I restarted my husband's PC and now it won't turn on, help!

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:29 AM PDT

Today is a rare day where my hubs is at work, but I have the day off. This means I can get 8 sweet, uninterrupted hours of rimworld and civ, yessss.

The speakers were being read by the pc, but no sound was coming out of them, so I restarted it. It frequently happens that little things like the speakers or mouse don't work right, and a quick restart fixes the issue. Well, not today. When it tried to boot back up, it just won't. The ram, the fans, the motherboard and stuff all light up inside, but nothing is coming up on the monitor. I called hubs and he told me to do the unplug from power and hold down the button thing, it didn't help. Hit the delete button a bunch to boot it in bios, but nothing. Sometimes all the rgb will stay in default, sometimes the ram will go to the custom settings. The speakers are making little rhythmic thud noises, hubs said that's it trying to start up and cycling through different things. He had to get off the phone, so now I'm on my own.

I know a little bit about pc's, like which parts are where, but I don't know exactly which models of the parts he has. I'm not quite brave enough to crack the case open and unplug stuff... but do you guys have any simple troubleshooting ideas for me? I would love to be able to get my game on today. Thank you, lovely pc people.

Edit: Solved! Unplugging the speaker's aux from the monitor and unplugging the monitor's display cord and plugging it back in fixed it. The aux cord was stopping the monitor from reading the pc correctly for some reason. Weird!

Custom 3D Printed GPU Shroud for two 120mm Noctua Fans

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 06:19 AM PDT

After finally getting my Ender 3 to print well i decided to replace the terribly loud and grindy Gigabyte Cooler on my GTX1070 with this : https://i.redd.it/60su1jex7vi31.jpg

Im using Argus monitor to link the Fanspeed to my GPU temp and using a very not agressive curve i can keep it at 0-300RPM during idle and 600RPM at load. (70c max, light OC)

Thus i finally managed to make my PC pretty much inaudible during rendering or gaming (No HDD and quiet PSU) coupled with a 1,3 KG Passive Cooler on my 8700k i found on Ebay.

STL file for the Shroud (Printed at 103%) STL file : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zJLOPNBuEu4j9LH2xG_nYaRiPMOb160p/view?usp=sharing

I hope someone here found that interesting :)

    Building a pc for FFXIV

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 11:44 AM PDT

I have saved two builds from here in the past, but can't for the life of me find where, so I've been basing my ideas off of what I have. The current build I'm looking at getting is as follows:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor $128.80 @ Amazon

Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total (before mail-in rebates) $697.76

    Total $667.76
*Lowest price parts chosen from parametric criteria
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-08-30 14:39 EDT-0400

    My main questions are:

Is the case going to work out? I like the look of it but I'm open to changing it in order for all the parts to work

Storage options: should I got for a TB hard drive or stick with what's here? I like having more space just in case.

    Budget is between 600-700 usd

144hz gaming at 1080p ultra settings

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 07:22 AM PDT

I'm making a pc build with a Ryzen 5 3600 and I'm trying to find a graphics card to pair with it without over paying for performance.

My budget is around 400 so I was thinking about the 2060 super but I'm not sure that I'll even worry with the ray tracing feature.

I mostly play first person shooters so my main focus is raw FPS. Can anyone advise me if there is another card with the same performance for new games? Like I say I'm not hung up on ray tracing, I just want FPS and for the card to be newer so it'll last longer.

Edit: another question I have is: would it be better to get an 2700 or a 3600? They are around the same price so I'm wondering if the 2700 would produce a better frame rate.

    I think I shorted something

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 04:22 PM PDT

I was building my new pc today and I got everything put together, plugged it in and the mouse and keyboard weren't working. I turned it off and realized I didn't have the usb from the power supply plugged in (I think, what I think was the usb plug wasn't labeled on my power supply). I press the power button to turn it back on and there was a spark and now it won't turn on.

Here's what I plugged into F_USB1 before it shorted.

I have lost my m.2 screw and currently, don't have a replacement.
So, where do I buy this screw?

I found these screws on Amazon, but I don't know if those will actually fit. There's also this kit but that's way too costly for me.

    5700 xt vs 2070 super

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 04:09 PM PDT

    Hey all,

New PC builder here with a couple questions.

Recently, I got my hands on the new LG 1ms IPS display monitor somehow, so I have the choice between AMD and Nvidia now because of the FreeSync and G-Sync compatibility. I REALLY want to save some money and get an aftermarket 5700 xt but ive heard so much about Navi driver issues thats pushing me towards 2070 super. Can anyone tell me more about this and give me some advice? Also if I go with 2070 super, will I experience tearing in higher fps games since the lg monitor isnt EXACTLY a gsync monitor or does it make a difference?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 11:21 AM PDT

I was plugging the cables in the mobo (ASRock x570 phantom gaming 4) and i noticed that there were only 3 fan connectors (I have six CM fans: 3 of them are Masterfan MF 120R A rgb and the other 3 came whith the case: CM k500l) on it. Is there some kind of adapter or something in which I can plug the fans and their rgb cables?

i5 2500k running idle at 60C, which is an improvement after cleaning out the pc and redoing thermal paste. how do i get it lower (stock cooler)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:56 PM PDT

is something wrong with these temps? when streaming plex to my tv it shoots up to 90C+ and when gaming it goes to 80-90C on modest settings (fortnite).

i noticed case fans arent on. gigabyte z68x ud3h from 2011. they used to spin, then one day they stopped. why?

    shouldnt temps be lower?

would getting a nonstock cooler improve this significantly? if so, which? for budget purposes

    Which monitor? Please help.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 11:47 AM PDT

I have a 4k 60hz 1ms monitor. £399.99 bought 4 years ago. I now play the following. Rocket League CS:GO (I play others casually these are my competitive games) I like to think of myself as a good gamer. I want to be better. I have bought a very good keyboard and mouse for CS:GO. A good controller for RL.

I have a 4k 60hz monitor. My PC will run 4k 60fps. No problem. When I put on 1080p max settings 150+ FPS

But I'm being bottlenecked by my 60hz. The issue is I dont want to spend £400 plus on a 4k 144hz.

So my questions are. Will I notice the difference? Will I regret going for a 1080p 144hz? Will I be upset with picture quality when I play GTA or Forza for example? Or will the 144hz make it look a lot smoother?

    I'm considering these two..

    https://www.ebuyer.com/838555-eg-27-gaming-monitor-qhd-144hz-1ms-with-amd-freesync-gs27-v2

To summarise... Do I got cheaper brand at 2k? Or msi 1080p and curved which I would like..

Or just keep the one I've got?

    Thanks in advance

Fractal Define R6 - max size for top-mounted 280mm AIO?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:31 PM PDT

In the Fractal Define R6 manual, it specifies that for top-mounting a 280mm AIO it has to be 36mm max.
    (here)
I can't figure out if this is referring to radiator depth, or radiator+fan.
    Can someone clarify?

I'm also unsure whether to go for NZXT Kraken X62 or Corsair H115i RGB Platinum.

    SSD life spans

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 10:40 AM PDT

I've heard many different answers on this topic and I want to get the building community's opinion.

Basically, I've heard about MLC, TLC, and QLC, and how QLC dies the fastest. I've heard some people say SSD's last roughly ~6 years, and I've also been shown tests that show SSD's need so much information written to them to fail they will last a lifetime.

As for my personal experience, after 6 years the SSD in my MacBook is still at 100% health in CrystalDiskInfo. However, I bought a used Crucial MX300 MLC for my PC build. To my surprise, this SSD was at 96% health. An MLC? Aren't these supposed to be more reliable? And my boot drive is a TLC Mushkin Pilot...

While that's gotten me thinking about a more serious backup plan, I wonder how much longer it will last period, considering how well the Samsung SSD is doing in the MacBook? Maybe I don't need to worry about it so much?

So, I ask the members of the PC master race: what is your experience with the reliability of SSD's? What should I look for that would indicate it's starting to fail?

    CPU Upgrade?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:01 PM PDT

So I recently upgraded my GPU from a 970 to an RTX2070 and while the card has been great, I'm noticing that basically everything I play is maxing out my CPU, to the point where discord and other apps suffer while I play a game (discord is always Robo).

    Here are my specs:

    Motherboard: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012AQGL4A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    CPU: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012M8M7TY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    GPU: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07J63W42X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    I've also got 16gb RAM.

It seems like it's an obvious CPU bottleneck, but what I"m curious is if there is a good option for a CPU upgrade without replacing the motherboard as well?

    Thanks!

    New GPU or Build?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 04:09 PM PDT

Hello, Trying to determine if I merely need to upgrade my GPU or if I need to get going on a new build. Looking to use for light 1440p 60hz gaming (Sudden Strike, War Thunder and Plex Server).

Will my frame rate get a significant boost if I move to the GTX 1070 with current build using old I5 3570 or would the same 1070 only significantly benefit from the upgraded Ryzen 5 2600 Build? Here is my current rig, followed by what I am looking at building.

Would you make any changes to this 1440p 60+Hz gaming build?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I posted here a few weeks ago inquiring about improving a very rudimentary build I was considering, but since then I've researched parts for a while and wanted to see if my current idea is a good one, or if there is anything that could use improvements. This build will be 1440p 60+Hz gaming.

Things I feel confident about: CPU (I am aware it may be overkill), GPU Things I feel unsure about: RAM, SSD (Maybe an Intel 660p would be more cost effective?)

    Thanks for your help!
