    Simple Questions - December 10, 2019

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Just wanted to put this out there in case someone comes across it and is in a similar situation to me

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:14 AM PST

My desk isn't big enough for my tower to sit on so I was looking for some type of computer stand. The generic ones on Amazon won't really cut it and the one from Ikea that hangs off your desk is too small so I found this on Ikea. Works perfectly as a tower stand, and I drilled a hole in the back so I could route all my power cables through and have the power bar sitting in the cubby, nice and neat. Some pics.

Looking for a chair to game in. Any suggestions?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:58 PM PST

The cheap, flimsy, knock off racing chair I've been gaming on for the past couple years is on its last legs. This means it is finally time for an upgrade!

I'm not necessarily looking for a gaming chair specifically as I hear those can often cause back problems. I'm looking for a breathable mesh ergonomic office chair.

One problem I face with finding a chair like this is most of them are too small for me. At 6'5" (196 cm) I need a chair that I can sit in comfortably without worrying about drilling my shoulders into the headrest.

I wouldn't like to spend more then 200 dollars, but I understand quality comes at a price and I would be willing to spend more.

Please send me what types of chairs you guys use and any suggestions that may work for me! Thanks a million!

PC turns on but no signal to monitor

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:30 AM PST

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/sxXwcq

This is my second pc build.

It boots up all fans spin - no mobo sound, though cpu fan spins. There is no signal to monitor. I've tried moving the RAM to the first slot, but the AMD cpu fan is so cluinky and big it blocks any RAM that would fit there.

Also I can't turn it off by clicking the off button.

The MoBo I'm using is ASUS B350 PLUS, anyone has any ideas as to what could be happening?

PC noob ( havent used one in about 6 years) what do i need?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:33 PM PST

Haven't used a desktop in about 6 years a laptop in probably two and my mum randomly offered me one to share for christmas. We were at PC World and the guy suggested two different things this gaming PC:

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/pc-specialist-tornado-r5-amd-ryzen-5-gtx-1660-gaming-pc-1-tb-hdd-120-gb-ssd-10195687-pdt.html which has

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Processor

    RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD & 120 GB SSD

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB

190 FPS when playing Fortnite at 10

And i know what none of that means

But he also offered i think it was this:

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/lenovo-ideacentre-510a-15icb-intel-core-i5-desktop-pc-256-gb-ssd-black-10193248-pdt.html

    Which apparently has:Intel® Core™ i5-9400 Processor

RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 256 GB SSD

    Or maybe :

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/lenovo-ideacentre-510a-15arr-amd-ryzen-5-desktop-pc-1-tb-hdd-128-gb-ssd-black-10181025-pdt.html

    Which apparently has:

Achieve: Fast computing with the latest tech

    AMD Ryzen 5 2400G Processor

    RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD & 128 GB SSD

Graphics: AMD Radeon RX Vega 11

The guy said it was basically the same as i said i would want to do 3d model rendering, general coding and also playing a few games as well as general stuff and the salesman said the second one could "probably" play fortnite With a monitor that looked bulky and a colour backgroud lit keyboard and mouse which my mum liked. She was offered the gaming one for around £1048 and the "normal" was like £7-800

Thing is im unemployed and a carer for my mum who's disabled and i dont want her ripped off. What does everything mean and what do i need and where can i get it where its easy to set up?

Prepping for a good winter break!

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:52 PM PST

    Hello, pals!

I just purchased the last piece I need to build my second computer! Now I am just waiting for everything to deliver, and I can start building. I am very excited.

Choosing parts for this computer came together a lot faster than the first time around, which was about four (five?) years ago. I knew to look for sales and not to him and haw about pieces that likely won't matter in the long run (as well as which pieces will matter more than I thought). I am fortunate enough to have a Micro Center near me, and open box specials are life savers.

I had a hard time choosing between the GTX 1660 Super and the RX 590, but when I saw the 590 on sale for $144, that was the end of it.

I started with an $800 absolute max budget and came in at $660 (closer to $700 after tax). Any, below is the build! Let me know what you think; there's still time to return everything and start from scratch.

Does the Asus Prime X470 Pro comes with latest BIOS?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:52 PM PST

Hey, decided to jump on the red train and get the Ryzen 3700X. I picked the Asus Prime X470 Pro Mobo and I was wondering if the board comes with the latest version of the BIOS. Unfortunatly this motherboard doesn't have the bios flash update feature and I would need an old AMD CPU to update it which I don't have.

    Thanks much love.

A big thank-you to this sub; got my build up and running!

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:56 AM PST

Apologies if this doesn't fit in the rules, just wanted to pass on my gratitude to the users here and the Simple Questions thread didn't seem appropriate.

I didn't comment much on this sub, if at all, as I had no idea what I was doing and wanted to gather as much info as I could without bothering people with seriously basic questions. But after lots of scrutiny here and help from friends IRL, I ordered some parts and they all arrived last week. Built the PC in two sittings over the recent weekend and it purred to life on Sunday!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this sub, all the info and opinions, links and advice you were offering each other helped immensely and turned a project I wanted to do, but was dreading, into something really fun and honestly quite straightforward to do. With Black market Friday sales I kept within my budget of $1600 and built something that suits me and my use well.

Constantly upgrading vs waiting for components to be outdated

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:41 PM PST

Hey everyone. I wanted to hear your thoughts on how you upgrade your gear. Do you normally wait a few years before upgrading to a completely new system? Or do you constantly upgrade and sell your components once newer generations come out? I personally wait for the newest generation to go on super sale (around black Friday) then sell my not so outdated last gen equipment so it still has value.

Trying to clone a HDD but need a third SATA cable. My MB seems to use SATA Express, need advice.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:37 PM PST

Ok guys, so I'm trying to clone an HDD that's failing. I bought a new HDD today and realized once I'd gotten home that there are only two SATA cords in the case. My computer takes up to 3 drives, I believe.

So I figured I'd just need to buy a third SATA cord and I'd be set, but I saw that my MB uses SATA Express, which from what I've read is basically dead.

Here's my motherboard's specs. Maybe I missed something, but is there another way to connect my drive to my MB?

    • Supports 7th / 6th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors
    • Dual Channel DDR4, 4 DIMMs
    • Intel® USB 3.1 with USB Type-C™ - The World's Next Universal Connector
    • 3-Way Graphics Support with Exclusive Ultra Durable Metal Shielding over the PCIe Slots
    • Dual PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 Connectors with up to 32Gb/s Data Transfer (PCIe NVMe & SATA SSD support)
    • 3 SATA Express Connectors for up to 16Gb/s Data Transfer
    • 115dB SNR HD Audio with Built-in Rear Audio Amplifier
    • Killer™ E2200 Gaming Networks
    • High Quality Audio Capacitors and Audio Noise Guard with LED Trace Path Lighting
    • APP Center Including EasyTune™ and Cloud Station™ Utilities
    • GIGABYTE UEFI DualBIOS™ Technologyp[

I'll add pics of the connector on the MB as a reply (and yes I know its dusty I'm cleaning it as I replace stuff)

Now, if I'm stuck with having to use SATA Express, what options do I have to get another drive in there and get my HDD backed up?

    Pc not detecting a signal

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:34 PM PST

I upgraded my ram from 2400mhz go 3600mhz and I go to boot it, it goes into bios and I change the speed to 3600 since it was still reading 2400mhz, it restarts and it doesn't detect a signal from HDMI or DisplayPort,

    I bought G. Skill's Trident Z RGB 16gb 3600 if that's needed.

    Possible dead mobo or cpu?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:22 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    • Gigabyte B450m DS3H mobo
    • Ryzen 3600 with stock cooler
    • 2x 8GB T-Force Delta TUF
    • Xtreme Aorus GTX 1060 6gb
    • EVGA 500w White 80+ PSU
    • 120GB ssd and 1tb HDD

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I installed my brand new ryzen 3600, b450 mobo and 16gb ram without any problems, the computer recognized all new hardware and I managed to play a couple games for a few minutes to test it out. Then I turned the PC off to do some cable management but when I finished and turned it back on, it wouldn't boot. I get a black screen and no display found whenever I turn on the PC. Power button will not turn off the PC no matter for how long I keep it pressed, reset button won't work either. Video card, mouse and keyboard lights won't turn on like they usually do, however the video card's coolers do spin, the cpu and case coolers are also spinning. RAM rgb turns on too.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • Made sure every cable is properly connected
    • Disassembled the whole PC and assembled back step by step to the same problem
    • Switched back to my old kabylake mobo and cpu and everything worked fine, including the new RAMS which i tested. This would mean that the problem lies in the Ryzen 3600 or it's mobo

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This problem started last night and I went to sleep without fixing it. When I woke up today the first thing I did before switching back to my old mobo/cpu was to make sure every cable was properly connected one last time and when I tried booting it did work! Then I turned off the PC, moved the case back to where it belongs thinking it was fixed BUT the problem started again. Since then I have checked multiple times every cable and reseated every component, still doesn't work.

Ryzen 5 3600 Temps Too High?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:01 PM PST

*LAST THREAD I MADE DID NOT WORK*

I recently purchased my new PC and here are my specs: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/MoronicLouie/saved/YW8r6h

The 3600 is in an MSI B450M MORTAR MAX m-ATX motherboard

Idle, the CPU is averaging around 50-60 degrees

My CPU voltage is on AUTO in MSI Command Center, and still avergaes 50-60 degrees

What voltage is it supposed to be idling at?

My core keeps fluctuating between 1.076 - 1.384V on idle, isn't that too high?

Is that what's making my CPU 60 degrees on idle?

The settings being on AUTO are supposed to keep the voltage low on idle?

Really confused, my old Intel i7 would average at 0.768V and stay below 40 degrees at idle.

Any specific settings in the BIOS or COMMAND CENTER I should put in for AMD?

This is my first AMD processor and I'm using the stock cooler and thermal paste that was supplied.

    My first "legit" build

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:09 PM PST

Hey everyone, I'm planning on making my first "actual" build. I say that because I've got an abomination of a machine right now which was a prebuilt PC that I added upgrades too. the thing has 2 different types of RAM and has countless issues. I'm a lot more pc literate than I was before, though I still make some mistakes so I request the help of Reddit to give my parts a quick glance over just to make sure I'm not going to have any incompatibility issues. Or if you got any recommendations for better parts I'm all ears.

Is this stock motherboard M.2 heatsink good enough?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:48 PM PST

I recently bought a Sabrent Rocket 1TB SSD to go with my new Asus ROG Strix X570-F motherboard and Ryzen 7 3700X and pretty much everyone recommended I get the M.2 heatsink with it to get the max performance. The problem is that I didn't notice that the motherboard comes with its own M.2 heatsinks and the chipset fan cover design makes it impossible to install your own.

Is this stock heatsink good enough or will my SSD still get thermally throttled? If it's not, does anyone have any ideas to get around this infuriating fan cover?

    Here are some pics showing the heatsinks and the fan cover over the M.2 slot;

Thoughts on upgrade before I purchase?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:42 AM PST

    Hello!

I'm upgrading my pentium build for Christmas and as It's only 2 weeks left before Christmas I need to start buying my parts.

    The build I put together is;

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/XJ94Mc

I'd really appreciate if you guys could give me some feedback on this build! If there is anything I should change or anything I should add (my budget for the upgrade is £800, so I have room to add a thing or two!)

I wanted this pc to be a productivity/gaming build hence the 3700x.

I will be gaming, streaming, rendering, photoshop for art and photo editing and eventually some video editing and Cad. (Games I play are pretty varied, but i'd like to be able to comfortably play at at or above 60fps 1080p-1440p)

Note that the items I marked as purchased are just excluded from the budget (i'm buying peripherals after christmas, same with the 2070s, I already own the seagate hdd)

Thank you so much for any help! I really appreciate it and it's gonna save me a lot of stress haha! Hope you have a lovely Christmas everyone!!

Couple questions on new GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:25 AM PST

Just purchased a GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER GAMING OC card and was surprised to see it only has an 8 pin power connector. I thought maybe something was off, but after looking at the 2060 Supers on Newegg, it looks like almost all of them have the 8 pin connector and the Nvidia Geforce page itself for the 2060 Super only shows 8 pins on the card. Are they just super efficient? Seems odd that my old, slower card required 8+6 but this much more powerful card only needs 8. Granted it has been almost 10 years since I have purchased a new GPU.

Also, there is a white LED right above the power connector that is on. According to Gigabyte's website, this means that the power cable is disconnected. Obviously it is not, as the card is recognized by my system, and I ma able to benchmark it. Any thoughts on that. Should I just ignore it?

And of course RGB fusion doesn't work, it won't even recognize my card, which again, according to Gigabyte's website, this card should have RGB. But after searching the web, that sounds like a pretty common problem. I dare say RGB on Gigabyte cards doesn't work on more cards than it actually does work on.

Help and advice with a PC draft

    15 y/o looking to buy a PC

I would use this for homework, gaming, PS and programming.

I am thinking about buying RAM, CPU and GPU second hand on eBay.

I am aiming to build after Christmas.

    • RAM: any 2x8GB ddr4 for £30 (used)
    • GPU: 1060/1660(ti)/vega 56 for £130 (used)
    • CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 for £70 (used)
    • Motherboard: ASRock B450M-HDV for £50 as it is a cheap micro-ATX which supports ryzen 9
    • PSU: EVGA 500/600W BR, depending which graphics card I get, for £50-60
    • Storage: any 1TB HDD and a cheap SSD for windows, for £30 and £15
    • Case: any old thing that fits and isn't too ugly. may be able to get one from my friend
    • Peripherals: have already been bought, but I got a monitor for free from my mum's work so would consider a second
