    Shutting computer down properly?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:12 AM PST

    Hi,

what is the proper way to shut down a pc? I use a wm, so there is no menu really, so I just run shutdown now in the terminal. But this is very abrupt, and I suspect that this is not the proper way to turn off the pc? So what is the proper way to do this? (Using a distro with systemd if that's relevant)

    An executable wont launch

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 07:07 AM PST

I downloaded this game and it wont launch. As you can see here, this file should be able to run but there is a weird message underneath. When I double click on it, nothing happens. I am using Debian 10.

One more thing. Is there a way to install latest python on debian 10? Currently python 2.7.16 is installed.

GUI Mailclient that can be configured to work with mbsync?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 01:32 PM PST

Anyone knows or can recommend a Mailclient that can be configured to read the maildirs created by mbsync? If it is possible to use msmtp or something similar, for sending emails, together with some rules to chose the account it would be ideal.

Currently i am using neomutt and I want to still use it, however sometimes it would be nice to have GUI...

CUPS not configured correctly, it seems (armbian + Brother HL-2270DW)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:51 AM PST

Linux noob, CUPS ultra-noob here. I installed CUPS with the armbian-config utility, which appears to do apt-get -y install cups lpr cups-filters

Added my user account to lpadmin group

In CUPS web interface I select my wireless printer; there are no Brother drivers listed, but it says "or select a PPD file" so I used the HL-1660e PPD from openprinters.org which is said to work perfectly with my HL-2270DW. But when I try to print a test page from CUPS, I get "Unable to locate printer "BRN30055C070BA1.local"."

I suspect that I am missing a step of installing or specifying a printer driver, but CUPS web interface suggests that PPD is an alternative for a driver and I can find no noob-friendly instructions suggesting otherwise.

Brother provides proprietary linux lpr and cups-wrapper drivers for this printer; they are described as being for i386 architecture (my device is arm) but I've seen comments claiming that there is no architecture-specific code in these drivers. I've not tried anything with them.

    Locking the screen properly?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:10 AM PST

    Hi,

I use betterlockscreen to lock the screen. I made a keybind in sxhkd to execute it with a simple keyboard shotcut. But I also want to not only lock the screen, but also put the pc to sleep. So I wrote this into the sxhkd config file:

    super + shift + l

    betterlockscreen - l dim

    systemctl suspend

but when I execute the shortcut, then betterlockscreen executes properly, but the pc is not put to sleep. What could be the problem here?

Where can I find the standard C libraries in centos 7?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:37 AM PST

For a lab i'm doing I was asked to run this command:

    nm /lib/libc.so.6 | grep ' T ' | cut -f3 -d' ' | grep -v '^_' | sort -u | less

    libc.so.6 didn't exist in /lib, but I did find it in /lib64

When I replace /lib//libc.so.6 with /lib64/libc.so.6 in this command it gave me a massive list of C libraries. How Do I just see the standard C libraries?

Ubuntu: System doesn't boot into GUI anymore

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:48 AM PST

    Distribution:
Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS (maybe with Gnome 3.28.2 or maybe I accidentally uninstalled it. I'm not sure.)

    Problem:
I always boot into a command line or something instead of into a Graphical User Interface like Gnome.

    How did I get here:

    1. I installed kde-full using sudo apt-get install kde-full
    2. I tried uninstalling kde-full again using sudo apt-get uninstall kde-full
    3. It returned an error in which it said that I should try apt-get autoremove
    4. I use sudo apt-get autoremove
    5. I reboot my machine

Notes (maybe some of them are helpful, maybe they aren't):
I had a similar issue once before on a virtual device. Back then I was told that this "command line" is the X-Server or at least part of the X-Server (but I don't know if this is correct). To fix that problem I was told to completely reinstall the OS. There it wasn't much of a problem because I had no important files in there and in general didn't really have anything to lose. This time it's different because I don't want to lose all of the data.

    Dropbox alternatives with universal package?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 07:07 AM PST

I'm enjoying Solus a bunch but debs and rpms aren't supported for it. Both a curse and a blessing - in this case it's a curse.

I have moved away from Dropbox as their smallest "tier" is what, 2TB for ~100€ annually. My largest drive is 500GB and I have not even come close to 250GB of data.

Found Mega.nz which was fine until I moved over to Solus. Asked the Solus folks on how to go about getting Mega client running and was recommended multiple solutions, one of which is running the Windows client through Wine, works great I suppose but it's constantly occupying ~120-160MB of RAM. Not sure how much the native client draws but it makes me curious if there's some smaller player out there that offer an app image, flatpak or snap?

    • Dropbox - too expensive for the use case
    • Mega - only debs rpms or compile yourself
    • pCloud - only debs rpms
    • SpiderOak - only debs rpms

What other players are out there? Is there really none who have a app image, flatpak or snap?

Edit: https://cozy.io/en/ - have an app image but if I understand them correctly it's either free 5GB, inexpensive 50GB and the next step after that is 1000GB..

    Did I setup Thinkfan properly?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:58 AM PST

Hey guys, I just tried to setup my Thinkfan configuration on my T490 running Pop_OS. I followed this tutorial. I just wanted to double-check, if everything there is legit and that I didn't screw up my system with what I did. Thanks in advance :-) Edit: I didn't activate fan control yet, and I'm unsure what I would need to add to my thinkpad_acpi since I haven't found anything specific for my T490 yet. I'd be glad if anyone could help me out :-)

    Add Icons to Icon Pack

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 05:06 AM PST

I apologise in advance if it's a stupid question, but here it goes.

There's this icon pack I really like, Xenlism Wildfire. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the icons for some of the apps I use.

Is there an easy way for me to create the missing icons in the same exact style? Bearing in mind I know nothing about Photoshop and the like. I tried using some online icon editors for dummies, but the results were crap!

    Thanks!

Sound issues on some games (crackling, echo and latency)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 04:29 AM PST

    Hi guys !

I didn't play to some games for a while (CSGO, Half Life 2 and Life is Strange) and recently I wanted to play again. Everything worked fine before, but now I have some issues:

HALF-LIFE 2 : The sound itself is normal but I notice a latency (1 sec or less I'd say, it's short but still perceptible and thus annoying)

CSGO: The sound is crackling and totally weird. Click to listen: https://voca.ro/eOjH2AS3FRY

LIFE IS STRANGE: The sound is also crackling (not as much as on CSGO though) and it looks like I got an echo

    Click to listen : https://voca.ro/hNqhrFJkndX

Besides them, everyting works fine (internet and local movies and music, other games).

    Here some infos:

pacmd list-sinks | grep latency current latency: 171,29 ms fixed latency: 170,67 ms analog-output-speaker: Haut-parleurs (priority 10000, latency offset 0 usec, available: no) analog-output-headphones: Casque audio (priority 9000, latency offset 0 usec, available: yes)
