    What laptop should I buy?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:51 PM PST

Hello. I am a new graphic designer and I own a really good desktop pc. Until now, I was doing my work on this desktop pc, but I also need a Laptop to do my work when I am not home. I will use the laptop only for this work and I don't want to spend a lot of money (around 300$). I was thinking to buy a used old MacBook from eBay but I am not sure. Do you have any other recommendations or I should buy a used MacBook?

Got a new laptop. Any advice on how to keep it in great shape?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:18 PM PST

    Hi,

I got a new laptop for Xmas. It came loaded with norton which doesn't make me too happy.

I was wondering what I should load onto the laptop.

I have a lifetime copy of malware bites that I plan to deactivate from an old computer and put it on this laptop.

I have always used superantispyware. I'll probably load the free version and just run in manually.

    Any other suggestions?

    Many thanks!

    What causes PL2 throttling?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:46 PM PST

Sometimes when I turn my laptop on, it shows in TS that CPU GPU and RING have PL2 throttling. Even when not doing ANYTHING. It's really annoying since it prevents the CPU from turboboosting and the fact that I have absolutely no clue what fixes it, I usually mess around with settings and after million reboot it starts working normally again. I have undervolted the CPU and it is i7 7700HQ.

Please help me decide which one to get

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:37 AM PST

    Hello all,

I was saving some money from my first real job so I can get a new laptop. I wanted to give around 600-700 euros for a new one. I am not a huge gamer, I mostly play older titles: homm, war3... A bit of moba plays (hots). I usually use my laptop for movies, browsing, light editing.

I can not decide between this two:

    1. Lenovo IdeaPad L340-15 (15.6") amd QC R7 -3700U/16gb/512 gb SSD/ RX Vega 10

    2. Acer Nitro AN515-43-R5DC (15.6") amd QC R5-3550H/8gb/512 gb SSD/ RX 560 4gb

Thank you in advance for any advice and help.

    Dell G5 power limit problem

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:20 PM PST

    I have a dell g5 5587 with i7-8750h and GTX1060 Max-Q

The problem im having is power limit throttle after 40-60 minutes of gaming the cpu drops to 0.8ghz and with it the gpu. I tried everything Intel XTU throttle stop afterburner. I undervolted to every posible level, I tried speed shift on diferent levels i turned off turbo boost and other settings ant nothing works even with thermals at 70-80*c it power limit throttles.

The question im asking is there any way of disabeling the power limit or rasing it?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:16 PM PST

I have a notebook with original screen resolution of 720p. I was wondering if I could be able to upgrade to 1080p since it has an HDMI port. Will this work? Will the monitor go right back to 720p?

edit: my GPU is an Intel HD Graphics 4000

    Sager/Clevo N155RD1 ram upgrade question.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:04 AM PST

I just received this laptop as a gift, Sager/Clevo N155RD1 or NP7255 or it could be NP7256. Yes it's an old laptop that they barely used, so I want to upgrade the ram on it. The manual said that it uses DDR4 2133. So I go to check prices for 2133 ram and I find out that getting DDR4 2400 ram is actually cheaper.

So my question is will it be ok for me to use the 2400 ram in this laptop. TIA!

    Battery life question

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:36 AM PST

Hey, I recently bought a new laptop which was advertised to have 14 hours battery life (I know thats exaggerated) but when browsing on the internet with battery saver enabled and brightness set to around 40% I get the battery life estimate only around 4-5 hours with full battery. And it is discharging fairly quickly. Is that normal? Same for watching videos. When I am not doing anything, then it says around 10 hours. Its asus zenbook ux 433f. What are some things I can improve/turn off/disable that would make the battery last longer? Thanks in advance.

    Laptop suggestions around $200?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:04 AM PST

So my chromebook got stolen last semester and it's about time for the spring semester. I need a laptop just to get me by; nothing fancy. I'm looking for one that runs Windows 10 and won't have any problems running Microsoft applications, accounting software, and the occasional Netflix bingeing. Also, an HDMI. Like I said, nothing fancy, just enough to get me through my school work and stuff. I have found some but I don't know how much RAM is good or bad. I don't want something that will crash every time I open an excel spreadsheet lol.

    Any help is appreciated!

Best Gaming Laptop under 2k USD?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:54 AM PST

My old laptop just died and I am looking to replace it. I dont do heavy gaming but I want something mildly future proof that has the abilities to run the top games. So far I really like the m17r2 from dell. It comes in at 1750 +tax and seems to fit what I want. But before i press the order now button I wanted to get some options. Ive done pretty exstensive googling and it seems like for 1750 the m17 offers the best bang for the buck. There are better laptops but they come in at like 2300-2500+. So I would love some other options. Here is the M17 that I am about to buy.

Base Alienware m17 R2 Processor 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9750H (6-Core, 12MB Cache, up to 4.5GHz w/ Turbo Boost) Operating System Windows 10 Home, 64-bit, English Video Card NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2060 6GB GDDR6 (OC Ready) Memory 16GB, 2x8GB, DDR4 2666MHz Hard Drive 256GB PCIe M.2 SSD LCD 17.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz, 9ms, 300-nits, 72% NTSC, Eyesafe® Display Tech + Tobii Eyetracking Power Supply 180W Power Adapter Wireless Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 (2x2) and Bluetooth 5.0 Network Card Killer Networking E3000 2.5Gbps Ethernet NIC Primary Battery 76Wh Battery (6-Cell) Xbox Game Pass for PC Xbox Game Pass for PC 3 Month Free Trial Keyboard Alienware mSeries keyboard with per-key RGB LED AlienFX lighting - English Cable US Power Cord Documentation/Disks Safety/Environment and Regulatory Guide (English/French) Business Support Dell.com, Order Order Information US No Canada Ship Charge Support Tech Sheet and Powercord Dell.com, Order Color Choice Dark Side of the Moon Packaging Shipping Material FGA No FGA Additional Software Additional Software Processor Branding Intel® Core ™ i7 Processor Label Monthly Subscription Services No Monthly Subscription selected Service 1 Year Hardware Service with Onsite/In-Home Service After Remote Diagnosis Office Productivity Software (Pre-Installed) Microsoft Office 30 Day Trial McAfee Live Safe No Anti-virus Requested

Thinking of buying a Xiaomi Notebook Pro

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:31 AM PST

This laptop in particular checks all the boxes for me:

15" screen, i7 10th Gen processor, 16GB ram, decent NVIDIA card and expandable SSD storage, all for a little over $1K.

But before I commit wonder if there are any issues I should be aware of.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Where to find drivers for older laptops?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:14 AM PST

Family has an older laptop (HP G60-104CA). Can't find drivers on HP's website. Can't even contact them as there support section just leads you in circles requiring a product serial that doesn't exist on their site anymore.

Found a HP-Drivers-Download.com website, but all files seem to link to some DriverEasy.com and it links to the same DriverEasy_Setup file. Not what I'm looking for. I did find HPNotebookDrivers. It seems to link to HP's FTP. Does this site look good for driver downloads? Are they reputable?

[DEAD] Surface PRO 5 Model 1796 SSD replacment stuck on WINDOWS LOGO

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:07 AM PST

Guys, here is someone desperate seeking for help.

My SP5 model 1796 just died randomly. I do not have any warranty left and want to solder a new SSD chip on it as it cant get any worse. I just dont have any luck finding a Chip SSD ( KUS020203M-B000 ) as a replacment.

Do you have any tipps on how to get this resolved? Where to find the parts or maybe know a workaround to get the device working?

Already tried to get into recovery or UEFI with no luck. It is like all memory just died. Thank you Microsoft for making the SSD replacment impossible btw.
