| Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:17 AM PST I just want to say a big thank you to the r/buildapc and r/pcmasterrace community. It helped alot during the build process. I also want to say thank you to Bitwit, Jayztwocents, and Paul's Hardware from YouTube. Their videos are very informative and educational. I only had one hiccup during the whole build. I was planning to just use the Stock AMD CPU Cooler, but my motherboard manufacturer forgot to add an AM4 Backplate in packaging. So I had to drive to my nearest CanadaComputers in the middle of the build to buy an aftermarket cooler. A nice upgrade to the stock cpu cooler. Other than that, the build went smoothly and booted up on the first try. It took me around 4hrs to complete the build, including the time I had to drive to CanadaComputers. I spent most of that time on cable management in my case, considering I had 6 ARGB fans that needed to be connected to a fan hub(Corsair Commander Pro and Lighting Node Pro). My biggest tips to new builders, like myself, is to READ THE MOBO MANUAL(can't stress this enough), make sure your connections are secure. There's an audible click(on most) that tells you that you've pushed it all the way in, and CABLE MANAGEMENT IS A MUST, spend time on it. Are those parts compatible? A friend recommends to get the 5 3600 CPU but then I think I need a better motherboard because of the outdated BIOS. | I did it! 35+ hours later and I've completed my first build. Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:39 PM PST Now, I know you're wondering why it took me 35+ hours to build a computer. And the answer to that question lies in my Corsair CX450M PSU, which, it turns out, was DOA and was causing my case to immediately power off as soon as it started. If you're interested, you can see me describing these issues in my post history on r/buildapc! I'd like to say a big thank you to everybody who helped me out, but in particular I'd like to give a huge thanks to u/SheeBang_UniCron for basically guiding me through the entire troubleshooting process. It was thanks to him that I was able to finally determine that the issue was in fact my power supply, although I had to remove almost everything I possible could from my system and rebuild it about 5 times to figure that out! In the end, I had to purchase a new power supply from Best Buy (Corsair RM750) which is way overpowered for my system. However, it was the only one immediately available, and I love how it's fully modular! I was hesitant to go back to Corsair after their CX450M failed me, but it seems so far that I made the right decision. I will be sending back the defective unit to Amazon. This whole process of buying and putting together my computer has taken about 5 days. I'm a former uni student who dropped out of university this last semester to pursue a career as a paramedic, and I'm definitely not rolling in a ton of money. I spent way too much $$$ on this system when compared to what I had planned, but owning a proper gaming computer was something that I've dreamed of since I was a kid. I can't wait to start playing some games! Anyhow, that's all for my rambling. I just wanted to show my appreciation to this sub for how fantastic you've been, and thank you for the resources that you guys provided. Consider formatting your parts list. i7 6700k Thermalright True Spirit 120 CPU Cooler MSI z170a SLI Plus Motherboard 16 GB Corsair LPX 3200Mhz 16 CAS RAM CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 Gigabyte OC 5700 XT EVGA 650 GQ PSU Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. Previously, I had a set of 2400 Mhz RAM and I think I wasn't even XMPing the RAM and it was running at 2133 the entire time. Standard value kingston stuff, no heatspreaders, nothing fancy. Never had a problem with stability. I bought Corsair's LPX 3200 16 RAM because I wanted faster RAM for future plans of possibly going with a Ryzen CPU. My motherboard is rated to support this specific model and the speed, according to MSI's support compatibility website (see below for link). However, since installing it (in the 2 and 4 slots, as usual), I occasionally will get Overclocked Failed messages when waking up my PC from sleep. I've never had my PC black screen while gaming or otherwise. Only when waking from sleep. I'll need to restart the PC and that's when I'll see the Overclock Failed message, boot into BIOS, set the XMP again or choose the profile, and run smoothly from there. List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I have tried lowering the clock speed of the ram from the XMP of 3200 to other values like 3000 or 2400. The issue still seems to come up. I have tried using MSI's Memory Try-It with Samsung selected (because Samsung is the maker for these sticks) and that would also occasionally cause the failed screen to appear when waking. I ran MemTest86 and it did the 4 passes of the entire test suite and 0 errors appeared. This was with the XMP settings enabled. I've tried adding a little more voltage like 1.36 instead of 1.35. I have not tried other motherboard DIMM slots. Provide any additional details you wish below. My CPU is OC to 4.2 GHz though in the past I have reached 4.6 stable. I lowered it because I didn't need the juice really and wanted lower temps (though stress tests never really exceeded the 70s C). | Second Build, almost ready to go. Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:18 PM PST Understandably didn't get much attention around the holidays, so asking once more. Just looking for a second opinion before I spend any money. This will primarily be a gaming PC. Just want to run some high end graphics on bigger titles and the occasional MMO, and maybe look into streaming down the line. I was aiming to keep this build between $1500-1700, so I'm already a bit over budget, but it's not too much of an issue right now. In my current setup I've got a 750w SuperNOVA G2 that's a few years old. Could I save a bit of money by using that one, or would a new PSU be better? Any thoughts are welcome!

| Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:18 AM PST I finished building this pc 3 weeks ago and started to notice a slight burning smell around the 2nd week. And in week 3 I even saw fps drops in some games (55 avg in rdr2 to 49 avg) The smell only comes in when the gpu is under load. I've opened up the case and the smell is present only from the gpu. I was hoping for some thoughts on the build. I don't plan on playing on 4K anytime soon. I also don't plan on OC'ing. If so, which is the better route to take and why? It is truly encouraging to be apart of such an amazing community. With that, I have finally come across my first conundrum with the PC I built. I've noticed that I deal with issues in my internet connectivity, more frequent program crashes, and not being able to meet graphic requirements for some games/programs. Not to mention for some reason in some instances it takes multiple times attempt to start my computer with the power button..(I think it might be a case issue). Anyway I think it is time to upgrade and in some cases (no pun intended for my case lol) update my components. First I would like to preface what I do with my computer and intend to do with it. I work in an industry that heavily relies on AutoCAD (especially Civil 3D), so that is a priority program that needs to run on my rig. I also use my computer alot for my passion of making videos/short movies. I need it to smoothly render the video files in my editing software. I also like to play video games such as League of Legends, PUBG, Overwatch and Apex Legends. I would like the ability to record these games smoother so when I make a video with the game I don't lose out on the experience of playing it well. Another small hobby I've picked up is making a podcast, but this really doesn't require alot of computing power. In the future I would like to try to streaming myself playing some of my favorite games. It's something new I would like to try out. It was affordable at the time but now as a young professional I think I can improve. The big question I do have is should I start from scratch or should I just replace some of my components to give me a better experience? After speaking with a quite knowledgeable IT friend I was given the advice to save my money a little more then start from scratch. I would like to know all your opinions! I teach middle school and there is a little group of boys who all talk to me about PC gaming. One student in particular has been saving up and also has a slight budget from their parents for a total of $600. They will not need a mouse or keyboard- but they need EVERYTHING else including a monitor and a case. They don't need speakers as they just plan to use their headphones. They may be able to get a discounted copy of Windows, so I don't think that needs to be factored into the budget. I told them I would help them build it if we could meet their budget. They do not play very graphically taxing games. Mostly Minecraft and I'd imagine fortnite. I live fairly close to a micro center. | I need some advice on replacing a failed graphics card Posted: 30 Jan 2020 04:06 PM PST The graphics card[GeForce 8500 GT] in my mum's PC[HP m8330f] failed, and I am not sure if I should get another of the same, or get a different one. The computer only gets used fo youtube and email, and works fine for that. the only requirement I have is it must have VGA or DVI because we don't want to replace the monitor, and we don't want to spend alot on it. the power supply was replaced a some point so it has a 6-pin PCIe power connector, though I doubt any cards that would be reasonable for the PC would need it. | Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:07 AM PST Hello, I booted up my computer today and it gave me a black screen with a white underscore on the top left corner of the screen (not blinking or anything) but after a few restarts, it now only shows a plain black screen. I also noticed that my motherboard shows an Ez debug LED light for VGA. After reading the manual, it means the GPU is not detected or failed. SPECS: i5 7600k MSI z270 SLI Plus 4gb x 4 - 16gb Corsair 2400Hz RAM EVGA 750 GQ PSU GTX 1060 Superclocked 3gb H100i V2 Cooler 120gb kingston boot drive 240gb kingston SSD 1TB WD blue Hard drive The GPU fan spins for a few seconds after turning on the PC but displays a black screen. I have tried booting up the computer without the GPU, I have also tried installing it on different slots, i tried moving the RAM around (dual channel, single stick) i have tried connecting monitor directly to the motherboard, also tried connecting and disconnecting my boot drive. Im not sure what else to try anymore. Ive had this computer for about 3 years and last time I used it was yesterday night to play some video games. Didnt notice any signs that the computer could be breaking or anything like that. Edit: im typing this on mobile and specs list is not showing up as intended. Sorry. Last night it crashed and lost one of my nvme drives. Still boots and works but I can't find the drive and I don't understand why. Maybe it fried? Are they that delicate? I wasn't even loading up the computer. What I have done: Restart Check bios (it doesn't show) What I'm planning to do: Take the nvme out and reseat it. Replace nvme I just don't understand what would make it kick the drive like that. I'm still a newb to pc stuff so any help is appreciated. Opened it up and saw that most of the thermal paste was pushed to the sides. I gave it a clean and re-applied thermal paste. Now I'm getting 65°C max on load!
