Acer Nitro 5 Ryzen 5 Good for Linux? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:29 PM PDT My friend is thinking of Buying Acer Nitro 5 with Ryzen 5 with Dual GPU Vega 8 & RX560X. He wanted to know if Linux can handle Switchable AMD GPUs like bumblebee or Pop OS does for Nvidia. Can anyone help ? Update: My friend purchased it. Someone in Telegram Linux Group said that Manjaro KDE works with support for switching GPU. Also if it doesn't work, "WSL isn't so bad as before" ( I seriously doubt that ). WSL to utilize AMD GPU for OpenGL processing acceleration sounds kinda tough sell. [link] [comments] |

Potential Hardware Issue Preventing Install? Posted: 30 Sep 2019 02:11 AM PDT A few weeks ago, I decided to install Ubuntu on my (18.04.3) on my laptop. It was dual boot with windows, and it worked great. Suddenly stopped working about a week ago - and by that I mean Ubuntu AND Windows would both freeze when trying to boot. Tried reinstalling both, but no luck. Used the Windows 10 installer (USB created with the windows media creation tool) to format the drive, then tried to reinstall both - still no luck with either. Now I've had the laptop for a while and I had a superstitious sort of feeling that maybe the hard drive had failed (I can be somewhat rough with laptops), or that at the very least I had corrupted it beyond my ability to repair it. So I bought a cheap SSD and installed it today. Now I'm trying to get some variant of Linux installed, but I'm having the same issue where the laptop will restart mid installation. Depending on the distro, I may get an error message during this process. I've tried both Ubuntu (versions 18.04.3 & 19.04) and the most recent version of Bodhi. I've also tried to install Arch Linux, but given my vast inexperience I wasn't able to set it up properly. The Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C55-B5319 and I've been using Rufus to create the bootable USBs that I'm using to try to install the various distros. I'm not sure where to go from here, or how to determine if this a hardware issue or if something I've done has irrevocably corrupted some data hidden on the machine somewhere. It did occasionally crash during boot in the past, but now I can't even get it installed. It's 4:00 AM here, so I'm probably gonna download a few more distros, go to bed, and keep trying tomorrow, but I'll check this thread as soon as I wake up. [link] [comments] |
I'd never installed mint until today... wow.. Beautiful I must confess... Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:16 AM PDT Today I installed mint mate in an old MacBook Pro 2010 for someone who needed a pc and never used Linux before... Myself I'm not a noob but neither an Gentoo user. I don't say arch because anybody can install that... Just saying... I use Debian KDE. But I was surprised how well the MacBook Pro run on Mint. As i've tested several distros on it. I was amazed by the software selection perfect for someone who has no idea where to find linux software. Well organize, clean, beautiful... A beautiful introduction in the Linux world. I never considered it for me as is so "noobish" but now I'm thinking it's great. Ok I won't installed on my main PC but I will recommend it to my friends and family. My friend was also very happy, he was amazed how well it worked, and told me it was great not having to see Microsoft news and Homescapes installed by default. Something I found really helpful was a GUI to discover the fastest repository mirror. (I'm actually looking for something similar for my debian) any of you guys have a recommendation... Thanks... Install radeon-profile-daemon? Posted: 30 Sep 2019 12:52 PM PDT I have install radeon-profile, but since it requires root privilages to run I can't autostart it on boot. I tried installing the daemon version, but I have no idea how to properly use it. Help would be very appreciated! GPU: Vega 56 OS: Manjaro Budgie [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:06 AM PDT Hi, today I decided to started using Ubuntu over the Windows and I got couple problems for which I would be grateful if someone could help me with them: -I have a 2 hard disks (ssd and 1t hdd), on hdd I made before program files partition for installing softwares, how that works on Ubuntu, i don't see any option where i want to put software -I installed blender and launch it, i can see dot on blender logo so its open, but i don't see it anywhere, what to do, so I can use it many thanks in advance, and my apologizes for bad grammar. Edit: problem with blender is solved, I didn't knew that I had 2 screens loaded (one main, another one TV, but since TV was off I couldn't see what is open there), so I change that in setting and fixed it [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2019 12:46 PM PDT Hello dear Linux community, I hope you all are doing well. I seriously want to switch to Linux full-time, but there's something bothering me and I thought you could maybe help me..? I've been using Linux for the past month and a half, and I absolutely love it. I'm running Manjaro KDE 18.1, one of my favorite distros out there. It works out of the box, I have access to AUR (which is both awesome and a bit scary in my opinion), it is well optimized for both productivity work and for gaming. Not to mention it's extremely easy to install Nvidia drivers, which is pretty important to me since I have Nvidia GPU. It isn't as heavy on resources as Windows 10 is, it's fast and lightweight – it's the perfect distro, isn't it? Yes, it is. At least in my opinion :) I've loved every single moment I spent working on Linux during the past month and a half. It really is an amazing experience. Learning something new every day feels like getting that big warm hug from somebody you really love. At the moment of writing this, I still have dual boot of Win 10 and Manjaro KDE, and 99% of the time I spend in front of my PC is on Manjaro. So then, if you are still reading, you might ask why am I writing this post? I'm glad you asked. The main issue I have when it comes to switching from Windows to Linux is just that. The switch. Let me explain. You see, I've been Windows user for nearly 20 years. I've used pretty much every version of Windows. I want to ditch Windows because I just got sick of it. It hasn't done anything bad, it's just that I wouldn't like to use it anymore. Sure thing, it crashed in the past. It popped up update notification way too often, and generally speaking, it wasn't really a secure OS. I use my computer for all sorts of stuff, from simple office work, to gaming; from browsing the web, all the way up to coding. And with Windows I could do that just fine. I can do exactly that on Linux without any issues, which is great. What's even better is that all the software I use is either officially supported on Linux, or if it isn't I always find a great alternative. The main problem for me is… I'm afraid of change. Like I said, at the moment of writing this I have dual boot, Windows 10 and Manjaro KDE. Windows 10 is installed on my 240 GB SSD and has additional 1 TB HDD for storage. Manjaro KDE is installed on my other 120 GB SSD, without additional storage. I just can't seem to ditch Windows for Linux. I don't know if I want to use it as my daily OS. Everything just works on Linux, plus, Linux has a great community. But then again, Windows is Windows. I don't want to make anyone who switched from Windows to Linux feel bad. It's just that I'm currently in a very messy position. And I don't know how to move from the point I'm currently standing. :( I appreciate if you have read this post. And I sincerely hope somebody will help me resolve this issue. Thank you in advance. Cheers! Written on Manjaro 18.1 KDE P.S. I've just realized that I wrote such a dramatic piece, which really wasn't my intention :P However, if you want this post to sound even more dramatic than it actually is, play this in a background with loop option enabled. Is this a solid plan to dual boot? Posted: 30 Sep 2019 03:56 AM PDT My goal is to dual boot Windows 10 with my current GNU/Linux install. I have one 1TB SSD that I want to install Windows 10 on. I want to know if the following plan will get me a successful dual boot. The partition scheme right now is as follows:
My plan is to live boot Arch Linux, delete the swap and EFI partitions, shrink /dev/sda1 to 822.5G and create /dev/sda2 as a 100G NTFS partition. I will then add the swap and EFI partitions as /dev/sda3 and /dev/sda4 and update my fstab. After installing Windows 10 on the NTFS partition I will restore the bootloader to /dev/sda4. The partition table will then look like this:
Will this plan work out? I have made a backup of my current setup but I want to double check this because it's quite a hassle to restore everything. Also: can I just grub-install after installing Windows so that I can get a GRUB menu with both a GNU/Linux entry and a Windows entry? Or do I need to manually add Windows to the boot menu? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
RTMPS via Stunnel4 not working on VPS Posted: 30 Sep 2019 06:31 AM PDT Hey guys, I am trying to setup RTMPS Restreaming server in the cloud using Nginx with RTMP Module and Stunnel4. I was able to successfully setup RTMP module with Nginx and whenever I have to stream, I restore a vultr snapshot and stream to FB & YT for $0.01/hr Facebook is moving from RTMP to RTMPS and that is why I am trying to get it working before the last date. Everything works fine without Stunnel4 but when I pass the RTMP feed through the Stunnel, it doesn't push it to the facebook live page. I tried it on Debian 8 & 9, Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, CentOS 6.8 & 7. When I installed Stunnel & Nginx on my Windows PC, it sent the stream to FB without any issues. Here are my config files, if I couuld get some help then that would be greatly appreciated. /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf /etc/stunnel/stunnel.conf [link] [comments] |
Switching HTPC from Windows 7 - A few questions Posted: 30 Sep 2019 11:24 AM PDT My HTPC has been running on Windows 7 forever but I'm not willing to do 10. I've run Ubuntu, Mint and Elementary OS live versions and liked all of them. I'm about to make the switch but have a few questions. First, when I install linux on the SSD for the OS system what format should I use? exFAT or EXT4 or other? The same question for the HHDs with several TBs of media, they're in NTFS currently but which format is best for the large files? I'm currently streaming media with Plex to a roku and the 4k and HDR work well, are there any issues with these not working on linux? Lastly, I have a lifetime membership to VPN Unlimited but their app doesn't work on linux, this is the correct way to use the VPN, correct?: https://proprivacy.com/guides/install-vpn-linux Thanks! Different backgrounds and icons on different workspaces? Posted: 30 Sep 2019 05:23 AM PDT Hello! Is there some program that lets you manage different workspaces, and customize them? Currently, every workspace is the same. I would like them to be different, so I can pretend they are different users, without the hassle of doing that. Distro: Debian XFCE Tnx! EDIT: Found something from 2012 what looks good: https://vajrasky.wordpress.com/ Don't know how to install .tar stuff, nor do I dare to try it. Maybe you guys know of a fork or something. Is this acceptable use of /dev/random Posted: 30 Sep 2019 06:46 AM PDT I'm using hexdump to generate a 32byte hex key for cryptographic use. does this look ok? It needs to: 1) not destroy the entropy pool (if it's ok to hexdump from /dev/random). 2) generate cryptographically secure key material. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Can't install GNOME Shell Extensions in Ubuntu 18.04. Posted: 30 Sep 2019 09:37 AM PDT I managed to install the Firefox add-on and the Host Controller (chrome-gnome-shell), but when I go to the GNOME Extensions website, find an extension that I want ("Unite", for example), and click the "ON" switch (one-click install), nothing happens. This has also happened in Chrome. EDIT: I realize that there's a Download drop-down box on the extensions page, but it seems like the ones I actually want to install don't come with How-To guides. Any ideas why this is happening? Suggestions? Thanks, all. [link] [comments] |

Need help reinstalling java after removing and purging Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:32 AM PDT So, I'm running Linux mint 19.2 kernel 5.3 Lately Java was having an issue after recently getting it updated, and removing it via commands like 'sudo apt-get remove' and then reinstalling it didn't actually uninstall everything and the issue peristed. So I purged it completely from my system using the chosen answer on askubuntu: https://askubuntu.com/questions/84483/how-to-completely-uninstall-java So, I ran 'sudo apt install default-jre' which put version 11.0.4 on my system. Except my system is refusing to use it, treating it as if it... "$java -version Command "java" not found, but can be installed with: sudo apt install default-jre sudo apt install openjdk-11-jre-headless sudo apt install openjdk-8-jre-headless $sudo apt install (insert any of the above 3 because I tried them all with the following result) : openjdk-11-jre-headless is already the newest version (11.0.4+11-lubuntu2~18.04.3)." So obviously completely wiping out any trace of java was probably a bit extreme... [link] [comments] |
