can not access my tplink anymore Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:58 PM PDT long story short, it was configured as router, which throttled transmissions, configured into access point. now my cellphones do not have access to the internet even though my nintendo switch does wirelessly and my laptop as well, i can not enter the configuration of my now access point to meddle anything there now, laptop has internet, nintendo switch has internet both in docked mode(wired to the access point) and wireless, laptop(wireless), and firestick(wireless) 192.168.15.1 is the ISP one and that one is locked out of me. and the usual addresses are not available. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:24 PM PDT I have an OpenVPN server setup in asia and have it connected to my home ddwrt router in Florida so all my wifi devices look like I'm in my home in asia. I tested the openvpn connection with my laptop using the OpenVPN client for windows and I get a 20mbps connection, but if I connect it with my ddwrt router I get only a 2 mbps connection. It's an old netgear router with ddwrt flashed to it. I'm thinking the reason is because of my router and its not enough power to decrypt the connection? What is a good router for what I am trying to do? [link] [comments] |

Home wired with Media Enclosure (Leviton) - taking advantage with AT&T Fiber? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:17 PM PDT I've been in my home 4 years and am a bit of a networking newbie. I have 1 GBPS AT&T fiber so my internet is great especially when I am plugged in directly. My AT&T wireless router is currently in my office and is plugged into a cat5 plug on the wall. In the office is my PC that I use cat5 to hardwire into the AT&T router. This is where most of my media/movies/music are stored that can be streamed to other rooms in the house. In one of our bedroom closets there is a Structured Media Enclosure by Leviton (https://imgur.com/pDMq5bs). I would like our living room to have access to ethernet for the Shield TV/media center as opposed to using wireless like I currently do. There is a cat5 plug in the living room and I assume it is wired back to the Structured Media Center box. What do I need to do? I have no idea what that green chipboard is in my closet from Leviton. Thank you!!! [link] [comments] |
Is it normal for a router to make noise when a wireless device is being used? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 04:27 PM PDT I have the Netgear R7000 and it's located in my room close to my PC. I've had it for over two years and so far it's been working flawlessly. However, about a month ago, it started making an intermittent humming noise whenever someone else in the house is watching a YouTube video on their tablet. It does this with both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals. I have very good hearing and I'm very sensitive to noise, so this has been annoying me a lot lately, to the point where I'm thinking of changing my router. Is this something that all routers do or is it just mine? [link] [comments] |
Need help choosing mesh or router Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:28 PM PDT Hello I am having troubles at home with Wifi strength. I have been using Speedtest to test the speed in living room and bedroom. In bedroom the speed dropped to half and have terrible ping. I'm also using small wifi extender from tp link but still have issues. I'm thinking to get either a router or mesh but I don't know which is suitable within a budget of 150-200. Please provide suggestions. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Accessing camera NVR from external network - best method? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:46 PM PDT Here's what I'm trying to figure out. I'm trying to setup a NVR camera system for somebody's office. I initially set it up for them through port forwarding from a TP-Link router that is connected to a static IP address from ISP that isn't used by any other devices in this person's office. I did advice them to look into something else as port forwarding isn't secure. I did use different port numbers instead of default 80 and changed NVR password as that was the least I could do. I've heard about setting up OpenVPN to access the camera's remotely. It seems like a pretty easy thing to setup. The TP-Link router is running DD-WRT and it should have the OpenVPN options for username and password. Then I guess I download the config file and install OpenVPN on the devices the person wants to remote view the cameras. Is that correct? The owner wants to access the camera viewing on his iPad and Windows PC, which work with port forwarding. Would OpenVPN work on iOS and is there a way to use the config file on iOS? Here's where I'm getting a bit confused. I looked into this a bit further and found out I should setup a separate VLAN and not allow the NVR to access the Internet. I have no clue how to set any of this up. Is that necessary for this use case? I have fairly limited networking knowledge, but if this is doable by the average person with decent tech literacy, I can look into this if you think I should. Essentially this is the current setup. The camera is connected to a TP-link router that is connected to a static IP address from ISP. Port forwarding is enabled to access the camera from remote location on Windows PC and iPad. All other devices this office uses is connected to firewall routers that was setup by IT professionals on the other static IP addresses. This business is a part of a franchise, so the computers and business equipment is setup by the IT people sent by the franchise company. Only the NVR is connected to the TP-Link router (wi-fi disabled too). None of the other devices run off of it. I know this isn't exactly home networking, but I was hoping somebody could help from here. [link] [comments] |
Can I use my Modem/Router combo with an existing modem? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:40 PM PDT Hello - I recently moved to a new location and have been struggling with slow internet (specifically ping spikes); after some investigation, I've confirmed the issue is with the router. I have a Motorola AC1600 modem-router combo on-hand, but as I am a tenant, I cannot replace the existing modem - I can only replace the router. I've tried connecting my modem-router combo directly to the modem and turning off DHCP, but while my Windows laptop can connect to that perfectly fine, my Macbook and phone both cannot get an IP address from the network. Is this a configuration issue, or do I need to buy a router-only unit? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:17 PM PDT My home network in a Leviton 24" media cabinet. Ubiquiti USG, 60W POE 8-port switch (only 4 ports are POE), with 8 port switches in our bonus room and guest room, AC Pro, AC Lite and AC In-wall for WAPs. Solid Wi-Fi coverage and gigabit in every room. AT&T symmetrical 1Gb internet as the WAN. [link] [comments] |
Better router, wifi extender, something else? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:10 PM PDT Having a problem getting wifi signal in living room. Didn't have any problems when I first moved in but the last couple months the wifi strength has been very inconsistent. Often losing signal strength for an hour or 2 before it goes back to normal multiple times a day. The total distance doesn't seem far, approx 7-8m but the signal is travelling through 2 other rooms before it gets to the living room. Do you think I'd get better results from a better router than the standard cheap thing my isp provides or would a wifi extender be a better option? Any advice before I go and spend money would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Quality/Reliable/Affordable 8 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:03 PM PDT I was looking at the Netgear GS-308 but the reviews on Amazon say that after like 6 months. Should I just get the Netgear GS-108 ProSafe? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2019 02:57 PM PDT I am renting a basement suite with internet included in my package, and I'm currently using the wifi from my landlords router and it is working okay currently, but I am wondering if there are any alternatives. We have what look to be old phone ports throughout the unit, and I'm wondering if it's possible to hook the modem up to one of these and then hook an ethernet cable to the outlet near my playstation to get a wired connection. We also have coaxial plugs in the walls in a couple spots, but as far as I know that wouldn't work to try and set up a second router/modem from the same connection. I also have my own router, could I hook my router up to their modem and have a second network? Would that increase my speeds if it was being used by less people? Any help is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Trendnet TEG-S81g “Gigabit” Switch is only giving 100mbps max. Anyone else have this issue? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 02:48 PM PDT Edit: I did some research and found under specifications that the data transfer is 100 mbps when it is a a half duplex for "fast Ethernet " so I guess that's what I am getting. Any idea how I get the "gigabit" speed? (2000 mbps full-duplex) [link] [comments] |

NETGEAR 1200s PowerlineAdapter Problems Posted: 28 Sep 2019 10:20 AM PDT I bought these powerline adapters from eBay in new condition for a great deal, $40. However, when I plugged them in, they only gave me 20 Mbps – less than 2% of its max speeds, 1200 Mbps. My router is in my basement, and my laptop (where I plugged these into) is in my room, which is about 2 floors up. Apparently, there is no way to bring the router to the middle floor. Does anyone have any tips or ways to fix this? [link] [comments] |
AT&T fiber coming on Tuesday. Use my Netgear Nighthawk X6 or use their equipment? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:40 PM PDT Hello, I have a NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 Smart WiFi Router (R8000) - AC3200 Tri-band Wireless Speed (up to 3200 Mbps) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KWHMR6G/ref=pe_825000_114212990_TE_FOCE_n_id AT&T are installing their highest tier of fiber in my home in a few days (1,000 meg per second download speeds). Their device, I'm not familiar with what it is, has built in wifi. I feel like I am better off asking them to just set their device as a gateway, and I should just continue using my router. Right? I also have my Xbox One X and PS4 wired directly to the Nighthawk. Just overall, the router is still better than their equipment right? I haven't had AT&T in over a decade, but their equipment was always crap in my experience. My gut feeling is that things probably haven't changed... I'm paying $123 a month for 200 meg Suddenlink and switching to AT&T fiber 1000 meg speed for $60 a month. Seems like a no brainer. Any feedback is appreciated. I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision by sticking with my router. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:19 AM PDT I recently bought my first domain (yay!) and as probably most of us here my ISP provides me with a non-static public IP. The thing is, I have a few raspberrys at home and one of them is a basic PiVPN server, it works but only up until my IP changes because I have to re-do the certificates and OVN config file and somehow send them back to my devices that use them via email or some which IMO completely defies the purpose of a VPN. I made a simple bash script with a cron task which connects via FTP to my web domain and updates a file with my current public IP. I'm allowed up to 20 subdomains, for example I could set up vpn.example.com to point to my public IP address, what is the best way for me to make it so this DNS record is self-updating, referencing the file that my bash script writes on where my home public IP is stored? Should I use PHP/Perl or something of the sort? Is this even doable? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Router for online gaming / ps4 remote / steam remote Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:50 AM PDT Hello, I'm still using my box router and I'd like to get a router for upgrading my network and having better performances while using ps4 remote play and steam remote play. I've seen that a new wifi tech as been released with AX and I wonder if it worth taking this kind of router (like asus AX88U and netgear nighthawk AX6000). I mainly remote play from my PS4 or my main computer to my laptop. Both PS4 and main computer are wired. The laptop may be wired or wireless. I also play games directly from my laptop (like battlefield, call of duty, wow...). I don't really know what to take to get good performances and get rid of my internet provider router. Thanks for the help. Edit : got a good fiber connection 300mbits/S [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:59 AM PDT Hi there, I recently moved into a new apartment with friends, set up the network, but there are some dead spots where my phone cant really get a good signal. So I found an old router (Motorola SB5101) in the closet, which i believe belong to the previous tenants who did not take it with them while moving out. after plugging it in, I found a network with the name starting with "MOTO", and assumed that should belong to the old router that I've found, but I couldn't find the right password for it. (Either it is not printed on the back of the modem, or the previous owners changed the password) Is there a way to work around this and have access to this router? [link] [comments] |
Testing Ethernet cable with laptop? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:52 AM PDT Just wired my house with CAT6 cable, and I'm not getting any connectivity from my cables. I'm using a MAC Filter Table to allow certain devices, but my LG TV will not connect Posted: 28 Sep 2019 10:48 AM PDT We have an outdated/discontinued AT&T DSL service which still functions for members who have been "grandfathered in". The laptops, tablets, and cellphones in the house are constantly dropping the wifi and picking it back up; if a password was enabled you have to type the password in every few seconds. For this reason we have disabled it. But some neighborhood kids like to hide in the bushes next door and leech off of the Wi-Fi, so we have set up a MAC Filter Table that only allows specific devices to use the service. I have gathered MAC addresses from cell phones (Apple and Android), laptops, and my own personal computer and they all work fine. Unfortunately the LG TV we have will not connect to the network, even with the MAC address in the table. Is there any way I can fix this? Note: A few years ago AT&T ran a fiber optic cable down to a bridge that opens into our neighborhood. Everyone who lives before the bridge gets the new service; everyone across the bridge (like us) continue to use the old, outdated service. The only alternative is satellite internet, which is absolutely horrendous. [link] [comments] |
Wired devices on FiOS gigabit getting only 10% Posted: 28 Sep 2019 10:30 AM PDT Ran the Verizon speed test and the router is getting 930Mbps down, but devices that are wired over Cat5e are getting 90Mbps; wireless devices get around 300Mbps. Device drivers are UTD and all cable is new gigabit rated Cat5e. Not sure what to start testing [link] [comments] |
