A word of warning for laptop users this christmas Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:09 AM PST So I don't have the most expensive laptop or the newest laptop. I don't have ssds or a 1080p screen. I don't have a dedicated gpu or a fast CPU but I'm ok with that. I bought my laptop to browse the web, get college work done and play a bit of LoL. On ultra low settings my machine can bust out a whopping 30fps at 720p in league of legends. That's all I need to carry games. The problem began this winter. My game would suddenly crash in the middle of a match. This was never a problem before but it started to happen in every game. So I updated my drivers, updated windows and hoped for the best. No luck. If my game didn't crash it would drop to 0fps and return to normal. "It's almost as if my latop is thermal throttling" I thought. What a ridiculous thought! My laptop never thermal throttled before. Besides it's winter. Why would thermals suddenly be an issue. Feeling hungry, I reached for the chocolate bar on my desk and noticed that it was completely melted. It was heated by the radiator underneath my desk. I turned off my radiator, put on a jacket and went back to enjoying a smooth 30fps 720p gaming experience. This Christmas don't make the mistake I did. Turn of your heating. Put out the relaxing fireplace fire and open all your windows. [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:33 AM PST Hi there, I am going into my 3rd year and I was wondering what was better as a solution for general note taking, and then more heavy workloads within university. I am studying computer science with AI so work that i do within uni will be very cpu intensive, and the price of laptops gets high very fast when looking at better cpus. Now I have a pretty decent pc atm (3700x, 1070), and I was wondering what would be a better option, spending £2000 + on a high end laptop, or maybe spending £1000 on a decent lightweight laptop that can easy be transported, and use remote access in order to utilise the processing power of my pc. I can even use that extra £1000 to look at a better cpu and gpu. I have never used remote access like that, so I'm not all that sure how well it works. Thanks, [link] [comments]
Integrated GPU Underperforming Among Other Things Posted: 10 Dec 2019 12:18 PM PST OS: Windows 10 1903 CPU: i7-1065G7 GPU: Intel Iris Plus G7 (64 eu) w/ 8GB shared memory 16GB RAM 1TB SSD This is my first time posting here, so here goes nothing... I recently bought a new laptop (Spectre x360 13.3"), and decided to try some games on it since I finally had a computer that could do some light gaming. Knowing Intel GPU's aren't the best, I went down the rabbit hole of comparisons and benchmarking. I watched a few performance tests, and tried the games that ran well. This was when I realized that my laptop would run everything at 20-30 FPS slower than the testers on YouTube. I benchmarked my computer and every site is telling me the GPU is performing way below expectations (and that Windows is throttling my CPU). I did a bit of research on my own and was advised to set my power mode to "High/Ultimate Performance", which made sense to me. But when I opened up the settings the default options were missing, and I was stuck on "Balanced". I tried solutions found online and nothing worked. I'm not too concerned about this since Balanced mode doesn't seem to limit performance when it's needed (but this info might be helpful idk). Come today and I opened up task manager while playing CSGO (60 fps with slight buffers) and found that my GPU was using no more shared VRAM than when I'm reading emails, but the 3D section was hovering around 90%. I don't understand why it won't use more shared memory to run things better, especially since nothing I do ever uses more than 6 GB RAM. Any tips to bring my GPU's performance to at least average? Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:25 AM PST I'm looking for a very portable laptop that is well-built, boasts a modest amount of processing power for light gaming (like LoL), has a long battery life, and runs quietly. I plan on using it while out-and-about, and I don't want a gaming laptop with lights and loud fan noises distracting the people around me. I've been eyeing the dell xps13 and xps15 because I'm a fan of the build quality. Unfortunately, the xps13 has no discrete graphics card and the xps15 doesn't have the 10th gen U-processors yet. I want a small discrete GPU like the MX150 for light gaming, and the 10th gen i5 4-core U-processor for lower voltage and better thermals so it will run more quietly. $1500 budget. Thoughts or suggestions would be very appreciated. [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:03 AM PST Hi. I want to buy this laptop, it has a i7-8750h and a GTX1060 6gb. So I have a question.. does anyone know if the 1060 in this laptop is a Max-Q version or a regular one? [link] [comments]
Acer Spin 3 14" vs HP Pavilion x360 Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:44 AM PST I'm trying to decide between Acer Spin 3 and HP Pavillion x360 Both have same i5 8th Gen, 256 SSD, 1080p screen, 2 in 1. Spin 3 doesn't have USB C port and backlit keyboard. Other than that I don't see the difference between the the 2. Spin 3 is $100 cheaper than HP Pavillion. Is there some difference missing? Probably in terms of the brand itself or the build. Would appreciate opinions here :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:38 AM PST I don't know how much ram can this laptop from 2010 take, I plan to install a SSD and windows 10 on it, if possible I would like to use 2*8 16GB DDR3 but I really have no idea how many GB of RAM can this laptop take [link] [comments]
Opinions requested: HP Pavillion Gaming Laptop 15in Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:30 AM PST Details: 8GB RAM AMD Ryzen Processor 64 bit operating system, x64 based processor I got this laptop for a great cyber Monday deal due to needing a laptop. I don't game much but the deal was good and so were the online reviews. I'm a bit irked by the green backlit keys and overall "gaming" look of the laptop. Performance is pretty good and so is start up time...but there are lots of HPs out there with good performance in same range. Would I be better off trading it in for something with less gaming capabilities and more, IDK, basic laptop capabilities? $500-$600 range. Thoughts? Suggestions? I may be an idiot when it comes to computers and the fact I bought a gaming laptop without being a PC gamer is dumb but really don't mind asking dumb questions. A dumb one Thanks y'all [link] [comments]

Cheap/ Budget Laptop recommendations for student (college) Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:42 AM PST Need advice for a Budget laptop below USD 500. Currently, I am eyeing the Acer Aspire 5, Lenovo S145 which comes with i5 processor, 4GB RAM. I only intend to use it for my last semester in university for Microsoft and web browsing, and videos/ movies for long term use. Would love to hear some recommendations [link] [comments]
General discussion of laptop brand quality/reliability Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:31 AM PST Hiya kind folks, On Black Friday, I attempted to upgrade my 2013 Lenovo U410. That laptop was decent at best, class action lawsuit around its faulty wifi receiver notwithstanding. Its screen hinges broke recently, and I reckoned it was time. After reading about HP reliability issues and overheating issues on both the Dell G3 and on the Lenovo L340, I ended up with a stellar deal on an ASUS FX505GT with an Nvidia 1650, 8gb ram, 500gb SSD, and 9th generation i9. One week later, the GPU fan is making an unusual rattle at lower RPM levels. It's drowned out by the fan sound on higher levels. I can also hear a constant whisper/whine from..somewhere. Speakers? Motherboard? A visit to r/ASUS revealed that the company's RMA program is despicable. This is turning me off from dealing with their devices, and I'm planning on returning my laptop. I've read of Dell quality deteriorating, along with the aforementioned HP. ASUS has poor reliability, and MSI is reviewed as having poor customer service/reliability. What can I expect around finding an all around trustworthy brand? Are there exceptions among certain model types/iterations? Located in the US [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 Dec 2019 05:46 AM PST Alright so my friend and I play games online, his parents got a new computer so they gave their old one to my friend and his brother. It played the games we played well, like Garrys mod and terraria. He likes Star Wars do he got a new game called Jedi knight academy, when he launched it the computer cord legit just died. Now his parents kept the computer plugged in all the time so the battery kinda just now does not run the computer plugged in the power cord does. Well when that happened it made the computer slow or something to the point where it can't even run roblox or terraria. My idea is that the computer needs a battery replacement and it does not get enough energy to run properly. Am I correct? [link] [comments]
Best laptop to pair with drawing tablet? Posted: 10 Dec 2019 05:43 AM PST I recebtly bought a new art tablet and I considered getting a new laptop altogether seeing as my old one was complete trash not having enough space to simply run art program downloads, its kind of frustrating when I spend 200$ on a art program and the computer can't even run it. The main reason I need help however is I have know experience buying laptops of my own and a few have peaked my interest. Such as the Inspirion 3000 laptops, or are there better alternatives around the same price range? (; ◎△◎)!? I really have no software knowledge. [link] [comments]
What is the best repairable laptop that I can get? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:43 PM PST At least 32 GB RAM, upgradable to 64.. I don't play video games. I run lots of VMs for work and also edit videos. Looking to get a laptop that I can keep for at least for 5 years. Windows laptop preferably, that I can dual boot with Ubuntu. RAM, hard desk, wi-fi etc should be upgradeable and repairable. That means, no macs. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
