Ideal router for gaming with OpenVPN and Wireguard support, and quality SQM. 500/Low connection. Posted: 29 Jan 2020 04:22 AM PST Spend the last 3 days running in circles with this. HP T620 Plus thin client, Minisys, netgate? Pfsense, Opnsense, untangle, Openwrt? The specs/software/capability combinations is making my head spin. Maybe the 100+ tabs isn't helping either.... My budget is $500. Want something that will be somewhat future-proof, silent, easy to use, small, can handle 1000/xxxx, fast with Opnvpn and Wireguard, and quality SQM for gaming without bufferbloat. I don't mind tinkering, actually enjoy it. But I don't want it to become a full time job. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2020 03:55 PM PST I want to buy a Google Mesh for my apartment and I was wonder if it goes through thick concrete walls and if there are any alternatives. All help would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
FireTV Stick keeps losing internet connection but stays in WLAN Posted: 29 Jan 2020 02:18 PM PST I have a fire tv stick that is connected to an unifi ap ac pro in the 5ghz band. that ap is connected to my virtual pfsense ha cluster with piholes as DNS servers. Every other device (laptops, smartphones, rpi3 etc.) has had no issues whatsoever over the past year. But this tv stick stops streaming after 1 or 2 episodes and says it has no internet connection. It stays in the 5ghz band and the signal is excellent though. After waiting for 2-3 min it magically works again for 1-2 episodes until everything repeats again. I tried moving the stick to my guest wifi (that bypasses the piholes) but that didnt change a thing. Has anyone ever experienced something like this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:03 PM PST So since I'm fairly new to networking, and a bit of an idiot, I recently had the idea of running internet in the form of ethernet wall outlets throughout my house. However, I have no idea what I'm suppose to be looking at when it comes to cables and whether or not I wanna play around with server stuff. Main goal at the end of all of this is to efficiently run internet to every room in the house without as many hiccups as possible. Any suggestions on what I'm about to get myself into would be much appreciated because, again, I'm new to all of this and I'm an idiot. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2020 08:34 PM PST I'm looking at a cheap actiontek router https://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-Dual-Band-Wireless-Extender-Ethernet/dp/B00FKTMWDE/ref=sr_1_6?crid=27GDRKH6ZQEB9&keywords=moca+adapter&qid=1580357883&sprefix=moca+%2Cindustrial%2C142&sr=8-6to be able to convert a coax cable I have running from my router to my bedroom which used to be used for tv until I got rid of it. If I take two of these boxes and connect it on either end of the coax cable, can I use this to make the coax cable into an ethernet style cable? Basically I just want to do moca but dont want to spend the money on all the newer stuff thats out. Will this allow me to do the same thing? All I want this for is to make the coax cable thats already there to allow me to have ethernet on the end in my bedroom to connect to my pc. I would be wanting to also plug this in to the router I already use to give it internet that way. [link] [comments] |
Add EdgeRouter X to Airport Extreme-based network? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:31 PM PST I'm happy with the performance of my Apple Airport-based home network, but the software is pretty limited (and development has obviously ceased) and I'd like to get more insights about my network traffic. Specifically, I'd like to see which devices are online at any given time, which devices are consuming the most bandwidth, and I'd like to have some tools to organize devices by user or category — ideally with VLAN support so I can eventually put smarthome devices on to a separate network. From what I've read, it seems like Ubiquity's EdgeRouter X is probably a good fit, but if you've got another reco I'm open to hear it. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jan 2020 07:01 PM PST Need some advice on how I should approach networking in our house. Currently have a 2013 era surfboard and apple extreme router hooked up in an electric panel on the second story of our 2000 Sqft house. Needless to say - WiFi is horrible with it in the metal enclosure. I do have wirings going out to certain rooms, but need a suggestion on a somewhat budget friendly way to get this all to work. Also have a tp link switch which I tried to connect and put the router out in the rooms, but have after much reading learned I need a router between the modem and the switch. Is my best bet using the router in the box to get the signals out to the rooms and then putting a few access points in? My networking skills are low but if I need to do a few walkthroughs I could tough it out. Any other considerations to look at? Not going for a super big upgrade - but can get some new equipment if needed. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:38 PM PST TL;DR: Need guidance for how to 'separate' my network.
I just recently installed Openvpn on my Unraid system and started reading into LAN addresses and using different subnets for different uses. I change my local from 192.168.x.x to 10.x.x.x, it's been fun and exciting. I don't care that immensely about what my (current) tenant is using the internet for so the solution of getting two separate ISPs isn't specifically what I'm going for. But maybe your suggestions will be the same.
I'm mostly want to keep my network secure. I don't want for my network devices to show up on for my tenant's and vice versa. I've also been reading about how some people setup IoT and guest networks. I'd still like my network to be secure when I let a guest use my wifi. I think you get the point.
How do I achieve this? Is this achievable? Do I need a new router? What phraseology should I be Googling to find out more? TIA, this is very new territory for me. [link] [comments] |
Need help connecting to ISP in another state Posted: 29 Jan 2020 06:10 PM PST I live in Las Vegas and have Cox ISP. I want to have and use Starry ISP which is not available here but is in Los Angeles. How would I be able to connect to the Starry ISP that is in Las Angeles from Las Vegas? [link] [comments] |
Help configuring router in dorm so that I can use LIFx light bulb Posted: 29 Jan 2020 02:24 PM PST My brother bought me this light bulb for Christmas. I really wanna set it up but I can't get it to connect to my university's internet because I have to register all of my internet devices with the university, and they only have the options of registering phones and computers. So, I bought this router to connect my light bulb to. But, I don't really know what to do with it. I've heard that I should put it in bridge mode, but I don't see any option to do that in the admin settings when I connect to it. I'd love any input/advice/direction/assistance. Cheers. Unable to reach internet with pfsense router Posted: 29 Jan 2020 05:44 PM PST My connections from my ISP to my PC are as follows. ADSL2+ connection from ISP -> DSL port of modem/router #1 (in bridged mode) Ethernet port of bridged modem -> WAN port of pfsense router LAN port of pfsense router -> WAN port of bridged modem/router #2 Ethernet port of bridged modem/router #2 -> pc I can connect to the internet with just my PC connected to modem/router #2 however if I connect another device no connection on either. Am I using the bridged modem router incorrectly? Edit: I can plug the modem/router #1 (not in bridged mode) into modem/router #2 (in bridged mode) and use modem/router #2 as a switch the way I'm intending. it doesn't work with pfsense in between however. Slow WiFi with R8000 but a lot of neighbors... Posted: 29 Jan 2020 04:16 PM PST TLDR: I'm wondering if my neighbor's Google mesh network is crowding out my 5Ghz signal. Read on for how I'm coming to this conclusion... After years of battling competing networks, I plunked down some cash for a Nighthawk X6 AC3200. It's been great up until the past year or so. I feel like restarting the router helps for a bit but then it just goes back to slow WiFi when using the 5Ghz bands, and 2.4 is not much better. I used to have my Desktop in the same room even, and the WiFi was still horrible. I did a scan to see what the surrounding WiFi networks looked like and while there were a lot, the "loudest" signal was from next door, belonging to a Google branded router. I eventually got a 50 foot cable to run around the perimeter of the room to my desktop. Problem solved. We are expecting soon, so I've had to move my desktop from the new baby's room down to the basement, whereas the router and modem are still on the second floor. I'd been dreading this, because if the WiFi had been terrible in the same room, it's going to be borderline unusable in the basement. But I decided to give it a try to see how well it operates and take a guesstimate on where I'll have to move the modem and router next for optimal coverage. Inexplicably, it worked FINE. I was getting very close to our full download speed, and lag in online games was non-existent. I was flabbergasted but nonetheless pleased with my newfound luck. Coincidentally, my move to the basement happened around the same time that my neighbors left for their annual post-Christmas vacation. So for the time they were gone, the WiFi was wonderful. They just got back a week ago and our WiFi has been back to being shit ever since. Is it possible that their Google router is causing interference? I have two other nearby neighbors that also have WiFi, but their signal isn't as strong as our neighbors comparatively. Is there a setting they could turn down to reduce the power? I'm wondering what to suggest, but I've never used a Google router to begin with and don't know where to start. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a Gate controller with app support Posted: 29 Jan 2020 04:06 PM PST Hello all, I am trying to find a way to have Keypad control, keyfob control and application remote control for access into a property. In a perfect world it will also have camera access of the gate from within the app as well. Does anyone have any brand/model number, or in general help on this?, [link] [comments] |
Troubleshooting setting up my own network Posted: 29 Jan 2020 03:38 PM PST Hi guys, so I really don't know anything when it comes to IT talk and all that, but I'm trying to learn. Anyways I live in an apartment building that is strictly student housing for the local university, that I attend. We have a shared WiFi for the entire place and it sucks. My phone, laptop, TV, and PS4 will never stay connected and it is super frustrating. So I got my own NetGear N150 Wireless Router and plugged it in to the wall Ethernet jack. I got everything all set up and its working great, but I was wondering if this would cause my apartment to charge me extra for using this? And also is there a way I could hide the network so they couldn't spot it? There are several other private networks shown on my computers network list. [link] [comments] |
Can i have my own internet from same isp in my room? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 02:45 PM PST So , i moved in with my gf. We have 3 roommates which is her aunt aunts bf and her aunts son. The issue is we moved into a bigger house. Our room is up stairs across and the modem/router is downstairs on the other side of the house. So im not sure if that is whats happening is the range, but my internet is constantly dropping out. The issue is there is a day or 2 when the internet is perfectly fine, and then days where it drops every 2 minutes. I would say 5/7 days a week its horrible. But when i test internet connection on my ps4 it comes right back on. The modem or router is not losing any internet the lights all stay on, i tried getting a wifi range extender and they will not connect with this modem/router. I am unsure of how to fix this issue as it is her aunts account and there internet so i dont know if it is possible to get my own isp from comcast ( no where else does service in my area) when they already have it. Questions on moving from Google WiFi to an OpenWRT(/pfSense) + UniFi solution Posted: 29 Jan 2020 02:39 PM PST I have a house with thick walls so have not been able to get wi-fi coverage across the house without using at least 3 access points. It has forced me to learn about networking and, probably like many here, would now say I've got the bug for tinkering to get the most performance from my setup. A couple of years ago I moved from a wi-fi + powerline-based solution to laying ethernet and adding a Google WiFi mesh point to cover areas where ethernet wasn't easy. However as our fiber internet connection has gained speed this is not translating to gains in wireless performance, so I think we're at the limits of Google WiFi capabilities (e.g. average link speed of 40mbit in some rooms, on a line that supports 200mbit). I have wired most of the devices that can use ethernet, and would be willing to wire in another access point if it means better coverage and saturating a cable line that might soon go up to 500mbit or faster. Partly to solve the bottleneck, and partly to enable more tinkering, I'd like to replace Google WiFi with a solution that gives me more control. For instance, I'm lacking VPN options at network level (would like to run router as Wireguard client). I'm thinking a dedicated router/firewall box, connected to switches I have dotted around the home, and 3x decent access points. Hoping you can help with a few questions before I invest:
If anyone has advice I'd much appreciate it - thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2020 10:36 AM PST Those are pictures of the different cables around the basement. Everything is through the walls. I know I can do powerline if need be, but I want to know how I can go about using what's already here. Thanks! https://imgur.com/a/LiY4s8r [link] [comments] |
Where to go to get Cat6a cabling in the UK? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 04:29 AM PST Had a look around and places i would go - like Amazon - just have CCA, or the listing looks very dodgy. So if someone can give me a reputable company or site to buy from that would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
How can I get rid with a router without nat loopback? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 02:07 PM PST Hi and thanks for reading, I have a brand new Huawei B311 router (LTE) and I used to have a raspberry pi server with miscellaneous things such as nextcloud, and I used to access it both inside and outside home (with ddns). Well, I noticed that my new router hasn't the option of loopback, so my server cannot be accessed thought my local network :( I look for custom firmware for this router but I couldn't find anything, and also look for a Chrome console command to make appear this option (I set custom dns like this (thinks to https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/c3ow1s/huawei_b311s220_change_dns/) I thought that somehow I should can use my pihole custom dns to redirect my ddns to my local adress when I am inside home, and so let the nextcloud client working properly but I didn't know how to manage this. Someone might help me? I will be very thankful. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2020 01:28 PM PST I am fairly tech savvy but my Achilles' heal is networks. So let's see if someone could help me decide the best solutions. According to Amazon reviews it seems that Google is the best mesh solution, and I would guess they would win the price for best UX. However, from a privacy point of view Google seems sketchy, since they at least gather all meta data. However, since I am not a total noob, I don't mind a better solution if there is. I know some solutions comes with built-in anti-virus. I need internet in three pretty small floors so I don't think reach is a big issue. Gracias! 🤝 [link] [comments] |
Port forwarding on a ZyXel router not working at all (trivial I know) Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:15 AM PST Trust me, as a former networking major and a full time sys admin this is just as annoying as it sounds for me. At home, I have a ZyXel vmg4825-b10a router. It has a fairly intuitive OS but when it comes to port forwarding it seemingly will not work regardless of the interface (ethwan, VDSL, ADSL) or what IP its pointed to (either the device im forwarding from, or the routers) so here I am, coming to you guys. I have scoured the internet and no one seemingly has a solid answer and before I go to my ISP I figured I would come here. Has anyone had this issue with this specific device, or one like it? Also how did you overcome it? [link] [comments] |
