    Simple Questions - December 17, 2019

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Thank you all! My girlfriend's first PC as X-MAS gift.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:23 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I just want to share my story. First, i wanna thank u all for help and knowledge i have about pc's and pc building today.

I'm a gamer for over 10 years now, and after i met my girlfriend i introduced her into gaming world. Being a student, her parents bought her laptop because its easier to store and carry around. She was struggling to get 35 FPS in Fortnite. So she spent her free time playing Overwatch or Fortnite on my pc. 5 years later, she graduated as an electronics engineer and started working as developer. She desperately needed new pc.

Because X-mas is coming, with the help of her parents and me, we set her budget around 800 Euros (900 USD). Since we live in Croatia, PC parts cost insane here.

I managed to pick all the parts listed below for 740 Euros (820 USD) with discount and my lurking around.

Original price for these parts from store would cost around 1100 Euros (~1200 USD).

    Here is list:

    • AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor

    • MSI B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard

    • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory

    • MSI GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB GAMING X Video Card

    • ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 256 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

    • Corsair CXM 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

    • Corsair SPEC-DELTA RGB ATX Mid Tower Case

    • Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (I already had)

    • Toshiba HDD 500gb (I already had)

Together with my old keyboard, mouse, headphones and monitor, here is result:

I'm so happy how this build ended :D

    Her smile was priceless :)

Now we are looking for AOC 24G2U as a next upgrade with the money left.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day!

Managed to score a Gigabyte RTX 2070 open box for $355 at Microcenter!

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:17 AM PST

none of my friends are into PC gaming and I really wanted to share. So earlier this month I figured I'd upgrade to 1440p so I grabbed an RX 5700 and I rocked it for about 2 weeks before I had enough of the random almost daily crashes. Went to the store and they happened to have a 2070 at a really good price and now I'm team geforce again. no pics cuz itx case not designed for showing off :(

    Rubbing alcohol on cpu pins

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:40 AM PST

I'm swapping cpus and got a drop of rubbing alcohol on the cpu pins of my old cpu. I won't be using it so I plenty of time to dry it but assuming I dry it out it should be fine right?

Edit: thanks guys. Secondary question, I got a tiny bit of thermal paste on the board next to the socket. Do I need to remove it(non conductive) and if I do how should I go about it?

    M.2 Storage Concern

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:09 AM PST

    Hey guys,

So I've already built my PC but I came a cross something interesting when reading about how M.2 slots work. So M.2 slots to my understanding share PCI-E lanes with the processor and graphics card to where when you install an M.2, it may reduce bandwidth for the GPU. Now this issue becomes even more of a concern with ASrock motherboards like mine that brand an ULTRA M.2 slot that uses PCI-E 3.0 lanes, same as the gpu. I'm wondering if by having my m.2 ssd, installed in the ULTRA M.2, am I bottlenecking my build?

    My MOBO: ASRock fatality X470 Gaming K4 | My cpu: Ryzen 2700 | Gpu: GTX 1070 | M.2: Samsung 970 EVO

My Own PC Build Guides - December 2019

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 07:15 AM PST

I wanted to try and simplify the format this month; make it a lot less wordy. I decided instead of my traditional mass list, I'd treat it like a tier list, starting from C and going to S. This is a bit of a test, so if you have any recommendations or would prefer for me to try something else out, please let me know. Due to the nature of the setup, it does also lack a bit of explanation, so if you need a breakdown on a guide or whatever, again, don't hesitate.

Fast PC can't handle 3440x1440@144Hz gaming? Freeze with audio looping/buzzing, have to power off to reset.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 08:27 AM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

    What is your parts list?
Case: Silverstone SST-RL06WS-PRO White, ATX Mid-Tower
Power Supply: SeaSonic PRIME Ultra Titanium 650W, 80+ Titanium Certified, Fully Modular ATX
CPU: Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12A 60 CFM CPU Cooler
    Motherboard: ASRock Z390 Extreme4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200
Storage: HP EX950 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD (OS, new games), Corsair Force F240GBGT-BK 240GB SSD (old games), WD Caviar Black 1002FAEX 1TB HDD (storage)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 8 GB FTW3 ULTRA GAMING

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

My computer freezes up (hard-lock, have to hold down power to turn off) and audio loops/buzzing during 'heavy' (144fps 3440x1440) gaming workloads in multiple games. e.g. Forza Horizon 4, Path of Exile, Halo: Reach (MCC).

Temperatures look good to my understanding of "under load" temps. 40C in the case, 50C at the CPU core (peaks of 60C), 65-70C at the GPU.

    Things I have tried:

    • GPU: I have a new video card from EVGA after doing an RMA and I still encounter the same crashes. I went through extensive testing with EVGA support prior to receiving a new card (multiple driver versions using Display Drive Uninstaller (DDU) to clean up, Nvidia debug mode on/off, etc.)
    • RAM: I have run 8 passes of Memtest86 without any errors. I ran Karhu RAM Test overnight last night for nearly 9h, 14522% coverage, no errors. I have tested gaming with each RAM stick individually.
    • PSU: The 12V rail in HWMonitor is rock solid at 12.000V when not gaming. While gaming it will fluctuate (infrequently) between a min/max of 11.904/12.096V.

    Previous thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/e6c70t/computer_crashing_freeze_hard_lockup_with_new/

If you've read this far, thank you. I really appreciate any ideas anyone might have about this situation.

EDIT: I am not doing any additional overclocking! The GPU is factory-overclocked by EVGA. The RAM is running an XMP profile that matches its stock latency and clock (but is still "XMP-enabled", so not the spec clockrate for the CPU). EDIT 2: After discovering my own stupidity, XMP is properly enabled now.

    980 ti strix- next step?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:13 PM PST

Back in 2014, I spent close to 1400 USD on 2 Asus 980 ti strix GPUs that I currently run in SLI. They perform absolutely great at 1080, but can't quite make the jump to 4K

I just got done buying everything I need to bring me into the DDR4 world. New processor, new mobo, new ram, new PSU, etc. Full Asus ROG build.

I plan on keeping these 980s in place for a bit, but was wondering what a good replacement may be these days. The 980s have 6gb gddr5. Any thoughts or helpful tips are appreciated!

Intel 6700 processor pulled from Dell

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:32 PM PST

    2 questions if I may

Can it be moved to a new motherboard with no issue?

How can I tell if it has a k or t "tag" so if I know if it is unlocked?

I looked on Dell's site under their service tag it has no indication on if it is unlockable

    Thanks.

Quick edit. It is a I7.

    CPU upgrade at 3440 x 1440?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:24 PM PST

Hello, I am currently running an i7 4790k with 1333mhz 16gb ram and an rtx 2080.

I am strongly considering upgrading to a ryzen 3700x with 16gb 3600mhz ram.

Have noticed cpu limiting in some games such as r6s or bf5 and ac odyssey

Also planning on possibly downgrading to a 1440p 144hz monitor when I go to college so cpu will become more of a factor.

If anyone has experience with an upgrade like this and has/hasn't seen improvements let me know? Or even if you haven't done an upgrade do you guys think it's worth it?

GTX 1070 vs GTX 1660 Ti

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:37 PM PST

I had a video card fail in my son's computer, and after some effort in trying to repair it I've opted to buy a replacement computer.

Honestly the actual plan is to just give him my 3 year old computer. However, before I turn things over I wanted to confirm which video card was better. The GTX 1070, or the GTX 1660 Ti?

In googling benchmarks it seems as though the 1070 is better, though the 1660 Ti is newer.

Long term I plan to get a VR system, so whichever is better for that helps as well.

CPU voltage suddenly not enough after rebuild?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:00 PM PST

So I have a Ryzen 2400G that I setup with a small overclock of 3.7 GHz on 1.3v. I was able to play games and do work without encountering a single BSOD for a long time.

But a few days ago I decided to replace the cheap case I got, with a case that has better airflow. After putting back together my PC on that new case, I immediately encountered an issue, when my B450 mortar indicated a CPU error. I shut it down and cleared CMOS, then increased the voltage to 1.3125.

PC boots no problem, but when I started playing a game, I got a BSOD and a CPU error once more. Cleared CMOS again and left everything at default. Now things are working fine for a day now. I just find it weird that my overclocking with 1.3v does not work anymore. I was just wondering did the re-assembly of my PC triggered this? The only change I've made is add two new RGB fans, but I doubt those can have an effect on my CPUs voltage.

    5700 xt or 2070?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:22 PM PST

    Hi guys!

All I have left to purchase is my GPU, what do you guy reckon, I have spending limit of €450 ~ £375. I know the 5700 XT preforms overall slightly better than the 2070 however I've heard there to be issues with team red such as crashing. What should be the choice?

    A weekend , no experience , a Build.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:28 PM PST

Hi guys , former console peasant here ! ( sic)

So a little ... thing happened over the weekend. I had an epiphany and started furiously ordering parts online to build a pc , now mind you I had never built a pc nor had any previous experience fondling the innards of any machine ... it just happened.

So I wanted to present to you my beauty, my queen , I even went as far as to do cable management and the whole shabang, I was ecstatic and barely slept. It was a rough couple of days for me trying to understand how the whole thing worked and so I had to come here at least a dozen time a day for guidance. I learned a lot and so I wanted to thank each and every one of you, lurker or poster for being a part of this subreddit and giving the opportunity to people that have no previous knowledge on PC building to actually acquire this competence and make it happen.

Here are photos of the beast :

    https://imgur.com/a/e6VwSgq

If you want to know more about the pc :

    MOBO: AORUS Z390 PRO-WIFI

CPU : Intel I5 9600KF not yet oc

GPU : ASUS ROG STRIC 2060 GAMING OC

    MEMORY : G=SKILL NEO DDR4 3200Mhz

    M.2 SSD : KINGSTON A200 500go

    HDD : SEAGATE BARRACUDA 2To

    AIO: CORSAIR H110I Platinium

    FANS : Corsair LL120 BLACK & WHITE

It litteraly creates fps out of a hole in the spacetime fabric I swear i had never seen >30 fps before and now I'm living that sweet 144hz life.

    Thanks again. <3

TL;DR : I did not know how to build a pc at all and managed to pull it off in 2 days thanks to this sub so here's a thank you and photos of my rig.

Ok - need help with PSU connections

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:49 PM PST

First time builder here. I'm in the process of hooking up PSU. I have a Seasonic prime ultra gold PSU. It's pretty self explanatory where the 18 + 10 pin goes since it's clearly labeled M/B on the back of PSU and there is only one spot for that to be plugged in.

But, now I need help figuring out what to do with the five different 8 pin connectors on the back of PSU. All five of them are labeled CPU/PCI-E. For example, which one of the five CPU/PCI-E ports would I plug the 8 pin cpu cable into? The manual isn't clear. Are all of the 8 pin CPU/PCI-E ports interchangeable??

I plan to make my first pilgrimage to a Micro Center in the next few weeks. I'd like to put something together like the below build, making subs if there are good deals at the store.

Looking for any advice on whether the below build seems a reasonable base shopping list.

I'm about to build a CPU for music production (mainly) but have questions about latency and GPUs. PLEASE HELP!

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:29 PM PST

I am a 10-year Mac user who can´t really afford a 16 inch Macbook Pro and whose 2010 Macbook Pro just died. So... I need a new computer and thought of building a PC. (Always wanted to do it)
I'll use it mainly to record music, produce short film scores using Kontakt libraries and other instruments like Omnisphere 2, Absynth, Superior Drummer 3 and the like.
I also plan to upload some film scoring and film sound recording tutorials within the next year so I'll need to edit video.

I have done some reading and have seen positive things about Ryzen 7, Ryzen 9 and Intel i7 8700 CPUs but I have some questions:

    1. Which of those can give the lowest audio latency? I need to have a buffer size of 32 (64 at most) when recording and scoring.
    2. I'm pretty much in over my head with the GPU side of things: Radeon 570? GTX 1650? GTX 1660? 4 gb? 6 gb? Pheww... I sincerely dont know what I need.
    3. I understand the price difference between the 3 CPUs I mentioned above but if the performance and latency IS better I would certainly make the investment. (However If, for example, the Ryzen 7 2700x can give me the performance I need I would prefer to go that route because I also need to get a new audio interface.
    4. Also, I understand motherboards are important to get great performance. Any info in the matter would help a lot, too!

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. PartS list, links to useful literature, videos, anything.... I NEED A NEW COMPUTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

    Any recommendations to switch out?

    My new build isn't posting

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:06 PM PST

Hi, I'm rebuilding my pc and it won't post or display anything on my monitor. I've got a Ryzen 3600x and an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max. When I turn on the PC the DRAM debug light comes on, but if I plug in my GPU and SSDs the DRAM light goes off and the CPU light comes on instead. I've tried flashing the bios multiple times on 2 different USB sticks. The cpu had 2 bent pins when I got it that have since been set straight so it could be seated properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Rx 580 being weird

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:51 PM PST

So i recently got a new gpu, installed the software etc. I plugged my dvi cable into the gpu too. But when i start up most games it dosent seem to be working. Even weirder, in an emulator i had the option to choose a video card, and when i chose my new gpu performance was drastically increased. Any advice or anything else i can elaborate on?

    Computer was Freezing Randomly.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:46 AM PST

This post might sound a bit stupid because i resolved the issue but it was an issue that did plague my pizza for a while.

My computer just freezes randomly, no BSOD or anything and when it does it just makes a weird sound through the speakers as well. this did occur more often times when i was gaming though it did happen even though i wasn't gaming.

At first it happened rarely but then it became more re-occuring.

I suspected Overheating of either CPU or GPU, however temps were fine and it was occuring more frequently even though the temperatures were cooling down as it was approaching winter.

Though i could find nothing through my Regular troubleshooting found out nothing until my friend told me it could be my PSU, which is a possibility since it was a cheap one i used when i built it in 2015

Specs as of the time built

    RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GB 1600mhz

    CPU: FX-8350

    Motherboard: gigabyte 990FXA-UD3

    Storage: Seagate barracuda 2TB

Graphics card: Gigabyte HD7950 (which later then replaced with a 7970 3 years later)

    Power Supply: thermaltake litepower 700w

I then swapped out my Power supply for a EVGA 700GD 700W which then after i had no further issues

Moral of the story? It could be a shite psu. thought i would post this somewhere to see if it could help anyone else. in the future.

Do I need to connect all the EPS ports on my Mobo?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:27 PM PST

I am currently about to build a PC. All the parts have already arrived but I'm waiting until this friday to build the PC. The motherboard that I purchased is the ASUS ROG Strix X570-E motherboard ( https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-ROG-Motherboard-Lighting-Heatsinks/dp/B07SW8DQVL/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=x570e&qid=1576621108&sr=8-1 ). I also bought the be quiet! 600w pure power 10 CM PSU. It only has an 8-pin EPS cable but the motherboard has an 8-pin and a 4-pin socket/port. Is it ok if don't connect anything to the 4-pin port? The processor I plan on using is the R5 3600.

How can I get original AC power for EVGA 1000W Power Supply

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:21 PM PST

Most recommend I get the EVGA cable to replace the lost cable. What should I do make sure it's correct. Not sure who/where I should contact?
