    Huawei Matebook D 14" (Ryzen 5 2500U) OR Huawei Matebook D 15.6"(i5-8250U and Intel UHD Graphics 620)

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Pretty much the title of the thread, contemplating on which of the two laptops I should purchase.

    • The price between the two models is essentially the same in my country, they're only different by 5 euros or so.

    • As the name suggests, Huawei Matebook D 14 has a 14-inch display while the other model has a 15.6-inch display. As far as I'm aware, they're both at 1920x1080 resolution.

    • Both models have a 256GB SSD (6Gbps Data Rate)

    • No clue about battery life between the two models, as I can't seem to find all that much information.

    • Both models have 8GB of RAM. 14" has it soldered and non-upgradeable, not sure about 15.6". Though I believe the 14" model has a faster frequency.

    Rookie mistake takes away sanity

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 08:49 AM PDT

So I'm not new to kittens or laptops, but I am new to kittens who play on laptops. I've seen it all now from FB posts that make no sense to almost booking hotels with (Google assisted personal info fill ins), but the one that takes the cake is that my now 7month old kitten has inverted my screen colors (not my icons?). So I figured I could simply hop into magnifier and adjust it from the settings there, but the strangest thing happens. I cannot toggle anything to change. I can access anything on the screen except the buttons to change color blindness and color inversion. I can even switch to a different settings page or something else and click away. Is there an easy fix for this or should I get some help in town?

I've looked online and can't find anything about this model or batteries for this model.

    Laptop ugradeability ?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 05:08 AM PDT

Recently bought an Ideapad/Yoga 730s for half-off! Curious about something, though.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 11:03 AM PDT

Everywhere I seemed to look, the reviews were killer. That said, I can't find anyone on Reddit specifically talking about this model. Did I miss something here? Given I got a $1k laptop for $550-ish straight from the company itself, I'm not gonna complain if it's not perfect, but seriously, why isn't anyone talking about it or recommending it as a decent consumer laptop?

Edit: For clarity, I have seen it /mentioned/ on Reddit. Just no real in-depth discussion and minimal recommendations.

    GTX 1070 Max-Q vs. RTX 2060

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 02:20 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I am looking to purchase a laptop and wanted to get some info that I'm having trouble finding. All else kept the same, which card runs cooler RTX 2060 or GTX 1070 Max-Q? Is there an appreciable difference? All else kept the same, which one is more power-hungry? Also, since a lot of people say RTX isn't worth it on laptops since not 4K, would the benefits of RTX transfer if I planned on hooking the laptop to a 4K monitor through HDMI?

    Thanks!

Looking for an SSD for an ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 01:07 PM PDT

Looking to replace my HDD with a SSD for my main drive and moving the HDD to a storage drive

I was looking at this Samsung 860 EVO.

I'm trying to figure out if it's compatible with my ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71. From what I've read, only one of my drive bays has a SATA/PCEi port while the other is strictly PCEi.

Do the drives need to be in a specific bay depending on whether or not they hold the OS/system files, or can I just put them wherever they fit?

calling all Zbook 15 gen 1/2 owners!!

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 10:27 AM PDT

I have bought a gen 1 zbook 15, for school and for classic wow, it's more than perfect and fits all my needs. Unfortunately I have a battery from 2011.. it dies and I want to look at either a replacement for it, or supplementing it with an auxiliary battery. Maybe both if I'm feeling generous. If you've bought an auxiliary battery, how do you like it? How heavy is it? Does it feel like you're going to snap the connection off if you actually use it as a laptop and are moving with it? Does/has it caused any over heaving issues? Does it get hot when using it? Or charging it? Thanks in advance.

Upgrade my Dell inspiron 15 5547

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 10:16 AM PDT

So I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5547. She's old and recently seemed to get much much slower to being almost unusable. I'm leaving to serve in the Peace Corps in Africa in January and would rather not have to buy a new laptop incase it were to get stolen or damaged. Any suggestions on what I can do to speed it up or what parts I can switch out to give me another 2 years or so?

    Photo editing Laptop

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 09:45 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** 2600€-3000€ Maximum , Italy

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I like the 2 in 1 form factor, a decent, at least, battery life; Between a 2 in 1 and better performance I prefer better performance
    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I prefer a laptop that weights maximum 2,5kg
    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I'm used to Windows, but I've used also Mac * *Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I preffer 15,6"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I use Lightroom and Photoshop regularly for photo editing, and I do video editing with Da Vinci Resolve 16
    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A good screen with wide gamut and high resolution

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** After searching and searching I'm a bit confused and I don't know if I'm spending more for what I need.
    I was considering some options:

    -Dell XPS 15 7590 (with i7, 16gb ram, 512-1tb, 4k touch)

-Asus Zenbook Pro Duo (i7 version, but I don't know the price yet here in Italy)

    -Hp ZBook Studio x360 (i7 8750h, 16gb, 512gb, 4k) - actually there's a promo at 2099€

At the moment I don't need it yet, so I'm also curios about the next generation of Surface, but I'll have to wait 1 month.

Any suggestion from who has bought a computer for photo editing purpose?

    Need help choosing between 2pcs

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 09:44 AM PDT

Hello, I am looking to buy a new PC for university but I can't decide.

In mind I have the Lenovo Legion y540 (i5 9300h + 1650 4gb model) and the Acer Nitro5 (i7 9750h+ 1650 4gb model) (the rest of the specs are the same). Where I'm buying them, they are currently at the same price because the Nitro5 is 200$ off.

On the one hand, I am more of a performance guy so even though I think the legion looks a lot better, I'd still prefer the best performing one which would obviously be the Nitro but, after researching, it is clear that the nitro has thermal issues under load, i've seen a lot of posts showing that the Nitro thermal throttles a lot and things like changing thermal paste / cooling pad won't help much and would need to underclock the CPU which would defeat the purpose of getting a better CPU, right? This is a problem that the Lenovo doesn't seem to have since it has an individual cooling layout for the CPU/GPU where the Nitro kinda shares the heatpipes causing it to develop a lot of heat overtime.

    help please?

    Swapping Screens

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 08:32 AM PDT

I internally cracked the screen on my Lenovo Ideapad S145. I have a 2018 Dell Inspiron 3000 that I don't use. Same screen size, 15.6.

Anyone know if I can just swap the good screen for the cracked one?

    IdeaPad S340 vs HP Pavilion 14 (i5)

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 02:12 AM PDT

Hi all my school currently is offering discounts for students and these two laptops are within my budget and are in the weight range I am looking for. My main uses for the laptop will be portable light office/browser work and light gaming (world of Warcraft on low graphics). I have a desktop at home so this would not be my staple computer.

The HP pavilion 14 is the i5 version with 513 PCie SSD.

My main concerns are the durability of the HP laptop as some of my peers have attested to HP builds being subpar. My question is which of the two computers are better for long term use? The HP is slightly more expensive but at a neglible amount. Any advice or personal experiences would be welcome as it is my first time purchasing a laptop.

    Thank you in advance!
