Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:56 AM PST Hey yall. I have been using ubuntu for the past year or so and I want to try out a new distro, maybe arch. My issue is that my ubuntu partition is HEAVILY configured to my current needs. I'm a software engineer and there are many specific installations and configurations that I use on a daily basis. I have wanted to try a new distro for a while now but I dont want to have to reinstall/reconfigure all my software and tweaks as it took a while to get all the things I needed installed correctly. So my question is, is there some sort of migrating tool I can use to make this process eaiser? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:07 AM PST Hello, I am currently running Debian 9 on my SSD and want it as my primary OS. If I were to install Win10 on my HDD would it affect my other drive (with Debian)? I have important data there and not sure about the end result. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Which distro for gaming and media server? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:47 AM PST Hello all, With this in mind, which distro would you recommend? I have tried to do my homework and it seems like Mint or Manjaro would fit the bill. Am I on the right track here? [link] [comments] |
I don't like PopOS . Any other distros for Nvidia cards? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:47 AM PST Hey guys so I'm pretty new to all the Linux stuff. I used Solus for near a year, bought a new laptop and installed PopOS to try it out, but i don't like it. It's fast and snappy but I liked Solus more. So if I'm considering to try another distro, Manjaro, Mint, or something else? My nvidia card is MX230 btw. I'm dual booting windows 10 as well as whatever distro i end up at. [link] [comments] |
Which bootable usb creator should I use for Debian? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:51 AM PST Hello! I'm using Zorin OS at the moment and I want to switch to Debian because Zorin is kinda slow (probably because of GNOME 3 desktop) and I want to learn a bit more about Linux and Debian just feels good to use in my opinion. However Rufus isn't avalible on Linux and Debian installer says that using Unetbootin can cause problems. And etcher doesn't see my USB. Is there another alternative you guys recommend? distros for a Netbook N150 from Samsung Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:41 PM PST So my brother and his wife gave me this old cheap looking netbook with W7 Starter and they ask me to restore it, honestly i probably just return it to them and should tell them to buy a newer PC but oh well... I ending up installing Zorin Os Lite and it worked... sorta slowish, but i assume it was because of the netbook specs and i told to my brother to not have high expectations. do you guys know any other distro besides Zorin OS Lite that i can try to install on this netbook? since these netbook is not for tech-savy users i choosed that distro (i read about it that is windows user friendly) but i think it can be improved further i pick another thing [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:34 PM PST (Sorry if this is the wrong sub to post in) I'm looking for cheap server hosting for a small web server to fool around with. It's not for anything serious or public, just to learn some HTML/NodeJS. As pointed by a few sources, self-hosting can come with a bunch of security measures I really don't want to get into. Looking for: - Super low specs requirements (Anything remotely more powerful than a raspberry pi) - Ability to port forward ports 80 or maybe 443 - ssh or equivalent shell connection [link] [comments] |
can't get past the install screen Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:52 AM PST i'm trying to install linux onto a hp stream 14 via usb. i've tried like 5 different distros and sone don't load at all (lubuntu), whilst others completely freeze up once i click install (debian, mint). secure boot and fast boot are disabled in the bios, and legacy boot is enabled. is there anthing i'm missing? other people have done this successfully with the same model of computer, so what's going wrong here? Arch Linux - Thinkcentre M700 random crahes with games and video Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:14 AM PST Hi ProblemOver the past few months I have been getting an increasing number of crashes at random. Mostly it's while playing games or watching video. Sometimes the issue goes away after a few seconds and other times it just crashes the computer and thereafter only hard reboots can bring it back up. Hardware

Software from repos
TroubleshootingAt first I tought it was about temps, but they seem to be fair, around 60-65, I can't ssh into the computer after it has crashed, however, today I was able to survive a crash and found this in

How to run X headless and access remotely? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:37 AM PST I just built a home lab with a cpu w/o integrated graphics and the only discrete GPU has been bound to vfio for a planned macOS vm instance but before that I want to run an X client and even a Windows 10 vm with QXL graphics for OneDrive management, both available from a LAN peer running Windows 10 natively via SSH and Xming as X server. As before I can login to the TTY but as I don't quite appreciate the underlying mechanisms of X, I did as instructed by the [Arch wiki](https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Running) to have xorg-server and xf86-video-dummy installed, as well as writing a conf file indicative of headless-running. When I, however,

Thinking to switch from windows to linux Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:23 AM PST I have windows 10 on my Dell laptop. It has i5 8th gen and ram 8gb. The points that I am considering to switch is my laptop is a little slow now (it takes 2-3 seconds when switching tabs from vs code to chrome with 4 tabs open). Would it be good choice to switch considering my system is 2 year old. If yes, which distro should I go with? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:11 AM PST I dual booted parrot os and windows 10 with grub but when I finished installing parrot os I restarted and got the /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod not found but when I look in the files there's no x86_64-efi folder there's i386-PC folder tho with all the .mod files but when I link it to there it still adds the x86_64-efi directory on to the place of where it is looking even when I just set it to /boot/grub it still does that. I cant boot into the bios or boot menus I cannot into windows or parrot os I cant do anything apart from being stuck in grub rescue without any way to fix it. [link] [comments] |

Too low battery life on ubuntu 18.04 Posted: 02 Jan 2020 04:27 AM PST I have a dual boot system. Windows 10 usually gives 4-5 hours of battery life but when switching to ubuntu, it drops to 1:30 hours. Not even 1%-1 minute. Is this issue of bios or just OS sucking more battery life My device is Asus Tuf Fx504 (intel i5 8th gen, Nvidia GeForce 1050) [link] [comments] |

To Dual-boot or VM Linux on ThinkPad Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:29 AM PST I have a new Lenovo X390 on the way and wanted to install either Mint or Pop OS. Would it be better to dual-boot or VM the OS? Which one offers better performance? Also, general thoughts welcome. Personal experience etc... Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Problem on a multi-boot system Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:34 AM PST Hi! I have a Toshiba Satellite C660-15N laptop on which I have a multi-boot. I'm running both Windows 10 and Linux Mint 19.3, which are installed on my SSD. The problem is, whenever I use Windows and then go back to Linux, my other drive (a hard drive on which I store my data) doesn't allow me to write new data on it. I can read existing data but can't make any changes (can't edit existing files or create new ones). Is there a way to solve this problem? The way I'm currently handling this is creating a snapshot on Linux using Timeshift and restoring it whenever I face this problem, but I'd like to know if there's a way to completely prevent this from happening. Thanks in advance! Edit: Trying to remount the drive as rw does enable the options to create new files/folders, but when I actually try to do that, I get an error message: Error creating directory /media/usr/DATA/Untitled Folder: No such file or directory Also, a little detail about the solution I mentioned. In order for it to actually work, I have to restore the snapshot, go back to Windows AGAIN, and then return to Linux to be able to write on the drive. [link] [comments] |
Debian Software Centre keeps asking me for my password. :( Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:15 AM PST I'm getting really annoyed, I never had this problem previously when I first tried Debian, this is the first time I seen this. Is there a solution to this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:13 PM PST I apologize in advance for asking a question that's probably been asked a million times. I am interested in finally taking the plunge into Linux (probably Ubuntu, particular distro doesn't really matter right now). Here is the question: What is the best way to install it, meaning where, on what drive? I have a Windows 10 computer with a couple of SSDs. My boot drive is an NVMe Samsung, and I have an older Sata 3 SSD that used to be the boot drive in an older build. Should I install Linux on a partition of the NVMe or the older SSD? I am not interested in using a Virtual Machine, I want the "real thing" as much as possible (while coexisting with Windows). Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
