    Weekly "anything goes" thread!

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 05:41 AM PDT

Here's your chance to talk about whatever!

Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread.

Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed.

    Storing user's game data?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:27 PM PDT

Hi all, apologies if this is too broad a question.

I am making an app where the user takes a 20 question quiz. By the nature of the quiz the user is expected to take it many times in order to improve their time and correctness. I am recording:

Number answered correctly; Average time taken to answer; Average margin of error (closeness to correct answer).

Right now I am using a SQLite table to record this data. But I'm curious if this is overkill for the simplistic nature of the data. Would it make more sense to have a Java/kotlin data structure (3 arraylists, etc.) to hold this data? And if this is the case, my next question is: where would I store the data? I understand that you shouldnt store persistent data in activities or the app file. I'm not sure where would be appropriate.

I've read the data and file storage overview. Just want to make sure this type of data isn't so simple that I could just store it somewhere in a kotlin file or class.

    Thanks for any advice!

How is this allowed? (Little bit of a rant)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:28 PM PDT

Ok so I am only a beginner when it comes app dev, a class or 2 but nothing past beginner, but I have been using Android since my Galaxy S 3, back when that was still good. I don't know about anyone else but this annoys me to no end. Is it just me or anyone else too?

Why is it allowed that app developers can just not say what they changed in an update of that size(the Facebook update)? What's second most annoying is when they just don't change the change log but that's at least better, in my opinion. What does everyone else think about this? I'm guessing there's no rule, probably, on the Google Play when you post an update but shouldn't there be?

Has anyone has a similar error? My recently published app won't download on any device/account.

How many of you follow Test Driven Development for your apps?

If not, what do you do to design your code to be unit testable?

Changing the gradual rollout as well requires a review

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:40 PM PDT

I have recently notification that when I change the rollout percentage of the app, it takes up to 6-12 hours to take an affect.

Has anyone noticed something similar as well?

How to create a calendar that can show upcoming events?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 10:05 AM PDT

I am creating an app that has an event list and an account system and I want to create the ability for users to add events to their 'personal event calendar'. I was wonder what plug in or API is best to accomplish this? I was initially going to try and work with calendar view but I have found it is more suited to input rather than output.

Ideally I'd want to highlight events as squares over certain dates after they have been added from the events list. I will likely have an arraylist of dates per user and an array list of event names, with possibly a final arraylist that denotes the type of event for a consistant color scheme (something like a blue square in the calendar representing a reoccuring event while red is a one off).

Any help or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated thanks :)

Use of Google Material Design icons

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:10 PM PDT

This might be a stupid question, but with all the small developer bans I feel like I should ask it anyway...

Can you use Google's Material Design icons (https://material.io/resources/icons/?style=baseline) as your app's main icon and not get banned for app impersonation or some other violation?
