Something reliable like the old ThinkPads, just for college

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:00 AM PST

I'd like to replace my old PC with smth portable. Gaming on laptops isn't really great and probably won't be portable anymore, so I'll just need a laptop to watch Netflix and use office. I have an existing SSD. It would be great if it could fit a regular M.2 PCIe as well. As kid I had an old ThinkPad T60p. Those were great, but I don't like the newer ones that much.

So what's good for college, maybe with a decent iGPU for older games? I can hook up a monitor so I'd rather have a small display. And I'm spoiled by my great mechanical keyboard, is there any keyboard that doesn't feel like a 10$ calculator?

I know much about PCs, but laptops... I'm sorry ^^'

Looking for some kind of dock solution for new Asus RoG laptop

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:45 PM PST

My new laptop (link below) arrives this week and I'm looking for some kind of dock solution for it. Either that, or just some way to minimize the number of things I have to plug in/take out every time I return my laptop to my desk or take it with me.

Looking to connect it to a mouse and KB, external hard drive (stays in one place), Wacom tab, game controller, at least one external monitor, and a headset. Oh and of course the charger.

I've heard the Asus docks are absolute shit for their gaming laptops, so I'm looking for another solution. Open to suggestions: Bluetooth mice and keyboards, Bluetooth audio receivers, generic USB C docks, etc.

    Intel core i3 8145u, Amd ryzen 3 3200u or Amd Athlon 300u?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:04 AM PST

So I am looking to buy a laptop and I am between these 3 models that have the processors above and I am currently stuck at witch one to pick.

    The laptops are the following:

    Lenovo IdeaPad S340 (i3-8145U/8GB/128GB/W10)

    Lenovo IdeaPad C340-14API (3200U/4GB/128GB/FHD/Touchscreen/W10 S)

    Lenovo IdeaPad C340-14API (300U/4GB/128GB/FHD/W10 S)

I really like the touch screen and stylous of the last 2 ones, but the processing power of the first really makes me unable to decide.

Sick and tired of this current trend of ultra slim and integrated laptops with no removable parts. Can anyone suggest some brands that don't follow this trend?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:53 AM PST

Most brands I've looked at like Apple, Dell and Lenovo, their batteries, harddrives and RAM are integrated (soldered) to the chipset. I'm specifically looking for a laptop that has the following specs that can still be upgraded in the future:

    - Powerful CPU (Intel or AMD)

    - SSD and HDD slots

    - RAM: 16 GB (minimum)

    - Graphics: Nvidia with ideally some CUDA cores

    - Battery life: 4+ hours (removable)

Are these specs a pipe dream or do some brands still exist that do this? I already have a decent desktop PC but ideally would like a powerful laptop because I tend to travel a lot, and sometimes need the extra graphics for games and parallel computing tasks.

cpu & gpu temp skyrockets when plugged in

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:59 AM PST

So I may have fucked up the thermals on my pc. As stated in title above, the cpu and gpu temp drastically increase when I've my pc on charging, especially the cpu.

To give you an idea, the cpu ranges to about 50-60 when not charging. Perhaps that is still considered hot, but I don't really think it's too bad.

The problem is when it's on charging. The cpu almost instantly gets hotter and within a few moments, I see it at about 75 or more, ranging from about 70-90.

    gpu when not charging: 50-60

    gpu when charging: 55-65

Any Ideas what's causing this and what I can do about it?

Thinking of selling the MacBook (US) and going back to Windows

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:12 AM PST

I bought a seller refurb 2015 MBP from eBay earlier this year to learn coding. I was new to the field and wanted to make sure I had the easiest OS to install what I needed without headaches to be productive and learn.

I've since realized it's not that much harder to get a windows machine configured with Linux/wsl terminal shell, especially since I want to do front end development.

I have a PC I started using again and really miss windows. Mac is great in a sense that it just works so smoothly but I prefer windows. I think I can probably sell the MBP for about the same amount of $ I bought it for, hopefully locally.

Lots of questions going through my mind: - should I let go of the MBP, knowing it's the best one ever made possibly up until this year's model? - should I even get a laptop given that I have a PC? The hope is I find a Dev job and use the work provided laptop for mobility and what not. - lastly, what laptop should I get? I'm leaning towards Lenovo Thinkpads, and my budget is around $550 max. The e595 is on Amazon for around that price)

I don't need it for gaming. I typically just surf with vs code open, twitch, and maybe 4 or 5 chrome tabs.

    Thanks

Acer aspire e15 for music production?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:28 AM PST

I saw this model in amazon for about $350 and was wondering if it's good enough for amateur music production. I'm not a gamer so i don't think i would care that much about the gaming side of the laptop. If y'all have better laptop suggestions under 400 then lay it on me. : D

Query about upgrading SSD and RAM

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:16 AM PST

    I have a Dell Inspiron 5570, i7 8th gen, 8 gb ram and Intel uhd 620. I've got a 256gb SSD but I was thinking of getting a 1tb ssd.

My laptop has a M.2 SATA SSD (3 Pin one) And the one I'm thinking of getting is this:

Western Digital WD Blue 1 TB M.2 2280 SATA Internal Solid State Drive.

Now there's the NVMe M.2 PCle from Samsung:

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1 TB NVMe M.2 PCIe Internal Solid State Drive. (This is the two pin one)

So which one should I go for? I went through a couple of Dell forums and some of them say it'll work and on another forum they say it won't work. So I'm really confused, any help will be appreciated.

I'm also gonna upgrade my ram to 16gb from crucial:

    Crucial 8GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/S (PC4-19200) SR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT8G4SFS824A

    Apologies for any grammatical errors.

On the laptop hunt: refurbished xPS 15 or Surface Laptop 3?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:24 AM PST

Hi, looking for a new laptop as my current macbook pro is just about the least functional functioning device out there (1/3 screen blacked out + lines across screen horizontally, broken trackpad, near dead battery) and i just don't think repairing it is a viable option.

Looking to transition to a windows laptop with a budget ~2000$AUD and have settled on two choices with the help of a techsavvy mate (who self-admittedly is very biased towards microsoft products). A couple refurbished XPS 15s from dell (one 2in1) or Surface Laptop 3. I'm a science student (chem major so nothing too computer intensive) and light gamer (just csgo but would like 60fps) and the type of person to have 50 tabs running at once

The details on each are (im just gonna dump everything that looks relevant because im not that literate when it comes to specs):

    XPS 15-9575 2in1 quad core 8th gen i7-8705G 4.1GHz, 16GB memory, 15.6inch 4k Ultra HD touchscreen, 512GB SSDHD, AMD Radeon RX Vega M Graphics with 4GB HBM2 Graphics Memory, 75 battery size

    XPS 15- 9570 6 cores up to 4.1GHz 8th gen i7-8750H, 512GB SSDHD, 16GB Memory, 15.6inch 4k UHD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB, 97 battery size

    Surface Laptop 3 15" quad core 10th gen i7-1065G7, 16GB memory, 256 SSD, AMD Ryzen 5 3580U

From my understanding the big bonuses for the Dell are 4k screen, more powerful (though is it just overkill) and the dedicated graphics card helps massively for gaming whilst the surface has better form factor, newest model (xps have more recent models), brand new (though refurbished by dell seems to be a nonissue for this?), lighter and a better battery. I'd also like the opportunity to connect it to a monitor in the future and a laptop that isn't easy to destroy (I dont have a good trackrecord)

What do people recommend? Decision effectively has to be made within 24 hours (claim on the refurbished xps has to be acted upon) and I'm honestly torn as well as my 2 techsavvy mates being split so idk where to head

USB A - USB C charging when traveling

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:06 AM PST

Hey guys, I recently took a long flight and to my surprise the plane only had USB ports for charging your devices.

I like to bring my laptop loaded up with movies when I travel, and had no way to charge my Lenovo x260 on the flight.

so my question is, if I had a USB A to USB C cable (and ofc my laptop charged with USB C), could this USB port charge or slow charge a laptop enough to keep it up?

I would probably go for a thin&light device, not crazy specs, maybe the Lenovo x1 carbon tablet, thinkpad, or MS surface.
