Help me decide on Lenovo Y540 vs Y740

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 08:25 AM PDT

Hey everyone, so I am on the search to buy my first ever gaming laptop/any gaming machine.

After narrowing down my options I have decided that I really like the Lenovo Y series. Please help me decided on this. TLDR; is it worth about $200 more for the upgrade to y740? See below for benefits of the y740 over the y540.

    So here are my options:

    Option A ($1299)

    Lenovo Y540

    • 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7-9750H Six-Core.
    • 16GB DDR4 RAM | 1TB SSD PCIe M.2.
    • 15.6" 1920 x 1080 144 Hz IPS Display, 300 nitts.
    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 GPU (6GB).

note: can also get this deal on Lenovo website for $1249 but only comes with 512GB SSD instead of the 1TB SSD on BHphotovideo, but if I can use student discount or ebates on Lenovo website then Lenovo website might be a better deal?

    Option B ($1469)
($1469 before student discount and/or Ebates)
not sure if I can use student discount on this deal

    Lenovo Y740

    • 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7-9750H Six-Core
    • 16GB DDR4 RAM | 1TB SSD PCIe M.2
    • 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) NVIDIA® G-SYNC, 144 Hz, 500 nits, Dolby Vision HDR400
    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 GPU (6GB)
    • RGB custom keyboard lights

So from my research here are the benefits of the Y740: it is pretty much an upgraded Y540 in every way, but is it worth the $200?

Pros of Y740: - y740 has bigger battery (by alittle bit, like 55 vs 70W or something)
    - y740 has BETTER SCREEN (G-Sync, Dolby Vision HDR for better colors, brighter screen 500 vs 300 nitts)
    - RGB custom keyboard and port lighting (Corsair iCUE software)
    - aluminum chassis, Y540 is all plastic
    - better thermals because of metal
    - slightly thinner body

    • y740 has Killer Wireless WiFi chip, y540 is Intel
    • y740 has Thunderbolt 3 port

    Cons of y740:
    - some say the keyboard is worse than y540 because macro keys are awkward.
    - no number pad on y740, but has on y540

    Need Help

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 03:14 PM PDT

So im not tech savvy at all, but i need a laptop. I just need some suggestions on some laptops that i could possibly buy. I'm a high school student that just needs something that will last. it's gonna be used for simple tasks like schoolwork (office 365) or just simply browsing the web and watching youtube, it's also going to be used to play some games. my budget is about 800 so anything below that would be amazing,

    Thoughts on msi gs65 stealth

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 03:10 PM PDT

I just bought this laptop for roughly $1200 pretax and was wondering how good it is.

I'm sure performance wise the cpu and gpu are plenty for my needs (cad and light gaming) but my main concern is battery life and thermals. I've been reading mixed reviews of people saying the battery lasting as low as 3 hours and as high as 7 hours. As for thermals some say it rarely heats up while others say it's hotter than most laptops.

I'll mainly be using this laptop at home and occasionally at work mostly on a flat surface but I'd like the battery to last at least 5-6 hours of casual use (browsing, cad, business) and don't want it to be heating up or have the fans going crazy. From time to time I'd also like to use it on my lap and don't want my legs to turn into barbecue.

Tldr was this laptop a good purchase or is there something better suited for my needs around the same price (I'd also prefer something light, ideally <4.5 lbs but I wouldn't be tooooo opposed to something <5 lbs)

    Thanks in advance!!

    Laptop for school + Games

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 02:30 PM PDT

Ayt, so I've been looking at laptops for a while, and I need one for school and gaming. Basically I'm looking for a laptop that can run overwatch on medium to high, and that is thin and light. Since I'm doing art for GCSE I think a 2 in 1 laptop with a pen may be useful, but that's just a bonus. Anyone got any recommendations for a budget of about £1000-£1500

MSI PS63 vs Dell XPS 15 7590: Thank God for Return Policies.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:25 PM PDT

For the last couple of weeks I've been researching laptops and finally came down to the two models mentioned, the MSI PS63 and a similarly specd XPS 15 7590.

At a local Microsoft store I was able to spend a fair amount of time demoing both machines and decided that it was the right idea at the time to go with the PS63 as it was less expensive even though I liked the Dell more. I'm very thankful that they have an ironclad return policy as a week of real life working with it turned me way off.

The PS63 has great specs in a sleek package and that cannot be denied. It's a good machine but has several quirks that I couldn't get passed. First was the dim screen. It was okay in the store which was well lit, but taking it outside even the antiglare couldn't save it and I was wanting more. The speakers were so weak that I couldn't hear anything over my A/C unit in my living room too. The biggest thing that I couldn't deal with was the keyboard. It didn't feel so bad in the store, but the large flat keys with and feedback while typing was an incredibly lack luster experience for me. Battery was okay, nowhere near the 16 hours it claims, but still better than most laptops I was looking at.

I made the decision to bring it back and spend the extra on the XPS. I'm so glad I did. The screen is rated at twice the brightness and is perfectly view able in the sun (I have an antiglare 1080p panel), the speakers are perfectly acceptable, still not Macbook level, but MUCH better, and the keyboard is preferable to me. I also really dig the build quality of the XPS with the carbon fiber. Moral of the story, if you're between two and like one machine more, just pony up the money if it's not an obscene difference or you may regret it later.

    Can anyone identify this laptop?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:23 PM PDT

    Pictures.

I brought my laptop in for repair after some water damage over a month ago and the shop is refusing to fix it or return it. Basically feels like a scam, they keep saying "Oh we need a new part, two more weeks, or we'll just keep your laptop and your money and sell you a new one from our shop." Obviously I keep saying no, but at this point they're offering to give me the pictured laptop for free. Based on looks alone it looks shittier and more banged up than the brand-new Dell Inspiron I gave them, but I know some ASUS's are actually good computers so if it's a comparable trade I'm willing to negotiate accepting this laptop and a refund. However they're giving me zero information about the ASUS other than these pictures. Which makes me think this is just another attempt to scam me and keep my laptop/money and give me a POS, but if anyone can identify it from the pictures I'd like to at least look up the specs myself. (And of course I'd check the machine they gave me to make sure they weren't swapping out parts if I did accept it.)

    Thanks for the help.

    Display Doubts

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:43 PM PDT

I've been thinking of buying a new laptop, and considering I mostly use one plugged into my TV for media consumption, I'm not sure if i should go with an IPS display (which I'm struggling to find for under 600€ where I live) or stick with a disgusting old TN panel. When it's not plugged into my TV, I use my current laptop for school and web browsing, and while I've thought about using it on its own for watching movies, its TN display looks so unbelievably bad next to my TV, that I end up just plugging it back in. I'm also not sure how much better an IPS panel would be with my budget (apart from significantly improved viewing angles). Any advice is appreciated

Best Gaming Laptop Under 800 Worth In 2020

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:42 PM PDT

I’m trying to find the right laptop.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:27 PM PDT

So I've been looking at laptops for about 2 weeks now, but I have a very tight budget around 300$ and under. I'm looking for a cheap laptop, that runs smooth but could also run Minecraft decently. I'm also looking for a laptop that's battery life is pretty good. Any tips on looking for one or any laptops I should buy? Thanks for the help!

Discharged battery in new laptop out of box

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:22 PM PDT

I just purchased a Samsung Notebook 9 Pro 15" (model NP-940X5N-X01US) from Best Buy in-store. The manufacturing date on the laptop is 05/2019. It seems like a great laptop, but upon taking it out of the box and pressing the power button to test it, nothing happened. I plugged it into its charger and tried again, it booted up. After getting through Windows 10 setup, the battery read as 26% charge. This leads me to believe that the battery was at or near 0% when I purchased it, or at least below 26%. This model also has its power button on the side, slightly protruding and easily bumped. So it also seems possible the laptop could have powered on in the box.

Should I be concerned about this? Is the battery likely degraded from sitting on the shelf dead for up to 3 months? How common is it to receive a laptop with a discharged battery? Should I return it for another unit? I don't remember ever getting a laptop with a dead battery, and all of the smartphones I've purchased have had about 50% change out of the box.

And no, had it worked, I would not have continued to use it on battery without charging it for the first time. I only wanted to verify that the unit booted and see the initial charge level.

    Thoughts about this laptop?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 06:02 AM PDT

I'm looking for a lightweight, small laptop only for taking notes and watch some series on university. And I've found the Lenovo Flex 11 (windows 10 ver.) , that has some decent specs for a very low price. But I don't see any reviews of the notebook. And I wanted to see how it handles in terms of battery life and the perfomance of the Intel N5000.

Any help would be useful, thanks in advance.

    Struggling to decide!

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:42 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I was just hoping for some help really, I've recently started an IT degree, and start to go into networking, and coding end of the year with my CCNA and Python. I have a desktop pc which I can't always get to during the nights after work so I was looking for a laptop to study anywhere I get an opportunity, so it needs to be fairly light/portable. Thing is I am also on a budget £400 really so I have been looking on eBay but I don't really know what I should be looking for, there's so much choice and I just want to avoid being ripped off or picking something that wouldn't do the job. The laptop will mainly be for studying, conference tutorials, coding, and network labs, but I would like to also, of course, have decent quality video and sound as I will be recording and editing some of my work, and occasionally playing WoW and Darkest Dungeon. The study comes first of course, with being able to play games a bonus.

Many Thanks for any help, and any pointers!

PS this is also my 1st post, so if I have missed anything or something I would have benefitted from adding let me know.

    Swapping Similar Motherboards.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:30 AM PDT

Hey guys, so I searched everywhere for an answer but I have not had much success on this.

Now, I have a broken Acer E15 with the Core I3 8th Gen processor that I want to give my GF to repair so that she can use. I was advised that there was something wrong with the motherboard and I had another laptop that I used and kept on using so I didn't bother to repair the broken one. However, now that I'm giving it to my GF, I decided to look up some motherboards and the only results are the i5 motherboard versions of this laptop.

So my question is, given that they have the same chassis design from the outside, can I just get the i5 version and put it into the laptop? Thanks for any assistance.

Getting overwhelmed reading potentially paid laptop reviews. Desperately need help.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:07 AM PDT

So I am a pharmacy school student and we use laptops to do everything from taking exams to reference during simulations. I would also like to take notes on mine since buying 10+ notebooks a semester is a waste of trees and money. So maybe a 2 in 1 type thing?

My max budget is $700 but I would like to go less expensive if I can. I don't have much experience on buying computers and have absolutely no idea what to look for to compare.

Please help me. I seem to only trust Reddit reviews anymore, they've never let me down.

Trying to help my girlfriend find a laptop that suits her needs

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 10:42 AM PDT

My girlfriend is studying to become a graphic designer and she does photo editing aswell. She told me she wants to spend max 700€ on a laptop that would suit her needs. The problem is everytime I find anything good, it has a good processor but an awfull graphics card.I wanted a i7 for her but to afford an i7 I guess the gpu gets weighed down and it's not that good.

I would love to get some recommendations on any laptops you might know, I've searched everywhere and I always end up with the same problem.
