Looking for a laptop as a Computer Engineering student Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:33 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around 1000$-1250$, USA * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I want to use it mainly for programming and perhaps some basic rendering in the future. I would prioritize portability and performance since I need to carry the laptop around the entire day as a student. A good battery life would also be nice. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Important. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows/ MAC * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Anything between 13 to 15.5 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I don't know right now but I might want to do some basic renders in the future. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I am fine with it not being able to run heavy games. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** i would prefer 12-16 gigs of RAM but 8 gigs will also work. I also want at least 256 gigs of storage. Touch screen is preferred but not required. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Basically I want a portable laptop that I can comfortably code on for at least 2-3 years. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 04:17 AM PDT Hi, I am looking for a notebook for a week but I couldn't decide so I came here for help. I am living in EU and my budget is aroud $2000. I always used smaller size screens like 15.6", 14" and I want to try out 17.3" ones. I mostly use computer for coding, reading documents and watching stuff so good screen and keyboard is priority for me. Also I play games once in a while, mostly CS:GO and War Thunder. I have some problems with Lenovo and ASUS in past so I just skip them. Currently I am inclined to Acer Nitro 5. [link] [comments] |

Lenovo Legion Y530: Is there a way to have the fans always spin Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:30 AM PDT The fan control is dreadful. Below a threshold the fans stop spinning but shortly after when temps go above the threshold fans kick-in loudly and scare you. This happens every few minutes. I've undervolted the CPU (-0.15v) and disabled boost mode. Still, I can't get over this behaviour. My main priority is to have complete silence when I'm typing text so I'm willing to undervolt/clock it to Intel Atom levels. If that's not possible then I'll gladly have the fans always spin quietly and ramp up when I'm doing something more demanding. Is this possible? If not, I'm thinking to overclock it to max and force the fans to always spin. [link] [comments] |
General student/adult use laptop for <$800. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:14 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $800 in USA * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money and battery life. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Very important, I am looking for something I can take with me and work on things.. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** ~13-14" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Light programming use. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No gaming * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good keyboard and reliable build quality * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** -fill here, remove dashes- I have done some research on my own and I have narrowed it down to a few laptops in my price range which are the Lenovo 730S and one of the Asus Zenbooks. Specifically, the Lenovo 730s-81JB0006US which is $770 and the Asus Zenbook UX391UA-XB71-R which is $800, both of which have the same intel I7 cpu. The remaining spec, from what I have seen are almost identical. Most of the use the machine will see will not be heavy use which is pushing me towards the 730S with the i5 cpu instead of the i7 for only $700. I will primarily use this in the library for studying/research and typing up documents on word and excel. [link] [comments] |
Mechanical Engineering Student Upgrade to Portable Laptop Posted: 27 Sep 2019 12:28 PM PDT So I'm trying to upgrade from my current laptop which is fast and reliable but is too heavy and bulky. I'm trying to get a new laptop I can carry around easier and that last longer than 15 min when unplugged.

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 02:58 AM PDT Hey guys! I've been using a 6-year-old laptop: 4gb ram, i5-3337u, nvidia 720m. I'm studying business infromatics and I'm planning to buy a new laptop. I would use it for:
I want a notebook that:
I don't really care about:
I'd like to use it for at least 4 years. Right now I'm eyeing with the ThinkPad T480 which I could get under 700$ (fhd, 8gb ram, i5-8250u, 256gb ssd), and I could upgrade the ram and ssd later. Would a MacBook Air be enough? (I'm using iPhone and it would be great to have macos since I'm using the icloud mail, the icloud for all my university files, apple music, imessage. „Please keep in mind that in Hungary the prices are higher. For example the base macbook air costs 1100$ in the US while in Hungary it costs around 1400$." [link] [comments] |
How can I improve the color of my laptop screen? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 02:46 AM PDT I purchased the Lenovo Legion Y530 yesterday and it came with a decent display. The color isn't that accurate and I'm used to 99% sRGB/10-bit (8-bit+FRC). Is there a way to calibrate the colors with software-only or tweak some settings to improve the display quality? Lightweight Gaming/College Laptop, USA, ~$650 Posted: 27 Sep 2019 11:16 PM PDT Total budget/Country of Purchase $650, USA, also preferably found on Amazon Preference Good battery life, best specs for the price, SSD most important Weight and Thinness Importance Fairly important, I'm a college student so I don't want something humongous, but if that's all that's available then I can learn to love it. OS Windows Preferred Screen Size Doesn't matter Programs Mainly something that can handle Crusader Kings 2 @ 60fps if possible in this range A backlit keyboard would be nice, but not necessary. I currently have an Acer Swift 3 (SF 314-51 variant), so it would need to have better specs than what I currently have. [link] [comments] |

New laptop for school and some games <750 Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:54 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase $750 max, USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs for the money, i dont need 2 in 1, especially if that makes it more breakable How important is weight and thinness to you? I will probably not carry it with me often but I'd like to have the option. So I'd like it to be manageable to carry once in a while. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A I need it to be around the 15.6 in mark **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I am studying photography in school, my first class in photography is 35mm but I'd like to be able to edit digital photos if I need to, but that's yet to be determined as my school has equipment for this on campus but idk how much work i'd end up doing at home. I play Sims 2-4, and that's abt it. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to play the sims series. Laptop mode settings without crashing. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need an optical drive for the games I own as well as ripping some CDs i've bought since my computer died. I could get a USB one but I don't want to go over budget to do so. I would want a nice enough display for gaming on and possible photo editing as well as watching movies/tv. For some reason my laptops always end up with damage to the hinges, so nice build quality could be nice if it'd help with that. Also I want a headphone jack. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't know how specs work with graphics so I'm kind of at a loss for what to search for. I want games movies and photos to look as good as possible within my budget. [link] [comments] |

Is this a good price for the Lenovo T480? Posted: 27 Sep 2019 07:11 PM PDT https://www.newegg.com/p/1TS-000E-09ER6 I want one with 32gigs of RAM (I keep a lot of things running at once, one program in particular eats up a lot of RAM) and at least 1TB of hard drive space. The 1080p screen is also a must because I can't work on those 1300x760-whatever screens. Is this a good price for this? [link] [comments] |
University student looking to make the switch from Mac Posted: 27 Sep 2019 03:03 PM PDT
~$1500 AUD can be flexible though
Would not like 2-in-1, battery life is important as I'll be a uni all day (min 5 hours)
I do care about how the laptop looks, but would rather a durable laptop than a super thing one.
I prefer mac (someone pls convince me why I'm wrong lol)
Wouldn't want anything smaller than 13" - the bigger the better though
Occasionally use photoshop (adobe)
N/A
My current macbook pro has lasted 8 years, I want a durable and reliable laptop with decent processing capacity. I hope that it will last me many years without the battery or HD failing - that is whats most important to me
I had a really good experience with my macbook pro 2012 which is why I'm leaning towards a mac air (it is more in my price range than a pro). My only hesitation is a lot of my friends have had issues with their laptop and I am concerned that the thinness wont allow proper cooling >battery failure. What are peoples thoughts on why a macbook air is/isnt a good option? What would be a good alternative considering my main preferences are durability, speed and aesthetics? Is a macbook pro worth the extra money? (side note: I also get a discount on mac through work so that is another incentive) Thanks in advance! :) [link] [comments] |
