    Understanding stuff

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 03:26 AM PST

Just some general questions. I've been using Linux for some specific projects and I've gotten through them worth help, but I still don't know a lot of stuff.

What is root? People are always referring to it and I just don't get it. The way the filing system seems to work is confusing to me. When I set up my raspberry pis the whole installation component really confused me. Directions often mentioned root and the screen would say often "you are root." Can someone explain this to me like I'm a five year old?

What are the most important command lines I should know ? Where do I go to learn this stuff (aside from here)?

Everything I have works (three pis, a laptop with lubuntu). Very happy with these. But I want to know more and since I'm a big picture guy any details would be super helpful. I guess I wanna break out of being a noob.....?

Edit 12/18/2019 10:10: I'm flagging this resolved, but feel free to keep commenting. Everyone has been super helpful. I really appreciate it. Great sub.

What happens to system in case of power outages.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:26 AM PST

Hello everyone, I use an old dell laptop. Its batteries cant hold charge even for 2 mins. So I have removed the batteries and decided to run system directly from AC adapter power source. I was wondering what happens in case of power outages. I know in case of windows I'll have to select "start windows normally" and I can use my system with some unsaved data loss. Is it the same with linux also? I use ubuntu or sometimes elementary os installed on a 32 GB usb drive, and I'm scared if it may break my system or usb in case of sudden power outages. Any suggestion will be helpful. Thanks in advance

How to make sudo not ask for password if I just logged in?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:48 AM PST

Sudo has a timer that starts when you first enter a password. If you use sudo while the timer is running, you won't need to enter password again, because you just entered it a minute ago.

When I log on to my machine I sometimes have to manually run a special script using sudo. Can I make sudo run this timer when I login so I don't have to enter my (very long) password twice?

    GreenWithEnvy fan curve not working

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:35 PM PST

Hello. On Windows I use MSI Afterburner to set my custom fan curve while I'm gaming. I was looking for an alternative to it on Linux and found GWE, installed it with the from the Flatpak and tried setting up a fan curve. It doesn't work and I tried setting the fan to 100% at all times just to make sure it doesn't work, It doesn't change the fan speed at all. Also, hen I try to change the fan speed from the Nvidia X Settings it works and I can blast my fan up to 100%. Coolbits are set to 12. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.

    OS: Ubuntu 19.04

    GPU: GT 630 (OEM)

    GWE version: 0.13.0

When installing MX linux, will I need to wipe/partition the hard drive first?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:15 PM PST

I have an HP laptop that I want to run MX linux on, but I'm not quite sure of the install procedure. I'm fairly sure I need to run legacy boot before running, but I'm more concerned about whether or not I'll need to wipe and partition the hard drive before installing it. Will MX linux allow me to select new partitions from the install screen?

Linux for Plex and some general use

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:48 AM PST

I've been reading around about different Linux distros and can't decide what would be best for my needs. I did the Linux distro quiz but that didn't ask all the questions I needed to answer. I want to use it on my laptop for mainly a Plex server, with some general use such as Google drive and its apps. My laptop runs fairly slow on Windows which is why I am looking into Linux. I read in a few places it is good at utilising old hardware. My laptop isn't that old but it just doesn't seem to run well.

I have most of the Plex files ready on the laptop but will transfer them to an external drive so I can fully wipe the drive for a fresh Linux installation. I presume the installation via USB would be fairly simple on any distro and have installed Ubuntu before today on another laptop but didn't really use it.

My laptop specs are: Intel i5-4288U 2.6GHz dual core 8GB RAM Intel Iris graphics 5100 (HP)

If you need any more info please ask. Thanks.

Is there a software center/app store/GUI Package manager for CentOS+KDE?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:08 AM PST

I finished installing CentOS 8 (1905) with KDE. Is there a GUI package manager that I can use? Also what are some repos I can use to install software for CentOS 8, mainly audio video related. I have a full list if needed.

Request: Please don't ask me why I'm using CentOS and suggest me to use Ubuntu. I need to use CentOS and I dont have a choice.

    Installation help

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:03 AM PST

    Hey,

I have been using windows all my life i wanted to change it as it has became unbearable to use lately,so i have been trying to dual boot linux for past week with no success please assist me,i tried 2 distros with following process.NOTE I DO USE A EFI SYSTEM

    1) POP OS latest

I strink my C drive and made space, created 3 partiton one for boot, swap and root

The problem is when i create a normal boot partition of 512mb (/boot) is failing each time showing that i have a hardware error.I cannot create a normal boot partition as /efi/boot partition, the build is 200 mb efi partition also cannot be choosed as /efi/boot it can be choosen as /boot ONLY.(POPOS says to choose a /efi/boot partiton but there is no way for such an option)

There is a instruction in POPOS installation page to there is a instruction that read "for dual boot, choose current efi partiton of windows and select it as boot for POPOS without formating",but the problem is i cannot choose that without formatting and can only choose it as /boot and not /efi/boot which is required ,the format option is already selected and cannot be deselected, hence i dont want to mess up my windows boot efi partition without help.

    2) ZORIN OS latest

zorin can automatically create dual boot as an option but again it cannot detect windows as a OS,it says "no current OS detected, clean install Zorin" even though i have windows 10 on that harddrive.

If i choose custom install partition as root,Zorin installation completes and says to me to reboot, but it reboots into Windows,no matter what i do (going into boot menu, disabling fastboot, hitting esc, space ),it automatically boots to windows with no trace of zorin anywhere.

Now i have given up on dual booting and want to install clean, but i am worried as i Have EFI system with windows recovery partition and all and zorin can not even detecting my windows,if it fails during clean install i will be in trouble.

    NOTE:USING LENOVO IDEAPAD 330S 2018 4GB RAM,I3 8TH GEN INTEL

FAST BOOT DISABLED,LEGACY MODE ON BOOTLOADER MENU,NO SSD ONLY 1TB harddrive

    DISK PARTITIONS ATTACHED

    Any help appreciated.

    Cannot backup with Deja Dup

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:59 AM PST

    Manjaro KDE.

I'm getting this error when I try a backup with dejadup:

"Backup Failed. Samba network locations must include both a hostname and a share name."

I only have three options to choose storage location for backup:Google DriveLocal folderNetwork server

I'm backing up to a folder on my Synology NAS, so I picked Network Server.

Network location: smb://admin@192.168.1.214/Folder: Set to the folder I want the backup stored on which is /Backup/

I did some searching online but I can't find this error in any other threads, so I'm having difficulty. I remember using DejaDup in the past and I had more options for storage location than is showing up now. Any help appreciated.

I am able to pull up this folder in Dolphin without issue. Shouldn't I have to put in a username and password for the network folder? I remember needing to do that with DejaDup in the past but that doesn't show up.

My BIOS doesn’t allow me to change my SSD from RAID to AHCI

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:58 AM PST

After a few weeks, distro after distro, they all won't detect my NVMe SSD and one thing I saw was changing my SATA from RAID to AHCI.

My BIOS doesn't even have anything remote to relating to the SSD, is there any way I can change this inside of windows? Or inside live Linux? Or is there any distros that support RAID?

    thank you

As the title says, I'll be doing a clean install over the next few days. I'd like to back up my browser and key ring info so I don't have to log back in to every friggin web service I subscribe to. I've done it before, I just can't remember how.

    Any thoughts?

    Hashing commands on text

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 03:12 AM PST

Hashing commands like sha256sum and md5sum work both on binary files and strings of text, but since the hash functions inherently operate on bits, I'm unsure how the *sum commands turn text strings into usable ones and zeros. Does it just use ASCII?

How to prevent Ubuntu (Pop_Os) from updating drivers? (Downgraded to Nvidia 430, looking for suggestions)

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:07 AM PST

    Dear Linux Users,

An inexperienced user, I would like to ask for your advice how to software configuration from potential future breaking on my laptop. I had to downgrade Nvidia drivers to 430 because of some Docker hardware-acceleration requirements.

I followed these steps, (some of which I don't understand):

First I removed all Nvidia 440 packages from the system (these commands were not listed here).

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa distribution=$(. /etc/os-release;echo $ID$VERSION_ID) curl -s -L https://nvidia.github.io/nvidia-docker/gpgkey | sudo apt-key add - curl -s -L https://nvidia.github.io/nvidia-docker/$distribution/nvidia-docker.list | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nvidia-docker.list sudo apt-get update

Then I created file: /etc/apt/preferences.d/nvidia-docker-pin-1002 with content:

    Package: * Pin: origin nvidia.github.io Pin-Priority: 1002

And another file /etc/apt/preferences.d/nvidia-ppa-pin-1002 with content:

    Package: * Pin: release o=LP-PPA-graphics-drivers Pin-Priority: 1002

    Then installed driver:

    sudo apt install nvidia-driver-430

Restarted machine and did the final steps:

sudo apt install nvidia-container-toolkit systemctl restart docker

The above steps are from as a solution for one nvidia-docker repository issue.

    The author mentioned there:

Once this is fixed in Pop! OS you can remove the repo and PPA (don't forget to remove the pinning).

I would like to ask you:

    • What exactly should I do to avoid any further, potentially unwanted Nvidia graphics updates (and others) which could break my setup? What are the other potential failure points when I upgrade something?
    • What did the files placed in the preferences.d directory change and do? Why I should remove them now, like the author suggested?
    • Where could I learn effectively how to deal with such problems in the future? Which book about Ubuntu covers that nicely?

I would appreciate your support and understanding (I am a basic user building understanding about linux).

Thank you for your time devoted to this matter.

    Regards, Jakub

PS. This topic is cross-posted in the Pop Os subreddit.

After replacing most components, does the OS need to be reinstalled?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:50 PM PST

Hey everyone, I'm going to build a new PC pretty soon. One of the components is an AMD RX 5500 XT 4GB, which requires the current mainline kernel (5.5) to work. I'm currently on 5.4 on Manjaro, and can install the mainline kernel through the AUR.

After installing the new kernel, and newer mesa to accommodate the 5500 XT, can I just swap OS drive from my old build into the new one?

If not, are there any not-too-difficult distros which are already using kernel 5.5? Thanks.
