    Weird question about chromebooks.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:56 PM PST

Ok so, as we all know, a chromebook should never be considered anything even close to a gaming laptop.

However, I wanted something I could install a few emulators on, maybe get RuneScape, dwarf fortress. Basically, it would be like an old school gaming machine. Nothing with even remotely intense graphics.

So how does this sound: buy a cheap chromebook, erase the os and replace it with windows, get a bigger HD and maybe some ram, and install my games.

Would that even make sense to do? I literally don't need it for anything else, as I already have a high end gaming pc.

    Best power-efficient NVME drive?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:03 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade the 256gb NVME in my X1 carbon. Main requirements are 1TB size and one-sided to fit the laptop.

Is there a consensus about which drives are the best when keeping in mind battery/power efficiency? Typically I default to Samsung for SSDs, but I'd like to keep the battery life as high as possible.

Would the MSI gs be a good editing laptop?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:02 PM PST

I edit loads of photos and videos. I found one for 1900 and I figure a gaming computer is the way to go but I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers. It has rtx 2070, 1tb solid state core, and 16gb memory. Do I need more memory or is that easily bypassed by using external harddrives? I would appreciate any help. Or maybe a suggestion for a better editing laptop for under 2k. But I have to say,the gs looks sexy too! Or the stealth?

Decent laptop for $350 or less?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:04 AM PST

Specific requirements: None really. A disk drive would be nice, but is not a dealbreaker if there isn't one

Price and Country: $350 or less, United States

How important is weight and thinness: As long as I can take it to class, any size is fine

    OS: Windows

    Preferred Screen Size: N/A

CAD, Video editing, photo editing, or gaming: Yes. Gaming. I just want to be able to run Minecraft so I can play on our dorm server.

Specs for gaming: Like I said, the only specific game I can think of is Minecraft. As long as it can run at at least 30 fps, it'll be fine.

    Basic Everyday Laptop

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:22 AM PST

Hey all. 1st post in this subreddit.

This is going to seem like a such a generic post but I've had the same laptop for many year, far too many if in honest, and it's well past its use by date as it struggles with the most basic tasks now.

I'm a nice basic entry laptop, nothing fancy just want something a bit more with it compared to my 9 year old Sony vaio.

Has anyone got any makes/models to look at and avoid?

Need advice to sort out purchase deals

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:20 AM PST

Hey guys, i want to gift myself a nice laptop with good enough specs so that it should run most recent and future games decently, and for general multitasking. But the prices vary pretty wildly.

I've found items with a I7-9750h and NVidia GTX 1660ti in the '1100E/1250$ to 1500E/1650$' range, all costs included. Higher prices usualy have 32gb ram and twin 1tb HDD+SSD, thats it.

Are those ~ok~ deals in general, and is basically the higher cost for better ram worth it?
Is a laptop with an i5-9300H thats 200E/300$ cheaper just as good a laptop?

Does the Dell G5 GTX 1650 model overheat as badly as the RTX2060 model?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:53 AM PST

Looking to get a new laptop for school and gaming and the G5 with a 1650 seems like an absolute steal for the price range esp since they're on sale right now.

However I've seen the issue where the heating is bad on the G5– but it seems this is mostly in reference to the beefy 2060 model.

So my question is, can anyone with experience tell me if the 1650 model of this laptop has better heating? Or is it safe to assume a lower gpu like the 1650 would produce acceptable temperatures?

    Thanks

Reroute power in away from battery

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:39 AM PST

    Hi,

You know how your laptop runs on "power in" instead of battery when it reaches 100%? I was wondering if there was a setting that would allow the laptop to run on ac power even when the battery's not a 100%

    For a windows machine

I just got a new laptop and have destroyed batteries on all of my previous systems, I use this system for more than 7 hours a day and its battery is under 3 hours so I'd like to keep it that way.

Which Asus VivoBook is the better buy?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:09 AM PST

Brand new CAD $599.99 ($200 off for Boxing Day sale) -- comes to around $670 after taxes

    https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/asus-vivobook-15-6-laptop-slate-grey-amd-quad-core-r5-3500u-512gb-ssd-12gb-ram-windows-10/13974641

Used CAD $700 (Could try to negotiate the price down -- what's the most one should be willing to pay for this?)

    https://vancouver.craigslist.org/van/sys/d/vancouver-new-asus-vivobook-s15-thin/7013058389.html

I'm a pretty basic user. Just browse Chrome with multiple windows and multiple tabs, with heavy tabs like YouTube video/music streaming (so a good screen is important). I want to be able to multitask without stutter.

I'm also looking to have the option for light gaming (just once in awhile -- I'm not much of a gamer, actually!). Stuff like GTA 4, Bully: Scholarship Edition, Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, etc. (I wouldn't mind if they only worked on minimum settings either, although I figure some of these should work on recommended settings).

Which VivoBook is the better option?

Fans in cooling pad rattle when applying pressure on laptop with my hand

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:55 AM PST

I bought some random cooling pad (CoolBox for up to 17" laptops) for my GE65 Raider. It works well and fully fullfills my needs but the problem is that I tend to apply a bit of pressure with my hand on the laptop when playing games and as soon as I do that, the cooling pad flexes a bit and I can clearly hear the fans rattling, as if they're hitting the top of the cooling pad.

I can't imagine this is fixable, but just in case... any DIY ideas for making the cooling pad a bit more sturdy? I've tried to just not apply pressure with my hand but I do it without thinking, and when I'm using my headset I don't even hear it so I totally forget.

    Need a new laptop

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:01 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm currently a college student studying Graphic Design. My current laptop is an Early 2015 MacBook Air with 1.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 and 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Over the course of this semester I noticed my laptop wasn't powerful enough for the applications I was using for my classes which included: Adobe Premier Pro, Bridge, Lightroom, Unity, Photoshop for now. I also had to get an external hard drive for all these applications due to the limited storage I have on my MacBook.

Anyways, I'm new to the whole specs info world but I know I need at least 16GB of RAM and Intel Core i7 for my career choice as of now.

The laptops I was looking at were:

    1. Dell XPS 13 or 15 (2019 model)

    2. The Razerblade Stealth 13 (2019 model) or maybe 15 inch model

    3. The new MacBook Pro 13 (2019 model) The only reason I don't really want the MacBook is because it doesn't support 32 Bits Apps because of OSX 10.15 Catalina

    4. HP Spectre x360 13t

If you have other options please comment them below and also which specific model and specs I should get.

    Budget Gaming?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:01 AM PST

What would you consider a "gaming laptop" when you have a budget of 400$? I'm looking into pc gaming since console users are toxic and I'm extremely broke. What would be the best laptop I can get for $400 or under that could run GTAV at mid/low settings?

Narrow 15" laptops, cheap but with 16 GB of RAM? m3 vs i5?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:47 AM PST

I'm looking for an affordable laptop with 16 GB of RAM . Ideally I'd like a 13 or 14 inch display for portability.

I've noticed that 15" laptops with more RAM tend to be cheaper than smaller ones (am I right?)

I've also noticed some 15" laptop with thin bezels are quite narrow and not much wider than my current 13.3" laptop (12.8 inch / 325 mm).

So does anyone know of any cheap narrow 15" laptops with 16 GB of RAM?

Or a site that lets you search by width?

I want 16 GB of RAM as my current ones has 8 GB and is very slow now.

However, my current laptop CPU is:

    Intel Core m3-6Y30 CPU @ .90GHz 1.51 GHz

Would getting an i5 or i7 but sticking with 8GB of RAM be a big speed improvement over the m3?

Or should I hold out for finding a deal on a 16GB or RAM laptop?

I can't really afford a full priced 16 GB RAM laptop but the 8GB options are much more affordable.

But I don't want to get an i7 with 8GB or RAM and realize it's too slow.

    Thanks

    FPS cap on new laptop?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:40 AM PST

Just got a Lenovo legion Y540 It's got an i7, 16 gb ram and a 1660ti yet all of my games seemed to be capped at 60fps, even though in the game settings it's "uncapped". Example: league of legends; everything on max settings, uncapped FPS, but only getting 60 Fortnite; custom settings (mostly low) with epic viewing, I get a low of 13fps and a high of 27??? I've updated all the drivers, and tried almost anything I find to fix Does anyone know of an issue for this? Anything I find is 2-3 years old
