Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:18 AM PDT I'm moving into a rental for 3 months & need wifi in order to do school work. The woman who owns the home has the house wired for cable, but does not have cable (or internet). I have a modem and proper cords that I can use. How do I get wifi? Do I just need to get a hotspot? Do I just call local providers and ask if they can get me internet for the 3 months I require it for? How does this work HELP [link] [comments]

3 year old laptop’s battery life is now 30 minutes on lowest brightness. Is this issue fixable? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:53 PM PDT It's a Dell inspiron 15. Is it possible to get a battery replaced, and would that give it the original battery life of a couple hours? And what could be the cause of this issue, could it be related to Recharge cycles? Thank you. [link] [comments]
Better CPU or better GPU laptop Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:51 PM PDT I am looking at getting ASUS Tuf 505 gaming laptop. I tried a notebook, but it was too slow (the screen would take a while to respond, hp spectre), so i am just going for a cheaper and less bulky gaming laptop than the helios 300. On Amazon there is one for $929 with tax and has ryzen 7 3750H with a 1650 On Newegg there is a simillar one with ryzen 5 3550H and a 1660ti for $899 and idk about tax. Which one is better? Or is there is a different laptop any of you would recommend? [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:39 PM PDT Hey I currently have a G3 laptop by dell, My laptop , was wondering if any of you had this PC and what case do you use. I am looking for a protective sleeve that will fit in a back pack. Does the case need to have the exact dimensions of the laptop or could it be an inch larger in one dimension? Thanks [link] [comments]
Laptop specs aren't easily discernible, the industry really needs more cohesive marketing Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:13 AM PDT I've been searching for a laptop for a few weeks now, and what I've concluded about the process is that it's not very straight forward. My desires were very few, and all I wanted was:
Well, the good news is that the processor was very easy to search for. I was able to find many offerings with a quick google search. The bad news is, the other very simple requirements I had were near impossible to correctly find in a search. When it comes to searching for a laptop's memory, not only is there no option to search for single-channel vs dual-channel memory, they don't often tell you in the specs either. Sometimes RAM has one stick and it's soldered in, unable to be removed. Sometimes it has two sticks but one is soldered in. Sometimes it has one stick and it can be swapped. Sometimes it has two sticks and both can be swapped. Sometimes it has two slots but they only put in one stick... To make things more complicated, the same laptop brand and line with different processors will often have different memory options in this regard! With some of the products that have been on the market longer, kind souls have posted information about the inner workings of said laptops that can be found after an intensive, very specific search into a model number. For newer products, good luck finding out what's inside until you open it up yourself. The hard drive is slightly less annoying, but still not easily discernible from a quick glance. There are some brands that will just put "1 TB HD", and sometimes they're SSD and sometimes they're HDD. There are brands that will put "1 TB SSD" and sometimes they're SATA and sometimes they're NVMe PCIe. Once again, to make things more confusing, similar brands and product lines will not always have the same type of hard drive. The only saving grace seems to be that some companies are figuring out that NVMe PCIe style hard drives are becoming more commonly sought after, and are listing them as such. But for just about every search parameter you're limited to lumping in SATA SSD's with NVMe PCIe SSD's, and forced to spend a good chunk of time searching for model numbers to determine exactly what it is you're getting. The bezel sizes are getting more highly advertized, typically along the lines of X% screen to monitor ratio. It would be really nice if as an industry it could be decided that certain percentages indicate different terminology for these. For example, 85% screen to monitor ratio or better would be branded as "Thin Bezel", 90% or better as "Ultra-Thin Bezel", and 95% or better as "Infinity screen"; or something similarly adequate. Currently, one brand's "thin" is not equivalent to another. Beyond this, there are a slew of other important factors that need to be made much more apparent in some sort of standardized format, port type being a good example. Some of the problems here are with the sellers who don't provide enough search options (or who don't list all the specs given by the manufacturer), and some of the problems are with the manufacturers who don't offer some of this information freely. Either way, I think the industry needs to be more generous with some of this information as their market becomes more knowledgeable. [link] [comments]
Is this samsung NP900X4C worth $295? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:54 PM PDT https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/samsung-series-9-15-inch-np900x4c Someone is selling one on craigslist. I know it's old and my main concern would be the battery which I'm not sure is replaceable ... What do you think? [link] [comments]
Should I get an XPS 15 refurbished? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:49 PM PDT Found an XPS 15 refurbished in dell outlet for 960 with and i7 and 1050ti and I am considering purchasing it. However I am concerned about some issues I have heard about quality control and temps. I would mainly use it for school, light gaming such as apex, borderlands and indie games for a max of 3 hours at a time. I also do video editing but they are 1080p files and Max 30 mins. Would you still recommend the xps 15 and if not what are other similarly price suggestions? [link] [comments]

Uni Student SB3 or Gigabyte Aero 15 Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:35 AM PDT Brief history, I had a MacBook Pro 2011 which was great loved it's keyboard, port selection, power and portability (very good at that time). After a couple months at uni my parents surprised me with a MacBook 12in because they thought my MacBook Pro was too heavy. It was alot less powerful but insanely light so for 4 years it was an ok option, plus they bought for me as a surprise so it would be not cool for me to sell it or give it back. Now it's time to replace the MacBook (will go to my mother) with something more similar to my old MacBook 2011 (ppl seem to prefer the 2015 version but that 2011 will always be special to me). Because I changed Majors I'm now coming into my final year but will probs go on to do an Msc in Finance. Aero 15 Pros: expandable, great keyboard programable keyboard with numberpad, all the ports one might want, thin (for what it packs), good Battey life, h series CPU, ability to game most things I'd be interested in Cons: no touch screen, can't really use it to take class notes digitally (handwritten on screen) SB3 Pros: great keyboard, detachable screen to take notes on probs biggest Pro, you kinda get a tablet, great at productive due to its aspect ratio, trackpad, decent amount of ports (not as much as Aero15 tho) Cons: less powerful, no numberpad (pretty minor tbh), no news it it could come with an rtx 2060 but it could come with something less powerful as well, worse for gaming, U series processor I guess one would definitely be better for uni and note taking while conserving the ability to game, while the other would be better at gaming and other tasks not directly related to uni as well as possibly more future proof since it's upgradable Any suggestions or lines or argument for me to pick one over the other? Is there some laptop I might have overlooked that would perfectly fit my needs. Price wise I'm in the range between 1.8 to 2.6 € totally indifferent withing this price range as bad as it sounds [link] [comments]

Buying advice for a computing student Posted: 26 Aug 2019 02:58 AM PDT I need a laptop for uni where I will be studying computer science with a focus on game development and I need a good laptop to use. Preferably I would like it to have dedicated graphics, touchscreen UHD, with a good battery life, 16gb of ram, 512gb ssd, and an i7 or an i9 if there's a good deal. My budget isn't too strict so I'll take any suggestions. Also my specs aren't set in stone and I'm willing to compromise if I have to. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 10:28 AM PDT I'm looking to replace the wlan card in my laptop, but I'm not sure which cards I can put in it. The model number of the specific card I have now is AW-CE123H. When I look up replacement cards for the G750 series, i only find different cards for sale. Will this card ( https://www.ebay.com/c/1623265107 ) fit my laptop? It looks very similar, although the pins are a different pattern. This card is a lot cheaper than a replacement of what my laptop has. [link] [comments]

best laptop for art student/ artist? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:52 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $800-1000. canada * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** best specs for the money, good battery life would be nice as i will be entering college soon. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** i would like it to be relatively light but doesn't sacrifice specs to do so. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** windows. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** anything as long as it isnt bigger then 15.6. i dont want a massive laptop. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** i will definetely be gaming although not serious gaming. and the adobe suite (photoshop, premiere, and so on) as well as 3D programs such as blender. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** fortnite, minecraft, minecraft with mod packs and basically any game as long as i reach a comfortable fps. 60fps minimum is a must. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** i would like a good keyboard but it isnt top priority. i want it to last along time so decent build quality and touchscreen isn't necessary. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** im an artist. i need a colour accurate screen to draw and create content with. i dont need 4k as those destroy battery life, 1080p is perfectly fine as long as it has good colours. also im tired of my current laptop and how it run things so a dedicated graphics card is a must as i just want to play games when i want and not constantly be met with disappointment. i just want a good laptop that will last me along time and lets me be an artist and gamer. Price of a decent laptop thats not too expensive? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:21 AM PDT So i don't know whether this type of question belongs here but I don't have a lot of knowledge about laptops so i'm trying my luck here. So basically i'm looking for a laptop that can run all school related things normally and that can handle somewhat normal games. I now have a dell vostro 3550 which is just too old at this point. From the little knowledge I have i would prefer an i7 processor because I believe they're stronger than the i5 and most low budget laptops offer those. I'm hoping to pay less than 500 euro's/dollars but i understand if that is not enough. I hope you guys can help. (for the ones who game think of running games like the Sims 4, terraria and cs:go) [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:00 AM PDT I need help picking out an affordable laptop and could really use advice. It would literally just be used for assignments (turning in essays, homework, etc) and possibly taking notes. Freshman, kinesiology major if that makes a difference. Any advice for a clueless Luddite would be much appreciated lol! [link] [comments] |
