New laptop with Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS, Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting. Could this be the hardware?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 11:02 AM PDT

So I am testing my new laptop and for the most part it's working fine with occasional hiccups that I have been able to fix as they were Ubuntu related. I'm traveling and at a friend's place which have complained that their wi-fi slows down sometimes. So I have been facing issues where the wi-fi drops out, and it still says it's connected to the network but has a question mark. I can get it to work if I disconnect and connect again.

So far I kind of assumed it was their internet, but their connection never drops out even if it does get slow. I just want to make sure this is not a hardware issue before the time to return the laptop is done. Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this?

    Is Whonix really legit?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:54 AM PDT

Hope no one's offended, but their info says it's put together by "non-professionals" in their "spare time" and that there are times that it "fails" to keep you anonymous. That doesn't exactly make me confident about using it for anonymity, especially since I need to stay anonymous for safety reasons. I've been through a long saga of which linux distro to choose (tried TAILS, Qubes, Mint) and have finally settled on Ubuntu, which I will tweak as much as possible for security. To that end, I wanted to create a Whonix VM with VirtualBox, but am now having doubts about Whonix and am thinking about going with an Ubuntu VM within an Ubuntu system, just to safeguard the hardware of my computer from prying eyes. I was going to create several VM's for different online stuff. Any recommendations about what OS I should use for the VM?

Weird permissions behavior with a USB drive

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:52 PM PDT

I'm using parrot OS installed on an external hard drive. Prior to about two days ago, everything worked perfectly. My USB was recognized, and I could read and write to it.

Now, when I plug it in, it's in read only mode. I did mount -o rw /dev/sdc1 /media/usb, and it said it was fine.

None of the folders had the lock symbol on them. I could also make a folder in the topmost directory (/media/usb). But if I left or right click on any subdirectory, it displays the lock symbol and declares it read only.

It's a single 32gb FAT32 partition on the USB drive

How do use a long complex name listed by the ls command in my desired command?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:22 AM PDT

Say I listed files and directories in one of the directories using ls command and the file or directory I wanna use in my actual command eg cp has name that is long and complex gibberish. How do I "copy" this required filename so I dont have to type it all the time and inevitably mistype something?

    Hi,

Is there a way to compare 2 very long strings of alpha numerics to certify that they are the same identical string so that I could tell right away if they are different. Kinda like when using '| grep' to compare a sha hash to hashed file file??

/home/* files deleted out of nowhere

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:37 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

asking here since I'm really desperate...

this morning I turned on my PC, tried to log on usual user account, first strange thing when I enter username and password, it logs in for half a second and then it brings me directly back to the session manager screen. Looks weird, so I login as root.

Doing my life on the computer, checking mails... then I do a HDD benchmark with gnome-disks. I have 240G SSD for the OS, and a 2T HDD with a single ext4 partition for /home. And 10 minutes later, I want to check a file on my normal usual user account (/home/cat/Documents/whatever), and nothing is here. /home is empty, 0 directory. Out of nowhere... Even if my HDD benchmark was huge (1G x 200 read/write), I had still a lot of free space (350G used out of 1900G) on my HDD, so I don't think it overwrote my stuff.

Of course I googled my issue, I tried to use testdisk to find my lost data. I follow every step of a tutorial, but at some point the "Undelete" option doesn't appear... So I can't recover anything.

If you have any idea of what is wrong, I would appreciate a lot

    Thanks

EDIT: HDD benchmark needs the filesystem to be unmounted. Simply forgot to mount it back on /home after.

How to add Debian 10 to grub2?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 11:34 AM PDT

I dual boot ubuntu 18.04 with win 10 and the grub is managed by ubuntu which gives me options if I want to load into ubuntu or windows. I now was installing Debian 10 on a different partition and when the installation wasn't able to install Grub, I skipped that part and finished the installation. How do I now configure or create a grub that will let me choose win 10, ubuntu and Debian during startup?

Would I have any issues having dual monitors with different resolutions? (1440 + 1080, Ubuntu)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 10:00 AM PDT

Pretty much title. I have a 1440/144hz monitor for gaming and have been wanting to add a productivity/coding monitor but would prefer to not splurge on 1440.

Currently running off a GTX 970, I'm worried if there would be weird Nvidia issues that would crop up.

    Thanks!

Installing WiFi Driver manually using Apt and subsequent updates/upgrades

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 06:13 AM PDT

A package exists for my usb wifi card, and I can install it using apt. I don't have internet access on my computer, but I do have another computer that does have access. If I manually download and transfer the package to my target computer, then use apt to install the package manually, say by using:

    sudo apt-get install ./<wifi_driver>.deb

will this package then update properly once I've got wifi access running?

Ie. will I run into issues running update/upgrade?

Installed elementary OS on second SSD but the drive name is duplicated in the BIOS

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:34 AM PDT

Hi guys, I'm honestly at a loss here. So I have two SSDs for two different OS:

    1) Windows 10 on a Samsung SSD 970 EVO 2 TB

    2) elementary OS on a Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1 TB

I had just installed elementary OS on the second SSD, but when I went into the BIOS it shows the same SSD name for both boot options. Clearly not the case since the OS are on different drives completely.

When I go into Windows disk management, it doesn't even list a name or drive letter for the second drive, even though there was something there before I installed elementary OS to it.

How do I change the name so that it appears correctly in BIOS and hopefully Microsoft as well? Or is this a common error that I should just put up with?

Images for what it looks like in BIOS and disk management in Windows . In disk management the second drive is listed as Disk 2 : https://imgur.com/gallery/iyFWwzD

The option to add a drive name or rename the drive was unavailable in Windows disk management. The only available option was to delete the drive.

Had to boot Mint on a USB drive via UEFI - no advanced startup "Use a device" option?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:04 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I've been interested in Linux for a while but only yesterday took the initiative to try using it. I'm pretty new to all this in general, but I'm excited to learn more! For the sake of easily switching between distros to try, I decided to put my first one, Mint, on a 16GB flashdrive. I did encounter some weird problems, though. For context, I currently run 64-bit Windows 10 and my motherboard is ASRock (sorry, I'd be more specific but I'm posting from work and don't remember the exact model).

To start, I screwed up my first flashdrive. Now, I did just find it lying around my room, so it may have been pretty old and had problems before I even touched it. But after formatting it, using a disk imager client to install the ISO, and doing an advanced startup (Shift-Restart), I noticed that I had no "Use a device" option - only "Continue to Windows," "Troubleshoot," and "Shutdown." I figured this was an issue with my flashdrive and fiddled around with it some more in Windows before giving up and buying a new one at a convenience store.

So, to be absolutely sure, I try a new Mint image and a new disk imager client on this new flashdrive. Still no luck from the advanced startup menu. I opened up my UEFI and made sure "Launch CSM" under "Boot" was enabled (it was) and my "Secure Boot Control" under "Security" was disabled (it was, too). I was completely stumped after troubleshooting with the last flashdrive for hours! I ended up going into my UEFI and digging around to see if I could find any other options, and ended up booting from my USB directly from there. Sure enough, Mint booted and was 100% usable. I shut down, unplugged my flash drive, booted to Windows perfectly fine, and switched the USB to my HP laptop. I ran an advanced startup and "Use a device" showed up!

What in the world is going on? I'd like to eventually dual boot on my desktop, so I'm concerned about my advanced startup menu not functioning properly. Thanks!

    Linux on ThinkPad R60

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:09 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I might get my hands on a slightly outdated ThinkPad R60 that comes with Windows XP but I prefer to replace it with some kind of Linux distribution.

Specs I got from the current owner:

    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 @ 1.83 GHz
    GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
    RAM: 1.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
    HDD: Hitachi 80 GB

I'll possibly max out the RAM to 3 GB in the future (maybe I'll swap the hard drive as well but that's not a priority) but for now I'd like to stick with what I get. Would I be able to run a current version of Lubuntu on this machine? I'd like to use it to do some programming stuff in C and maybe edit some HTML pages.

I've already asked around but everyone was telling me something different. Someone told me that Lubuntu would run fine on this machine, another one told me to go for an older version of Linux. And yet another one told me not to go for an older version because it would be impossible to install software from the package manager. Is that even true?

However, maybe some of you has some knowledge to spare and might tell what would be possible with this computer.

Can somebody explain permissions and groups? I am completely lost.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:52 PM PDT

I've spent the last 12 hours trying to (unsuccessfully) set up a Plex media server in Raspbian. I have never touched linux in my life besides my short time with my C.H.I.P. I am very experienced in windows, so this came as quite the "culture shock". Basically, my problem is that when I tell Plex where to look for my media, it can't see anything. I can see it, VLC can play it, but Plex can't see it. I am storing the media on a removable drive. I am running a brand new installation of Raspbian with nothing on it except for the default programs and Plex installed from their website. I have not done any modifications to permissions or users whatsoever besides changing the computer name and password. Please ELI5 if possible.
