Laptop Suggestions for College Posted: 28 Dec 2019 10:33 AM PST This laptop is for college, and I would like to purchase the best laptop option available. Thanks in advance! Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, good input devices, good keyboard, optical drive is preferred. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is a laptop for college! I would like this laptop to have a minimum Intel i7 Core and 6+ GB of RAM. Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000-$1,300 or less. United States of America. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Definitely good battery life, and best specifications for the money. How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight doesn't matter much. Thinness is semi-important. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, Mac is also an option. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12.5 inch+ Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Anything program that a college may require. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not really, but I do like a great CPU and core. I want it to handle games at a high rate but I don't need it to be amazing. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Dec 2019 07:44 AM PST Long story short I need a laptop for everyday browsing/on the go for emails, videos, spotify, google docs/google apps such as drive, and transferring media files. I only use Chrome for my browser. I'm a videographer who uses a stationary iMac Pro at home for editing and would like a laptop for travel. I have an iPad but want a desktop OS not mobile. As I mentioned above I only be using it for everyday tasks and media transfer. After a shoot I'll be transferring my media files (1080 and 4K) from my SD Card to my external hard drive to back up files. I'd imaging any laptop can do that but the transferring might take a while which doesn't bother me that much. WHich laptop would be better? Surface GO (8G, 128 storage) version or Pixelbook GO $649 version [link] [comments]

Raplacing my desktop with a laptop Posted: 28 Dec 2019 10:47 AM PST Recently I have been thinking about replacing my (gaming) pc with a laptop for various reasons. The reasons are as follows:
I would be satisfied with a laptop that suffices my needs and I could always plug it onto my TV (with keyboard and mouse) if I wanted to use it at the desk. Secondly I would prefere to be able to play games such as Hearthstone every once in a While. I would have to look into my steamlibrary if there are any games I would like to play but most of them are roguelite (and thus small games). Does anyone has any advice for switching from Desktop to laptop? I have always wanted a macbook but personally I think the cost/quality is way off compared to other laptops. Also I do hope diablo 4 will be playable on the PS4 as well :). Thanks in advance for all your answers. [link] [comments]
Help me pick - Surface laptop 3 or Asus zenbook 14 with screenpad? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 01:53 PM PST As the title says - please help me make a choice. I'm torn between these two awesome laptops. I'm looking for something under $1400, that's light, powerful, has a long battery life, and looks good to carry around for work/school. I'll be using it mostly for programming in python and R, and for working in PowerPoint and Excel, with the occasional video editing and light gaming. I feel like the surface laptop is very aesthetically pleasing, and I love that the keyboard has dedicated home, end, delete and pgup, pgdn keys. The downside is the fact that I'll need to carry a dongle for extra USB ports, SD cards and hdmi. The ASUS laptop is also easy on the eyes, but the keyboard layout is sub-optimal (I'm one of those people who hates using the mouse while working in excel), and the screenpad feels gimmicky - I don't see myself really using it to the fullest extent. I think having a 10th gen Intel Core i7, 16 gigs of ram and at least 256gb of storage seems like a good way to future-proof for the next 5 years or so. My old laptop worked for about 7 years, before it gave up a few months back. What would you pick and why? Do you think there's another option I should consider at this price point? Can I switch out my 1366x768 screen for a full HD 1920x1080? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 01:40 PM PST My parents bought me an HP laptop with seemingly pretty nice specs (16gb ram, 500gb ssd, core i5 10th generation) but as soon as I booted my laptop up I noticed the display was a downgrade from my old Lenovo. I went into display settings to hopefully maximize something but realized the screen resolution simply isnt full HD. Pretty sure it's possible but would it be relatively easy and affordable to try and replace my screen for a 1920×1080? The display is serviceable but I wanted something crisp that feels more high end and modern. I do video editing and photoshop and I read full HD is necessary. It's a 15.6 touch screen so idk if that's going to make things more difficult or expensive. Not to sound like an ass but my parents paid all $550 for it and not a penny came from me so it would be worth it if I could upgrade for $200ish or less. Any tips/advice? [link] [comments]

How to make sure if ribbon cables are plugged in correctly in the motherboard? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 01:22 PM PST So I opened up my laptop cleaned dust replaced thermal paste, then after in assembly it back the mousepad doesn't work, I think I didn't plugged in correctly the ribbon cable ? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 12:38 PM PST I cant decide if I should be buy a c930 ( i7 16gb ram 256gb ssd UHD) brand new or an open box c940 ( i7 12gb ram 512gb ssd FHD ) If going with the c940 I would almost rather get the 4k (16gb ram) but don't know if I can justify the extra $400 or so it'll cost (and don't really like that most people say the battery only lasts 5hrs for the 4k however is not necessarily a deal breaker for me). Where as the FHD c940 would only cost me an extra $80 than the 4k c930. Is it worth upgrading to the c940 at all or should I just get the better spec c930 and save myself the money? Considering liquid metalling my laptop and would like advice Posted: 28 Dec 2019 12:37 PM PST I own a first gen Zephyrus and am an architecture student who also games. For Christmas with boxing day, I was able to afford getting a new larger SSD and more ram, as it had previously caused me issues the other semester. My temperatures tend to sit on the higher side, at around 85 for gaming. I tend to find this is more often than not, and have already asked in r/gaminglaptops and was told these were normal temperatures, which I doubt. Any suggestions and feedback are appreciated, I would prefer to do everything at once for changing parts. [link] [comments]
Laptop fan constantly whirring Posted: 28 Dec 2019 12:18 PM PST The fan starts whirring as soon as I start any activity, regardless of very low CPU usage (as low as 10%) and very low temp. I don't have the instrument to check the temperature but on touching it's as cold as any metal surface in room temperature. I thoroughly cleaned the fan, the heat sink and applied fresh thermal paste, after consulting certain online article on similar matters. It didn't help, at all. Then I asked a tech guy to come over and check, which he did, and then concluded that I need a new fan. Now, I have very little knowledge about computers but afaik, the fan is supposed to spin only as instructed, depending on the temperature. So how does a laptop part whose only job is to spin start acting arbitrarily on it's own and thus require a replacement? I've been ripped-off on several occasions by tech guys while repairing my computers and phones by having me buy replacement parts when not actually required so I'm a little apprehensive this time. The question, therefore, is: do I need a new fan? If yes, how does a laptop part comprising of a simple circuit with a motor and blades start acting up on it's own? If no, what could be the problem? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 11:47 AM PST Hi, I am looking for a new laptop, and am looking at the Acer Helios 300. However, the one I have found has the 8gb ram option Link . Ideally, I would like to upgrade this in the near future, and was just wondering if anyone can let me know if this is possible? Or is the ram soldered in so it can't be removed and upgraded? Also, if I were to upgrade, what do I need to look out for to buy, can you use any memory cards? Thanks [link] [comments]

Could anyone recommend a good laptop for University? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 10:44 AM PST I know I can find reviews online but I'd much prefer info from people on reddit. All I'm looking for is a laptop where I can write essays, have multiple tabs open and watch YouTube without the screen lagging (as my current one does). I see recommendations like Dell Chromebooks, ACER, Lenovo but I literally have no idea. I don't want to buy a seemingly good expensive laptop that has features which I will never use. My price range is anything below £700. [link] [comments]

Question about laptop reformat Posted: 28 Dec 2019 09:19 AM PST I have a Sony Vaio I purchased in 2011. It's slowed down quite a bit as it's obviously very old for a computer. The bootup alone could take about 10 minutes before the laptop is usable. Is it worth reformatting this? It seems that even if I clear out the old unnecessary programs and drivers, the hardware is still worn and obsolete (HHD vs new SSD) that perhaps a reformat isn't all that beneficial at this point. I have purchased a new computer in the meantime, but is this worth salvaging, even to just use as a server or something (it has a 600gb hard drive)? Or, would I basically just be "polishing a turd"? Also, if I do reformat, is there a way to keep my current MS Office? I don't have the license keyz anymore, and it's the old one-type Office (I don't need the newer 365 with the monthly charge). Thanks for your input. [link] [comments] |
