How to host a server at home?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 09:15 AM PDT

Hello redditors, finally I got fiber and a public static IP address in my house. Now I need some servers (not the best thing but I need them for home automation, video surveillance, VPN, etc.) but I'm not sure how to configure the network.

This is my situation: https://imgur.com/a/vtotZJd (the DMZ is not yet configured, I don't have any subnet).

Basically the ISP gateway is useless (I can only forward ports, assign static IP addresses and little more). Than I have an old fully configurable gateway running OpenWRT.

I know in a proper DMZ my servers should be in the middle, between internet and my LAN but unfortunately this is the only way to go I can think about.

How should I configure a firewall and a subnet in order to be as secure as possible?

Installed two GoCoax MOCA 2.5 adapters today

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 11:56 AM PDT

I replaced two Actiontech ECB2500C MOCA 1.1 adapters with the two goCoax adapters and immediately saw improved performance. I upgraded our Internet service to 500/500 fiber a few weeks ago, but was still only getting 100/100 at my basement entertainment center due to the older MOCA standard. Now I am seeing 500/500 on all the devices in the basement.

I'll probably re-purpose the old Actiontec units for locations where I want consistent performance, but don't need the maximum speed. So far, the two brand's boxes co-exist nicely on the MOCA network (as designed), with the Actiontech's still delivering 100/100.

I'm quite happy with the goCOAX product. Easy to install and use. Better pricing than the Actiontec or Motorola MOCA 2.0 products.

Why are modem wireless combos considered not any good other than WiFi range?

As the title asks, are WiFi modem combos just not any good due to WiFi range and other features or am I missing something else? Thanks!

How do multiple managed switches work?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 09:59 AM PDT

I am a networking noob and looking at setting up at least two managed switches at home. One main switch(switch1) next to router (R7000), then another switch(switch2) in the garage to handle half IOT devices and half home server devices.

    • Lets say switch1 port 15 output to switch2, but switch2 i want all ports except port 1 to be vlan3, does the vlan tag just carry over across the network? So switch 2 has port 1 on vlan2 and then the rest of the stuff is vlan3.

    • The R7000 wont support this, so im trying to wrap my head around everything before I upgrade the network to something else.

5Ghz router ethernet download speed problem

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 06:54 AM PDT

I just bought 5Ghz router and tested every download speed while downloading game on steam:

    2.4Ghz - 7 Mbps

    5 Ghz - 9-19 Mbps (inconsistent) [speedtest - ping 4 / download 209 / upload 243]

5 Ghz ethernet cable - 40 Mbps but then drops to 500 Kbps or even 0 sometimes [speedtest - forgot numbers but little bit higher then 5 Ghz without cable]

What could be problem with ethernet cable connection? Im using laptop but after few days i will get my new pc. if its just laptop problem then its fine for me.

One more question: my company i pay internet for gives me 350Mbps. Router i bought have 300Mbps 2.4Ghz and 886 5Ghz. I will definetly use 5Ghz on my new pc and want to have best speed i can get. But can my mom use her laptop and use 5Ghz and wont it make my internet speed slower? And also what if phones are also connected to 5Ghz? Or should all other devices stay connected to 2.4Ghz?

How close should you be to your router for 5GHz Wi-Fi to be optimal?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 10:55 AM PDT

I've read that 5GHz is quicker when in close proximity to your router compared to 2.4GHz.

    How close is close?

Help Replacing Xfinity Rental Unit with Compatible Alternative for 250mbps Service

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 12:26 PM PDT

    Hey /r/HomeNetworking,

For about the past year, I've rented an Arris TG1682G (Wireless Gateway) & Arris T25 (Cable Modem) via Comcast for my 100mbps package in for my 1BR rowhome.
At the end of September, I am transitioning service to a new, slightly bigger 2BR rowhome with 250mbps, dropping the cable portion of the package. I would like to purchase my own unit to nix the ~$15/mo that is regularly charged for rental. I commonly use 2 - 5 devices at a time (Windows Laptop, Xbox One X, iPad, (2) Android Smartphones) amongst 2 individuals.

With that being said, I would greatly appreciate some recommendations on brands/devices. Before you mention it - I am aware of the compatible device page on the Xfinity site but am limited in my knowledge of routers/modems.

    Appreciate any information, recommendations, etc.

    Very basic question

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 07:58 PM PDT

Hi, I'm very inexperienced with this type of stuff but I am looking to upgrade my modem, its model is cgd24g and I want to upgrade to something else because the connection is very bad sometimes, if I get a router, is it only attaching the circle like thing and the power cord and attaching a ethernet cable to my laptop and set it up on the site used to modify network settings, is it like that or are there extra steps? The modem I use only needs a power cord and that circle like cable to work, my ethernet speed on speedtest varys from 30-35 mbps and my upload is 6-7 mbps, what would be some good router/modem recommendations for my scenario?

Looking to interface with this punch down panel

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:08 PM PDT

    Picture of panel

I'm moving into a new place that has 5 Ethernet runs wired into the place. I have this panel that I'm not sure what do it with. I'd normally buy a new punch panel and terminate them with RJ45, but I don't have enough slack in the wall to do that. I'm stuck with this panel. Do I run a jumper between this panel and a new panel that has RJ45? Or is there a module that can clip on to this and provide RJ45?

    Kind regards, devagent42.

    Upgrade from AC68U to mesh.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 07:33 PM PDT

I have an ASUS RT-AC68U. It does pretty well but the latency on the 5GHZ channel was always awful and made 5GHZ virtually unusable.

Anyway, I upgraded from a 600sqft studio apartment to a 3500sqft 3-floor house (Oddly enough, same rent/mortgage payment). So I will need something to better fill that space.

My setup is that my server is in the basement and is connected to its own UPS (So the powerline backhaul wouldn't work, which is a bit of a bummer) But I have custom Wifi LED strips throughout the house. As well as Hue bulbs.

    Needs
    - Gaming. My brother and I play many older games like CnC Generals which is pretty dependent on network consistency and latency.
    - Fast network storage. Data transfers saturate a single 1Gb line while still having extra speed on a second 1Gb line. Doesn't have to be full speed but basically the faster the better.
    - I would prefer tri-band, and would like them to behave as one SSID
    - 3 pieces total would be preferred. As well as ethernet on satellites
    - I would like to do ethernet backhaul in the future.

Here are some products I was looking at:
    - TP-Link Deco M5: Good price. Might be dated.
    - Netgear Orbi RBK23: Hear good things about it. (Do I gain the 3rd wifi band if I do ethernet backhaul?)
    - Samsung Smartthings Wifi (Would be nice to add z-wave and potentially extend hue, but apparently needs internet to control local devices which is dumb)
    - Going ahead and running wires and using Ubiquiti access points and keeping the AC68U as a router.

    Any tips/suggestions?

Have xfinity gigabit + their modem + Linksys WRM3200(Bestbuy reccomendation). Good choice?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 07:29 PM PDT

I originally went in for a MoCa adapter but after talking to them about my setup(live with parents, modem is upstairs and my PC is downstairs). He mentioned Nighthawk but said for the price point the Linksys was better. I'm getting lower speeds than desired though(~150mbps). Have a Cat7 cable coming from amazon though I wouldn't mind spending more if there's a better option.

Also, as for why I just want to get as fast as possible downstairs. I know it's not something I may need in regards to speed but it's certainly a want.

Trying to identify a hidden SSID that seems to be in my house.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 03:37 PM PDT

For the last month, I've been trying to locate a wifi network that seems to be approximate to or in my house. I saw this wifi network when I installed wifi analyzer on my phone. I know wifi analyzer is only giving a rough estimate of distance to the network device; however, most other access points are much further away: 50m. This device is usually only between 0-7 meters away from where i'm sitting. The following is its MAC address which I've looked up via the first 6 hexadecimals to determine manufacturer only to find no listings:

    DA:31:34:5B:98:98

Wifi analyzer is decent but its polling interval doesn't happen often enough to hot or cold the direction. So, I guess im wondering what it could be? Is there an app that would allow me pinpoint it better? Hardware device?

I have centurylink fiber. At first I thought it was their Zyxel router. I replaced it with an edgerouter 4 and decommissioned the Zyxel. Yet, the hidden SSID remains. We rent. Im concerned it could be something the landlord or past tenants left and want to rule that out.

Best option for strong signal to distant devices

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 07:01 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is a crazy/stupid idea, but I am trying to figure out an option that I can put in place in the short term.

Problem: My house is older and doesn't currently have options for wired internet connections across the 2 stories/2000sqft + garage and yards. The cable internet connection comes into the house at the furthest corner of the house near the street.

Long term plan: Run wired connections throughout the whole house and garage.

At the areas furthest from my wireless router, primarily my office, our living room, and the garage/workshop (all with multiple internet connected devices) have weak/intermittent signal on particular devices. Certain devices have large, high powered antennas and have no issue with the wireless connection. The majority of the devices have small, old, internal, low powered antennas and are poorly connected.

Is it possible to have a strong antenna (or device that receives signal via antenna) in each of these problem areas to provide a signal to a switch so all of my devices can be connected by wired connections? In my mind, this would be a total of 3 wireless connections to worry about with 8 or so devices (using 1 or 2 at a time) with wired connections to each of those. It seems like this would be a perfect area for wireless range extenders, but they all seem to have limited bandwidth and require grounded homes.

The plan would be to make these three runs in future to make all of these connections wired.

I am open to any suggestions or recommendations that any of you may have. Thank you in advance.

    Extremely unreliable internet connection

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 03:11 PM PDT

I'm just curious to know what my ISP is doing.

My internet has be down for 4/6 hours a day for the past month and a half.

The signals were so terrible between the modem and head end it was basically impossible for my modem to reconnect once it went out.

It took forever to get someone out to fix this issue, first my side, then their side, and just 2 weeks ago my side was fixed, and now I'm experiencing the same issue. Could someone please explain to me what happens between a modem and head end, and why this may have happened?

Is there potential wiring issues? My service is fine when it is online, doesnt glitch out, which leads me to believe I dont have any wiring issues.

I just have been having the most extreme problems with downtime with this company and it is quite infuriating as they offer the highest speed in the area (200mb/s compared to the next highest of 8mb/s), and probably have the worst service.

    Accessing Public Address Locally

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 02:53 PM PDT

Hi all. I have a UniFi SG Pro, but it was acting a bit wonky so I dusted off the Sagemcom router that Spectrum provides me to try it out as a viable backup. I was able to get it set up and ports forwarded as expected, however I could not access the services locally.

On the UniFi, and on multiple Linksys routers before it, I was able to visit http://[my_public_ip]:[port] from a local machine just as well as from an external network. However, on the Sagemcom, it only works from an external network. It seems like a routing issue of some sort, but I can't find any settings to try to tweak.

The back of the unit says:

    RAC2V1S

    SAGEMCOM

    FAST 5280

What in the world am I looking at any why isn't the Ethernet Port in my wall working?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 06:38 PM PDT

Despite the newbie title, I promise I am not completely clueless so I can benefit from any advice. I digress, but here are 3 pictures of my network box thing (Never seen one? Maybe because I used to live in an older home?) Basically it is a dead port. Despite all the blue ethernet cords being connected and the buses being active, it is basically a dead port. Also worth noting our modem is in another room hooked up in an office space via Coax. For some reason there are only phone jacks in that room. Maybe it has to do with the modem not being hooked into ethernet? Thanks in advanced. If anyone could take a look at these pictures and point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

PS4 Pro’s internet speeds (Ethernet+WiFi) have nosedived off a cliff.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 06:35 PM PDT

I have 1 GBPs Fiber Internet. It's lightning fast when I plug my Ethernet cable into my desktop or laptop, clocking in at 400-600 Mbps upload and download speeds.

My PS4 Pro used to be the same, but out of the blue it now tops in at 20 Mbps down and 60 Mbps when plugged in via Ethernet, and 170 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up when on WiFi.

I have tested the Ethernet cable on multiple devices (Mac laptop, PC desktop) and get great speeds. It's definitely the PS4.

I'm on the latest OS and have reset network settings to factory defaults and have had no luck.

    Any ideas?

Sometimes No Internet Until After pfSense Reboot

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 06:33 PM PDT

I've been plagued by an issue the last few weeks that I cannot figure out. Occasionally, on reconnecting to the network, devices can't connect to the internet, but can connect to other internal devices, and the only reliable fix I've found is rebooting the router.

    My network looks like this:

    Modem -> pfSense x.x.x.1 -> switch -> wired and wireless devices x.x.x.2-255

The pfSense box is it's own dedicated hardware (old i5, 4GB RAM, consumer motherboard, dual gigabit Intel NIC). I have a desktop and a wireless AP hardwired to the switch.

When I get home from work, often my phone will connect to the wifi, but not have access to the internet. Toggling the wifi tends to fix the issue with the phone. When I boot up my desktop, it gets an IP address (x.x.x.19), can ping x.x.x.1, and can access the web interfaces for other local devices (for instance, my UNRAID server at x.x.x.102), but cannot access the PFSENSE web interface (x.x.x.1), ping an outside address (like 8.8.8.8) or do a DNS lookup. While the desktop is turned on but "offline", I've pulled up the pfsense web interface on my phone and confirmed that the DHCP lease for the desktop was active and online.

I am new to pfsense, so I might just be looking in the wrong place, but I am not seeing any logs of the firewall blocking any particular device. I don't think it's a hardware issue because I after I reboot pfsense, I get full speed up/down from my desktop out to any of the speedtest sites.

I'm really just perplexed and not sure how to further troubleshoot, any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if I can provide any other helpful information. Thanks!

Question about extending my WiFi in basement for better ps4 gameplay

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 09:49 AM PDT

Hey there! Have a few questions, so my ps4 set up in the basement is pretty close by my router. However the WiFi sucks and I simply wanted to purchase a WiFi booster so I don't lag badly during gameplay. I found one on amazon, and from the reviews it seems to be a good product. My question here is how do I set it up? Should I just plug it in to a wall outlet next to my PS4 and connect an Ethernet cable? Any advice, ideas will help thanks again!

Having trouble with xfinity gigabit and Linksys 3200wrm. What else to try?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 02:37 PM PDT

    Service is Xfinity.

Have their advanced modem and bought the Linksys today. Have a at least Cat6 and purchased a Cat7 from amazon just in case.

Spent hours troubleshooting with multiple service ITs and resetting modem + router(Xifnity and Linksys). Why can't I get above 600mphs? Hooked directly to Gateway I can't get more than 500. Best so far on WiFi is 300.
