    I'm a software developer.

Honestly, I only really need 16 gigs of ram, and an i7 processor. To run my various coding ide.

However..... boss said I have a budget of around 2k for a laptop. I think I can push it to like 2,400$.

Sooooo. I wanna go balls to the walls.

I want a nice screen, a bitchin graphics card, crazy strong CPU, Ram up da A$$.

15 or 17 inch displays. This thing will be sitting on my office desk most of the time anyway. So I wont carry it around too often.

I want it all. It doesnt have to be light, but the lighter the better. I want this thing to pull at least a 120hz screen. And I want it to be pretty AF. At this price point this thing better be able to run my oculus rift easily.

Give me a few options, guys. Like 2 or 3 at just under 2k and a few just above 2k.

I have looked into sagers, and they seem interesting, I just dont really know what km looking for and what specs are worth paying more.

Getting a laptop for uni, very low budget, would like to be able to play League on it, any suggestions?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 03:54 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to £250 from the UK.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for money, also wouldn't be against a 2 in 1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Chrome OS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only really planning to game on it. Preferably Overwatch and League Of Legends, but I'm aware I probably won't be able to play overwatch on anything this low spec.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch and League of Legends, and I honestly don't care about settings, I'm just gonna turn them all the way down anyway.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Has a camera and a good microphone built in, but again for this price range I'm aware its not realistic to expect it.

Want a reasonably thin laptop for gaming, maybe some game dev. Please link! [$2000+ budget, United States]

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:55 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000+, United States. Honestly willing to pay whatever makes me feel truly satisfied that I got a good deal, good return on investment.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not 2 in 1. Battery life is a plus but I'm used to plugging in because my current battery is garbage. Best specifications for the money sounds good.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would really like to try a thinner/lighter laptop within reason.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Either 15 or 17

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. ALL the video games! And probably some development programs: Maya, UE4, Unreal, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? ALL OF THEM! BEST FPS! FOREVER!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I have a pair of Sennheiser 558s so I guess a decent audio card would be nice. Not a necessity though.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I saw the Razerblade discussed here a lot, but there are so many different specifications I didn't know where to lean. I'm a n00b when it comes to Hz, differences between graphics cards, processors, etc. Also, I'm a little worried about overheating, as I might have the laptop on my bed, in my lap, or on the carpeted floor at some point.

Please link specific recommendations! (I also need help knowing where to buy from and what is a good deal.)

    Thank you so much!!!!!

Going to London, thought it'd be a great opportunity to buy a new laptop

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 03:53 AM PDT

The one I have now is super slow.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Since Im considering buying a Dell XPS since it's an easy choice, is say around 1000 pounds

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery would be great. I'm mostly looking for a laptop that could actually handle my use without constantly overheating and being overall super slow.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like to take it to school with me, but a laptop being quite heavy is not a dealbreaker

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I don't really care as long as it's fast

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Since I'm gonna use it for movies, I'd say around 15 inch, but I don't know if it'll fit in my bag

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming, like Minecraft, old games like heroes 3, age of empires, binding of Isaac. Doing some basic editing and Photoshop work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly old games. I got a PS4 which I use to play major releases such as FIFA and doom. The heaviest games I'm planning to play are maybe Bioshock, portal, g mod

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A touchscreen would be nice, don't care about the rest. Mostly just want speed.

Laptop for playing the Sims 4, Windows, $600 or less

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:10 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I'm currently the owner of a gaming desktop (that was budget back in 2013...) and a 2009 Macbook Pro. I used to play The Sims 4 on my work-provided computers, but I've started a new job that's a bit less lax about what happens on their machines outside of work hours. I've since figured out that I hate playing games on my desktop due to my current set up, and my Macbook Pro crawls when I try the Sims at the lowest graphic settings.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

    $600, USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

    Good specs for the money

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

    Not at all

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

Sims 4 mainly, assorted steam games otherwise

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

    Sims 4, preferably high graphics.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

    n/a

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I'd be happy with a used computer that might need a part or two replaced for a lower price. I'm an IT professional so I can take care of that easily as long as soldering isn't involved.

Looking for a New Gaming Laptop (budget €1700)

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 02:52 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I've been looking around and struggling to find a laptop that fits what I'm hoping to find. I've looked at the newest HP Omen, Acer Predator, and ASUS ROG Strix models as well as a few customs on PCSpecialist and honestly I'm hopelessly lost, so I was hoping you lovely citizens of Reddit would help me out in deciphering which is the best machine.

Please bear in mind that my budget could maybe be stretched a little further if something perfect comes up. It also needs to be deliverable to Spain.

The things I can't budge on:

    17.3" screen

    1TB hard drive

    Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics card

Decent cooling - IE not needing to have spacecraft-taking-off-mode fans on 24/7 like my current one does

    Windows 10 OS

Things I'd like to have on it if I can get them:

    Integrated webcam/mic

    512+GB SSD

    144Hz screen

    RGB backlit keyboard

I'll be mainly using it to run WoW Classic, which I'm hoping to have at Graphics 10, but I also play Overwatch, Skyrim, Witcher, Assassin's Creed, Dragon Age, ESO, and any number of random Steam games. Could any of you wonderful people please make any suggestions for me? :)

    Huawei or older hp spectre

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 02:48 AM PDT

I'm trying to chose between the "maxed" huawei matebook 13(1344 usd) , the huawei matebook x pro 2018 (2171 usd or 1773 usd if bought from German amazon) and a HP Spectre x360 13-ae005no(1500 usd)

I'm in Sweden so there is always extra cost involved in buying electronics.

I will manly use if for studying and music production but there will probably be some light 4k editing while I'm away from home.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

      2000 usd Sweden

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      Form factor and battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. None and all might just do a clover triple boot

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Around 13 inches because I'm gonna be bringing it with me all the time

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Adobe premier PS AI and ID some very light blender work and maybe a lol game or something like that once or twice and FL studio

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? LOL maybe wow classic to be playable

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is a must and build quality is important because I'll be using it a lot and will probably get annoyed if it feels cheap

I'd prefer touch but it's not a must

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Increase storage space/SSD on new gaming laptop..?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 10:57 PM PDT

    Hi All,

Hoping you can help with something I probably made a stupid and hasty decision with.. I have been recently looking to buy a gaming laptop. I saw a deal for one on prime day that my brother said was a good deal. A few hours later I decided I was going to go for it. Unfortunately that laptop I was looking at became sold out within the few hours of making the decision. I went with what I thought was the next best deal with the below purchase as I saw the graphics card was just as good perhaps a bit better

I bought the "Asus ROG Strix G Gaming Laptop, 15.6" 120Hz IPS Type Full HD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, Intel Core i7-9750H, 16GB DDR4, 512GB PCle Nvme SSD, RGB KB, Windows 10, GL531GV-PB74

Issue is the 512GB is definitely way too small (was trying to download Skyrim today and needed an extra 100 GB, game is like 380GB total). What are my options for expanding this? Does it need to be an internal replacement or can I plug something in and it will work at an extended storage device? Very new to the PC gaming world and any advice would be awesome. Thank you!!

    Posted: 16 Aug 2019 02:36 AM PDT

I do both frontend and backend work, with occasional use of Unity for game development. My question is that is the base version of MacBook pro with 1.4 GHz turbo boost 3.9 quad core, i5, 128gb storage, 8gb ram sufficient or should i go with 2.4ghz processor having turbo boost 4.1. Or should I consider another laptop for the same range. Use macmini at work therefore a little eager to continue with macos. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    Best keyboards for gaming laptops?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 11:30 PM PDT

In addition to gaming, I'll be doing content creation. I'll be writing and programming, and am right now looking at the Y540, Y740, and Triton 500. I'm looking to spend around $1300-1500, I had tried a Y540 in a store, and found the keys slightly large in a way that didn't feel as comfortable as to what I'm used to. Is that something you can adjust to? My local store doesn't have the Y740 to try out, so not sure if there is a difference between y540 and y740 in key sizes? I'm looking at the y740 a bit closer after noticing it is on sale now.

Curious any thoughts from anyone on gaming laptop keyboards in this price range in general.

    Compact, secondary 2-in-1 for Linux

Don't care if it's thick, but weight is super important, it shouldn't be a total joke to actually use the 2-in-1 ability compared to like an Android tablet.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Linux. I'm not comfortable buying anything that doesn't have reviews confirming nothing seriously broken.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

10-13". IPS, half-decent colors, and laminated touchscreen are important (the last laptop had neither and I'm definitely not repeating that mistake). 1366x768 is acceptable if it's small and cheap enough, but the more DPI, the better.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Nothing demanding, mainly web browsing/document viewing/lightweight programming/web dev/remote admin. Celeron or Atom is likely perfectly acceptable. Only hard requirement is 4GB RAM.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    No gaming.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good quality (though I don't care about "premium" material), keyboard should be decent, trackpad doesn't matter as much.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Another option could be a convertible with a high-end processor that eliminates the need for a desktop, but I'm afraid if it would be a bad compromise (very bulky and not that powerful).

    College laptop.

I live in Canada. Need a laptop for college. I will be using it for general regular use and homework and stuff. Might be video editing and using Photoshop and stuff for fun but that's not too important.

    Budget is $1400 CAD.

Has to have atleast 15 inch screen.

    I7-8550U or better processor.

    GTX 1050 or better GPU

    Atleast 256 SSD

    Decent amount of RAM

4k screen is a plus but that's not a priority. I'll settle for a FHD.

Battery doesn't matter since I'll have it in charge often. Just as long as it doesn't die in less then 4 hours of use.

Looking for gaming laptop woth good performance, cooling and quiet

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 07:00 PM PDT

Hi, just a word before the post, the more recent the laptop is the better, this is not an important factor but i'd just prefer if my new laptop didn't go out of date in 2-3 years time. It's also very crucial to me that the laptop has quite cooling (under 60dbs). Thanks for helping!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $6000 at most in Canada.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Please, not a 2 in 1. I'd prefer if the laptop could survive at least 3 hours under full load, with an RTX2070 (non-max q) and 9750H minimum. I'd also like the screen to be 144hz. At least 16gb of ram. 1tb SSD (preferred or a large hard drive with 512gb SSD).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not exactly, as long as it's not as thick as an EVGA graphics card, it's ok.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly gaming and light school work.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd like to play shooters like Rainbow Six Siege at at least 144fps as that's the refresh rate I'm looking for as well.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm not very picky with keyboards. As long as the computer isn't gonna fall apart and has not a lot of flex on the keyboard it's good. No touch screen. Fingerprint reader isn't important. No optical drive. Input doesn't matter as long as there's at least 1 thunderbolt 3.
