Work and business laptop which can play Dota2

    Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:42 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $600 possible to exceed by a bit. From Malaysia/Singapore

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and portable. Use it mainly for work and some light gaming mainly Dota2

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm not too sure here as long as not too bulky.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13' or 14'

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Dota2

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dota2 - low to medium setting is fine

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Anything here. But I really like the thin aluminium finish on the laptop.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mainly for work and business. Some travel and gaming in between.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    Around 1000$-1250$, USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

I want to use it mainly for programming and perhaps some basic rendering in the future. I would prioritize portability and performance since I need to carry the laptop around the entire day as a student. A good battery life would also be nice.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Important.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows/ MAC

Anything between 13 to 15.5 inches

I don't know right now but I might want to do some basic renders in the future.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I am fine with it not being able to run heavy games.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

i would prefer 12-16 gigs of RAM but 8 gigs will also work. I also want at least 256 gigs of storage. Touch screen is preferred but not required.

Basically I want a portable laptop that I can comfortably code on for at least 2-3 years.

    Can't decide for 17" notebook

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 04:17 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking for a notebook for a week but I couldn't decide so I came here for help. I am living in EU and my budget is aroud $2000.

I always used smaller size screens like 15.6", 14" and I want to try out 17.3" ones.

I mostly use computer for coding, reading documents and watching stuff so good screen and keyboard is priority for me. Also I play games once in a while, mostly CS:GO and War Thunder.

I have some problems with Lenovo and ASUS in past so I just skip them.
MSI looks good but they have some weird keyboard layout but I think I can get used to it if there is a good deal.
I like dark and pastel colors and dislike colorful things. I even skip Dell G3 17 because blue lighting of keyboard. For example red on black looks quite good.

Currently I am inclined to Acer Nitro 5.

Lenovo Legion Y530: Is there a way to have the fans always spin

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:30 AM PDT

The fan control is dreadful. Below a threshold the fans stop spinning but shortly after when temps go above the threshold fans kick-in loudly and scare you. This happens every few minutes.

I've undervolted the CPU (-0.15v) and disabled boost mode. Still, I can't get over this behaviour.

My main priority is to have complete silence when I'm typing text so I'm willing to undervolt/clock it to Intel Atom levels.

If that's not possible then I'll gladly have the fans always spin quietly and ramp up when I'm doing something more demanding. Is this possible?

If not, I'm thinking to overclock it to max and force the fans to always spin.

I have done some research on my own and I have narrowed it down to a few laptops in my price range which are the Lenovo 730S and one of the Asus Zenbooks. Specifically, the Lenovo 730s-81JB0006US which is $770 and the Asus Zenbook UX391UA-XB71-R which is $800, both of which have the same intel I7 cpu. The remaining spec, from what I have seen are almost identical. Most of the use the machine will see will not be heavy use which is pushing me towards the 730S with the i5 cpu instead of the i7 for only $700. I will primarily use this in the library for studying/research and typing up documents on word and excel.

Mechanical Engineering Student Upgrade to Portable Laptop

    Posted: 27 Sep 2019 12:28 PM PDT

So I'm trying to upgrade from my current laptop which is fast and reliable but is too heavy and bulky. I'm trying to get a new laptop I can carry around easier and that last longer than 15 min when unplugged.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA $500-$800
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would say that specs are more important because I'm usually in a place where I can plug in. 2 in 1 is not important but a touch screen would be nice.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I just don't want it to be bulky. If it is light and easy to transport that's great.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I might use solidworks and matlab but if it has trouble, I can use my old laptop which can run solidworks fine.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I pretty much only play Factorio on PC.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a touch screen, a few USB ports, and maybe an HDMI port.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking to purchase a laptop that I can use after I finish college. A good general use laptop is my main goal.

    Thanks for your help!

    New laptop for school.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 02:58 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

    I've been using a 6-year-old laptop: 4gb ram, i5-3337u, nvidia 720m.

I'm studying business infromatics and I'm planning to buy a new laptop.

    I would use it for:

    • light programming (pycharm)
    • databases (sql)
    • statistics (spss)
    • playing League of Legends
    • watching movies/tv shows

    I want a notebook that:

    • has a great battery life (around 8 hours with browsing)
    • has a slim design
    • has a 13-14 inch screen
    • is under 2kg
    • is under 1.100$ (under 350.000 huf)
    • (-has a dedicated gpu (mx150) but that's not important)

    I don't really care about:

    • webcam
    • microphone
    • speakers (it doesn't have to be loud or crystal clear)
    • screen's colour accuracy
    • screen brightness (I'm gonna use it mainly indoor)
    • touch screen

I'd like to use it for at least 4 years.

Right now I'm eyeing with the ThinkPad T480 which I could get under 700$ (fhd, 8gb ram, i5-8250u, 256gb ssd), and I could upgrade the ram and ssd later.

Would a MacBook Air be enough? (I'm using iPhone and it would be great to have macos since I'm using the icloud mail, the icloud for all my university files, apple music, imessage.

„Please keep in mind that in Hungary the prices are higher. For example the base macbook air costs 1100$ in the US while in Hungary it costs around 1400$."

How can I improve the color of my laptop screen?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 02:46 AM PDT

I purchased the Lenovo Legion Y530 yesterday and it came with a decent display. The color isn't that accurate and I'm used to 99% sRGB/10-bit (8-bit+FRC). Is there a way to calibrate the colors with software-only or tweak some settings to improve the display quality?

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 not important at all, I would love a good battery life (preferably 7+ hours doing development work) and the best specifications that will allow decent battery life

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing in particular

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. A great laptop that will last a few years

    I've been looking at several options: * Dell XPS 13 * Dell XPS 15 * Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon * Lenovo Thinkpad X390 * Lenovo Thinkpad T480 * HP Envy 13 * HP Spectre x360 * Asus Zenbook 13

Which do you think is the best for me? Any other suggestions?

    Lightweight Gaming/College Laptop, USA, ~$650

    Posted: 27 Sep 2019 11:16 PM PDT

    Total budget/Country of Purchase

$650, USA, also preferably found on Amazon

    Preference

Good battery life, best specs for the price, SSD most important

    Weight and Thinness Importance

Fairly important, I'm a college student so I don't want something humongous, but if that's all that's available then I can learn to love it.

    OS

    Windows

    Preferred Screen Size

    Doesn't matter

    Programs

Mainly something that can handle Crusader Kings 2 @ 60fps if possible in this range

A backlit keyboard would be nice, but not necessary.

I currently have an Acer Swift 3 (SF 314-51 variant), so it would need to have better specs than what I currently have.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

best specs for the money, i dont need 2 in 1, especially if that makes it more breakable

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I will probably not carry it with me often but I'd like to have the option. So I'd like it to be manageable to carry once in a while.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A

I need it to be around the 15.6 in mark

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am studying photography in school, my first class in photography is 35mm but I'd like to be able to edit digital photos if I need to, but that's yet to be determined as my school has equipment for this on campus but idk how much work i'd end up doing at home. I play Sims 2-4, and that's abt it.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to play the sims series. Laptop mode settings without crashing.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I need an optical drive for the games I own as well as ripping some CDs i've bought since my computer died. I could get a USB one but I don't want to go over budget to do so. I would want a nice enough display for gaming on and possible photo editing as well as watching movies/tv. For some reason my laptops always end up with damage to the hinges, so nice build quality could be nice if it'd help with that. Also I want a headphone jack.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't know how specs work with graphics so I'm kind of at a loss for what to search for. I want games movies and photos to look as good as possible within my budget.

Is this a good price for the Lenovo T480?

    https://www.newegg.com/p/1TS-000E-09ER6

I want one with 32gigs of RAM (I keep a lot of things running at once, one program in particular eats up a lot of RAM) and at least 1TB of hard drive space. The 1080p screen is also a must because I can't work on those 1300x760-whatever screens. Is this a good price for this?

University student looking to make the switch from Mac

    Posted: 27 Sep 2019 03:03 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

~$1500 AUD can be flexible though

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Would not like 2-in-1, battery life is important as I'll be a uni all day (min 5 hours)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I do care about how the laptop looks, but would rather a durable laptop than a super thing one.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I prefer mac (someone pls convince me why I'm wrong lol)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A

Wouldn't want anything smaller than 13" - the bigger the better though

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Occasionally use photoshop (adobe)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

My current macbook pro has lasted 8 years, I want a durable and reliable laptop with decent processing capacity. I hope that it will last me many years without the battery or HD failing - that is whats most important to me

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I had a really good experience with my macbook pro 2012 which is why I'm leaning towards a mac air (it is more in my price range than a pro). My only hesitation is a lot of my friends have had issues with their laptop and I am concerned that the thinness wont allow proper cooling >battery failure. What are peoples thoughts on why a macbook air is/isnt a good option? What would be a good alternative considering my main preferences are durability, speed and aesthetics? Is a macbook pro worth the extra money? (side note: I also get a discount on mac through work so that is another incentive)

    Thanks in advance! :)
