Setting up partitions for Debian along side Windows Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:49 AM PDT I'm currently attempting to dual boot Debian alongside Windows 10 (W10 being the main OS for now) I'm having a little trouble setting up the partitions from the Debian GUI though, Windows partitions partitions are: System reserved (Primary) (C:) (Primary) Recovery (Primary) I've set a unallocated partition of around 70GB ~ what's the best way to set up a: Boot partition (1GB - Primary) Root Directory (assume that is the majority of my space - Logical) Swap Partition (I have 4GB RAM so assume I need 8GB Swap Space - Logical) All with EXT4 filesystem. Can somebody point me out the most straight forward way to do this? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Which distro should i use? High end PC Posted: 03 Oct 2019 11:54 AM PDT Hello, I've meaning to use Linux for a long, long time but I have this PC which requires plenty of drivers and software and I am afraid something could go wrong due to the absence of its drivers or software, here's the build: Asus Strix Z270E Please let me know if there's a way i can still use my hardware at 100% while using Linux. How do I install an AMD graphics card? Ubuntu Mate Posted: 03 Oct 2019 11:03 AM PDT I was under the impression that the open source drivers came with the kernel so it would plug and play, but with it installed I get a blank screen, even if I plug back into the motherboard DVI port. What am I missing? [link] [comments] |
Is Ubunto right for me...lots of questions Posted: 03 Oct 2019 11:36 AM PDT Background--casual PC user. Still use Windows 7; current desktop is out of space and I need to upgrade. I use my desktop mainly for photo-editing/storage; music storage/playing; and retention of PDF files/taxes, etc. I am not a big gamer. I don't stream. I don't use the cloud. I am not interested in doing so. I stopped following tech trends circa 2005. I don't code, but am also not a old-timer technophobe, and can follow instructions. I don't really care for Windows 10 or the fact I have to send all my telemetry to them. Other than i-tunes...I don't really use the apple environment. I also de-coded all of my i-tunes music so it will play on an MP3 player (yes, I still use that). Questions:
basically, is this something that will: a) work for my needs; and b) doesn't require a computer science degree to implement? [link] [comments] |

How much time should I set aside to install Arch? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:26 AM PDT I'm a father of 2 small kids, I work a full-time job, and I have a hobby that takes me out of the office 2-3 nights a week. I'm also curious about Arch and want to try it. However, considering I need to budget my time, how much time should I set aside for this? Let's say we limit the scope to installing Arch and some form of DE. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Don't Know How To Make A .destop To Launch A sudo Command Please Help? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 12:35 PM PDT I have installed an application called GfxTablet for wireless drawing for ubuntu on ubuntu version 19.04 disco dingo which I now use as my day to day operating system having left windows for good. I set about customizing the build I made menus and added software took somesoftware off mostly the pre-loaded software and added all the bits and bobs I feel I want, but I am struggling with the GfxTablet app it's self their github page is found here /rfc2822.github.io/GfxTablet/ but they don't describe how to make an Icon for the tool. I can make a .desktop icon for regularly installed programs, but this GfxTablet program is running via a commanline it isn't a program that opens froma double click and/or already has an icon to click for it, so I would love to know how I can create a simple .desktop icon to launch it so I can drag it onto a dock and simply click the picture to openi it having it then asking for the sudo password to make it run please. When to run it you must first open a terminal I use Tilix after that you need to type in the following command line to run it : ./networktablet The other thing is in properties for the file that's called networktablet residing in .local/GfxTablet folder that file does not tell me the file type it is in properties information pane or looking at it's icon label also does not dictate what type of file that it is? I am confused.com and then some mainly due to the fact that I have tried multiple multiple convoluted drawn out guides online and different descriptions to make it run as a .desktop file there are many many complex half explained guides with bash for eg and making a sh script guides but they do not make it baby layman terms for begginers. I am new to linux adept to Windows getting decent on Mac but this is a nightmare. Any help will be advantageous thanks in advance. :( [link] [comments] |
ufw find rejected port and allow him to pass Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:47 AM PDT How do I find out which port was rejected recently? Situation: I have one Host with Proxmox installed. on this proxmox is a debianVM client. In the last 2 hours I have been looking for an error and found that my ufw(on Host) blocked the DNS request coming from the client side of the VM. (fun fact, DNS request from host runs well, but inside the VM they are rejected) After I'm disabled ufw, everthing was working fine. Then ok, "ufw allow out to any port 53", enable ufw.... does not work. so my question, how do I check what ufw currently blocks, Is there a log which shows me the last blocked requests? Is Blackmagic version of CentOs is safe? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:22 AM PDT Hi, I have been using Davinci Resolve Studio 16 in Ubuntu for a while. But , I am interested to move to Blackmagic version of CentOs because it is recommended by them and otherwise they won't give any official support. However, I have heard that system update is not reccomended because they expect you to be working for Hollywood where workstations are secure. And they are also using the old version of Nvidia driver. I am interested to use Linux for my daily OS. So, update and secured OS is important. That's the whole point of using Linux in first place. What is your recommendation? Or opinion in this? Should I go ahead with CentOs (BM version) or use Resolve Studio in Windows just for the sake of official support? Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Rebooting laptop not working in Linux (all distro's) Posted: 03 Oct 2019 06:14 AM PDT The issue I'm having applies to all distro's. First my setup. I have an Asus GL552VW Republic of Gamers laptop with 2 SSD's. One has Windows 10 installed and the other one Linux Mint 19.2. It has a keyboard with backlights (I'll explain later why I think it's important to mention this). It has an issue with the Intel GPU where generic drivers will cause external monitors connected by HDMI to randomly turn black. The OEM's driver works and I know it has to do with how the Intel (530 )and Nvidia (960M) GPU's are physically connected (might be useful information). So here's the issue. When I power on my laptop while it's completely off, the Asus logo shows up for a couple of seconds after which I get the GRUB menu where I can choose to boot into Windows or Linux. When I'm in Linux Mint and reboot via the GUI or by console commands, Mint shuts down, but when the computer tries to boot again, the screen stays black and nothing happens. Even the Asus logo doesn't show up. The reason I mentioned the keyboard backlight, is that normally they all turn on the moment I power on or reboot the computer (rebooting works normally when I do it in Windows). When I reboot in Linux, only the power button light goes on and stays on. To fix the issue, I have to hold the power button till it shuts off and then press it again to power it up, after which it boots normally (first Asus logo, then GRUB menu). I once just let it stay this way for a couple of hours to see if something would change, but nothing. The power light stays on and the screen stays black. I do hear the fans spinning, so maybe it is doing something, or at least all the hardware is powered. I have quite a lot of experience and knowledge regarding Linux and it's software, but not with how computers boot or how operating systems handle the hardware, so maybe you guys can help me. My guess is that it has something to do with settings regarding BIOS/UEFI, GRUB, ACPI or ASPM. Or could it be unique to the way operating systems handle this process? It's not a terrible issue, only annoying, but I would really like to know what causes it and how to fix it and learn more about how all of this stuff works under the hood. Thanks in advance! Can I install a desktop environment without all those apps or use apps from another DE? How do I know which apps are going to come with the installation? A question everybody is quite tired of... Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:23 AM PDT Hello! So, I'm using Ubuntu since a few years and have helped spreading the Linux cause to about a dozen or so other people. I'm (by far!) not a power user and can certainly not say that I dabbled further than most into the arcane knowledge of "deeper linux". As I say, I dabble. But lately, I'm beginning to get tired of Ubuntu: I get the feeling that, since at least 18.10, things get slower and less reliable than before. Heck, when I (dual-)boot, it takes *much* more time for Ubuntu (about 1 minute 40) than for Windows (a few seconds) to get to the login screen, SSD or no SSD. When I copy large amounts of data (say a full copy of all my files in /Home to another HDD, the whole machine becomes extremely sluggish and some applications won't even open until after the copy is done. That, plus some unexplained freezes or even reboots make me wonder: is it time for another distro? (and now comes the dreaded question:) If so, which distro? I need a good and strong office PC with some limited gaming capacity (World of Tanks mainly), with as much "set it and forget-it" features as possible (i.e. user friendliness is paramount). I'm using a rather new desktop PC with an AMD® Ryzen 5 1600 proc, a GeForce GTX 1050/PCIe/SSE2 graphics card, 12GB RAM, 255MB SSD, two 3 TB HDD. I was thinking of Fedora or (but wouldn't that defeat the purpose of quitting Ubuntu?) Mint for the moment, but am very much open for new ideas as long as they're not too esoteric... Thanks in advance for any help! [link] [comments] |
Problem using my printer (Brother DCP-L2540DW) since installing Linux 19.2 (Cinnamon) on laptop Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:34 AM PDT I installed Mint (Cinnamon) 19.2 on my laptop. The printer driver that shows up is Generic-PCL-6-PCL-XL. My computer will print, but the fonts and sizing are all off. My printer is a Brother DCP-L2540DW. I went to the Brother website to download the proper driver, but after downloading it I'm not quite sure what to do. I'm kinda lost. Any help for a noob? [link] [comments] |
