I want to switch from Windows 10 to Linux and am wondering how transferring my files works? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:47 AM PDT Sorry for being this unintelligent but I have no clue how files work on Linux. I want to use the Ubuntu distro. Do I just put my files on a USB and then plug it in when the new OS is installed? Any help would be greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |

Oooooooold laptop wanting to put a Linux distro on it. Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:26 PM PDT I found my laptop that was last used in 2008 in the storage unit and would like to put Linux on it. Which distro would be best for a Dell XPS m140? It appears to have a Pentium m 1.7ghz processor and 512 mb of ddr2 sdram. If there is more info I could add to help please let me know. Can someone suggest me linux distro that uses minimum amounts of ram? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 10:19 PM PDT I'm looking for linux distro that uses less than or equal to 512MB of ram. All I want from that distro is to open a web browser and check out the files stored on the different OS by going on it IP port. Edit: Thanks for the overwhelming response to this newbies question. You all really helped me out. [link] [comments] |
Are server machines configured to auto login on boot? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 10:46 AM PDT I know this isn't a linux question per se. I was wondering how to setup a home media server, and it struck me that you'll have to login after boot to get any kind of functionality. Since, most servers run headless, I assume that you set up a server that auto logins into your account on boot. I guess even running cron tasks requires you to be logged in. Am I right? If yes, does this apply to enterprise grade servers as well? [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to make a portable full Linux installation on an SSD? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 03:54 AM PDT I was wondering if I could install elementary OS on an external SSD in such a way that I am able to save data each time my session ends. Essentially, it would be a portable Linux stick. For example, I wanted to be able to boot into it with my work PC, take the stick out, then plug it into my home PC with all my data saved. Is this feasible? If so, any links on how to do this would be appreciated :) If it is possible, then what are the glaring cons and how much storage should the portable SSD have? [link] [comments] |

Plymouth and Nvidia Drivers Fedora 30 Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:49 PM PDT I have installed the Nvida CUDA drivers via the negativo17 repro and they work great. However Plymouth is gone during boot up and I only see 3 small squares in the middle of the screen once the GDM login page comes up everything is fine. Does anyone have steps for restoring Plymouth during boot with the Nvidia drivers? I would just like to have a clean boot up process if possible. [link] [comments] |
What is the a simple way to setup Local file sharing at home in Ubuntu? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:56 AM PDT Scrambled through the internet and found out that Samba is the man. I can't install samba because it throws error like: https://i.redd.it/p09pl2noeti31.png How do I successfully set it up, not necessarily with a password initially? Appreciate you help! Edit: Its my bad for not clearly stating the matter. What I want to achieve is a shared folder on my ubuntu which anyone can access, windows or linux, and download or view its contents through the router. So theoretically, my PC working as a server of that shared folder. [link] [comments] |
