    Linux mint won't recognize TV

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 01:43 PM PST

I have a Intel NUC D54250WYK USFF i5-4250u 1.3GHz 8GB RAM and a fresh install of linux mint. Everything works fine with a computer monitor (hooked up through HDMI), but when connected to my tv (hooked up through same HDMI cord and nuc restarted with it plugged in), which is where I want this stationed, it doesn't recognize my Hisense 4k tv. Linux Mint has been fully updated.

It says "no input, is it connected?" This is a Hisense 4k tv with Roku built in (Hisense mode number 55RGE) . It automatically recognizes the connection.

The HDMI is set to automatic, which I did try to manual set it to both HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 and restarted the Nuc.

This HDMI cable works when connected to this tv when connected to my other Nuc with Windows 10.

Any tips on how to get it to work? If I set my resolution at the computer terminal, will it keep its settings when I bring it to the tv? If so, what should I set my settings at?

Can no longer connect to the internet via Ubuntu or Mint

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 01:35 PM PST

I installed Ubuntu over the summer on an old '09 MacBook, and it worked fine for quite awhile. Moved to a new place and the Wifi connection was there for about a day. I've been trying to get it to work ever since, and yesterday I succeeded just by messing around with the settings for thirty minutes, and now it's back down again. Recognizes the wifi connection, but won't connect to it. Connects via ethernet and hotspot just fine. Someone suggested trying mint, so I booted it with a live USB and it didn't recognize anything wifi connections. I went to Driver Manager, selected "bcmwl-kernel-source" as the wireless driver source and it now reads as having "1 proprietary driver in use." From everything I've seen, the wifi should now show up, but nothing does. I've been trying installing drivers via command line through Ubuntu, and that doesn't make a difference either. I'm reaching out one more time, but I'm pretty much ready to give up on Linux altogether.

    Software Free 240mm AIO

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 09:38 AM PST

Not sure if this is the right sub to post in, please let me know if there's a better/more relevant one.

I'm looking for a 240mm AIO that has a max thickness of 54mm(with a 25mm fan). I run Pop!OS 19.10, so Corsair and NZXT units require windows software to not run in "silent" mode. I'm specifically looking for an AIO because I have a Corsair 250D, and it can't fit large air coolers. I know that asetek sells OEM units that don't require software, but it's harder to find them as they only sell to system builders.

Uninstalled nginx, but folders remained. So I deleted /etc/nginx. When I reinstall there is no nginx directory

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 12:44 PM PST

I wanted to reinstall it, but when I removed it with sudo apt-get remove nginx ---purge

The thing is, it didn't remove any of the files or directories in /etc/nginx. So I removed them with sudo rm -rf. But when I reinstall it with sudo apt-get install nginx, it says it is install, but that directory and the stuff inside is not present.

Here is what happens when I install nginx.

    salo@cornserver:/etc$ sudo apt install nginx

    Reading package lists... Done

    Building dependency tree

    Reading state information... Done

nginx is already the newest version (1.14.0-0ubuntu1.6).

The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:

    libtorrent-rasterbar9

Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove it.

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

So what can I do here? Is nginx actually installed? Where are those directories with `nginx.conf` and stuff in it?

    Thanks

    Hello everybody!

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:42 AM PST

So a few days ago i found my old pc and i wanted to make it decent. I repaired some hardware stuff (they aren't great) and i wanted to install linux mint, because it looks similar to win7 (the current os on this pc) and i heard that it is noob friendly. Now the questions are:

    1. The pc has a ssd only with windows7 on it and a hdd with all my files (photos, documents etc). When i install linux, will it delete only the ssd and replace win7 with mint or will it also erase all my files from the hdd?
    2. My hardware isn't great. All i found on the web about the compatibility are some 7-8 year old forums and i'm not sure if they are still correct. The only component people said it doesn't work great is the mobo (gigabyte ga-ma74gm-2sh rev 3 or rev 4). The rest are: amd phenom ii x2 545 3000mhz, geforce gtx 550 ti and currently 2gb of ram but i am searching another card to have 3 or 4 (ddr2 1066mhz). Are these components ok to run linux on? If it will work in the live env with the stick plugged in will it work fine after the installation and deletion of win7?

Thanks for you patience to read this stuff!

What does the built-in bash shell in Win10 do? Seems to be an incomplete bash shell...are bash scripts written on Win10 usable in Linux?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 08:49 AM PST

Just typing "bash" into Start of a Win10 machine brings up a application called "Bash Shell". At first glance this seems to be a typical bash shell (doing echo $0 prints /usr/bin/bash, which actually doesn't make sense to me because that directory shouldn't exist on a Windows system...) but it is missing many commands such as vi, nano, apt, etc.

Why is it missing those commands? Are those not built into bash? If so, how might I be able to use them on the bash shell in Win10?

Also, I'm wanting to learn bash scripting but just can't access a Linux machine right now, hence why I'm doing this. But is this a good idea? Will scripts made on Windows work when run on Linux machines? (Some things I need the scripts to do is access directories, copy/paste/move files, and emulate keystrokes)

Need help erasing a partition and expanding another

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 08:06 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/PExyNKo

Here's the setup of my drive. I used half of it to test drive Kubuntu while leaving the other half containing all my Windows steam games intact. I'm ready to make the jump now though and I want to get rid of /dev/sdc1 and use that extra ~500GB to expand /home, can I do that?

My main concern though is that /dev/sdc1 currently has the "boot" flag on it. I'm 99% sure that, when I installed Kubuntu, I installed GRUB onto /dev/sdc, not /dev/sdc1, so I should be able to just delete /dev/sdc1 and leave the bootloader and everything else intact, right? If I delete this partition, I want to still be able to boot into my Kubuntu installation, of course!

    Dual boot MAC address questions

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 12:23 AM PST

I have an Acer Aspire that I dual booted a while ago to run ubuntu alongside windows 10. I recently got into logging MAC addresses and subnets in my home network. Should the MAC be the same for both OS? The physical machine is the same, I feel like it makes sense to be the same MAC, but to have the same brand, model, and OS all being windows prominent with no mention to the ubuntu OS? can i physically change the partition to run off of a different MAC?

New Laptop - Black Screen on Live and Install

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 06:33 AM PST

So I've been trying to get Linux installed on a new laptop and have been running into quite a few issues.

    Computer in question: https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-envy-x360-13-ar0062nr

    Ryzen 5 3500u w/ Radeon Vega 8 graphics.

Initially I couldn't boot the USB - this was solved by disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS.

When I say went to black screen below - the backlight is on, in some cases a blinking "_" is present in the top left. The computer and display are clearly on though.

    Parrot OS

I really struggled to get the Parrot installer to run. Consistently said missing g2ldr.mbr despite file being present. Both Windows Debian Installer and USB resulted in this. Fixed by writing USB in DD mode with Rufus. However, once the USB loaded all installer and live disk options lead to black screen.

    Manjaro - XFCE

Manjaro went a little smoother off of USB boot. Loading with free drivers resulted in black screen. Nonfree loaded the live OS, but had some serious graphical artifacting (squares etc...). I managed to get this installed successfully, but once it was installed I could get as far as the login screen. The username + password login screen worked fine, but upon logging in I was presented with the black screen. The terminal worked fine and I tried messing with some drivers / stuff via mhwd I found online to no avail.

    Linux Mint - Cinammon

Generally the easiest to work with for me in the past... USB booted fine, but attempting to load live OS resulted in black screen.

    Debian - Testing - amd64 w/ XFCE

Installer runs fine, system boots into black screen with blinking _

Any ideas or help on how to get this running would be appreciated. I have a feeling it's all related to graphics drivers but I'm not certain how to fix that if I can't get the live OS loaded in most cases.
