Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:00 AM PST Hello, I'm thinking about switching from Windows to something else and I heard Linux is an interesting OS. What would the main advantages of Linux over Windows? Also, I heard there are different types of Linux and if that's true which one would be the best for someone who never used Linux before? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Dec 2019 08:19 AM PST I've recently bought a new drive and I wanted to change from Windows to Linux, but I need to be able to play most of my games. Is there a difference between distros gaming performance? If so, what's the best one? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2019 08:58 AM PST I'm on an old 2013 Macbook Pro and I want to switch to Linux, I've been recommended POP OS or Manjaro. I'll be using my laptop for gaming and uni work mainly and I don't know which to pick. Help me plz. [link] [comments] |
My dual boot situation is a mess when choosing OSs Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:37 PM PST I have Windows 10 and I just installed CentOS 8. In order to even get to CentOS I would have to reboot and open up my boot options, choose my SSD, and then I'd get the menu with CentOS options (there are 3 of them, I need to get a picture). Otherwise, it boots into Windows automatically, presumably because of fast boot. I ended up shutting off fast boot and could not boot back into Windows because there was simply no option to. How can I set this up? I think I need to edit the Grub menu. [link] [comments] |
Running a command on startup in Solus Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:34 PM PST Hey all, So I'm trying to get a command to run on startup, but everything that I've searched around for doesn't seem to work for Solus, typically due to the lean repos Solus keeps. I'm running Gnome, and I want to run to run as soon as I turn on my computer because I can't live without some good touchpad gestures, which Solus Gnome sadly doesn't have by default. The gestures all work great when I run the command, but they don't work unless I run the command. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |

Trying to install Nvidia drivers on CentOS 8 with ELRepo Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:55 PM PST I just spent a bunch of time trying to install Nvidia drivers with ELRepo. I am stuck and beyond stuck. I kept finding all kinds of different things to try and nothing works. I am stuck trying to use the nvidia-detect. See: https://elrepo.org/tiki/nvidia-detect The documentation is confusing to me as a noob. kmod-nvidia I don't know how to interpret what this is saying to do. I've even copy/pasted it literally haha. I am not sure why I can't find/run the nvidia-detect. [link] [comments] |
Open a file in a different desktop from terminal Posted: 07 Dec 2019 04:38 AM PST So I'm running several virtual desktops and I'd like to know how I can open a file in a different desktop than the one the terminal is running on. Let's say I have terminal running on desktop 2, so I want to open a PDF using Okular: What can I do to open in a different desktop, let's say, desktop 1? [link] [comments] |
Linux a lot slower then windows plus uses a lot more ram Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:02 PM PST Hello I was on a server talking about how linux was super buggy blah blah etc. someone recommended kubuntu and i really enjoyed it, first distro after ubuntu with unity that actually looked nice and was usable. Except for the speed and ram usage. Basically, if i play csgo on linux it is waaaaay slower on linux (stutters, lags on low settings, has around 55fps) while on windows it runs very smoothly (no stutter or anything on high settings, around 200fps). Streaming is waaaay worse too since i dont see the nvidia codec in obs. Oh, and linux uses 2gbs of ram more then windows while i would say idling (running chrome with 20 tabs or more opened (idk if thats normal for everyone it probably isnt but it is for me xd), running discord, spotify and steam) while having those apps opened, windows only used like 4.3gbs of ram while kubuntu used 6gb out of 8gb. I thought it was because of the distro but no, zorin os had the same issue. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a software to remove config/logs from already uninstalled software Posted: 07 Dec 2019 08:04 AM PST Something that bothers me for years even on Windows is that whenever I uninstall a software from my system, it doesn't delete everything. There will always be a config folder or a log that won't be removed. I just uninstalled wine and I found SO many config files, a 200MB folder and so many logs, I hate that. [link] [comments] |

Need a decent Ubuntu based Raspberry Pi 4 Distro. Posted: 07 Dec 2019 05:21 AM PST I've recently bought a Raspberry Pi 4 to use as an ad hoc fileserver and I need to put a distro on it. I've checked out a couple of the Arm based versions of a few distros, but I really want one based on Ubuntu or Debian as I learned to code and use terminal on their ecosystem. Unfortunately, I can't run Ubuntu directly as to install the Arm version of Ubuntu you have to plug the pi into the Ethernet port on your router as Ubuntu server doesn't support Wi-fi. I don't have access to my router (It's in another part of the building and I don't have a cable long enough.) Which Distro would be best to use. So far I've tried Manjaro, but I don't like the abstract Arch terminal commands it uses, I've installed Raspbian but it's a little too simplistic for my needs and I've installed Kali but there's a whole new set of issues with that, even though it's Debian based. I run Kubuntu on my main desktop, but I think the Plasma theme would be a bit too overhead heavy for a Raspberry pi 4. What would you suggest? [link] [comments] |
Getting an error saying "GPU has fallen off the bus" on my laptop in PopOS. Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:06 PM PST I am using my Thinkpad W541 with the dedicated GPU on in PopOS. Whenever the PC goes to sleep or hibernates, I get this error. Then all I can do is reboot it in order to be able to use my laptop. It's probably important to note that this never happened to me on Manjaro. It has just been happening on PopOS. Here is my system information. [link] [comments] |
Linux Noob here, wanted to use Xubuntu on my old laptop along with Win7 Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:59 PM PST Title says most of the story. I have newer used any distribution of Linux ever before. No idea about terminal commands and such. I had a 10 year old win7 laptop that I wanted to breathe new life into. I recently say an article about Xubuntu and it sounded exactly what I needed. The GUI seems noob-friendly enough. I plan dual booting my laptop. What do I need to learn before diving into it? Or is there something better to use? I have very little clue [link] [comments] |
How do I make Firefox play nice with scaling? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 04:50 AM PST Running Ubuntu 19.10 with KDE at a resolution of 2560*1440 scaled to 1.3 Right now firefox is, for some reason not scaling like every other program. Example It seems arbitrary what is scaled and what is not scaled. The interface seems unscaled and so do webpages (some elements remain small even when zooming) but the settings page do seem to scale Does anyone know this KDE that doesn't get along with firefox or firefox that doesn't like scaling in general? Is there any way to get it to scale with the rest of the system? Sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find a solution by searching for it [link] [comments] |
Installing ubuntu 18.04 LTS in ASUS ROG STRIX. (Nvidia 1650, i5 9th gen) Posted: 06 Dec 2019 07:43 PM PST I just brought an ASUS ROG STRIX laptop. I went through many online guides regarding ubuntu installation, it was not clear enough. Is there anyone who can help me with installing ubuntu on my ROG machine. Will normal installation work, if no why not. I am using ubuntu for a while in my old laptop for some time now, so I want the same in my new machine, can anyone explain what is the problem with Ubuntu and Nvidia drivers. Your help will help me take the right steps. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Go handed an old Acer Aspire One. Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:33 PM PST It used to run Windows Xp, but it's gone now. I'd like to continue using it for it's intended purpose, web browsing, movies, music, retro gaming, office. What distro would you recommend? It's 32bit and probably 512MB of RAM. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Dec 2019 02:39 PM PST My laptop was updating and had been at it for very very long! I just let it do its thing but at some point someone in the household turned off the power at the wall plug so it run out of juice. Now when I turn it on, I get this error and I don't seem to be able to find a way around it. Can you help? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2019 02:37 AM PST Hi, Could someone give some insights on what NetApp is and how it's related to the Linux ecosystem? What subreddit would be a good place to gain more knowledge of NetApp`? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Dec 2019 03:23 PM PST For instance I just installed Sketchup 2017 to use with Wine. It's installed in "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/SketchUp/SketchUp 2017". I type "wine SketchUp.exe" to run the program from the command line and get this message instead: wine: cannot find L"C:\windows\system32\SketchUp.exe" Why would it look in the Windows system folder for all the programs Wine installs? I thought that Wine's config would automatically set up different places to look for the particular software installed. Does this mean I have to manually go into every folder, and open it that way, where the program is contained if it's installed anywhere but System32 directory? How can Wine be set up to look for "Program Files" first if possible? [link] [comments] |
