    want to switch to linux

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 10:22 AM PDT

I have use linux in the past but always just got lost when stuff broke and I didn't have the knowledge to fix them with out doing a complete reinstall. Could anyone here offer some free resources on learning out to use linux and the file structure/system. I'm completely spoiled by windows and just point-click-go. I'm currently using pop-os with kubuntu-desktop. I enjoy doing some web development and light gaming. I like pop os but i've heard it's really no better than windows when it comes to privacy matters. MX linux looks appealing and Manjaro because I do have an nvidia gtx card. computer is older. Some things I would like to figure out is how to make sure installs go to my 2nd hdd. I have a small ssd that i use for the OS and some other smaller things but my 2nd hdd has much more space and that's where i usually keep all of my steam installs and do my dev work. Any help that you guys and gals could offer to a complete noob will be invaluable to me. Thank you kindly for taking the time out of your day to read this and help.

Edit: confused popos with deepin privacy issues. Thanks for correcting me.

TIL you can't cURL without limits..

In my process of learning new commands, I discovered this magic tool called curl, and it amazed me that I could get so much data and any info so easily...Or so I thought! since I curled the shit out of google until I got a rude message from them, telling me I was IP blocked. It was right after that I learned I wasn't allowed to make automated searches, which wasn't that obvious to me beforehand🤦‍♂️

    I can't see my Wifi

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:30 AM PDT

    Hi everyone I need help...

On my laptop (Running Ubuntu) I am not able to connect to my wifi (sometimes) it just disappears. I see everything but not my Wifi. I am well in range of the wifi (literally next to it) but it still doesn't show up so I thought I must have downloaded something and my installation is broken and I wanted to try a new distro anyways (more lightweight) so I installed Xubuntu. But when the prompt for Wireless connections appears I still don't see it. It works on other devices (My Windows 10 PC, and all the phones I tried it on, and my sister's pc [Win 7] with a usb wifi adapter)

The Wifi only works sometimes I could get it to work before on the 5GHz just by pressing forget connection and restarting the wifi in the setting but that no longer works

Does anyone here have any idea what is the cause?

Is it possible to switch between operating systems on the same drive without a restart?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:02 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have an ubuntu LTS 18.0.4 and a windows 10 partition on my ssd. And if I want to switch between them, I have to do a restart. Is it possible to use the terminal to switch directly into the windows partition without a restart. Or if not, is it possible to perform a restart through the terminal such that I won't have to manually open the bios and select my windows partition (which I do not have set to the default boot partition)?

    Thanks for your time.

What makes different distrobutions memory usage so different.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:57 PM PDT

I always assumed that one of the biggest differentiating factors was the DE that a distro used. But I've been testing some different distros in VirtualBox today to try and decide which one I want to use for a project, and I was surprised when I found out that my Debian 10 VM was using over 300MiB less memory than my CentOS 8 (about 700MiB vs 1GiB) installation both running GNOME freshly booted. I checked out the running processes, but I can't see any meaningfully large processes taking up all the extra room. I can't really find anything that accounts for that kind of difference.

So what components of the operating system causes such a gulf in memory usage, if it not the DE?

Thanks in advance for any help.

How to properly manage configuration files on linux?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:53 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've decided to make a reinstall of my system, because it got unstable because I probably accidentally deleted some important files in the home directory while trying to organize stuff, and make the home directory less cluttered.

So how on a new installation should I keep the files organized? I want only the directories like Downloads Desktop Documents Pictures and similar to be in my home directory. And I want all the config files, like .Xdefaults .vimrc .zshrc .nvm .oh-my-zsh .tor-browser .zsh_history .surf .vscode and all the many many many other config files to be located in the .config folder. But all those programs that do not already have their config files in the .config folder will look for their config files in the home directory. And configuring all programs to look in the .config directory for their config files is either really hard, or simply not possible.

So how can I organize my config files properly? I've heard about GNU Stow, but I'm not really sure if this is appropriate tool to use in this case. Plus, I have troubles understanding what exactly the programs does. Can Stow be used here or is there a better alternative to do this?

    thanks in advance

(plus, I'm using yay for programs installations, is it normal that it installs all the programs straight into the home directory or am I just doing something wrong?)

    Ubuntu server network interface issue

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 12:32 PM PDT

I'm trying to set up an Ubuntu 18.04 server in a VM with Virtual box. I have set up 2 virtual network cards, one is set to NAT type, to have internet called enp0s3, the other is set for the internal network so I can run a few clients as well called enp0s8. My NAT card doesnt seem to get an ip address, only for the first boot. I've tried it on different networks, but nothing helped. I cant proceed until I figure out why it doesnt get an ip. Is there a fix for this? Set up a fix ip for it maybe? Thanks!!

Can I install Linux in the same drive I'm using to test it?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:38 AM PDT

I'm new to Linux and decided to do a dual-boot of Ubuntu and Windows 10. I used Rufus to install Ubuntu in a 32gb flash drive, and I would like to know if I can install the os in the same drive I'm running it. And, more importantly, if the answer to the previous question is yes, when I unplug the flash drive, it will boot directly to windows? The pc I'm going to do that is being shared, so I wouldn't like to have people always selecting "windows" even though the Ubuntu option isn't going to work because the drive isn't there. I'm sorry if my questions were confusing, English is my second language and I'm still learning it. Anyways, thanks in advance!

Which is the real RAM usage?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:37 AM PDT

Hi, I am quite new to Linux things. Got bored on Windows 10, and read some that Linux performs better in some cases for Ryzen CPUs (now have 3800x). Now I'm back to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to try out after only tried installing back in high school (that was 2014 I think?). So far it feels more responsive than Windows 10 on basic tasks like browsing, opening/switching apps. On steam I mostly play Cities Skylines, the most reason I went for since very few people tested it and none did on very huge city-save. Higher fps on Ubuntu, but inconsistent fps than Windows 10. Here is where I need the sensor monitor.

GNOME System Monitor is basic enough, but I wanted something like HWinfo sensor on Windows 10, which you can see all the sensors; temperature, fan RPMs, read/write activities, CPU/GPU usage etc.. I want at least the temperature and usage to be shown, and prefer to have GUI (not hitting terminal every second).
By googling it, I found Psensor which can run in the background. Can have some sensors displayed in the drop-down menu (idk what is called) at the top right too, pretty neat.

I am aware that new Ryzen CPU needs newer Linux kernel for CPU temps to be displayed, totally fine with that. However, I noticed that RAM usage on GNOME System Monitor and Psensor reports differently.

GNOME System Monitor says 3.8 GB (9%) used, Psensor says 5.338 GB (17%) used... Huh?

I've googled it, but so far I wasn't able to find other people encountered this issue. What is the difference between these two? Or if there are better alternatives I would like to know.

    Thank you in advance.

    Seemingly random system crashes

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:52 AM PDT

Since I started dual booting Arch with Windows 10 I get seemingly random crashes while using Arch. The screen freezes, Xorg crashes and I get a lot of (to me unknown) text dumped to my tty (see picture). This started happening when I started dual booting Windows 10. Firefox also crashes at least twice a day. These things never happened when I had only installed Arch.

Specs may be interesting, I am running this on a Lenovo Ideapad 520, 20GiB RAM and I am using Nvidia drivers for my GPU.

Does anyone know what causes the system freezes? Which logs do I have to check to determine the cause? Can anyone decipher the (limited) information in my picture?

Freezing of desktop after waking from suspend (Lubuntu 19.04)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:44 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

(This has already been posted on /r/Lubuntu but I'm posting here to get more coverage.) I'm new so forgive me if I'm breaking any subreddit rules. I have recently been using Lubuntu 19.04 (LXQt environment) and everything has been great save for one problem. Anytime I try to suspend the laptop and wake up, I see the desktop and am able to move the mouse around, but I am unable to click on anything. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the mouse driver or the desktop freezes. At this point, I am forced to hold down the power button to shut off the machine. In addition, attempting to hibernate the machine does nothing. I'm using an HP laptop with E2-9000E processor 1.5Ghz, 8gb 2133Mhz, AMD Radeon R2 integrated graphics, and a 500gb SSD. Let me know what additional information would be helpful (again, pretty new to lubuntu and linux in general)!

    Thanks in advance!

What is the difference between a symbolic link and a directory?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:19 AM PDT

A hardlink is a file and points to an inode. A symbolic link can be a direcotory. So why isnt the following code the same

    ln -s someDirecotry cp -a someDirectory .

Why does the mouse pointer move weird when dragging windows?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:50 AM PDT

It's probably weird question. But when you use mouse and move a window by dragging or shaking it, the mouse pointer seem to be hovering on top of window borders. Is it just me or is there any reason for that?

Question about partitions and best practise

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 01:43 AM PDT

    Hi,

Im kind of new to Linux and want to install KDE Neon on my desktop. I have one NVMe SSD disk for this but I want to partition it so I can have other partitions for windows dual boot.

    Ok so to the problem/question

    I first installed with only setting /root (20GB) and /Home (120GB).
Then I realise I need a /swap partition. I tried creating this manually through guides but it didnt go smooth so I decided to go back to the installer. There I create a Swapspace of 1.5x my RAM (wanna use hibernation) and then I reformat my / root also. Did not touch Home.

Now what I notice when I started back up is that my previous installations of apps like firefox, thunderbird hexchat etc, did not follow. Actually the entire old "/Home" directory was not intergrated in the OS anymore, it was just a mounted partition.

So what did I do wrong here? I thought you could just reformat /root and then just have all your installed apps and settings kept? That was the whole point of making a seperate /home partition?
Now someone just told me that the user apps and configs is actually in /usr and that is on the /root partition. So I should also seperate this?

So what is the best common practise here? No guides I found say to seperate /usr - only /home from /root...

    Thank you all

    Best distro for NVIDIA

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:25 AM PDT

What is the best distro to use out the box for a laptop with 16 GB ram and a 1060 NVIDIA GPU? I wanted to give Linux a try but for now I just need it working out of the box without needing to use a VM. So far it seems I can't use Ubuntu or Fedora. Any other ideas?

Update! PopOS works! Thank you so much! I ran in to one snag with the install failing on the final step but I fixed it by going to demo mode and running

    "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade"

In addition to manually partitioning instead of selecting "clean install"
