    Screen Saver: Underutilized feature?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:17 PM PST

I remember when the Nexus 4 first came out and they showed off screensavers on the wireless charger. It looked cool, but ever since that moment, I've hardly seen the screen saver feature used in Android.

I feel like this is a potential that has not been used. Maybe people just don't care? Always on Display and showing the time and notification icons is nice, but why not allow my phone to show other things? For instance a news app could be used to flash news stories/headlines or anything of interest to you. A sports app could flash a sports ticker, etc.

I also remember there was this Aerial app that had the Apple TV screensavers and that app was mainly for setting wallpapers--but if you really want to copy Apple TV, why not set them as a screen saver? I believe that app since has pulled all the Apple TV videos probably due to a C&D or whatever, but the point remains--whatever live scenes they have could make for a nice screen saver.

What are your thoughts /r/android? Is this an underutilized feature?

For those of you who don't now what I'm talking about, the feature is located in Settings > Display > Screen Saver

LG V20 Long Term Review || So much potential; some niggles, still unique and fun

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 01:33 AM PST

I've used my LG V20 for over two years now, and I thought I'd share my thoughts about my specimen, and opinions on LG's approach.

    GSMARENA SPEC SHEET

This is a rather unique phone, the last flagship phone with:

    1. An IR Blaster

    2. Removable battery

    Among the first to have:-

    1. A wide angle camera

    2. Android Nougat

    Other unique features:

    1. A Quad DAC

    2. A Second Screen

    3. Good manual controls on photo/video creation, and good audio recording

So I knew all this when I bought the phone and was quite excited about the prospect of all these features. However some of these were a hit and a miss. For convenience I'll share thoughts and ratings in a tabular manner.

    PROS:

    n Pro Description (/10)
[+1] Camera, wide angle, audio I guess the first phone with a WA camera, which is the primary reason I bought it. Good primary cam, ok ultrawide, below par (but usefully WA) front cam. The manual controls are quite useful, especially if LG's default processing is not to your taste. The quality of both is improved in many cases by Gcam. Video recording is good, with high quality and high DR audio input. Today's phones though, would outstrip this in all departments, especially speed of operation. 8
[+2] Second screen Physically kinda similar to a notch, but functionally similar to a taskbar/quicklaunch/speed dial etc. A feature I highly appreciate after years of using it. Another niche offering, that I hope other phones include 8
[+3] Quad DAC A feature of most of LG phones, especially the V series. I'm not quite an audiophile but it sounds good to me, better than others with good earphones. Yet another niche offering. The on device speakers could be louder, but this feature stands the test of time. 9
[+4] 3.5mm Jack, IR blaster Rather handy features to have. The IR blaster is great for private and public TVs, I've had some fun with it. I needn't say much about the jack on this sub anyway, except for the fact that if you have a Quad DAC, you'd better have a 3.5mm jack to utilize its quality. 10
[+5] Disassembable / Construction As all phones should be. I like the fact that I can replace not just the battery but also easily replace the cameras, or the thermal paste on this phone. Other than that it's a strongly made phone that survives impact well, except for minor problems like rear camera glass which can be replaced for like $3-5. 8.5

    CONS:

    n Con Description (/10)
[-1] Lag, slow UI The UI is super slow, even with a snapdragon 820, it's slower than my dad's SD625 powered Moto G5 plus, to say nothing of similarly priced competitors from Oneplus. Crappy OS-hardware optimization. This is by far my biggest gripe, since you feel it every second of like six hours a day I use the phone for. A flagship phone should NOT lag this bad. 4
[-2] Battery life Sh!tty, again due to Crappy OS-hardware optimization. This is alleviated substantially by replaceable batteries for the V20, although the poorly optimized chip still voraciously eats through batteries, unless you're prepared to make your phone an inch thick brick with one of those 8400mAh batteries. If you don't mind a larger battery, then this issue turns into a pro for you. On Lineage OS with some kernels, you can also hot swap batteries, where you needn't turn off the phone if you disconnect the battery while charging the phone. 6
[-3] LG Skin Not as heavy as Samsung's old UI, but not even close to as good as OnePlus, One UI or Nokia's almost stock UI. Again not an issue in my case since I use Nova launcher. 5
[-4] Updates Yeah, they happen years after Oneplus, Google or Nokia devices gets theirs, and they don't really improve the shitty software experience. I started on Nougat, and I'm still on Oreo. 4
[-5] Thermal paste So it throttles since LG cut corners while applying their paste. Although replacing the paste (it's good that you can do that) helps a little, but it doesn't fix it completely. Such corner cutting is what led to the infamous LG bootloops. 5
[-6] Inadequate Custom ROMS Since LG hasn't released cam/second screen/DAC drivers, most ROMs are either stock based and similarly slow, or the ones that are fast break a number of features, like no stock cam, sub-par second screen support, and glitches that make them a non seamless experience. Given that it isn't a very popular phone I would expect fewer custom ROMs than my Nexus 4, but it's almost like LG bent over backwards to prevent people from playing around with this enthusiast phone, to prevent other devs from fixing problems their own devs overlooked. 4

    MEHs:

    n Meh Description (/10)
[=1] Screen While I like the large size (which seems to be an unpopular opinion on this sub), and the second screen, I'd have preferred a Samsung AMOLED. This also contributes to the battery consumption a bit. 7

    .

    Bottomline:

So for a phone of today, I think this is kinda outdated. If the pros are more important to you then you can get one for ~$90 on Swappa (the phone was originally a flagship that cost $700-900, but in typical LG fashion that number came down pretty soon), but be prepared for a frustrating, bittersweet experience.

APPEAL TO LG: If only LG had released drivers for the Cam, second screen, DAC, almost all issues would've been sorted, thanks to LOS/RR Roms, and once bitten users like me would've flocked back to LG as apostles. But it's a pity LG chose to go the ultra closed sourced route, and delivered an experience much worse than what I'd anticipated when I bought the device. All of the pros, I knew before I bought the phone, it's just that so many cons popped up post purchase. At this point it's more of an overpromised and underdelivered deal for me.

Good hardware, really shitty software, and some corners cut.
