Some of these settings are hidden or managed by your organization

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:03 PM PST

Hello everyone, today I decided to do a clean install on my computer because it was long overdue. I found the price of a new Windows 10 key way too much, and I did not want to go down the Ebay route. I found out that as a student I can get Windows 10 Education. I do not know if this is related to my issue, it does sound like it is, however further research suggests that the Education version of Windows has no restrictions except a watermark that they already scraped with an update.

I don't want to make this post too long so my problem is that certain windows in the control panel give me the 'Some of these settings are hidden or managed by your organization' message, and some settings are greyed out. I have reinstalled Windows 10 a few times and I don't think I have done anything differently this time around, except used the key that I obtained through my student status. Any ideas? It's driving me crazy, to the point where I'm thinking about re-activating with a dodgy Ebay key.

Windows 10 Audio Driver Bass Boost Has Gotten Weaker?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:27 PM PST

I updated my PC to Win 10 1909 after having missed updates for a few months and I noticed something different. Windows switched my audio driver from the default Windows one to the Realtek. I straightaway uninstalled Realtek and went back to default one however I noticed that the bass boost option (only reason I use it) is much weaker. I usually have it at 80hz and 24db but it doesn't have the same oomph it had before the update.

Anyone else notice this? Are there any other ways to bass boost on Windows/Chrome?

Bitlocker - Back up recovery key to Microsoft account?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 07:05 PM PST

So I decided to try to be "safe" from big brother, and although bitlocker probably isnt very trustworthy (since Microsoft has been known to happily cooperate with various agencies in the past), I guess its better than nothing and at least it does not slow down your computer the way veracrypt supposedly does.

So when I turned on bitlocker, it asked me how I wanted to backup my recovery key, and I have no idea what option to chose since neither sound very safe. I thought I was supposed to set a password of my own.

If I save my key to my microsoft account, doesnt that mean that if someone can access my microsoft account, then my key will be compromised? For example, my other computers and my phone are also logged in to my microsoft account and can access my onedrive etc. Lets say that all someone enters my home and steals all of these computers and my phone, wont they be able to access the bitlocker key from the other computers that can access my onedrive by default?

I dont really understand exactly what "save to your microsoft account" means and it would be great if someone could explain it to me.

    Thanks

MS Office shortcuts with gaming mouse buttons

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:16 PM PST

I am looking to buy a gaming mouse for the office in order to make use of the programmable buttons on such mice.

I am looking at the Logitech G402 - I currently have the G502 and from the Logitech G Hub app I can add various shortcuts to the programmable buttons (e.g. volume control, DPI, copy/paste). However, I am unable to add specific MS Office shortcuts. For example, I want to be able to create a new Outlook email / calendar invite with a single button click.

    Is this possible?

    Thanks.

How do you handle versioned portable app folders in terms of PATH linking and future updates?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:09 PM PST

When dealing with portable binaries that come in versioned folders, whose locations you want to add in your PATH environment variable: how do you approach the following example scenario?

You just downloaded and extracted `ffmpeg-4.2.1-win64-static`.

    Do you ...

    1) RENAME the versioned folder before moving it to where you want, e.g. `C:\Portable\CLI\bin\ffmpeg`, then add a link to the *version-stripped* folder in your PATH variable.

    ... or ...

    2) KEEP the folder name (as-is) and move it to where you want, e.g. `C:\Portable\CLI\bin\ffmpeg\ffmpeg-4.2.1-win64-static`, then add the *versioned* folder in your PATH (necessitating the risk of frequent edits to the location in your PATH).

Question becomes relevant when it comes to updating the software. I find this to be a MAJOR pain in the butt when it comes to portable apps. Any workflow advice desperately appreciated!

Windows still showing old user folder name

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:31 PM PST

So the place I bought my PC from skipped the OOBE and made the user "user". I went into the registry about yesterday and changed everything from C:\Users\user to C:\Users\Skylar which is my name. I still keep seeing things saying user in the path and I thought it was just old apps showing user because they were downloaded when the user profile was still user. So I made a shortcut of something random and it still shows user. Anyone have any way to fix this?

    Windows 7

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:27 AM PST

Is it still worth installing Windows 7 on my PC? My machine is medium-end and runs Windows 10. Yet, it is still unstable with games being laggy for some reason. I have even adjusted it for games. I am already aware that Windows 7 will not be supported in January 2020. Still, do you guys think it is okay having it again. If so, how can I download the most stable version of it :D? Thanks in advance!

    Batch scripting - goto command

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:27 AM PST

So I'm fairly new to writing batch files, and when I write the typical [y/n] choice and set the variable to say the text I want and all, it seems that if I answer N to this prompt, the script is always closed. What would I set the goto command as to keep the script running after answering "No" on one of these prompts?

    removed windows boot manager

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:32 AM PST

So yesterday i've bought second hand laptop fujitsu livebook s792 and today i tried to install windows 10 on it (prevously had windows 7)Got my bootable pendrive that used to work on another laptop.Installed windows on hard drive but after files moved from pendrive i cannot boot from that hdd to continue installation. I assume thats probably because boot menu in bios is missing "windows boot manager" option. I was sure that would install itself with windows 10 installation but it just wont.Trying to boot manually from hdd doesnt do anything and returns me to selecting boot option.

I searched internet for about 4 hours but nothing helped me. Helpless decided to post there and look for help since my problem is kinda specific i guess...Thanks for help in advance.

Bluetooth headset not working on microsoft store games.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:32 AM PST

Every time I try to play a game from the microsoft store, the audio on my headset works for a few minutes then completely cuts and i have to reconnect my headset. It only does this with games from the microsoft store. I've tried just about everything I could think of but nothing seems to be working. If it matters, I am using the Bose QC 35 II headset.

Are there limits on RAM and CPU Cores for Windows 10 Education?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:27 AM PST

I work in a large educational organization in a department that has unique computing needs. Our IT dept usually buys the PCs for everyone else, but I was tasked with configuring and purchasing the new machines for our department since the IT dept always sticks everyone with the same basic Dell machines.

We tend to need more RAM and a better processor on each workstation as we do more intensive computing. For this reason, I configured Dell Precision workstations with an Intel i9 9900 8-core cpu with 32GB of RAM with room for more storage and RAM to leave the door open for more upgrades. Our IT contact said that our version of windows will only utilize 16GB of RAM and that these machines might not work on our network with regards to group policy and such.

I did a bit of googling and found that Windows 10 Education (which is the version of windows we use) has a much higher limitation as far as RAM and number of CPU Cores.

I'd really appreciate r/windows's help on this as the IT dept is definitely ready to jump on us and say "we told you so" if anything goes wrong. I don't want to look like an idiot within my department because we are spending a fortune buying 13 new PCs.

What issues will I face with regards to these new machines?

Will there in fact be compatibility issues with Windows 10 Education running on 32GB RAM with an 8-core i9?

Will there be networking issues with the built in network card? Should I consider any alternatives?

Anyone on r/windows have any extra advice?

    Thanks in advance.

Edit: Will there be any backwards compatibility issues with 32-bit software/drivers?

Devices not showing up in my Windows Account

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 08:16 AM PST

    Hey everybody,

so yesterday I wanted to download a game from the windows store but was informed that no appropriate device was connected to the account. After looking into the account page I found that my desktop pc, which I have connected my microsoft account to, is not showing up. I then tried to test this on my laptop which is connected to another seperate account only to find that the laptop is not shown as well.

Both my laptop and my desktop pc run Windows 8.1 Enterprise. I use my two windows accounts for the login and they are connected in the account section of the windows settings. In addition I have created a completely new windows account for test purposes and used it for a new user on my desktop pc. This unfortunately resulted in the same problem as my other two accounts.

Does anyone know how to deal with this issue and how to make both devices show up on the windows account? Help would be greately appreciated.

    Automatic Repair Help

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:15 AM PST

Hey guys, My laptop has a serious problem. One day, I booted it up to find it went into automatic repair. I let it work, only to find that "automatic repair could not fix your PC" message.

I tried every option, all of them have an error of some sort. ->Reset this PC : Says that the reset could not be done. ->System Restore : I don't have any system recovery points. ->Revert to old version : Says I have less disk space. ->Startup Repair : Brings me to a similar screen as mentioned in the beginning. ->CMD : Tried a few commands, doesn't work ->UEFI firmware settings : I don't know how to use it.

If there's any way for me to keep my files and have my laptop in a working state, please mention it in the comments.

Keep script running in powershell window after I am kicked off of my network

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 05:49 AM PST

I have a process that needs to run for like a week in powershell. It requires periodic input from me. My login gets terminated each time my VPN connection times out, it seemingly stops the script and kills my powershell window when this happens. Is there any good way to keep that window open and the script running?

    Arp Scanning on XP

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:16 PM PST

I've been tasked with running an arp scan on a list of addresses in order to weed out the unused addresses for a portscan. The easy way seems to be to use the cmd arp program, but I am a bit out of my element and don't understand what I'm doing with it. So feel free to encourage me down a different path. What's the best way of accomplishing an arp scan with software natively on windows?
