Simple Questions - December 19, 2019

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

• Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
• I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
• I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

What video card should I get?

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:11 AM PST

I currently have:

Ryzen 5 3600

GTX 1080

Corsair LPX 3200 16gb RAM

21:9 3440x1440p 120hz monitor.

Basically I'm finding it hard to get frame rates above 60 on most AAA games. Just wondering if I'm having an issue with my video card or it could possibly be another component.

Thanks for any advice :)

Edit: Thanks for all of the feedback everyone. Sorry I wasn't a little more clear in what I was asking, but the majority of the answers were what I was hoping to get from this. :)

Having a bit of a dilemma regarding x570 motherboards. Could use some advice.

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 05:34 AM PST

Hi,

I'm currently putting together my first build and I'm currently stumped on selecting a motherboard. I've narrowed it down to two options: The Aorus Pro and the Aorus Ultra. My issue is that Gigabyte for some stupid reason, chose not to release the Pro Wifi in Europe so I'm stuck deciding whether to go for the Pro and buy an additional wifi card or say fuck it and buy the Ultra. Point is; I definitely need USB-C, Wifi and Bluetooth. Also quite ridiculous that one has to pay £300+ just to have post code display and a clear CMOS button.....

This is my build so far. Feel free to scrutinise.

Why do people prefer mechanical keyboards? Also, keyboard and mouse recommendations.

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 06:30 AM PST

Hello!

I've seen on previous posts that people are rather dismissive of membrane keyboards and prefer mechanical ones. I've had the offer of a new keyboard and mouse for christmas and, having only used membrane keyboards as far as I'm aware, thought I'd ask what the difference is. In short, what's the big deal about?

Also, if you had to recommend a keyboard and mouse at the moment, what would it be? I'm still using an old dell keyboard I got for free along with a gigabyte M6900 mouse.

Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet, not achieving 600 mb/s

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:29 AM PST

My internet supplier is selling me 600 mb/s, which I know I have since I hooked other PC to the Ethernet and it reach them.

I have an MSI FX990 Gaming motherboard with a Killer E2205 Gigabit Ethernet/lan, and I upgraded the drivers and followed all instructions here https://support.killernetworking.com/knowledge-base/optimizing-e2200-e2400-e2500-advanced-driver-settings/ and here https://support.killernetworking.com/knowledge-base/ethernet-link-speed-capped-at-100-mbps/ and nothing there solves my problem.

What on something holy is happening? what can be the cause? :/ my computer should get the 600 mb/s, but it stuck around 380/400 mb/s. Also my PC build is almost the same as the other pc I connected and got the 600 mb/s, but with plus 8 GB ram, (mine is 16 and the other 24).

Thanks for your time :)

Tiny Deep Learning Workstation: Recommendations?

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 03:22 PM PST

My budget is $4000 to build a video analytics box. I'm In USA/$USD. I was priced out at $3500 or so but I found a deal on the processor, so I'm down to $3200

notes:

• The 2970wx I chose because it currently runs on a Dell R730 with 2x Xeon E5-2680 V3, so the core count and clock speed is comparable. I'm going to be running at least 5 VMs on this box, and a couple of them need serious power (Hypervisor is going to be ESXi, GPU passthrough only to one machine)

• The 2080ti I'm going with because my program needs more than 8gb to run, and the 2000 series cards absolutely crush the 1000 series in openCL performance. Would be nice to save $500 and get a 1080ti, but the performance is just too juicy.

• I could probably get away with 64gb of RAM, but the headroom is nice, especially for all these virtual machines.

• this does not include OS, because after ESXi licensing, 4x windows server keys, 2x Red Hat keys, and software licenses, we're talking firmly into the six figures, if not seven lmao

• monitors, peripherals, etc are all sorted. It's going to be packaged with a laptop and run headless

The case is the biggest thing I'd like help on. I don't want to pay out the ass for a super rugged case, but I will if someone can find one. This machine is going to be used as a portable demo machine, it's going to be tossed around a lot. Something with robust GPU mounting would be much appreciated. It has to be the same size or smaller as the Fractal case I have picked out currently. It'll be packed tightly into a pelican case, with a few odds and ends, hence the water cooler. I will make provisions for airflow, but it's gonna be pretty tight.

i5/i7 or ryzen 7?

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:52 AM PST

Hey y'all!

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU. I currently have:

Ryzen 5 2400g

Asus B-450 F Gaming Motherboard

MSI Ventus OC RTX 2060

16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX

AMD Wraith Cooler (came with CPU)

I'm looking to upgrade, so I just need suggestions on the best CPU to go with my GPU. So far I've been suggested to get a Ryzen 5 3600 or higher. Please leave your suggestions down below and I'll do my best to respond. :)

PS. Would love an upvote to get more opinions on this.

EDIT #1: So based on popular opinion, my final choices are either a Ryzen 5 3600, or the Ryzen 7 3700, or the Ryzen 7 3700x. I have also had a few people tell me that Intel will give me a slight performance boost, so I don't know if those people are wrong, or if they have a point. Either way, I am highly leaning to AMD over Intel right now.

EDIT #2: 60 people have given me their helpful input! That is pretty impressive considering this is my first post on this subreddit! I am so proud of this community :)

Provide any additional details you wish below.

My intention is to purchase everything excepting the GPU now, and then save up for a while and grab myself either a 2080 super or TI. Next year I might purchase a 4900x, if it's on AM4.

A friend of mine believes this ram kit would be superior, but I'm not convinced as the overall latency is basically the same, the timings are worse, and it's over the infinity fabric 2 to 1 threshold. The only benefit I can really see would be its smaller size, being able to fit in the normal D15 with both its fans. I should be able to fit a smaller fan onto front of the D15S so I'm not sure there's much of a loss there anyways.

As for the case, I decided to spring this one because it has deceptively good airflow despite its lack of a front intake. Also because it looks nice.

Double Slot Card and this Motherboard ?

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:34 AM PST

Hi all,

I am trying to build something like this for video production/editing (NOT gaming) and SOME CAD programs.

I noticed that the Video Card is double slot.

1. How do you pick a good motherboard?
2. Will that Card work well with the motherboard i have?
3. How do you know WHEN you have enough Slots?

Anyone see a problem with this board and video card COMBO?

Thanks very much for your help!

Benchmarking tool to stress test stability and stuttering?

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 03:08 PM PST

Most of the benchmarks I've tried the "stress test" option don't really keep track of anything.

Specifically I want to let something run for say, 4 hours, come back and check if there has been any frametime spikes during that 4 hours.

I cannot use Afterburner's OSD as Afterburner for some reason makes Borderless GSYNC not function. And I want to stress test with GSYNC on so it's identical to a game.

I was just wondering if there's any benchmarks like 3dmark that will run for a set amount of time and keep track of frametimes and specifically record any abnormalities and how often they occur.

What is a stock cooler? Also, how would I install my OS on my laptop onto this new PC?

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 02:58 PM PST

So I was looking into this build as a budget PC gaming build that would potentially be my first PC build ever. But I noticed that it says it does not come with a stock cooler and that I would need to purchase my own. Just curious what this is.

Also, assuming this PC does not come pre-installed with Windows 10, how would I load the OS onto this machine? I'm currently just using my laptop for every day tasks.

Mechanical Keyboard Suggestions

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:31 AM PST

Hey y'all,

My other post got my question answered relatively fast, so I thought I would ask this question as well.

I currently use a membrane keyboard, the Razer Cynosa Chroma, and needless to say, it's hot garbage. The key's are very wobbly on the board, they make a horrible rattling sound even when I just rest my hands on the keyboard. So, this holiday season, I've decided to finally make the switch to a mechanical keyboard. Just some things to note; yes, I have tried mechanical keyboards in the past, (Anne Pro II and the Razer Blackwidow Elite). Yes, I definitely prefer mechanical over any other type of keyboard. Also, I really enjoyed the switches on the Anne Pro II (not sure which ones they were; trying to find out right now). I prefer clicky switches, a nice audible sound when you press down on the key, and that little bump you feel when pressing the key down. My budget is under $150 if possible, but please let me know if that is just really unreasonable. Oh, and one last thing, RGB is a must (haha don't flame me please), and 60% keyboards are okay with me.

TL:DR - I use a membrane keyboard currently, I want to switch to a mechanical keyboard. Budget is ~$150, and RGB is preferred. 60% keyboards are okay, and I enjoy clicky switches that make a nice audible sound when pressed.

Cheers,

Recently ordered the parts for my first build, taking advantage of some Black Friday deals. Researched and tried my best to choose compatible and up to date components and watched some videos on assembly before I started. Overall the assembly process went fairly well, except at one point I was worried about MB or CPU damage when installing the Wraith cooler. It was very difficult to put on the clips and I worried that I put a lot of stress on the MB and CPU... Eventually I got the clips on and hoped it would be OK.

• Installed RAM to the recommended slots.
• Installed graphics card to the 1st PCIe slot.
• Installed both Samsung EVO NVMe cards.
• Installed MB spacers into case and mounted the MB
• Installed new Corsair case fans to a single 4-pin splitter, and then that to a 12V fan module on the MB
• Installed the front panel I/O, to the MB.
• Installed Power cables (the 24 pin ATX, 8 pin AND 4 pin CPU), PCIe power to graphics card etc.

Finally it was time to boot...

Big Issue

• No response or indication of power on motherboard. Toggling the power on/off did not cause the computer to POST. No fans spinning up or sounds, nothing!
• GPU LEDs lit up, so there was power getting to GPU.

Troubleshooting:

• rechecked front I/O connections and compared to manual, seemed correct.
• rechecked for loose connections, especially CPU power and all connections seemed fine.
• RAM and graphics card appear to be installed in the right order and place.
• I had the HDMI plugged into the graphics card. I also tried the MB but there are no integrated graphics so I didn't expect that to work.
• Checked the PIN Out of the Corsair CPU power cables, although the shape between EPS/ATX differ it appears that the voltages were correct and in the right location (EPS/ATX 8 pin and a EPS/ATX 4+4) was used, but please see my question below.

Next Steps and Questions:

1) Can someone comment on why the Corsair uses an EPS/ATX 8 pin cord instead of just an ATX/ATX cord? Are these truly cross compatible, and is the PSU correct for this MB?

The EPS side is able to be plugged in easily to my MB (didn't force it) even though the connectors don't have a perfect shape match (in this case the rounded pins on the EPS cable can fit into squares, but not vice-versa).

2) Should I remove the graphics card and try again? Don't I need the graphics card to view the BIOS setup?

3) Should I try to flash the BIOS? This MB should have been compatible with Ryzen 7 CPUs so I was hoping not to.

4) Would the computer try to post if for some reason the MB or CPU was damaged during install of the cooler? In what circumstances might it be totally dead like mine is now?

5) I need to buy an MB speaker and see if I'm getting any error codes. Surprised that my MB didn't come with one. Sorry I can't report on this right now.

6) If I need to strip this down and start again, how can I remove the CPU without first warming it up? I'm worried about the thermal paste sticking to the processor.

Fortunately it sounds like I can get a MB and CPU replacement but I want to try and troubleshoot before stripping everything down and starting over.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

When I select "shut down" in windows, and then press the power button to start the system, I see MSI splash screen but then it says No signal and goes into power saving mode.

However; if I then press the restart button during this issue, everything boots up just fine. Also, if I want it to work normally on the initial start (after shutting down from windows) I have to cut the power to the entire system; switching the surge protector off then on and only then will the initial press of the power button have everything work as intended.

Money is not an object for this guy, and he doesn't want to upgrade things a year from now.this is what I've put together without going absolutly nuts and getting things they'd never use (his son is 16) probably going to use the pcs for primarily FPS and MOBA games

Anything you guys would swap out?

I built my new pc, but first cold boot always just boot to a black screen on my monitor.

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 01:57 PM PST

After this, if I shut off the pc and then turn it on again for a second time it boots up fine. And then if I turn it off for a while then come back hours later it again boots to black the first time, then works perfectly the second. Would someone help me figure out the issue? I looked on google and theres a few results but I'm pretty confused reading it.

My parts MB: Msi B450 Tomahawk max Cpu: Ryzen 5 3600X Gpu: Gigabyte 2070 Windforce x2 8G Ram: 4x 8GB Gskill trident z neo Power supply: Seasonic Focus+ Gold 850W Storage: 500Gb ssd & 2Tb Hard drive

GPU Cooling help?!?

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 03:26 PM PST

My gpu (gigabyte GeForce 2070 super wind force OC) has three fans. On load, they run at ~800-1800 RPM and my gpu @ 65-80°C. Looking at the image, (this image), would adding a third case fan to the front of my cooler master nr600 case be beneficial in any way? The three fans at 1000+ RPM makes quite the bit of noise and it bothers me.

Looking to make my ATX computer as travel sized in a cost effective manner. Any recommendations?

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 01:49 PM PST

I go to college now so it's not feasible to lug a full size computer to and from school on a bus. I want to downsize it small enough so I can keep it on a seat next to me (it would break immediately if I threw it in cargo). I know Micro ITX would be ideal, but I don't want to have to buy a new PSU, GPU, Mobo. Are there any other form factors that would let me keep most of my current parts, or are there any compact ATX cases you could recommend?
