I really dont need much power but I want something I can use on the go.

I am also thinking of buying a used macbook pro, which is mandatory if I want to explore ios development.

Thank you! I need your suggestions! Thanks!

Need a laptop for school and some light gaming. <$1000

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:24 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Less thank 1000$ USD, buying in USD too
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like a 2 in 1 but it's not necessary. I would like good battery life though, at least 6+ hours of regular use
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too thick, less than 6 pounds? Idk, I just want something less thick than the Acer Nitro 5
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Less than 15 inches as I will be carrying this in my backpack. I'm open to larger sizes though.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. A little bit of CAD, Visual Studio and hopefully some games (Fortnite at low settings 60fps+) and regular internet use.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to play games like Fortnite or League of Legends low at 60fps+, but not necessary.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As long as it has a decent battery life, doesn't scream "hardcore gamer" and is light, but powerful, it's good.

Searching for a laptop as cheap as I can get with those specific requirements

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:59 AM PST

Hi, I need a laptop for programming, writing and gaming, I'll list first things I DON'T need and them things I do.

    • I don't need big battery, technically I don't need a battery at all, It will always be connected to ac somewhere else be it train home or work.
    • I don't need good screen, the color accuracy and such don't matter much for me, I'd prefer it won't go under 1080p tho
    • I don't need lightweight or compact, I carry my bag with me anyways, unless it's more than 5k it doesn't matter to me. Infact, I'd also prefer specifcly not a thin laptop as they feel flimsy and weak and I'm always sceptical about their cooling.
    • I don't NESSESERLY need a good keyboard tho that would be really nice (I have a Bluetooth mechanical keyboard that I usually take with me)
    • I don't need a Webcam
    • I don't really even need speakers

    Things I do need

    • Good cpu
    • Goos gpu - I'm very good at wrecking game's graphics to a point they run on anything and it doest bother me that much most of the time (I have a desktop at home for things I do care about) so generally I can right now work with an mx250/150. That being said, I don't think an mx250 will last for long and if I'm buying a laptop anyways I think I might as well enjoy it a little more, so I thought something more along the lines of a 1050 or a 1650 n such.
    • Expandable ram - I don't need more than 8gb at the moment but I'd really like the option to expand it the future.
    • 500g ssd preferably, I could also live with 256.
    • Sturdy build - I'd like it to hold well, not very important but it'll probably drive me crazy if it'll feel plasticy n shit.

In terms of price there is no specific range but as low as possible where my needs are still met.

    Thank you!

    Laptop for coding/gaming

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:44 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: 500€ to 1000€ in Portugal

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want the best specifications for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 Inches up

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Heavy coding, light gaming, game debugging. Will be using Unity, Visual Studio, any application for sprites including photoshop if necessary, Apache NetBeans and Android Studio

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Any ESports, RTS Games, and games like PUBG. As long as it's above or at 60 FPS at 1080 with medium settings I'm happy.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As said before, this computer is mainly for coding so I want a computer that runs the fans as slow as possible if at all. Cooling is the most important part, if while coding I can code in absolute silence and debug some 2D games it would be perfect. Also multitasking is important since I'll need to have some applications open at the same time (fan noise is acceptable as this point) a nice touch would be a good keyboard for typing but this isn't a necessity

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Be it ultrabook or gaming laptop, just recommend whatever is available in the shop named "PcDiga" (This is mainly a request for any portuguese person or anyone living here)

Relatively cheap laptop for a game programmer.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 11:19 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, $500 or less.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money-- a 2 in 1 provides no benefit to me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Ideally no more than 15 inches so I don't have to buy another carry bag (although I doubt this will be a problem, considering the price range).

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Game development. I mostly use Unity, but I intend to learn Unreal soon.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? ...Touhou? Don't worry about this, nothing I intend to run is more demanding than a game engine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I like having a number pad, but it isn't necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I recently spent a lot of money on a desktop, so I'm trying to spend as little money now as I can get away with. I'm not entirely sure if there are any laptops under $500 that can run Unreal, but that's why I'm asking. It's worth noting that there are a lot of laptops on sale on Newegg right now, so might be possible to pick a computer outside of my specified price range.

My budget would be 450 EUR and it needs to be shipped to Italy. Screen size is not fundamental but I'd prefer a 13 inches. HDMI port is a must.

    Narrowed it down

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 01:32 PM PST

I have found two laptops that fit my needs but need help to decide which one to get. Here they are:

    1) Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2

    • i9-9880H with vPro (8 core), 32GB DDR4 2666 MHz, 1 TB SSD, 15.6" IPS FHD Display, GTX 1650 Max-Q, $1840

    2) Razer Blade Stealth

    • i7-1065G7 (4 core), 16 GB DDR4, 512 GB SSD, 13.3" IPS Display, GTX 1650 Max-Q, $1499

Both of these laptops are brand new and coming from their respective manufacturers. Here's what I need to know:

Is there a significant difference in performance across the board between the two laptops? How does the i7-1065G7 compare to the i9-9880H? I am trying to see if there is a real justification for the $340 price increase between these two laptops. Thank you!

Need Cheap Laptop (most bang for buck)

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 06:34 PM PST

Hi, I'm looking for a cheap laptop for doing lots of internet surfing, online movie watching, and personal productivity. I have a 21" monitor at my desk along with a keyboard and mouse, and am used to a dual-monitor configuration using the laptop as the second monitor.

I'm looking for most-bang-for-buck, and the cheaper the better.

    Any suggestions?

(I spilled a glass of water on my laptop this morning, and now it won't boot up, so I guess I've got to replace it)

Total budget and country of purchase: Canada, $500 (cheaper the better)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you? It's mainly going to be used on a desk, but I guess I wouldn't want anything very bulky

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Chrome browser, word processor, spreadsheet, etc. I also watch movies online

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I already have a separate monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Premium laptop with disregard for thinness (no budget)

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 04:17 PM PST

Hi, so currently I'm looking for a laptop. I had the XPS 13 9380 i5 version and was greatly disappointed. I'm now mainly looking at the Surface laptop 3 13 inch which seems amazing other than the screen glare.

Pretty much all the reviews and info I have learnt is about ultra books and similar kinds of laptops. I've come here to try find a laptop that performs on all fronts and doesn't have a " gamer look" to it. Thinness of the laptop doesn't matter, only that it's portable enough to take to uni.

If possible , I'd like - A great screen with little to no glare ( 1080p is fine but above would be great) - great speakers - decent battery life - doesn't overheat - doesn't have loud fans that turn on a lot ( looking at you XPS) - Turns on relatively fast ( around 10 second boot up after shutdown)

I honestly wouldnt mind getting a laptop from an older year, as I mainly plan to take notes and occasionally use maths related programs ( I know there are cheaper options for these kinds of task but I want to buy a premium option), so having a 10th Gen Intel chip isn't really necessary.

In the event that such a laptop doesn't exist, please recommend anything that comes close. Thank you

I need help with a gaming labtop

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:06 AM PST

My budget is 1200 dollars, I'll be purchasing it in america

For the screen it would be nice if it was a 17"

I dont want a touch screen

For ram, 16 gb is always preferred

Storage, something with a sata drive or atleast an option to change to that

    Os, windows 10

I'd like this labtop to be able to comfortably handle running space engineers.

A reliable build for the labtop would be nice, but if I can atleast fix or change parts then that works too

Looking for a laptop to play Civ 6 and other strategy games on my commute under £300 (UK)

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 10:04 PM PST

Hi, i'm in the UK and my budget is £300. The best specifications for the budget is my main concern so that I'm not waiting minutes at a time between turns in game. Weight and thinness are not important to me. Preferably tunning Windows. No preferred screen size, the main/only use will be playing strategy games. Ideally playing the likes of Civ 6 on a huge map with max factions and decent visuals without too much of a struggle, but if I had to make some quality of life changes like turning off leader animations etc I could live with it. As long as it has a good build quality regarding keyboard and touch screen, I have no other requirements beyond those already stipulated.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" to 16"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. VMware possibly 2 boxes at a time, and basic office and coding software no video or gaming

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a great CPU, upgradeable ram ( or at least 16 gigs) and 2 storage slots (1SSD and M.2 would be what I put in it but doesn't need to come with it)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want a great CPU that way later on I can keep it chugging along vs one where it has a video card but a lesser graphics card

Im hoping to stay in the ~1000 range

Costco had a I7 Inspiron 5000 which had a 10510U but I was hoping for at least the 1065G7 or better.

The Costco one was $749 but mislabeled they would drop it to $699 but I didn't trust getting a display model for only $50 off ( should I try and get that?)
