What size SSD do I need for a dedicated OS SSD? Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:31 AM PST I'm buying a small but adequate SSD for just the OS. Zorin OS lite only requires 2GB. Would a 500GB drive be overkill? Would 100 GB be sufficient? [link] [comments] |

Changing the functionality of the Fullscreen button? Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:25 AM PST Hello, I was wondering if there was any way to modify the functionality of the fullscreen button because as currently when I fullscreen it overlaps my taskbar (polybar). Any additional information can be commented if it's needed. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
lubuntu 19.10 auto start program as root on boot Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:53 PM PST Hi, I'm using lubuntu and I've got everything setup except that I need an application (Eddie-ui which is a VPN application) to start on boot as root. I'm using lubuntu 19.10 and I can't see an easy way to start an application as root on each boot up. I've googled for a few hours but a lot of the solutions don't work for this version. Any help would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Migrate Ubuntu PC to another PC with Mint already installed... possible? Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:51 PM PST I would like to move my Ubuntu 18.04 setup to a PC running Mint 19.02, keeping my accounts, programs and configurations intact. I'm also running the Cinnamon DE in Ubuntu. I have it backed up with Aptik and Timeshift. Is this possible? What problems should I expect? Obviously I'm trying to save myself a lot of time reinstalling and customizing everything from scratch, but I fear I might be kidding myself that it could be this easy. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:39 AM PST I'm looking at installing Linux on my laptop and am wondering if I was to create a bootable Windows 10 installation USB then I'd be able to reinstall Windows if I wanted to change back. I have tried dual booting them but I couldn't install Linux in UEFI mode and therefore had to go into the boot menu every time I wanted to load Linux. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:13 AM PST I want to implement this on a cyclic basis, such that at the end of every day, say at 3:00 AM, a report should be generated which contains all commands executed across the server from the previous day's 3:01 AM till today's 3:00 AM. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:59 AM PST My laptop: Asus FX Series (Gaming) FX705GM-EW175T 17.3in i5 As the title says, I'm currently in Elementary OS, and I want to install Ubuntu, but Secure Boot isn't letting the installer do its job, and it's greyed out in UEFI/BIOS. I did manage to disable Secure Boot for a split-second, but I don't know how -- I don't think it should've allowed me to. I searched online for "disable Secure Boot linux" to no avail. There are only guides for Windows, and I am an utter beginner at this stuff. Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
No boot option for installed linux Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:01 AM PST I recently tried installing ubuntu as dual boot on my windows 10 machine by using an usb stick. I installed it and everythings fine. But when i remove the usb stick, the laptop directly boots up windows, no matter what i set the boot order to. I tried the same by installing Pop!_OS(19.10) after deleting ubuntu, but same issue here. Im not very familiar with boots and uefis and stuff so a detailed help would be very helpful! Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

Unable to print to file. (Debian 10.2) Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:38 AM PST I have a program that prints output to a selected file. When I setup a desktop file for it, it stops working, only the subroutine that prints to file, every other part works. Additionally executing as ./binary works flawlessly as well. Is there a line/ command I am missing? [link] [comments] |
What is this grub thing, and how screwed am I? Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:38 PM PST Yep, it's me again, with fresh problems. While attempting to install bootable Ubuntu on partition 1 of my flash drive, I made an error. I followed the instructions from this site but the moment I hit enter I noticed a typo, I set the destination to /dev/sdb1 instead of the intended /dev/sdc1. I don't have a /dev/sdb, so imagine my surprise when it started writing to it. This was shortly followed by some flavor of crash I haven't seen before. Black screen with small green and white text. In my panic, I rebooted, rather than documented. Bad me. Now on boot, I just get
And to think, the whole point in the first place was that I was trying to set myself up to recover from such a situation. [link] [comments] |
Rock solid distro for programming and graphic design! Posted: 16 Dec 2019 12:33 AM PST Hi guys! I am a programmer and a graphic designer. I have been working on windows since the first day I used a computer and now ,after so many years, I've decided to switch to linux. Can you please suggest a really good and stable distro for programming and graphic design? Thanks!!!! [link] [comments] |
Non-suite, offline alternatives to ms office Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:31 AM PST I am currently looking for an alternative to ms office, it's probably the only thing I miss about windows after using Linux for more than a year now. I was wondering, is it possible to build a simple "suite" of office programs using standalone apps? I only need to replace word, excel and PowerPoint. I tried replacing word by using nvim/sublime, but sometimes I just want this clean, simple GUI paired with the ability to see the document as it's changing, without the need to render or otherwise convert it (like from md to pdf) I am still yet to find a decent alternative to excel and PowerPoint. Unfortunately, I can't use internet based options right now. I also tried libreOffice - it's ok, but it loads painfully slow and is laggy in general [link] [comments] |
What are the default fonts for Firefox on Linux? Or the most common setups? Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:33 AM PST My Firefox seems to follow my system fontconfig so I'm not sure what the defaults typically are for Linux users. Downloaded Linux Mint, WiFi Won't Work Posted: 16 Dec 2019 12:23 AM PST Hello, I am very new to linux in general and just installed linux mint. My wifi won't show up, and when I went to drive manager, it said it could not continue as there was no network connection. I do not have access to ethernet but I do have wifi working on windows (I also have a usb if that helps). What can I do to get my wifi working? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:52 AM PST What I was using as reference: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Installation So I ran the following commands To download the xorg-server and the xorg-apps packages I confirmed this with which gave me an output of /usr/lib/xorg and /usr/include/xorg although using the arguments "xorg-server" and "xorg-apps" gave no output, so Im not sure if that is an issue. Reading the wiki a bit more, I wanted to at least run the X server and get the drivers thing worked out before I started messing with DEs and WMs. So I ran: and I get a "command not found" error Just from random searching I saw that there was a different way to start X however this also gave me a "command not found" error. I cant really precede with what I want to do until I figure this out, so Im hoping someone here will. Here are pictures of what I have done: [link] [comments] |
Hey, I'm having trouble installing Elementary OS. Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:33 AM PST My laptop: Asus FX Series (Gaming) FX705GM-EW175T 17.3in i5 I have a bootable USB (in DD mode). The USB actually boots into the installer, but the installer tells me that my system only has 8GB of memory, and that it can't proceed. The USB has 8GB of memory. I think the issue is that it can't see my 512GB SSD? But I'm not sure why. I have Windows 10 installed by default. Anyone? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
