Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:30 AM PST Hello i have a problem.I need to recover files from disc, but i can't mount a one single partition from disc. I have An error occurred while accessing 'Windows8_OS', the system responded: The requested operation has failed: Error mounting system-managed device /dev/sdd5: Command-line `mount "/mnt/sdd5"' exited with non-zero exit status 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read of MFT, mft=6 count=1 br=-1: Input/output error Failed to open inode FILE_Bitmap: Input/output error Failed to mount '/dev/sdd5': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details. What should i do? i' ve already used sudo fdisk -l and i have this The backup GPT table is corrupt, but the primary appears OK, so that will be used. [link] [comments] |
How to connect two monitors to a single computer in Ubuntu? Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:23 AM PST I have connected my computer to two monitors using an HDMI cable and VGA cable. Both monitors are up and running but at the moment what I do on one monitor happens on the other monitor as well. I want to set up my monitors to where I can use them independently. Right now it seems the monitors are just mirroring themselves. Is there any way to make the actions on one monitor independent from the other monitor? [link] [comments] |
Which Ubuntu flavour is the best? Posted: 19 Dec 2019 03:14 AM PST I'm looking for a resource friendly distro because my laptop is not that new. I'm a new user and everyone says go with ubuntu, because it's beginner friendly. Update: Thank you all for the suggestions! I've decided to go with Xubuntu. [link] [comments] |
Help me get into the bios or format my SSD in Zorin pls Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:26 AM PST I installed Zorin as a temporary OS for my newly built PC because I couldn't Install windows as it wasn't working. I don't have any windows devices in my house, so i figured it was probably because i was using a Mac Book to mount the windows ISO. After a month of trying different ways to install it (e.g. my friend sending me the files on Google Drive or me using Terminal to mount them to my USB) I thought that I should try to do it on Linux and later uninstall it once I've installed Windows. I was going to go with Ubuntu because its the one I've heard most about, but decided to use Zorin instead because I read somewhere that its supposed to be more friendly and easy for Linux Noobs like me. Now that I've mounted the ISO to the USB stick, I'm trying to get into the BIOS but i can't. i was told F2 was the button to mash but its not working. The screen just Flashes a little then it loads up Zorin like nothing happened. Am I doing something wrong? Alternatively, I know that i can just format my SSD and wipe Zorin clean off, but whenever I try it says its in use, which i understand, but how else am i meant to do it? TL;DR : I need a way to get into the bios on boot because right now I just make my screen flash, or a way to format my SSD even though its in use. Or if there's a way to uninstall built into the software that i just don't know about that would be helpful too thank you :) [link] [comments] |

How do I boot from USB ubuntu and not a default one? Posted: 19 Dec 2019 01:10 AM PST I'm noob... I have ubuntu 18.04 installed. I downloaded ubuntu 19.10 iso file, has checked hashsum, has it "restored" on 3GB partition on my USB stick via "Disks" application I have it connected, but when I reboot, it launches the already-installed one... I heard there's smth called "Grub" that helps with double-boot. What's that? Will it help? How do I check if it's installed? [link] [comments] |
Manjaro/Deepin shortcut to send windows between monitors? Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:00 AM PST I know on Windows you can use the Windows key and arrow keys, but there appears to be no such thing on Manjaro. Is there a way to set up a key combination that can send the active window to another monitor? One small problem is that, since I collect and use old keyboards, I don't have Windows keys on mine (though my next keyboard, which I'm getting on Christmas, should have twelve programmable keys, but that's sort of irrelevant). Is there a way I can setup, say, control + alt + left or right arrow to send the window left or right one monitor? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Trying to run script from any location, PATH is successfully set up, need help Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:53 AM PST I am trying to get further acquainted with Linux, I am at the part where I want to be able to set PATH variables in case I need to call something from a different directory. I am just trying to run a test so I created a test folder, inside the folder I put a small little script titled "ptest", the PATH to the folder it is in has definitely been set and added to my PATH variable, I can see it when I type "echo $PATH". And when I enter ptest into the terminal, I get no errors, just nothing happens, what should happen is that a file should be created in the home directory titled "test.cpp". It doesnt work if I just call ptest, but if I go into the folder and type ./ptest it works fine and the file gets created. Any help as to what I am doing wrong would be greatly appreciated. If I can only add the file to the PATH itself or if I need to [link] [comments] |

[Ubuntu 19.10] How to use San Francisco font for GNOME Shell? Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:27 AM PST The font I'm interested in is San Francisco Pro Display (SF Pro Display), it's used by Apple on Mac's and it fits well with Linux. I did change the font for my system, except shell. I've already located gnome-shell.css file in my current theme and I tried changing the font, but it just doesn't show up. "stage" part of this file looks like this: How should I change this? [link] [comments] |

First Time moving to Linux, But Ive a problem. Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:40 PM PST Hi, it's the first time I'm installing Linux,I'm trying to install Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon in my rig (4th gen Intel core I5, GTX 1060, and the motherboard is an MSI Military Class 4). So I've expierence installing Windows a lot of times and playing with the bios but yesterday when I was trying to install Linux I got this after selecting the boot option and start trying to install it: [Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata; please update microcode to version: 0x22 (or later) Couldn't get size ( and a bunch of 0's) MODSIGN: Couldn't get UEFI db list Couldn't get size (and another bunch of 0's) then the screen turns black and nothing happens. Notes : Im installing it from a USB created from Rufus. All that errors appears when I try to install the system through UEFI, If I try to install it through Legacy Bios the things I writed don't appear however the screen turns black and nothing happens. I've read that this problem can be something to do with some "secure or security" mode (I read in some that forums, but honestly I'm no bios expert and I don't to know what to do. One last thing, I installed only to try with the same usb Linux mint on my old mother's laptop and it was super easy, and now it's working perfectly. I didn't get these errors so I assume It's related to my rig's hardware in some way. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:23 AM PST So basically I have a directory (Downloads) into which I have a few programs automatically download things. These programs are supposed to clean up and delete files when the downloads complete, but that doesn't always work, so I want to schedule a cron job to run daily to delete all files and sub-directories within it that are more than 7 days old. Within this directory is sub-directory called incomplete (Downloads/incomplete) where incomplete downloads are stored, I do not want this directory or its contents to be deleted. How can I write this into my crontab? [link] [comments] |
Scan for Linux hosts and proxy on Posted: 19 Dec 2019 09:52 AM PST I am working on a Windows 10 laptop, WIFI. I know there is a Linux Kubuntu box upstairs called 'bedroom' connected to Ethernet. How can I find it's IP and proxy on? I have OS credentials. The following fails

Unable to install Ubuntu on MacBook PenDrive Posted: 19 Dec 2019 09:32 AM PST Hello everybody. I want to install Ubuntu on my Pen Drive with a MacBook Air. I downloaded the ISO, imaged it using sudo dd onto my 32 Gigabytes USB PenDrive (SanDisk). It booted just about fine. I used the "Try Ubuntu without installing". To my relief, it let me try Ubuntu and everything seemed to work just about fine. Try without Install But then when I clicked Install Ubuntu from my Desktop, I chose the language and keyboard layout and normal installation or minimal Then it asked what time of installation I wanted I chose "Something Else" as I do not want to "Erase disk and install Ubuntu". Then it showed the partition table and I do not know how to proceed from here. I first thought of navigating to /dev/sdb NOT /dev/sda as I believe /dev/sda was my internet SSD. I clicked install after changing Device for boot loader installation to my SanDisk but it said it failed to boot as I did not select 'ROOT'. Please one of you help me proceed. Thanks guys and gals. Edit: Please reply as soon as possible as I badly need Ubuntu. Thanks. Any help is appreciated [link] [comments] |

Persistent partition, Linux Mint Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:40 AM PST Seemingly everything I need is available for Linux, and I'm pretty much ready to plunge. Although, I do want to start with some training wheels, as an early experience with Ubuntu has worried me. I'm having issues with persistent install on a USB drive 64GB. I am using Rufus, tried both partition schemes, and when I try to boot, it blue screens me with an error code (unbootable). This is pretty much where guides I've found stop being helpful. Are there any solutions to this? Should I make a "full install" and partition it from the live disk? Can that even be done? Is it necessary? (Cinnamon 19.3) [link] [comments] |
