Thinking of buying a low cost Chromebook just for Linux. Anyone else do this? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:26 AM PST I noticed that Best Buy was selling Acer 15" Chromebooks for around $150. The reason why they were $150 was because of the sticker on the box saying they will no longer receive updates after 2020. Apparently they had been sitting in a stock room for a couple of years. Anyway, thinking of picking one up and just turning it into a Linux machine. Anyone else pick up a Chromebook specifically for Linux? [link] [comments] |

Noob here. Are questions related to Windows Subsystem for Linux allowed on this sub? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:38 AM PST Title says all. Tried getting into the world of Linux but it just didn't work, and besides, I haven't had any real issues windows. That being said I do still want to learn the ways of Linux. More specifically the terminal. My father is quite the CS guru and he has been teaching me how to use the Unix terminal ever since I introduced him the WSL. So, if I have any questions about Linux or have any problems, am I allowed to ask them here without getting the "Microsoft hate". Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Command-line tool to see what files CAN be downloaded from a URL? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:46 PM PST I know commands like wget let you download files from a page, but is there a command that lets you see what files you can download in the first place? [link] [comments] |
Unable to install, you do not have permission? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 06:40 AM PST Trying to install software from the "software store" such as Dropbox. I get a popup that says I do not have permission. How can I change this so I have permission. Running Ubuntu 18 with xfce environment. [link] [comments] |
rogue sync emblems after uninstalling overgrive Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:35 PM PST i tried overgrive (client for managing google drive), synced a folder but have uninstalled. after uninstalling, the folder i'd synced still shows the icon emblem for syncing/synced on all the files and folders (in both nautilus and nemo). is this info cached somewhere? i don't think it's specific to overgrive, but assume there's a config/cache file somewhere that tells nautilus/nemo etc which icons to add the emblem to. any help much appreciated. UEFI Boot differences between Linux Distros Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:30 AM PST I have this dumb question but I could not find an answer by myself, so here it goes: why is it that, when installing some distros like Manjaro, PopOS or Solus, after rebooting, the distro boots up no problem. But when installing most other distros like Fedora, Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, etc. my laptop comes up with "No Bootable Device" and does not boot into Linux until I go into the BIOS/UEFI settings, set a password and select a "shimx64.efi" file as "trusted EFI" ?? Its not that "Secure Boot" needs to be enabled/disabled. That does not make a difference as I checked. Its not a Legacy vs UEFI issue either, since those mentioned distros boot into UEFI with Secure Boot enabled without any manual intervention necessary. Its not that Manjaro/PopOS/Solus create an "ESP (EFI system partition)" and the others dont, because the others do. I just have to manually go into that partition, find and select the shimx64.efi as trusted. Its not that the distros that work, do this manuall process automatically as far as I can tell either, because there are no "Trusted EFI Files" listed in the Boot Order. There is not even the Linux Distro listed in the Boot Order, its just the Harddrive my OS is installed on. Some of these distros even use the same Calamares Installer (perhaps their own version of it but still) as far as I'm aware. Can someone explain to me whats going on? Thanks! Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:52 AM PST Hi all! Currently trying to get Lubuntu 19.10 installed from an external hard drive that I put the ISO on using Rufus, on an ASUS ZenBook 13. No matter which partitioning option I choose or which guides I follow, I'm always given the following Python error, effectively aborting the installation process. Any help solving… whatever this is would be greatly appreciated! Similar help posts I've encountered around the web usually deal with the OS not booting in UEFI mode or there being writing faults in the image. However, I've checked both (with a bash command and selecting the "Check disk" option before startup, respectively), and the problem doesn't seem to lie there! Thank you in advance. Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:41 AM PST Hello, So I'm trying to follow this guide (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Logitech_MX_Master) to set-up my MX Master 2S on Arch Linux with Xbindkeys. However, I'm struggling a bit with some stuff. I have manged to change so if I hold ALT and use the scroll wheel I can raise and lower the volume. However, I have not been able to assign the thumb button to the command shown below, which should open a preview of all my active windows. I also haven't figured out how to assign a multiple keys to a command. E.G. CTRL+ALT+LEFT to be on b:8. Is this possible? I would love some help. [link] [comments] |
NFS fileserver, can't read files Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:23 AM PST Hello, I am trying to share hardrives in my server (old desktop with ubuntu 18.04) over the network to my manjaro desktop. I was able to set up the /etc/exports on the host and fstab on the client. But I can only see top level directories of the path I shared. and here's what my fstab looks like: my-ip-addr:/home /mnt/server nfs defaults,users,timeo=900,retrans=5,_netdev 0 0 I've spent a lot of time reading nfs guides and cannot figure out why I can't read anything in the directory. It looks like the folders are owned by my servers root user though. [link] [comments] |
Linux server OS for desktop use? Is it recommended? Or not? Latte dock blurry icons (couldn't resolve with official fix) Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:07 AM PST I'm using Latte dock on Debian 10.2 and ran into issue where some of my icons are blurry but others are HQ (not because of low quality icon pack the icon pack is good). I've asked a couple of days ago about this and people sent me to this link : Which however didn't resolve the issue for any of the programs I have. I've also discovered that the icons are blurry but when I launch the actually program the icon will change to the HQ one which I totally cannot understand why. Can anyone please somehow provide help with this I'm literally fixing this for the last 4 DAYS and cannot ignore it it' just too obvious and in the bottom of the desktop all the time. I've tried reinstalling the entire dock with purging and autoremoving it. I've tried setting exact path to the HQ icon via the program's .desktop file. I've tried using VMClasses with xprop to set the "name" and stuff all of the above didn't fix the issue. [link] [comments] |

Raspbian - Cannot delete files from mounted Ext HD Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:42 AM PST I have an issue where when I try to delete (move to trash) any file in my Ext HD it says "Unable to find or create trash directory". I have been wading through the internet for solutions to this and have tried many with no success (adding .trash-1000 to the mount point, making sure $User has ownership of the trash, editing my fstab to include ntfs-3g instead of just ntfs) also I'm pretty sure it's not an access issue as my radarr/sonarr setup seems to be able to do its thing just fine and I can also rename files and in worst case scenario I can cut and paste anything I am trying to delete from the Ext HD to my desktop and can delete it from there... I'm very new to linux (I'm sure you can tell) so any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
[Manjaro/Pop OS] Live USB Boot failure Posted: 29 Dec 2019 06:46 AM PST So I am trying to replace the Manjaro Distro running on my laptop with the Pop OS that has built in NVIDIA drivers. I flashed the Pop OS image correctly because I am able to boot it from my windows 10 computer. But as soon as I try and boot it from my Asus Q427F laptop, I get a black screen with a solid white '_'. In order to even get to that point I have to go to Boot Override. The weird thing is, is that another flash drive I have with the manjaro ISO on it that i used to install Manjaro on my Asus boots no problem. I flashed all the ISOs using Rufus and I have also tried flashing Pop OS onto a Sandisk Ultra 64GB and it still did not work. Please Help! :) Computer Specs:OS: Manjaro Linux x86_64 Host: ZenBook UX463FL 1.0 Kernel 5.4.2-1-MANJARO CPU: Intel i7:10510U (8) @ 4.9GHZ GPU NVIDIA GeForce MX250 GPU Intel Device 9b41 Flash Drive Specs:ONN USB 2.0 16GB w/ Pop OS Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 64GB w/ Pop OS PNY USB 2.0 16GB w/ Manjaro [link] [comments] |
Should I get Linux for my first "gaming" build? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:05 AM PST Hello, Recently I got a new machine to replace my old Athlon PC, It's a Ryzen 3 3200G APU with the onboard graphics and 16GB of RAM (I will bump the VRAM to 2GB), I want to get reasonable performance. I'm afraid because of using Windows it might get the system unstable after a while, so I thought installing Linux Mint on the system it might be a good idea; I only play TF2, CS:GO and Minecraft on my computer right now and they all run natively on Linux but I don't know about the drivers, I read that 3200G has a issue with the drivers but it might be outdated. Is this a good idea or I should choose another distro? Thank you a lot! [link] [comments] |

How to mount a luks-container as a user program so that the folder belongs to that user? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:59 AM PST Hey /r/linux4noobs, how can I mount a luks-container from a Python-Script so that it is read- and writable by the current user. Which distributions of Linux are backed by a corporation? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 06:00 AM PST I am looking for Linux for home desktop use and I want to try continuing on with Linux but I want my standards to be higher now, so I am looking a distribution that is backed by a corporation. So far I know Ubuntu is, what other Linux distributions have the monetary backing of a corporation? I prefer choosing a distro that has corporate backing, I hope that will result in better hardware support, for example; after many years it is still hit or miss (for example, scrolling still doesn't work properly on my 2014 MacBook Pro 15" while running a Parallels virtual machine with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I need to go with a bigger company that has the resources to make a working problem-free Linux distro. Not to mention smaller community driven Linux distro tend to fail for whatever reason (Like when the head programmer leaves) and then the OS has to be forked or be dissolved. I am making the assumption that any distro that is will to pay their programmers a steady paycheck will put out a better product (or risk losing money or going bankrupt). A corporate backed Linux distro will more likely be around in 5 - 10+ years. [link] [comments] |
