Posted: 24 Nov 2019 07:35 AM PST So, this is a old 32 bit computer- it has Windows 10 on it. So yeah, MBR...It had a bad copy of Windows 7 on it which was in FRONT of the partition where 10 is- and was in dual boot configuration. I went ahead and removed 7 so the computer had about 50 gigs of free space in that section(and 10 would boot fine, it was simply no longer dual boot), then put Debian on a CD and am here going through the installation process- started installing Debian Netinstall CD style- And when i had finished- it only had a black screen. Where did I do wrong? I AM trying to make this a dual boot again - and the setup I have tried (see attachment) is two logical partitions from the free space, and i made one ext4 and the other swap- and then did the option to install the grub boot loader in the master boot record (after it detected the other operating system, "windows vista" - i read online that it sees a lot of as Vista and to ignore this) it finished the install- restarted(and I took the cd out) and when it restarted, aside from the normal Pentium D screen(with a press F2 to go to the bios) - ater that, nothing but a black screen and blinking white cursor come up ....What did I do wrong? Can you not put linux in front of windows on the drive? Or is it grub? This is my first time installing the grub bootloader, is there another way to set this dual boot system up? https://i.postimg.cc/8PmjYg7q/IMG-20191124-102121.jpg UPDATE: I put the CD back in,and it finally booted up! I clicked rescue mode, got back to the Debian installer main menu- thankfully I also see the enter rescue mode option - if i press that , then (if i've got this right)- at the menu where it says to select a device you wish to use as your root file system, to choose various rescue operations to perform- i see /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 ,etc- and since this is on logical partition 5, if i select /dev/sda5 I then have options

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:02 AM PST So i have this computer with 4 gigs of ram, intel i3 and 1 TB disk. Windows has lately been very annoying dew to lag and all sorts o stuff which include freezing for no reason, lagging and the operating system itself using half of the ram. So i want to switch to linux I do have some experience in linux (wsl), and do know the basics so i guess i will be able to get my way around the OS. I think linux mint will be the way to go because I have been using windows my whole life and the switch will be hard. Also, i will need windows in as a dual boot or something because I am not the only person who uses this computer. What i need from u :- 1.which distro to use 2.how to install linux (useful links or videos) 3.will the switch be worth it? 4.how much disk space will the linux partition take? 5.How much disk does linux need? 6.Any risks of softbricking my computer (i have done it in the past and to scared to even update windows) 7.anything i have missed out and should know feel free to ask questions. Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:45 AM PST Is anyone aware of a tutorial where I can view the content and they also have a simulated Linux environment? I can read and watch the material all day long, but without being able to practice at the same time I feel my time might be wasted. I have a desktop and one very old tablet. My laptop is deceased. Thanks for any input. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Nov 2019 01:02 PM PST I'm trying to stream movies from a Linux machine out to another machine set out in my entertainment room. As it stands, I can do this with Windows 7/10 currently, but whenever I try to use a machine with Pop-os I can access the share, but whenever I try to open something, it is really slow. I've modified the global section of my smb.conf with this fix that I've seen around on various boards, but it has no effect. I have restarted the service. Any ideas guys? [link] [comments] |
Will RandR work for my application? Two projectors rotated 180 degrees from each other. Posted: 24 Nov 2019 10:35 AM PST I want to display the Ubuntu desktop onto a table from two projectors. The projectors would be mounted overhead, above opposite edges of the table, rotated 180 degrees from each other. The intention is to reduce shadow issues from arms, etc. over the table. Would RandR allow me to duplicate the desktop on both projectors, while rotating one desktop 180 degrees, so the images could be aligned? Thank you for any help you may be able to provide. Posted: 23 Nov 2019 03:45 PM PST Been running Windows 7 since it came out, since I grew up on Windows. I'm an avid gamer, & tech savvy. My upgraded gaming hardware won't support Windows 7, and with Windows not even supporting 7 any more, I figure it's time to leave windows behind. What should I expect as a gamer switching to Linux? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:16 AM PST The linux installer does not see any devices/partitions/drives besides the USB drive that I have my iso on to install. How do I fix this? I tried to install 2 different versions and long story short I think I bugged it. Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:43 AM PST Here's the terminal when I try to install the staging branch: phonsy@Satyriasis:~$ sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-staging Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these. The following packages have unmet dependencies: dxvk-wine64-development : Depends: libwine-development but it is not going to be installed winehq-stable : Conflicts: wine Conflicts: wine-amd64 Conflicts: wine-i386 winehq-staging : Depends: wine-staging (= 4.20~bionic) Conflicts: wine Conflicts: wine-amd64 Conflicts: wine-i386 E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution). And at the same time I am getting this issue: Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems.Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f Transaction failed: The package system is broken The following packages have unmet dependencies: dxvk-wine64-development: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.27) but 2.27-3ubuntu1 is installed Depends: libgcc1 (>= 1:3.0) but 1:8.3.0-6ubuntu1~18.04.1 is installed Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 7) but 8.3.0-6ubuntu1~18.04.1 is installed Depends: libwine-development but it is not installed Is it even possible to fix this? I'm a total newb and I just realized linux isn't retard proof like windows is. And I mean I can always reinstall the OS but is that necessary? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:25 AM PST Hello everyone. I'm a first year IT student at university. I need a new laptop for uni and I would like to run Linux on it as well to learn bash and how the os works. I've been reading on which laptops are the best for this goal and the most popular opinions were the Dell XPS and lenovo ThinkPad. I have a desktop at home so I need something I can carry everyday. I really like the design of the xps especially the bezels. The 2 in 1 version seems even better since it has 16:10 resolution. My only worry is that many people are complaining about the coil whine which is why I'm on the fence on this laptop. Otherwise the 2 in 1 would be perfect for me. Do you have any experience with the laptop? Or any other xps 13 models? Thanks for the help in advance and all help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
What is the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition that runs on Linux? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 01:43 PM PST Maybe the correct question is, what exactly is Linux? There is a good deal on this particular laptop and I am looking for one but I have never used Linux. I've always used Windows. Are they similar? Are there any limitations on Linux compared to Windows? I use Steam to play casual games, as well as some League of Legends or Sims. But I've heard that Linux can't run certain games or certain programs which worries me. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am a complete noob to Linux and have no idea what it is. I am planning to learn to program soon and I've heard all about it all the time but never understood it. Will there be limitations on what I can and/or can't code with Linux compared to Windows? If someone can enlighten me, please do so! [link] [comments] |

[howto] enable and disable touchpad Posted: 24 Nov 2019 02:59 AM PST This is pretty easy. I prefer a mouse to a touchpad and since I run a fairly light window manager there's no gooey way to shut off the touchpad and I'd prefer not to permanently disable it. Here we go - From a terminal window type Output of We can see that the device ID for my touchpad is 14. Then all we do is If you want to re-enable the touchpad run the command again but change the 0 to a 1. Easy :) I run openbox so I put this in ~/.xinitrc - I could also have put it in openbox' autostart file. I also made a couple of menu entries to turn it on and off if I feel the need. You could also create bash aliases to do this if the command line is more your thing. Enjoy :) [link] [comments] |
Would you be able to install the same software on all distros based on the same? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 01:24 PM PST For example, would you be able to install all the same stuff on Debian/Ubuntu/Pop etc? Since they are all based on the same? I've used Ubuntu and Fedora primarily. I really enjoyed Fedora, but had some issues with software I needed not working, and Ubuntu has everything I need, but I find it kind of bloated (not to mention recent privacy concerns). Can anyone help me clear up my concerns/lack of knowledge? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Nov 2019 01:11 PM PST Hey, I don't know all that much when it comes to Linux, but I've always liked the idea of becoming a pen-tester and getting into CTF. Now this can be somewhat hard since it's not all that friendly to people who are completely new to Linux and those that don't know a lot about all the terminology, etc. And this kinda stuff can be sort of lonely since there aren't that much people that know about this kinda stuff, so i was wondering if i could find someone that's willing to talk and at least has a descent amount of knowledge about this kind of thing, It would be really nice to have a guide. My dm's are open to anyone and if you wanna talk or help I'd really appreciate it :/ [link] [comments] |
Sweet Baby Jesus, Somebody explain Linux on Chromebook and how to install Audacity Please. Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:22 AM PST What the title says. I have a Chromebook, I need to do some audio editing, layering a couple tracks, cleaning up background sound. I can't find any suitable replacement. I have never used Linux on Chromebook (or at all, for that matter), and I cannot find instructions on where to even begin. Someone please explain to me, step by step, how to make this work. I did try Crossover app, but my Chromebook said it did not recognize the windows file. [link] [comments] |

Thinking about switching to Linux -- what should a Mac user know? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 09:50 AM PST Hi, I am currently using a 2011 Macbook Air and I'm consider to switch because I can't update the OS since this model has been discontinued (I'm running High Sierra). I'm aware that you can bypass this limitation, but I'm afraid to try that. I have installed Linux Mint onto another computer a few months ago and have really liked it so far, but I don't just want to install the first distro I've used. I've been trying out other distros as well (Manjaro xfce, Parrot, Peppermint, Elementary, Ubuntu, and Fedora), but Mint still remains my overall preference. I haven't had any issues running them on my Mac. Are there any distros you would recommend? So, as someone considering to switch, what should I know about Linux (both positive or negative)? What would be the pros and cons of switching? Any general advice? How does Linux do in terms of security and malware? What about Mac hardware? [link] [comments] |
Screen dead after suspend (and stays that way) Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:57 AM PST Hi, I have a problem, my laptops screen when I suspend it (usually after some update bit sometimes just randomly) just stops working. When I try to unsuspend (awake?) the computer, it works, the diodes are on, I can change the status of CapsLock or NumLock, I can eject the CD-ROM... But I cannot see a thing on the screen, and even after I shut it down manually, the screen is still not working. I have to reconnect the battery, and that's especially annoying, because to do so, I have to remove the whole bottom panel and also keyboard and touchpad. I'm using Fedora 31 on Lenovo Ideapad 310-15ikb. Thank you for any help ;) [link] [comments] |

Upgrading from a 370 to a 580. What should I do software-wise? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 10:26 AM PST So I'm very comfortable with the physical upgrade and I'm really looking forward to it obviously, but I'm wondering what things I should do within Manjaro to make my PC compatible. Currently running an R7 370 so I think AMDGPU drivers. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
