Home Networking I have three floors in my house, my router is in the basement(likely to be moved soon). I have poor mbps on the third floor. Is it worth it to install an Ethernet port near my router and then install one in my bedroom where my desktop is in order to get the speeds I’m paying for?

Since I don't want to screw anything up would it be wise to ask my isp to install the Ethernet jacks or should I ask some other party to do so?

Edit: speeds parents be paying for.

Can I use an old Linux PC as a router?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:44 AM PDT

My router capabilities and interface are very limited, so I recently had a blast when I came to know Pi-hole. Now I use an old NUC to block ads and monitor my wifi traffic. So now I wonder: could I use this PC even more? Maybe set up an wifi access point and even balancing two different internet connections so I keep the lan always online.

    Suggestions? Thanks!

Google DNS made my Internet jittery and latent

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:54 PM PDT

I am opening up this discussion to talk about how Google DNS caused many issues in my Internet. I started using Google DNS 5 years ago for its reputation of being reliable and available at all time. I have always seen it recommended on Rockstar Games, Ubisoft websites etc... as a good DNS for video games, however my online video gaming has always been mediocre with a noticeable sync problems. I believed that it's the way it is and I should accept. I tried many routers to see if it's a hardware issue but no difference. Live streams would always cut occasionally and Skype video calls were always not clear and seamless.

I discovered this accidentally when I had enough and decided to use 4G through a hot spot on my phone, I noticed that it my PS4 can't connect to Internet because I had it using Google DNS, so I changed it to automatic so it can retrieve the DNS address from the carrier. Everything worked perfectly and it struck my mind to use ISP dns while using my adsl connection; I did and voilà everything worked as good as on 4G. Streaming live videos worked like a charm with no buffering, online gaming experience improved drastically and video calling is much clearer and stable. Everything is just 10 times better now.

Not really sure if this is going to be the same experience with everybody, but if you feel like your Internet has some issue with it, try Open DNS, Cloudflare DNS, or even your ISP's dns and see if that changes anything. Also, I can't explain why this happened with Google DNS, even the ping time to Google DNS is around 40ms. Could it have something to do with my ISP throttling requests to Google DNS to force people to use their DNS?

Edit: TL;DR: Google DNS ruined my experience with live video streaming and online gaming, I changed the dns to my ISP's and all the issues are solved.

    Portforwarding Game Server Issue

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:58 PM PDT

Does any have an idea where I port forward ports for the game The Isle and it shows up in the server list for anyone outside of my network like it should but me myself on my network im hosting from can't see the server or join it.

I've tried disabling literally anything security related everywhere, modem and pc included.

It just makes no sense, its completely opposite when everyone else can see it and join the server but me myself the host cannot see it. Any ideas?

Need help to find source of high latency/pingtimes

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:51 PM PDT

for 3 days now my internet is unbearably slow and now decided to try to find out what is causing it. For this i used PingPlotter. As i understand it the problem does not seem to originate from my end but starts at this ip. I don't know if this belongs to my isp or if it is something else. Here is also a image of the "trace"? (im sorry, i don't know if this is the right word). What would be my next step to fix my problem?

    any help is greatly appreciated

    Looking for a sanity check

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:31 PM PDT

I am looking at setting up a mesh network in my house using asus routers. I am going to have the master router in the front room and then from there have hardlines going to the back of the house to connect a node and upstairs to connect a node.

Along with this I am going to run hardlines for wall jacks in each of the bedrooms and one for the back of the house.

The hardlines are going to be used to connect streaming devices and desktops.

I assume there should be no problem with my plan but I'm asking to make sure there is nothing I am missing or need to keep in mind.

Is this modem/router combo good for 75 mbps internet, 625 sq ft apartment?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:05 PM PDT

I know very little about networking. Before checking out this sub, I was set on a modem/router combo from Best Buy, but I have learned of the advantages of buying separate devices. Here is what I came up with:

    Modem: ARRIS SB6183

    Router: TP-Link Archer C7

Uses/devices: 1x hardwired desktop for gaming, 2x smartphones, 1x smart tv for streaming, (infrequent) laptop for work, (infrequent) laptop for gaming/streaming

If this is not the best combo, I would appreciate suggestions. My budget is $150-$200. Thanks a bunch!

What's the best way to join or splice Cat5e cables together?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 11:30 AM PDT

I found the WAN line into my apartment was connected to the run from my ethernet Jack with idc connectors (commonly called 3m scotchlocks). I've seen a post saying that's a big no no and those are only forn telephone cables. I was just wondering if it's affecting speed and what I should replace it with if it is.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/11Eb2mysR1nDEG6b0fE2Jl3RHxqqBXAcN/view?usp=drivesdk

Verizon had the boxes outside open and it looks like the main line in is done the same way.

    Best mesh wifi system?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:03 PM PDT

I have a 100mbs wifi in my 3500 sqft house but the set up from the internet company does not reach most of the upstairs rooms and almost 1/3 of my main floor. The problem is that we have thick walls in the house which I think disrupts the connection and causes slow speeds and inconsistent connection. One of the repair men came by and told me to look into a mesh wifi system and recommended the google mesh wifi which I'm reading mixed reviews about. Any suggestions on what's the best one?

Problems with ARRIS Touchstone DG340 Cable Gateway

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 01:47 PM PDT

Posting here because my ISP (Northland Communications) has been of no help at all to this point; I honestly feel like the tech support may know less about the subject than I do, which isn't much to begin with.

We upgraded our home internet from 100mbps to 1gbps. The tech came out and replaced our existing equipment with an Arris Touchstone DG3450 Cable Gateway. He proudly showed us an Ookla Speedtest of about 850 mbps and left. Since then, I've had the following problems (that didn't exist previously with our 100mbps service): Alexa randomly disconnects and has to reconnect. Our computer that isn't connected via network cable frequently has to have the network adapter reset to regain Wifi. Our television has to buffer channels frequently (it'll start at 480, then 720, then 1080; this happened instantaneously in the past), despite being connected via network cable. Lastly, World of Warcraft has developed extreme latency for absolutely no reason, that tech support there has stated is almost certainly localized, after having me run WinMTR and other tests.

Tech support, which is 24/7 and almost certainly outsourced, seems to feel that turning it off and on should fix everything. My question: Can anyone tell what is most likely occurring, based on what I stated above? Should I be swapping this out for another identical box, or is the Arris equipment itself not adequate? As it stands now, the 100mbps service was better in almost every way, and I'm on the verge of simply swapping back. Thought I'd ask the advice/opinion of those who actually have knowledge first. Thanks!

Should I upgrade from TP-Link Archer C6 to ASUS RT-AC58U WiFi Router? (More details in post)

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:36 PM PDT

I purchased a TP-Link Archer C6 WiFi router about 5 months ago with a 60 Mbps connection, and it has been giving problems with my Xiaomi Android TV (2.4 GHz; Running on Android Pie) like hell. It keeps kicking it out too often. Have to reconnect to WiFi in every 5 to 15 minutes.

It doesn't occur when I use mobile hotspot.

It happens even when no other devices are connected to the router. Also, on the TV, I always get close to 53 Mbps speed.

However, that issue occurs rarely with any other devices. On my laptop (Which supports 2.4 GHz only) it is being kicked out only while downloading torrents.

And, sometimes, while streaming on TV, the router kicked out all 3 devices connected to the 2.4 GHz network. Had to reconnect the WiFi on each one of them.

This router was released last year and the firmware is up-to-date (Last updated on February 2019)

Should I instead get ASUS RT-AC58U, which costs somewhat double comparatively?

But, I noticed it was released in 2013 and the firmware was last released on January 2019.

So, should I get it? Or stay with the Archer C6 I have?

    Connected, no internet.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:20 PM PDT

But when I get closer to the router the internet pops back up, I'm upstairs and the internet here works just fine far from the router but sometimes in the evening it tells me there's no internet. Any ideas what could be causing the problem? I don't want to power off and on the router every time this happens, it's the only thing that fixes the issue.

Visibility of Camera on Shared WiFi?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 08:01 PM PDT

Hoping to get some clarification on setting up ring cameras on a shared wireless network.

We came home a couple times now to our deadbolt unlocked. I bought some indoor ring cameras to set up pointing at our front door and back porch.

We're the middle apartment of a triple decker and the whole building shares wifi from the landlord who happens to live on the first floor and also happens to be a creepy ass.

Will he see that I connected cameras to his network? If so, can he block my cameras access to the internet or log into them and see inside our home? Is there a way I can hide the cameras from the network or name them something inconspicuous so he doesn't know what's connected?

Obviously we think it's our landlord. Wife said he made her skin crawl one day she was home from work and this started happening shortly after.

Asus CM-32 AC2600 stuck in bridge mode

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:43 PM PDT

Just purchased a new Asus CM-32 AC2600 Modem/router. All hooked up and got it verified by spectrum. Works well over ethernet but does not provide internet over wifi (but wifi is showing up on other devices) I logged in to the routers GUI and everything looks normal but it is locked in bridge mode. Is this a problem? It is on its own and has no accessories plugged in to it.

Devices Won’t Connect to 5ghz network but 2.4ghz works?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:48 PM PDT

Hello everyone, thank you very much in advance.

I moved yesterday, and am trying to get my home network up.

I know my modem is split to 2 channels 2.4 and 5 ghz, the 2.4 is working, but the 5 says my password is incorrect. I've changed the name of the network and password multiple times, reset everything multiple times, and can't get it to work. I have the tv going on the 2.4 channel as we speak, but the 5 network password won't recognize the password, it's the same password as the other channel, and I'm certain I'm not entering it erroneously.

I hardwire the laptop to the modem and it gives me the name of the network prior to me changing it, and works fine...not sure what this means.

    Anyone have any idea?

Router for lte lb 1120 modem?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:32 PM PDT

Hi guys after asking on here it looka like I need a router. I am using the ipad plan in a lte lb1120 modem and now I need a router to plug it into so there is Wi-Fi.

This is for my parents who live in the country so something reliable and decent speed. Their alternitive is crappy dsl thing that if lucky on a good day got 3mps. Most of the time its 1 or under. So spending a ton for top of the line would be a waste. They were happy with the portable mifi hotpspot when it got 15-20 mps.

So I would like something that is as close to plug and play as possible.

What is a good affordable router that is easy to setup?

AT&T gigabit gateway diagnostic says I'm getting full speed but only averaging 500 mbps based on speedtests

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:35 AM PDT

    Hi!

I recently upgraded to a gigabit connection (I needed unlimited data).

They changed the gateway to bgw210-700. My computer is directly connected to it with a CAT6 cable.

I've used different speed testing sites (testmy.net, speedtest.net, dslreports, etc) Across I'm only getting an average of about 500mbps. Tested different servers as well.

    Here's a screenshot of my AT&T diagnostic:

    https://imgur.com/a/bup89FK

I already changed my ethernet to see if that's the problem. I turned off my NIC's power saving feature.

I'm stuck and not sure what to do. I assume that since I'm getting correct speed on my gateway, the issue will be past the gateway. Any ideas?

Would google fiber have hooked up internet to Ethernet wall jacks around the house?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:37 PM PDT

I just moved into a townhome I am renting, hooked my pc (no WiFi card, I use cables) up to the Ethernet wall jack and I can't get internet. Tried 3 other cables, no luck.

Owner/roommate said previous owner had spectrum, but they have google fiber installed downstairs now. They only use WiFi, but Modem/router doesn't look like it can be moved from where it's at bc the google fiber wall thing basically looks permanent. It has 1 Ethernet from that to the modem, power cable, and 4 non-used ports.

Would google fiber tech have hooked it up somehow to the pre-existing Ethernet wiring in the house, or do they not do that?

I may try to order 2 MoCA adapters.. does Best Buy normally carry these?

Thanks, just trying to resolve ASAP as I work from home a lot.

    A couple questions regarding DNS

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:34 PM PDT

Xfinity does not let us change the DNS via the router admin panel so I've manually changed the DNS on all devices to:

    9.9.9.9 149.112.112.112 2620:fe::fe 2620:fe::9

Should I leave the Local Network Nameserver of "10.0.0.1" in that list or remove it?
Also, in the "Search Domains" section of several devices it it pre-filled with "hsd1.ca.comcast.net".
Should that be left alone or should I change it?

    Thanks!

    Speed loss through internet switch?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:34 PM PDT

Hello, I'm using a Netgear FS116 switch and I'm getting huge speed loss. If directly connected to the modem i get 112+ download speed. If i connect from modem - switch - computer, it drops to 60. Is this supposed to happen like this? at one time i was getting 75+ and then it dropped. i would not have noticed but for an email i got that told me xfinity was boosting me to 100+ mbps. so i started to check everyday and after that email i was at 60 mbps. down from the 75 i was at before the email. i was using the netgear c3700 combo modem and then i got a new c7000 combo modem and after that was stup my speed was slower. i did not try to connect to that modem as i took it off and put the c3700 back on. but my speed is faster with my pc plugged into the modem than it is with the switch. does anyone have some tips to troubleshoot this? thanks

Help me figure this brainteaser out

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:23 PM PDT

Ok so I have a Spectrum modem on the 2nd floor in bridge mode. There is a cat5 cable running downstairs to my Netgear router. Then splits off to different devices.

I want to add an Ubiquiti Unifi Access point upstairs. When I plug it into a Modem port, it powers on. However I can't find it to install on the network. I'm assuming if I plug it directly into rouer downstairs it will work.

How can I get this working upstairs with only one wire? Running a second one is not really an option. I was looking at switches but can't think of a way it would work?

    Pfsense with ATT Question

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:09 PM PDT

I wanted to test out pfsense, so today I took an extra machine I had and installed pfsense on it. I connected the WAN interface to an Ethernet port off of my AT&T modem. 192.168.1.254 is modem, 192.168.1.11 is WAN interface on pfsense.

I don't have a switch or an extra Ethernet NIC on that machine. So for my clients, I just told them to point their default gw to 192.168.1.11. I added some interface rules allowing 80/443 outbound, DNS, etc. I also looked up league of legends ports, added those as well. I see a lot of blocks for 443 and looked it up saying that a cause could be asymmetric routing. I couldn't get into a league of legends game, even though it let me on the client. For giggles, I also noticed that sometimes I have to enter urls into the bar twice before it loads.

Is the problem that I'm on one interface and not working off of a LAN interface from pfsense?

Can I Use A Router With A WAP?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:46 AM PDT
