Posted: 17 Dec 2019 05:27 AM PST I am newbie into networking especially with Ethernet cables. I want to crimp cat5 cable but confused to find the right order to crimp. I need some help to line up all the coloured individual cables into RJ45 clip. Here is the pic https://imgur.com/a/kFzVxVB [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:29 AM PST Hi all – I'm confused by the different uses of "keystone" I've run into lately. Q1: What makes a jack a "keystone jack"? Is it the snap-in aspect? Q2: Are all wall jacks "keystone jacks"? What other kind of wall jacks are there? (Assuming we're talking only about RJ45/8P8C jacks.) For example, I wonder if there are wall plates with the jacks built-in, maybe all one piece of molded plastic – I haven't seen any. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Covering top and bottom floor with wifi. Best way/fix to current setup Posted: 17 Dec 2019 07:37 PM PST Hello! So i am in a two story house that doesnt get full wifi coverage. I took the task to solve this and have not been succesfull. So the current setup is modem and main router in the 2md floor st the end of the house (will come back to this). Things i have tried:
Things i am considering:
House is pure concrete (not USA) so walls are really thick and solid. Modem is arris. Main router is asus RT-AC68U, second router is tplink archer c7. Internet speed 150mbps ethernet. When tested through wifi 2nd floor about 45mbps. When tested with extender in first floor about 15mbps (when it works). Let me know your suggestions and if i need to provide my info. Thanks! Trying to understand my setup. Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:44 PM PST So I have an edgerouter x and an access point connected to port 4 for my wireless needs in my home. I have my internet modem connected to the first port and everything is working as it should. I have a handful of other devices hardwired to a tp-link switch, my plex server, my main pc, and a Nas. They do all the heavy lifting on my network for hosting files and all that. I plugged my switch into a free port on my edgerouter. I haven't been able to find my answer on Google, but when traffic goes between my hardwired computers on the switch, does the switch do all the work? Or does the data have to go through the switch, to the edgerouter, back to the switch, then to its final destination? Or does it just hit the switch then head to the other computer? I'm trying to figure out how stuff like this works in the networking world. I'm doing some reading to learn, but with how much I need to learn I almost feel like I need a networking for dummies book haha. If anyone has any recommendations that would be great! How do you handle devices of different depths on a rack? Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:23 PM PST Hi all – So I'm looking at racks that have adjustable depths. Like this one. I assume that you can only have one depth set at any given time, that there aren't several sets of rear bars at different vertical points on the rack. If that's the case, how do you mount devices of different depths? Say I have a server that is 24 inches deep and an 18 inch deep UPS or something. I'm stumped on how that works. Some of this stuff is heavy and seems like it needs all four posts, not just the front. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:20 PM PST So, bought an Arris SBG6700-AC about two months ago and replaced our WOW rented gateway with it. Everything has been fine until today when download speeds dropped severely and latencies also went to the 120 - 150 ms range. Have made no changes to the Arris gateway sionce installation. Called WOW tech support and they basically said, well, it's your gateway so we can't do anything. Nice. The other bizarre thing is that when I try to do an Ookla speedtest it directs me to some server hosted by "Bresco Broadband". If anyone has any ideas to how to attempt to resolve this, they would be greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |
Has anyone had an issue with iPhones on their wireless? Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:31 PM PST I have a family member with a iphone 8 and whenever it first attempts to connect to the wireless it completely tanks the whole network. Without them letting me look at the phone I am completely stumped as to why. [link] [comments] |

Multi device internet with Gogo and TMobile offer Posted: 17 Dec 2019 07:34 PM PST Hey guys, if you want to use multiple devices with Gogo on a flight with the T-Mobile offer,n here's something you can do. I tested it on a Samsung device and on a Pixel. Both working great: 1. Hook up to Gogo WiFi with T-Mobile device 2. Sign into Gogo with T-Mobile creds 3. Enable tethering on your mobile phone 4. Connect another phone, tablet or PC and enjoy your free internet 5. Profit 😁 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:40 AM PST So my wife and I are buying our first house (yay!) but alas it has no wired ethernet. Luckily it is pre-wired with coax for TVs which should make cable rotting somewhat easier in that in less likely to drill into something important. Anywho I have a general idea of how I'd like to set things up but thought I'd see if there's anything I'm overlooking. To start out I plan to use Cat 6/a wire. I don't plan on needing 10Gbps to begin with but if I'm going to have to pull wire anyways I might as well be future-proof. I plan to have 2 wireless aps: 1 N for smart devices and 1 maybe 2 AC for everything else. I need a switch capable of vlans and poe for smart devices and a diy security system using cheaper cameras and shinobu via docker. Here's the parts I'm unsure of. I would like to have a patch panel and rack to keep everything tidy but have no clue what to look for. I have a unraid server I'd like to move into the rack as well but am in dire need of a decent UPS. You peeps have any suggestions as far as brands go? I know ubiquiti is super popular but seems rather expensive as well. [link] [comments] |
Need help setting up internet for grandpa Posted: 17 Dec 2019 07:24 PM PST Hello, hope this is the right place to post this! I'm trying to set up internet for my grandpa. I don't get to visit him that often from school and I really want to get it set up for him. He lives in a senior living apartment and I don't remember seeing an ethernet wall port. So I think the router/modem option is out of the question? I know other people in his apartment gets internet, but I'm not sure how. I'd rather not ask as they get pretty nosy. Is there something I can plug into a laptop or wall and get internet for a tablet or that laptop? He is very bad with tech, like he just upgraded to an iphone from a flip phone and I've spent 3 hrs sitting down with him on how to call and answer a phone call. He also just discovered "Google" and that "it has all the answers" lol. So anything I can just set up and not have him need to jangle with would be best. I like to think I'm pretty tech savvy but truth is I have no idea how internet works without a service provider. I don't think he is allowed to have ethernet wall ports installed. Obviously the cheaper the better as I'd be paying for it as a student. He'd be watching youtube and doing his crazy google searches, and that's pretty much it. We are with Tmobile and I think their cheapest option for a hotspot is $50/mo which is kind of pricey. We have unlimited mobile data, but I think it would be too much of a hassle for him to learn how to access youtube and might be too small with his phone... Thank you so much and happy holidays! So I'm not sure what to do, I figured here's the place to ask. Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:44 PM PST So, I use two phones, one for calling and just normal phone needs. The other I use to call my partner on discord (since the call quality there is better). Anyway, since I'm still under my parents, they control the internet. Long story short, our roommates are loud at late hours and so my parents set the wifi to shut off from 11pm-6am That's not the issue here. My second phone (the one for discord) "reconnected" to the internet. What I mean is it connects just fine but keeps giving me a sign in page saying "The application has been restricted by your network administrator" whenever I open discord on there. Two problems with this however
My question is how do I fix it. (The phone's a ZTE Avid Plus if that'll help anything) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:43 PM PST Absolute dogshit company Apparently their optimum is broken and they still havent fixed it in 1 week bullshit. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:37 PM PST NEED INTERNET HELP So I have good home internet, it's fast and for the most part reliable.. when the range is good. The modem is in the master bedroom ( my parents poor choice in choosing years ago) Unfortunately my brothers room gets no range even though he is only two rooms away. for whatever reason his room is a dead zone while the rest of the house is good to great. My room is also not the greatest with internet since i am in the basement but still surprisingly better than my brothers room. We have tried a WiFi range extender and it just doesn't do the job great. For whatever reason power lines are iffy too in my home and greatly lowers download speed Unfortunately my modem doesnt seem to work in any room other than my parents I'm assuming it's the coax connection but I don't know much So I want to learn as much as possible from here to see if there is a way I can add wiring around the whole home directly from the modem or how I can switch the modem to a more centralized position and it actually working. And to help us have good fast reliable internet for gaming! Any and ALL options you guys have is greatly appreciated because I need all the help and knowledge I can receive [link] [comments] |
Need help with Altice one connection Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:24 PM PST I have altice one and the main box is in my family room on one side of the house. The signal doesn't reach my room so I use a mini box as a range extender so I can play Xbox in my room, however, the internet speed is extremely slow. What would my options be to improve this. Would a different extender be a better option? [link] [comments] |
iPhone does not get data when on home WiFi Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:19 PM PST Hello all, Whenever I try to google my problem, the keywords just point me to trivial things that have no relevance to my problem. So I have a Linksys - AC1750 Dual-Band WiFi 5 Router with an ARRIS - SURFboard 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. I also have a 150Mbps speed with my provider if that matters. So when I'm on my phone(iPhone Xs), just my phone, and I'm on the wireless network, most of the time, I don't get internet, or data. It also happens on other people's phone when they come over and I have to tell them to get off the wireless network, embarassing. When I turn Wifi off, all of a sudden, I get internet/data and things start to work again. So clearly its something with the home network. Has anyone encountered this issue or know anything about it? P.S. I do have multiple wireless devices connected to the router, such as smart home things, computers, tablets, and Tv's. My suspicion would be that there are too many things on the network and the phones get the short end of the stick? I'm not quite sure and that why I'm here. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Devolo 1200+ Powerline adapter VDSL coexistence settings Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:56 PM PST Apparently, there are options to "Improve coexistence with VDSL" for Devolo 1200+ powerline adapters, in the latest Devolo Cockpit software. There are then 3 options to choose from: "VDSL Profile 17a", "VSDL Profile 35b" and "SISO mode". Has anyone tested these settings before and did they improve your VDSL stability or downstream / upstream throughput? I haven't yet brought an adapter to test these options myself. Is there anywhere I can get more information about these settings? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:45 PM PST I am TERRIBLE with networking, please excuse my stupidity in advance. I have a router, PC and a phone. If my PC is connected to the router via ethernet, the PC's ip is 192.168.1.X If my PC is connected to the router via wifi, the PC's ip is 192.168.2.X My phone is always connected to the PC via wifi, so the ip is 192.168.2.X Now here is my issue, when my PC is connected via ethernet, my phone is not able to "talk" to my computer. How do I know this? I have a web server on my PC, set up on port 3000. When the pc and phone are on the same subnet (i am really not sure what to call it tbh, but im basically talking about the third digit in the ip), they can talk to each other normally, I can access the webpage on 192.168.2.66:3000 and I can even ping my pc. When pc and phone are on another subnet, I cannot access the webpage. What the hell am i trying to do? Basically I am a devlopper and I have an android mobile app that should be talking to the server that is obviously hosted on my pc. Can I force my computer to connect to the router via 192.168.2.X on ethernet? Or even better yet make my phone and ALL other devices connect via 192.168.1.X? I would prefer to the second option so that I can access my router login page that is on 192.168.1.1 and I cannot access that when my pc is connected via wifi and is on the 192.168.2.X subnet. Ask as many question as you want, I will happily answer. Please help? And thanks in advance :D [link] [comments] |
Can I use two DHCP servers if the IPs that they give out dont overlap? Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:25 PM PST I have a raspberry pi with pihole on it. Not reaching full speeds over WiFi Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:19 PM PST Hey all! My ISP, Charter Spectrum, recently upgraded our internet speeds from 100/10 to 400/20. I can reach the full 400Mbps down when wired in, but over wireless, I max out at around 200-250Mbps. I have a modem supplied by Spectrum (E31U2V1), an Apple Airport Extreme router with the wireless turned off, a UniFi AC-AP-LR for upstairs, and a UniFi AC-AP-Lite for the basement. These are connected by a TP-Link TL-SG1016PE gigabit switch. I have checked in the UniFi software that the channels my access points are using are not congested. I also have 80Mhz channel width for my 5G band. Any suggestions on how I can get my full 400Mbps over wireless? Is the 200Mbps speeds just a limitation of my access points? Thanks! Do any UniFi switches have modular power supplies? Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:13 PM PST Hi all – I noticed in this teardown that the UniFi 24-port switch has a strange looking, non-modular power supply. It's not an encased unit like I'm used to, but rather a board. Photo here. It's on the left. I can't find the part anywhere. Do any UniFi switches have modular power supplies? Thanks. Looking for recommendations for DD-WRT friendly home mesh networks. Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:10 PM PST Long story short, I've had my RT-AC87U for years, still running AsusWRT-Merlin and it's been brilliant. However demands changes, living space increases etc. etc. and I'm keen to getting a proper mesh network for home use. I really like the TP-link Deco M9 as i recently installed them for a client, partly because of the Zigbee capability as I have a lot of smart home devices that run Zigbee, and partly because it's just a pretty nice package. However I'm also prone to tinkering, and I'm afraid the Deco might be too locked down, I'd prefer to have the option to run something like DD-WRT on it but I've not been keeping an eye on home network solutions much these last few years. Support for IEEE 802.11ax is a plus, but not a requirement. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:43 PM PST Hello, I am currently using USG and new two Ubiquiti APS. 100/10 connection now ( Planning to upgrade to 250/10 in the near future ). I have enabled Smart Queue in USG and speed dropped to 50Mbps because of this. Because of the USG is underpowered , I am thinking of replacing that. Two options in front of me.
I am not sure which path to take. Please provide your comments. EDIT: Service required : VPN Server and Client, IPS/IDS and Smart Queue at 250/10 Mbps [link] [comments] |
Looking for 'Wi-Fi extender' with a LAN port out Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:40 PM PST I will be moving in the next 2 weeks into an apartment where it is WiFi but no LAN box in my apartment. The router is the actual home owners. I can't have physical access to the router. I have a stationary PC and it doesn't support WiFi. I need to connect with a cable. Any products what are relatively cost effective appreciated. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
