Upgrade to an SSD or a better RAM?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:53 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I want to upgrade my laptop to extend it's life and performance a bit. Current specs:

    Lenovo G5070 I3 4010U AMD Radeon HD 8500M (formerly R5 M230) 4GB 800mhz RAM 1TB HDD

I want to know which will improve the performance more. An SSD upgrade or a RAM upgrade to 8GB dual channel 1600mhz (I think my laptop supports up to 16GB 1600mhz correct me if I'm wrong).

Edit: Forgot to write that my main point is improving gaming performance. Btw any other suggestion to help improve gaming performance other than what I asked is appreciated.

    Video editing laptop... (buying advice)

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:20 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** I'd like to spend no more than $1,400 USD, I'm in the US

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best Specs for the money, fo sho. I'm looking for effectiveness boi

**How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not very, I'd rather it not be thin in the hopes of better performance

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I'd rather not do Linux, I'm currently using Linux and it's kicking my ass :,(

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Pshh nah

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** haven't decided on what software to run, I'd say I'll be running the "advanced hobby-est" program. Not supah professional, not Powerpoint, juuuuuuust right

I'm looking for a laptop that will be able to tackle video editing and music editing (those are the heavy hitters as far as programs go). I'm only slightly against buying a Mac as they're crazy expensive; I'd like a SSD, high RAM, and local ports as opposed to buying a hub to plug everything into. I'm sure I'm asking for a unicorn but if it's out there, I'd love to look into it. Durability/longevity is super key I'm thinking. Thank you for the help!!

A gaming laptop with touchscreen and stylus?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:38 PM PST

My current setup is a gaming laptop with an external drawing tablet and recently its been a pain to lug around and setup at my different classes and often there's not enough desk space for both, so I want to upgrade. I have been looking everywhere but it seems like my dream laptop does not exist. I basically want a high-refresh-rate ips panel (probably 144hz) that has decent clour accuracy for productivity, minimum for a gtx 1650 for CAD and gaming and a touch screen and real stylus support for note-taking. I know it would not come cheap but I am wondering if such a laptop even exists.

    Hello everyone

Could i get you guys opinion on something?

My school offers a Lenovo Thinkpad T590 and Lenovo Thinkpad T495 each for a price of 835 euros

Now... Is this a good price/buy for this laptop or are there better options for this price?

I am looking for a new laptop for school because my previous one broke...

I have a budget up to 1100 euros

I like the look of a macbook but in my budget there is only the macbook air... When i looked a bit further i found the Microsoft surface laptop 2 which looks a lot like a macbook and has about the same specs as the macbook air and only costs 800 euros...

What is your guys opinions? Go for the one my school offers? Or are there better options in my price range? Keep in mind I like the looks of the macbook and surface laptops.

    Thanks in advance

Optane SSD vs XPG SX8100 as boot drive

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:21 AM PST

Just unboxed my new Omen 17t. I've very pleased with everything so far. It ordered it with the base 512GB Intel SSD+32GB Optane all-in-one module. I bought a 2TB XPG SX8100 at the same time. My Macrum clone didn't work, so I can use a recovery drive while it's fresh, but my question to the community is:

Would you just use the Optane drive as boot and use the 2TB as a D:\ data/program drive? This is how my existing MSI is set up but it makes housekeeping more complicated. Which do you think would be the better performing OS drive?

I'm pretty sure if I make the Intel the secondary drive, I can't use the Optane module to accelerate the XPG, from what I've read on Intel's website.

Likelihood of high refresh rate screens on 13" laptops

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:48 AM PST

Hey guys, now that the Pixel 4 and OnePlus 7T (and next year the Galaxy S11) have 90Hz screens, do you think we'll soon start seeing them on the high end 13" machines like the XPS, Spectre and X1 Carbon? After using the iPad Pro, standard screens just seem laggy and gaming laptops don't quite fit my needs.

    Switching parts between brands?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 08:41 AM PST

My old gaming laptop is an HP Omen 15-ax243dx. 4gb Nvida graphics. Pci wifi card hardware. It picked up my wifi from about 40-45 feet away and could play online (league of legends, MHW) with low latency of ~30-50ms. It was becoming outdated in today's gaming standards so I bought a new Asus Zephyrus M GU502GW-AH76. Nvidia 8gb 2070. Huge upgrade, first NEW computer purchase I've ever made ($1700). It however cannot connect to my access point like my Omen did without dropping huge packets. Latency ~80-180ms. Frequent disconnects. My Question is, if the Asus uses a PCI wifi adapter card, could trading the omens card into the Zephyrus help my situation? Or is the issue elsewhere in these kinds of situations. I'm okay with voiding the warranty as I plan to keep it for 6+years, opening it would also give me a chance to go from 16gb ram to 32gb maxed out. (I've messed with the roaming and power saving settings in Devmanager, throughput booster on, nothing helps. Drivers are up to date.)

If I can switch the cards to have Omen-like connectivity, then I'd do that. I currently cannot move my access point. May return Asus and look for other options that have stronger connectivity

    Laptop Comparison Help Needed

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 08:05 AM PST

Looking for a machine that will do well with virtualization, especially virtualized Networking Labs.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:52 AM PST

I have a desktop at home with an 8700k and 32GB of RAM, so I'm not looking for something to use at home, but something portable. My current laptop is a Zenbook UX330UA with a 7200U and 8GB of RAM. I feel like this will run alright for lighter virtualized topologies, but wanting something a bit beefier, especially on the RAM side.

I've been looking at Dell XPS 15's, especially with the 1080p panel, 9750H, and 32GB RAM specline, but I'm reading a lot about overheating issues and battery concerns. Gaming isn't huge, but I at least want a GTX 1650 or better GPU for lighter stuff when I want to play on the go. I do not do any music/video production work, so I also don't care about that. Mostly something I can take places to study/work away from home and has pretty good to great battery life. My Zenbook was a lifesaver in college in that regard.

Preferred OS is Linux; doesn't need to come with it, but I would love it play nice with it.

    Thanks guys.

    Is this normal?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:41 AM PST

Exited safe mode by restarting and after I entered my password the desktop appeared for a second then went to black for around 2-3 seconds then went back to normal. Is this normal behavior? I've never experienced it before in previous times of the exact same circumstances.

Need a laptop with RTX 2080 non Max Q

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:45 AM PST

I know it's overkill but I'm waiting another year before reapec'ing my old desktop and want a full on desktop replacement preferably in a 16 inch or smaller form factor.

I've tried the MSI GE65 Raider with the 9750H and RTX 2070 but was wanting a bit more. Tried out the 17 in Y740 with the Max Q RTX 2080 and was not impressed.

The only laptop in the mentioned size range with a full fledged RTX 2080 (non Max Q) is the GE 63 Raider. I even considered the new Alienware laptops but they are all max Q gpus and the ram is soldered in place and have no user upgradable features.

Any suggestions? Also, seen any with the i9 9880h CPU paired with it?

    Thanks!

Yet another 2 in 1 question

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 02:53 AM PST

I know you guys are probably so tired of answering people's recommendation questions, but even after searching and reading through this sub I'm so lost when it comes to the power and capabilities of computers.

I'm looking to buy a computer for my partner, who basically only uses her current piece of junk to play the Sims 4, edit photography, and basic browsing.

She's been talking about wanting a tablet, but she also really needs to replace her old Lenovo Ideapad as it's starting to go downhill quickly. (5ish years old, heavy irresponsible use)

These are the ones I've got so far:

    Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 15.6" Intel Core i5 8GB RAM Lenovo Yoga 730 2-in-1 15.6" Intel Core i5 12GB RAM Lenovo Yoga C740 2-in-1 15.6" Intel Core i5 12GB RAM

All 3 are around 650-700 bucks which is at the top end of my budget but I'm comfortable paying that price if that's what it takes to get a 2-in-1 that is capable of light gaming (Sims 4), running Lightroom, and basic browsing.

    Help with finding a laptop?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:18 PM PST

Hi, i am looking for a small, lightweight laptop to keep (and hopefully edit when i learn more about it) my photos on that i have taken with my DSLR Camera.

I will also take it with me when i got on trips which is why i'd like a small and lightweight laptop.

I was looking for a cheap one but to view my photos properly i'm assuming i will need a screen with a good resolution so that could bump the price up.

    Does anything have any suggestions?

    Thanks

Recommended laptops for EXP GDC Beast eGPU setup.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:45 AM PST

Right know I don't have a desktop or a laptop. I have a EXP GDC Beast, PSU and GTX 760 lying around. I had a ThinkPad T430 and used this setup with it when I still had it. I am not too familiar with similar laptops made by other companies and was wondering if theres other good options before I get another T430. Preferably similar price range.
