PSA: Do not name your custom theme/style anything with an emoji Posted: 28 Jan 2020 05:18 AM PST I noticed my wife changed her lockscreen font on her Pixel 3a XL. Somehow I had never seen the ability to do that, but it looked interesting. I created a custom theme from setting > display > style and theme To be funny, I named it: 😎😎😎 The joke was on me, as I can now not even get into the display menu without it crashing. I contacted Google, and their best suggestion is to completely reset my phone. Which would be great if Google backup actually worked well. So now I'm trying to decide if I want to just never go into that menu again, or bite the bullet and completely reconfigure my phone. Thanks, google! Edit: Got the fix
Thank goodness reddit is more helpful than Google support. [link] [comments]

Realme : Not so developer friendly brand and namesake open source OPPO devices. Posted: 28 Jan 2020 08:21 AM PST I recently bought a realme XT because it had an unlocked bootloader and it has been a nightmare to work with this device because of the following reasons. Fingerprint fiasco : They linked fingerprint with the widevine L1 so that when someone unlocks their bootloader, the widevine level changes and fingerprint stops working. This is done intentionally and they recently fixed it with the A16 update mostly due to bad PR. They are intentionally trying to push the idea that unlocked devices are insecure, when in reality, it is not. They don't update the kernel source, even after releasing android 10 whereas oneplus and xiaomi do it before they release their official rom. The existing kernel source for realme XT is outdated and doesn't even work with this device anymore. I informed them several days back and it's like they havent heard my grievances. The flash tool for realme devices is only available through service centres and they basically don't intend to make it open to public. So, when someone bricks their phone, they have to physically visit the service centre to get it flashed. Meanwhile, oneplus and xiaomi devices can be unbricked way easily. Encrpypted ROMS. They encrypt their ROMS with AES encryption fully knowing that we can pull partitions to back them up with unlocked bootloaders. So, there is no reason to encrypt in my opinion. The only result it achieves being that it slows the developers down. Their unlock tool apk file doesn't work with different android versions. So, you will not be able to downgrade and need to wait for official unlock tool when its available. So, stay away from realme if you are looking for a developer friendly device. It's 2020. What happened to Gboard's "federated learning"? Posted: 28 Jan 2020 03:14 PM PST It's 2020 and Gboard's swiping is still awful. That is, it was amazing when it was Google Keyboard, and then it just went downhill from there. A while back, there was some A/B testing going on, on a feature that supposedly fixed the swipe accuracy. But months have passed already, and things are still awful. The fabled bordered center suggestion never appeared. It definitely did exist, but everyone has forgotten about this feature: https://www.google.com/search?q=gboard+federated+learning+site:www.reddit.com Any ideas, perhaps from someone that works on Gboard? Regarding Sprint's $50 deal to fix the screen of a dropped Galaxy Posted: 27 Jan 2020 04:47 PM PST They wont take your phone if the back glass is cracked. Dont waste an hour of your life like I did. Edit for clarity: they wont touch your phone if the back is cracked [link] [comments]
I feel like Qualcomm is the only company that actually knows how to make a mobile SoC Posted: 28 Jan 2020 04:28 PM PST Mediatek phones are just so easy to brick when you try to root them. Theres no proper custom ROM support for it and Gcam is poorly optimized to the point where you just want to use the stock camera app. Also developers just can't make properly optimized apps for anything that isn't Snapdragon. Look up the Redmi Note 8 Pro trying to emulate Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy and you'll notice that even though it beats the 730 and 835 in Antutu it will perform like a 670 on the dolphin emulator. The situation is even worse with Kirin, Apple and Exynos, since they are both locked to a single manufacturer (with rare exceptions). This is why benchmark scores are useless in real life, this is the stuff they don't tell you. Like it or not qualcomm is still the gold standard among mobile processors [link] [comments] |
