Linux Mint Laptop won't shut down Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:05 AM PST I have just installed Linux Mint on an old windows laptop and runs completely fine, but when I press shut down, it just gets stuck on the loading screen (the one with the logo and dots underneath). The only way I can shut down is by pressing shut down button on the laptop itself (which is quite annoying). I was wondering if there is a fix to this? Thanks. Specs: Laptop: Dell Inspiron N5050 HDD: 500GB TOSHIBA MK6475GS Distro: Linux Mint 19.2 Tina Processor: Intel Core i5-2450M @ 2.5Ghz Dual Core RAM: 4GB When it shuts down, on the loading screen the first 2 dots turn green and then nothing happens. Is it a good idea to switch old laptop to Linux? Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:05 AM PST I have an old laptop with an i7 2670QM, 6gb RAM, and GT 635M It currently runs windows 7, and works well enough. There are a few things that I would like from win10, but I tried running it and it's just slow. Windows 7 support is ending soon, and while I'm not super scared of getting a virus or something, I don't think that's a good long term solution. I was thinking of getting a new laptop, but I don't want a cheap one and I can't afford a good one, so I thought I might as well stick with what I've got. I've been mildly interested in Linux for a while now, but I don't really know much about it and stuff. I've tried it a bit in a VM on my desktop, but this old laptop seems to just not well with VMs (I've had issues with getting them running and then resolution), and besides I don't think that's the best solution. Looking for general advice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:15 AM PST I'm trying to install Lubuntu onto a SSD, I'm using an old HP PC that came with Windows 7 and uses AMD and Athlon II. I've verified that the USB works on other computers where I'm able to successfully boot into it. On this desktop however, the BIOS recognises the SanDisk USB that's plugged in, but whenever I go to boot from it the screen goes blank and says "Missing Operating System. GRUB" I've done some reading and allegedly, HP desktops that came with Win7 doesn't have a SecureBoot option in the BIOS. I've also looked at all the BIOS options and all I could not see anything regarding secure boot or LegacyMode. Since I failed in getting Lubuntu to work, I tried to also install Windows10. I'm able to boot into and launch the Win10 LiveUSB and initiate the installation, but I receive the following error when actually trying to get it to start installing: "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one". Really confused at this point as to how to install an OS onto this SSD so that I can use my PC again. Any advice or suggestions or appreciated. [link] [comments] |

How do I fix a slow console on 18.04? Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:47 PM PST On a fresh 18.04 install on PowerEdge T310, the server console is incredibly slow to scroll. There appears to be a mode switch after Grub is invoked where the console visible changes (the font becomes less thicker), and everything after that is slow. For example, doing an ls takes multiple seconds to smoothly and slowly scroll up the screen, where this should be normally instantaneous. I know in previous versions, there was blacklisting of framebuffer drivers and setting GRUB configurations, but most of the information I can find is extremely old and out-of-date. Just to clarify, this is graphical slowness. The system runs and boots normally. [link] [comments] |

I messed up SELINUX and can't login (Centos) Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:31 PM PST I was trying to install Fortify Security Center (SC) on my system and after the connection to the apache tomcat server another folder is created that holds the key to logging into the SC. The problem is that the folder was never created I tried undeploying/redeploying and no folder was created. I have done the installation before with no issues like this. The first time I installed the SC there was not any security policy installed and on this newer install there is a security policy. I figured that might be the reason it was causing issues and not creating the proper folder. I went into the SELinux config(/etc/selinux/config) and changed enforcing to permissive and targeted to minimum and then rebooted. After doing the reboot I could not login and it would basically freeze on a blank screen. I have tried rescue mode and trying to re-edit the config file but its empty and i have tried setenforce to change it back to enforcing but no luck the changes do not save. I don't mind starting all the way over but would rather not. Is there any way fix this [link] [comments] |
Want to buy a SSD for Ubuntu/CentOS installs Posted: 10 Dec 2019 09:32 AM PST I installed Ubuntu and CentOS on my primary SSD this weekend but a friend recommended me installing them to a separate drive all together to prevent jacking up my Windows 10 install. I will be dual booting everything. I was wondering what size drive would be best? I found https://www.microcenter.com/product/615299/inland-professional-256gb-3d-tlc-nand-sata-iii-6gb-s-25-internal-solid-state-drive at my local Micro Center. The reason I am asking is from this guide: https://itsfoss.com/install-ubuntu-1404-dual-boot-mode-windows-8-81-uefi/
Root.
And swap file. I have 16 GB of RAM in my computer. I've read I need "double the amount of the RAM". See: https://itsfoss.com/install-ubuntu-1404-dual-boot-mode-windows-8-81-uefi/
I was going to see CentOS as a developer environment and then Ubuntu to try and see what I could do in replicate, including maybe installing 2-3 games. What is right and wrong in this article and is the 256 GB drive OK for both total OSes? [link] [comments] |
Frustration with Dual Booting Windows 10 and Ubuntu Posted: 10 Dec 2019 09:16 AM PST I have been trying to dual boot for almost 10hours now. Its frustrating. The Youtube tutorial was so smooth and easy but it wasnt like that on my machine. I have looked online and tried many things but nothing makes sense and nothing works. The problem is that I cant get past the Ubuntu installation via live USB. It just freezes at some point and the cursor keeps buffering and nothing happens. At first, I could not get Ubuntu to detect Windows 10 when trying to set partition. Right now, I cant get past that stage. Its stucked at the "Updates and other Software" I have probably force shut down my laptop for more than 30 times now because I cant do anything if it just freezes (the cursor is moving but cant be clicked). Man, I need help. [link] [comments] |

How do I set my CPU governor on boot? Posted: 10 Dec 2019 09:06 AM PST I'm running Linux Mint 19.2 with a custom kernel (5.4.2-blackbox) and I'm trying to set my CPU governor to "performance" on boot. I have an i7 7700k and I tried disabling p-state with GRUB using I don't have Linux-Tools and can't seem to install it for some reason. I have tried putting (repeating to core 8) through rc.local, and I have tried running the same thing as a script in init.d. When I'm fully started up, the command works as expected, as do the scripts when I manually run them, but I want them to run on startup. [link] [comments] |
Changing windows drive names from live linux Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:17 AM PST I have to upgrade a system from windows 7 to 10, and according to a manual I have to assign a drive letter to a partition that doesn't have one yet. Windows doesn't let me change the drive letter or edit the partition in any way, but on linux it behaves just like any other partition. Is it possible to assign a windows drive letter with some tool on linux? (i am aware that linux itself doesnt use drive letters, i just want to manipulate how windows behaves) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:52 AM PST This post is more like a rant but apart from getting it off my chest I'll try to address my struggles and issues I've came across in Linux. I'm a new user. Although I have used Linux distros in the past, I'm not very experienced with it. I use Windows 10 every day, at work and at home. But I really want to migrate into a more free and open source OS cause I really think that it's much more superior. I had to use it quite a few times as an engineer, wrote some scripts but I really didn't know what it was happening. Also I had to develop some software for raspberry pi and I had to spend time setting up toolchain on windows and I think that would be much more productive on a linux machine. The problem is that I find obstacles every time, and I think that's because I haven't read much about it. I remember when I tried Ubuntu a year ago and I was struggling to setup the mouse wheel speed. I recently installed Debian 10 and I'm trying to learn more about it. Gnome doesn't seem so much friendly to me, I found KDE more attractive but I'm trying to see if there's any other difference apart from their appearance. So, now I'm just struggling in finding software, in general. I mean, in windows I just googled everything and downloaded software from trusted sources. That seems a little different in Linux. So I'd like a piece of advice on this. Any help or tip would be appreciated and thank you for spending time reading this. [link] [comments] |
Help I install Ubuntu and then when I restart it doesn’t work. Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:48 AM PST I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a pc that used to run Windows 10 but now has no OS installed but after the installation is done I have to restart, so I click restart once it turns off I remove the thumb drive I booted off of and I go into the boot manager but it's empty and my own ssd isn't coming up as bootable. But when I go through the setup again it shows that there's already Ubuntu on the drive and asks me if I want to delete it or run along side it. Any help is welcome and thanks in advance. Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:43 AM PST I went and made a live usb of Manjaro xfce to try out so I won't damage my windows install before I'm sure I want to switch, and the os resets after each reboot, even if the usb is not removed after shut down. I used Rufus 3.8.1580 to make the usb [link] [comments] |
An Arch update has screwed me. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:42 PM PST Last night I did an update cause I knew there was a tonne of packages that needed to be done. When I woke up the next morning I was getting 8 tonnes of screen tearing. So I started doing some research and trying things to work and nothing was fixing it. Things I've tried: + Changing to Noveau + Changing compositor + Screwing with Xrandr + Changing Picom config + Restarting a few times + Disabling my intel gpu + Read the Arch wiki Problems: - Screentearing - Anything not eDP-1-1 now shows blank in i3 even though the workspace still works and stuff spawns on that monitor. - Mirroring my main display works fine but the moment I make it it's own screen. Blank. Screen works in Plasma and Cinnamon just fine though. This is starting to get ridiculous as I've tried every single thing on the wiki and on forums and yet nothing works. Currently running:+ i3-Gaps+ NVIDIA GTX 1050 on NVIDIA's drivers.+ Intel i7-7700HQ processor + picom+ Arch Linux (5.4.2-arch1-1) Anything you need just ask. I need cloud storage for my CherryTree Files in case my computer ever gets broken, I use Xubuntu. Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:35 AM PST Here is the link to the notetaking application I am using which is called CherryTree https://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/. On my windows machine I had something called onedrive in which I could have a file names onedrive in my file manager and any file I put into that folder will be synced to the cloud so that if I lose it on my computer I can still redownload the material online at a later time. Is there anything similiar to this for Xubuntu? Am I going about this the wrong way is there a better solution? Thank you for any help. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 10 Dec 2019 09:34 AM PST Hello, I am trying to get into Linux and I've been browsing some distributions and found Fedora to be the most attractive, but I also heard that Fedora has a solid learning curve. So my question would be: Would it be stupid to use Fedora as a newcomer to Linux? is it too complex for a new user? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:48 AM PST Hi. I'm new to Linux. I'm currently using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as my daily driver OS on my desktop and Surface Go (not perfect on Surface Go btw). However, I want to know if there is a more privacy distro other than Qubes, Tails, Kali & Parrot (I've looked up for privacy distros on the Internet and did a little research). I want a distro geared toward privacy and more stable for daily use because I'm not super enthusiastic and don't have a lot of time for fixing things in Linux. And, is there anything a new comer should know about Linux? If there are any suggestions, I'd be grateful. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
