Is using the same SSID and password on the 2.4ghz band and the 5ghz band good practice?

I know it might be handy to have them separated but I like the idea of it roaming to the faster band without having to do anything.

Hey! My dad sent me on a mission to get our family a router

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:36 PM PST

    Hey guys.

I want to start by saying it's basically the title, and that i really don't know much about home networking.

We need really good speeds but also good coverage across the house. We had to return a Linksys router because we couldn't get proper coverage across our house, it just was unreliable and would throw us off of it.

I don't really have much of a budget as long as it isn't an ungodly price. family of five. 3000 square foot house.

i'm not entirely sure what information to include here, so any questions i'll try my best to answer. any recommendations of the best routers for our situation would mean a lot to us and would be appreciated. thanks!!

    Fiber Home Network issues

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:07 PM PST

Hello, I've recently switched to att fiber (1000), most likely user error, but I've had nothing but trouble. Major issue is speed. When running speed test through att smart home app I am getting 950 upload and 950 download. I purchased a ex6400v2 network extender. When running speed test through the NETGEAR app on the extender it's on pushing 65 upload and 65 download. The extender itself is reading green for being in range of the att router. When looking at the link speed of the smart tv which is 6feet away from the extender I am only getting 6mbps. This is causing constant buffering when streaming. Same issues with tablets and Xbox. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Cooling my network closet during summer

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:25 PM PST

I converted a small closet in my house to a network closet a few years back. During the summer, this closet gets quite warm. Here are all the components I have in the closet:

    • Synology DS918+
    • APC 1000v UPS
    • ISP supplied modem
    • Synology RT2600AC wireless router
    • 3 Sonos Amps
    • 24-port ZyXEL unmanaged switch
    • Voip modem

Any ideas on what the best plan would be to start cooling this area? One thought is to buy a rack, stick an intake fan at the bottom of the rack and an exhaust at the top of the rack. The only components though that I can stick in the rack are the unmanaged switch and a new UPS unit. All the other devices are not rack configurable, but maybe I can purchase a vented shelf for the middle of the rack and stick the modem and router on it?

    Thanks for any guidance!

Multiple external IP addresses on a single router

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:01 PM PST

    Hi all,

Currently on a Netgear Nighthawk R8300, but willing to switch up to something different if necessary.

I get three static IP's from my ISP, and have two home servers that I want to run servers from on port 80.

So I'd like my router to claim two of the external IP addresses and port-forward port 80 on one external IP to one server on the LAN and port 80 on the second external IP to the second server on the LAN.

As far as I can tell, my current router can only take a single external IP.

I need both servers to be visible externally on port 80, changing ports is not an option for me because my clients are locked to that port. Both servers also share files with each other, so they need to be on the same LAN, which prevents using a second router.

As far as I can tell this should be theoretically possible, can anyone please shed some light on how best to set this up?

New to this, need help on what to buy for my needs

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:49 PM PST

I am tired of paying $15 per month for Xfinity/Comcast's bad router/modem and I am unable to monitor data usage of each device (they use to have the feature on their website, but I can no longer find it).

I need help choosing a router/modem combo that would be able to monitor how much each device is using per month. I need 4 ethernet ports. Also, the cord that connects to my current router/modem is a coaxial cable, in case that is helpful to know.

    Thanks for helping!

Why has my internet speed randomly slowed down in recent weeks?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 04:13 PM PST

Lately I've noticed Alexa won't work sometimes, websites/apps on my phone won't load as fast, I can't back up to iCloud because of poor connection issues and a laptop won't load websites as fast. These are wi-fi connected devices. Stuff connected through an ethernet cable like Xbox and my desktop have worked fine. I've been researching what the problem could be and I have no clue.

A couple of things to keep in mind...

    - There are no new connected devices in the house.

    - The Archer A7 router has been rebooted and Windows 10 is up to date

    - Modem and router are in the same locations they've always been in when the internet has worked fine.

    - I downloaded NetSpot to see what wi-fi channels are in use. Apparently I'm on channel 10. There are four other nearby connections either on channel 6 or 11.

Anybody ever use this test or recommend a different one?

Advice needed for Linksys EA7500 and Google wifi/Google Nest wifi

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:07 PM PST

Hi, I have an ISP with internet speed of 1Gbps and currently have Linksys Ea7500 set up as the router with a secondary router as an access point. But I am not getting the signal to reach to areas that I need and am starting to consider going to mesh. However, I still want to maintain with a regular router due to the 4 ethernet port that is available and add on mesh to it. I am looking at Google wifi and Google nest wifi but I noticed that Google nest wifi bundle comprises of a router and a satellite while goggle wifi has 3 satellite that are interchangeable. Can anyone advise if my setup is possible with either Google wifi or Google nest wifi? Thanks!

Running Fiber to Shed- does this make sense?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:56 AM PST

    Hi All,

I have a shed ~150 feet away from ethernet. I am going to run an IP camera or two out of the shed. I am planning on trenching and making a run of fiber, with the ability of future-proofing. I believe I will run a 1 inch conduit, and then 3 fiber runs in the conduit. Two lines will be active- the third will be run as a spare.

    The supplies that I'm thinking:

    Wire: 45 meters x 3: https://www.fs.com/products/74386.html

    SFP Module x4: http://www.fs.com/products/29838.html

    Media Converter x 4: https://www.fs.com/products/35333.html

Did I shop correctly, meaning, will this gear all work together to get the job done?

Wireless will not pass wife factor, and the shed is on a subpanel far-removed from the main panel, so I am concerned about those receivers that you plug into outlets.

CenturyLink VDSL vs Spectrum Cable for internet

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:37 PM PST

Since spectrum wouldn't budge on charging me $109 a month for 100mbps (I get like 50 of that at the modem), I put in an order for CenturyLink who is cheaper for the 100/10 plan. But they also said they used VDSL bonded + vectoring, I'm really not sure what this is or how it compares in ping, upload and download to charters cable lines. The person also mentioned a data cap being possible, but not likely to be enforced. Should I keep CenturyLink or after 35days, switch back to Spectrum so I can take advantage of the business plan or residential internet speed promos? I'm in Minnesota around the Rochester area.

The rep also said that DSL each person has there own line and cable is shared like an artery?

Is this DSL or is it a fiber optic node with DSL to the home?

    Customer Support is A+ though.

I have 400Mbps Internet. What's the best powerline adapter that wouldn't be overkill?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:56 PM PST

Looking to hardwire my PS4 to my 400mbps network using powerline. Don't want to buy something that is unnecessarily overqualified. Am interested in pass through AC capacity, though. What are some good solutions out there?

Guide me to a home network!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:47 PM PST

I just closed on my first home and it has existing cat 5e outlets in each bedroom and the living room.

This is the enclosure in the master bedroom closet upstairs: https://m.imgur.com/a/rEOif9x

I want to setup a home network from this enclosure and then connect my office to the network with a wired connection.

I don't know much about home networking to this extent, we have been in an apartment for 10 years. We don't use cable tv, just gigabit internet from xfinity and lots of streaming and gaming.

I plan to purchase a google mesh setup with a couple access points and would like to locate these using the pre wired locations. What else do i need? I have a modem and the hope that this isn't too outside of my abilities.

If its not too much trouble as well... What is the cablevision box for? Do i need to utilize it for anything? What is the blue cat 5 running into the att box? I was thinking the green line is for the dsl that was installed previously.

Thanks in advance if anyone has time to help a noob homeowner out.

Can the SSID on my AP be the same as the router its coming from?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:35 PM PST

    Current set up as follows:

    1) Airport Extreme on top floor, OK WIFI.

    2) Tp-LINK AX3000 on middle floor set up as an AP which the Ethernet cable is from the Extreme.

    3) TP-LINK WIFI EXTENDER in garage- Set up as an AP with a Ethernet Cable from the Tp-Link Router.

So, can I name the AP in the garage the same name as the Tp-LINK AX3000 or should I keep them separate names?

    Thank you!

[Help needed] External IP keeps changing every 15-20 seconds on websites, but remains the same on router

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:17 PM PST

I've been with the same fiber ISP for years, and even though I've always had a dynamic IP (you have to pay extra to get a static IP), it only changed every two or three months - or, of course, whenever I was forced to reboot their ONT and my router (an Asus RT-AC86U with the latest Asuswrt-Merlin firmware).

Now, the dynamic IP provided by my ISP keeps changing every 15-20 seconds, or basically on every refresh of websites like WhatIsMyIPAddress.com. That's a problem for me, because I use Getflix (a Smart DNS service) to bypass geoblocking restrictions by streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and HBO Now (it hasn't worked with Netflix for a while, but that's an issue for another time).

The way it works is that I have to login to their website and manually update my IP every time it changes, so it matches the one registered on their servers, so their DNS actually works.

The thing is, the actual external (WAN) IP, as displayed on my router's GUI (and confirmed to be the one provided by my ISP) isn't changing. It has remained the same for quite a while. The one that shows up on Getflix, WhatIsMyIPAddress, etc., however, is completely different, and changes constantly.

I'm not sure what's the deal here. My ISP did recently started offering IPv6, and I do have that enabled on my router (the prefix even matches the one displayed by WhatIsMyIPAddress, which also remains the same), but Getflix only has support for IPv4, and because it's literally always changing, I can't make use of their DNS to bypass geoblocking, since it constantly requires an IP update.

Any ideas as to how I fix this?

How do I achieve my NAS goals?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:52 PM PST

I have an old external usb drive and a Linksys wrt1900ac. Unfortunately Catalina breaks Samba v1 functionality in MacOS. My router is so old it only does samba 1.

I ideally would be able to run a plex sever, torrent client, and personal cloud storage from whatever device I buy. I either need to buy a dedicated nas, a small low power device to act as the server like a Pi 4 or the new Anstle Nano, or a new router that can perform all those functions.

I'm basically looking for whatever the best option is for <$200, but I would go a little over for a nice Synology nas. I already have 1.6 tb of flash storage so I'd prefer to upgrade my router for cheap, since it is 7 years old.

    MoCa adapter help

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:09 PM PST

Hello, I'm having an issue getting an internet connection with my moca adapter. Current setup is:

Netgear ax6000 router Netgear cm1200 modem Motorola 2.0 moca adapter Xfinity gigabit internet

I have one moca adapter in my room. Coax going into the adapter and Ethernet going from adapter to PC. PC recognizes that there is a connection but no internet access. Link light is not lit as well. I have power cycled the moca adapter and no luck. Also tried hooking the Ethernet to PS4 and no luck there either.

Could it be that I need another moca adapter at the modem/router? Kind of stuck here. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Running Ethernet cable behind interior walls?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 04:42 PM PST

Yo what's up. So I'm trying to run an Ethernet cable through my mom's house. They have a gateway for internet downstairs in the living room and I do not get WiFi in my bedroom upstairs. My phone connects but it's very spotty and cuts out every couple seconds making watching movies not enjoyable.

My xbox does not connect at all. It may connect for a max of five seconds but it will immediately disconnect so wifi isn't really an option for my situation. I want to use Ethernet as it's fast and the only realistic way for me to use internet in my room but I'm not really sure how to go about doing this.

If anyone could give me advice how I should go about doing this and if an electrician may be able to help. My mom's husband doesn't really trust me at all so he will be against me doing anything myself. I just want some information and counsel so I know what has to be done. I just need to convince him to allow me to pay an electrician or whoever.

I apologize if this post is against the rules I've never posted here before. Though I'd be hella grateful for any help. If you need more context, I can provide. Thanks for listening!

    Help with choosing switch

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 04:32 PM PST

    Hi all,

My Netgear switch appears to have died, so I'm looking for a new one.

Right now, I am not a huge, advanced user so I just need a dumb one.

One thing I'm not sure of is switching capacity and forwarding capacity.

I have a Plex server and a NAS, so I moved a ton of data frequently.

Would a regular dumb switch like this be fine:

    https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-16-Port-Gigabit-Ethernet-Unmanaged/dp/B01AX8XHRQ

Or would something else be faster in terms of moving large amounts of data around? (Obviously 10GB would, but looking for $150 or less, if that would get me anything better)

Is plugging an ethernet cable into an extender worth doing

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:41 PM PST

So basically my modem is in my living room upstairs and on the opposite side of the house but I have an extender down here in my basement where I play my games and things. My connection in games most of the time is terrible but the download speeds to me are perfectly fine. Is it worth plugging the ethernet cable into the extender, and will I have a better connection in doing so?

Setting up a wired network? Will these Cat5e cables work already wired in the house?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 04:26 PM PST

New to home networking other than setting up my basic router and modem so bear with me if I'm asking stupid questions.

Current set up is a Motorola router and a TP Link N450(I probably should just update this) in a 1300 sqft condo with two levels, upstairs is the living room and downstairs bedrooms. Modem and router are currently upstairs and the attached photo is downstairs.

Ideally I want to get my home Ethernet jacks working. I have 8 Cat5e cables leading to various points in the house and all going to the panel downstairs in the photo. Downstairs Panel Cat5e

First question is can I use these cables to provide data throughout the house? And any idea why the blue and bluewhite were connected together?

So here is my plan and please tell me if there is a better way to do this. I'd like to do it in two phases.

    Phase 1

Buy a patch panel and patch all the cables to the patch panel. Then buy a switch and have my switch connected to the router(still upstairs). Modem-> router->walljack->switch->patchpanel->wall jacks.

That will work right? This should provide data to all the Ethernet jacks in my house I believe.

    Phase 2

Eventually move the router and modem downstairs to the panel in the photo or close to it. Then I would need an access point upstairs and one downstairs in the bedroom for wifi. If I have my AP upstairs and downstairs do I still need my TP Link router or another router in the equation?

Let me know if I need to provide more information. Thanks in advance!
