I used my 16 GB flash drive as extra RAM storage for my slow notebook. How dumb/smart is this?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:08 AM PDT

I was quite irritated with how slow my notebook (acer Aspire E3-111) that I plan on replacing soon was, so I used my flash drive in Readyboost mode to help the RAM a bit and so far I'm really enjoying the results. why do I not hear anyone talking about this ? Is this a good temporary solution or am I doing something terribly wrong here ? Can this be sustainable for a few months ?

    Laptop suggestions? Specific specs listed

Good battery life with either a 1050 or a 1650

Doesn't have to be a gaming laptop, I'm not gonna game but I can't use integrated Intel because I need to run solid works and other apps that are graphic intensive. But at the same time I need good battery life. I'm willing to have a shittier graphics card and have much better battery.

    14-15 inch, should be portable

I was considering the l340 gaming but I heard battery life is horrible even with the 1050. Any one know anything about this?

    Urgent- need to purchase today

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:36 PM PDT

I have Macbook Pro 13" (2019) 1.4GHz 8GB ram and 128GB SSD. I think I will need 16GB ram and 256GB SSD which will cost me $2,035 Canadian. I am thinking to exchange Macbook Pro with any of these laptops. Any guidance

Which one is the best value for money? Is $250 difference worth for HP 2060 to 2070 and 144Hz screen? If you recommend Asus is there a huge difference between 1060TI to 2060 and 2070?

    HP OMEN 15.6" Gaming Laptop - Shadow Black (Intel Core i7-9750H/1TB SSD/16GB RAM/GeForce RTX 2060) $1,799 Canadian

HP OMEN 15.6" with 144Hz Full HD screen Gaming Laptop (Intel Core i7-9750H/1TB SSD/16GB RAM/NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070/Win 10) $2,049 Canadian

    ASUS Zephyrus S Thin 15.6" 144Hz screen Gaming Laptop (Intel Core i7-9750H/512GB SSD/16GB RAM/NVIDIA GTX 1660Ti) $1,899 Canadian

    Missold laptop SVA not IPS?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:20 PM PDT

Hi there. I don't know if it's okay to post this here, but I hope someone may be able to advise me!

I live in the UK. I recently purchased a laptop from the store Currys/PC World. It's a HP Pavilion 14 ce5200sa.

The description of the laptop on their site was that it was an IPS screen but after unpacking and starting to use it I noticed it was very washed out in colour and the viewing angles are just frankly terrible. Upon looking at the official HP support website (and on the document for my laptop) and both state that it's an SVA screen. Their policy states that once I've opened and used the laptop that it's not possible to return it, but I spoke to someone earlier (before I found out this information) who said that if I've been missold then I may be able to on those grounds. However, I was wondering if someone knew this model, or had any experience with it.

I've attached an image of a picture I took at a 45 degree viewing angle which shows that it's more indicative of an SVA screen. This is from the site http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/viewing_angle.php

Just for the record, here is the description of my laptop on the Currys site: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-14-ce2500sa-14-intel-core-i3-laptop-256-gb-ssd-silver-10193422-pdt.html

and here is the official specs on the HP support knowledge base - https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c06391638

Does anyone think I'd be able to return the laptop on the grounds that I bought it thinking it had an IPS screen?

What should I buy for drawing/rendering?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 09:32 AM PDT

Hi! I'm looking for a laptop that has great pen support and that it is capable enough to do some mid/high photoshop tasks and light 3D/video rendering. I already have a very beefy desktop but I want a portable device that let me draw on it. 2in1's seem to be what I'm looking for.
    This is the problem:

    • Most 2in1's I've seen, either have integrated Intel Graphics or Nvidia's MX250.
    • The laptops that are (cheaper) and powerful enough, are branded as Gaming Laptops. None of them have pen support (as far as I know).
    • I don't want to buy a drawing tablet (I already have one). I'd like to draw ON the device screen.
    • Microsoft Surface Pro looks amazing but it is very underpowered and capable configs of them are stupidly expensive.

Is there any device you'd recommend for this case?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    what brand/model should I buy?

[troubleshooting] did i shortcircuit my laptop?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:50 AM PDT

A couple days ago I had water spilled on my Asus K45-VM laptop. I immediately pressed the physical button for it to shut down and after that removed the battery. I'm no technician myself, but I have some experience opening my PS4, iPhones, and some other electronics in general (I still don't have that technical know how, but I at least know what I shouldn't do) so I decided to open the laptop to take a look.

Well, I dried everything with a clean towel and a blow dryer for the parts I couldn't reach and it seemed fine. I proceeded to put everything back in its place and turned it on, but some of the keyboard keys were crazy.

When I typed the letter "a" it inputted "2a", for example. So, the next day I decided to open it again and let everything against my window so maybe the sunlight would help dry out (it was a cloudy, a bit rainy and cold day, so no excessive amounts of sunlight were present).

At night, I proceeded to put everything back in place, except for one thing. Well, the keyboard metal contact plate goes over the main board and it had a transparent plastic cover underneath it. It was kinda like those plastic screen covers that used to come with cheaper android phones and you would get rid of them immediately.

Well, it was glued to the plate by 4 glue stripes and I had removed it the previous day to dry the keyboard from its back, as the plastic was trapping a lot of moisture. I thought that maybe the plastic was bugging the keys, since it's glue stripes were trapping some dirt and I couldn't remove it easily without affecting the glue. With that in mind, I decided to remove it, mount everything and give it a try.

I first tried to turn it on with only the battery. The screen turned on, the Asus logo appeared for a second and then it turned off. I thought "well, the battery might've run out". It was a bit weird because I remembered it being charged, but whatever. So I plugged it in. Same thing happened. Laptop started for a second and turned off. After that, I just couldn't get it to turn on again, not even by plugging it in and removing the battery.

My conclusion: maybe the plastic thing was covering the keys not as a protection for an eventual water spillage, but as a protection for the board against the keyboard metal contact? It makes somes sense, I think.

Ah, I also tried a different thing on that second time I opened it up. For some reason, it came to my mind that it was a good idea to press the power button with the laptop open and the battery removed. "Take out static electricity from the system" I thought. Maybe it was in doing that that I fried it, also.

On that second time that I opened it up, I'd also forgot to remove the battery.

I'm thinking of taking it to the repair shop next Saturday for the guys to take a look and see if there's hope.

Any tips from you guys? I have this laptop since 2013 and I love it so much. It's an i7, 2GB GeForce gddr3 (does the job for me) 8GB ram and 500GB SSD. I really want it back.

Need help make a decision on laptop buy/fix decision

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:12 AM PDT

I currently have a 2-3 year old Dell latitude and its working OK. I bought it on blackfriday for 500ish and it has a 256 SSD i installed as the only "add on".

    Current issues:

    1. The touchscreen is worthless. It starts to act up (i think some particle collected on bottom) and it keeps thinking i am constantly pointing on the bottom - i had to turn it off.
    2. The power issue - the power insert is loose/broken and apparently many had similar issues. Basically the power plug doesnt stay intact - a slight motion of moving the laptop could make the power cord fall off. I did some research and if i were to get it fixed through repair person, it will cost ~200 for labor+ part IF the issue is fixed. That is about 1/2 of the laptop's value at this point.

I use the laptop for streaming, surfing and light game playing. I do play games but console is my go to so if i need a replacement i am not looking to pay like 3k+ for a gaming laptop.

Just wondering if it is better for me to see what's in store for black friday for a performance laptop (~1k) or get this fixed and let it carry for another year?

I did see an existing laptop that seems to be decent - not sure to jump on it or wait till november?:

    https://slickdeals.net/f/13406977-msi-gl75-raider-gaming-laptop-9th-gen-intel-core-i7-9750h-geforce-gtx-1660-ti-1080p-costco-online-only-starts-from-09-26-2019-1000?attrsrc=Test%3AHideExpiredSearch%3AHide%20Expired&src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo1

Also, if i want to keep my SSD contents, should i transfer data to a thumb drive then import into new laptop and sell the SSD or straightup switch SSDs? I believe i would need to fix windows install etc. if i switch.

    Thanks!

Why no sim card slots on laptops?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:06 AM PDT

Just wondering why most laptops don't have sim card slots for mobile Internet?

I know you can tether from your phone, but a separate connection sounds like it would be a good idea.

Any reason why this isn't the norm?

    Laptop Undervolting

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 03:16 AM PDT

(Just posted this on r/buildapc. Edit: It got taken down cause it was about a laptop)

So, I recently brought the Dell Inspiron 13 7391 for school as my old Surface Pro 4 was having battery and performance issues. I was super excited when I received it as it looks beautiful and it would be nice to have something better after 4 years. I turned it on, set everything up and went onto YouTube, after about 30 minutes the fans turn on so I feel the under the keyboard and it was uncomfortably warm (after download core temp it said the cpu was running at 50 degrees Celsius), although this seems pretty good it started to get uncomfortable on my lap after a bit. This is when I decided to do some investigating into laptop undervolting, unfortunately programs like Intel XTU and TechPowerUps Thermal Throttle Stop didn't work. Intel's one said that the CPU wasn't supported (i5 10210u) and Thermal Throttle Stop said it couldn't proceed because mfc120u.dll wasn't found, I think this was also because of the newer CPU. I just changed the power plan and that managed to drop the temperature by almost 10 degrees which is great but it is still a bit warm for my liking. Are there any other programs that can be used to undervolt a laptop?

    Thanks

(after typing all this it seems to have dropped even lower to 37 Degrees Celsius, is this better and is there even any reason to undervolt anymore)

    Lenovo Black Screen on Boot

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:55 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I have a lenovo t460 that is driving me around the bend.

I bought it second hand on ebay. The only problems listed with it were cracked screen, no ram or hdd. I thought to myself, I can replace them no problem and the price was fair.

The laptop arrived. I powered it on without the ram and hdd and I got some life on the lcd. Just a slight lightening for the dark black from the powered off state. I thought, that's strange....contacted the seller on ebay and he said that it was probably because of no ram. Fair enough, so I bought ram and a new lcd. Plugged them in and the same thing. A lightening of the black screen showing that power was getting to it but no output. No posting info whatsoever. The backlights on the keyboard light up and the fan spins momentarily. I tried a few of the suggestions regarding resetting the BIOS from various different forums. ie. holding the power down for 30 secs, removing the cmos battery, pressing f8 on boot. So I thought because the lcd was showing some life, it might be a bad lcd cable. I've seen it before where lcd cables get damaged over time with the constant opening and closing of the lid. Still no joy.

Finally, decided it has to be the motherboard/onboard integrated gpu (been sold a pup). I weighed up my options....considering I had spent money on new ram, lcd etc....I'll get my hands on a motherboard. I was lucky enough to find a reasonably priced new motherboard locally. Swapped it out and the exact same thing! So it's not the motherboard. I've tried everything I can think of, replaced most of the component parts and done quite a bit of googling. I've seen a number of postings where suggestions are given and after they have been tried/exhausted the last suggestion is.....new motherboard and most don't go down that route because motherboards are prohibitively expensive.

I've tried everything I can. I'm just wondering if anyone has a suggestion that maybe has passed me by. Is there a cable (other than the lcd) that can impact the lcd. I remember back in the day the backlight on an lcd could go and you could buy a new inverter cheap enough but they all seem to come as part of the lcd replacement unit and they are both exhibiting the same result.

Help me Obi Wans.....you're my only hope....lol

    MacBook Air 2017

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:12 AM PDT

    Hi,

I live in India and the prices of various 8 GB RAM laptops are:

MacBook Air 2017 base model with old keyboard: 750$

MacBook Air 2019 base model: 1350$

MacBook Pro 2019 base model: 1630$

    Dell XPS 9380: 2000$

    Lenovo X1 Carbon 7th Gen: 2100$

    Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Gen: 1730$

My original budget was around 1500 but would be great I can save money. I'm not a coder, PC gamer nor into heavy graphics editing. I however will type several thousand word mails/ briefs on it on a regular basis and run several chrome tabs with a spot of adobe premiere and photoshop for basic editing.

I'm just 25 and 1500$ would make up a not insignificant amount of my bankroll (10%ish).

Keeping in mind the above, are the newer Laptops good to justify me spending 200-400% the price on them when the cost is actually significant to me?

Also, thoughts on the old Apple keyboard?

Additionally, is there some grand Achilles heel I'm missing about the 2017 model which makes it a pain to use and not worth it?

    Thanks in advance.

It's quite embarrassing when PowerPoint takes ages to load just minutes before a presentation. Please help me out folks!
