When in doubt: Complain to the FCC Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:51 AM PDT After fighting an intermittent internet issue for 5 months and 15+ questionable technicians later I submitted a formal complaint to the FCC. My internet was fixed within 72 hours. Optimum, my ISP, blamed it on everything: - Cabling behind the wall - My equipment - Too many people using internet? - Weather After the complaint, I was reached out to by their home company immediately and turns out, they needed to splice a wire and fix a issue with the main line on their end. Check your signal levels, if your ISP doesn't get your shit resolved in a timely manner file a complaint. It actually does something. Wish I would've known this 4 months ago. Also, screw Optimum. Update Bonus because F Optimum: They brought me a refurbished replacement modem that broke within 30 minutes of installation before the FCC complaint. I open it up - and it's full of roaches that scurried out. https://imgur.com/gallery/yFMRg8X .. [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to boost an apartment complex's wifi for my room? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 07:37 PM PDT I moved into an apartment building where I'm sharing wifi with probably ~100 people. There's no ethernet hookup for my PC so I'm using a bridge from my laptop to my PC to get internet. It sucks. Is there a way to boost it? Would a wifi repeater help? Something else? Should I see if I can get my own internet and router separate from what I'm paying for with my lease? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2019 07:43 PM PDT I've just gotten a nice modern router mesh system (3x3 MIMO with 802.11ac and Ethernet backhaul), and I noticed it has the option to enable a (passworded) guest network on a separate SSID. I know guest networks separate guest users from seeing any of your devices connected to the primary private SSID via VLAN, but I was wondering if there was any downside to keeping the guest network enabled when no one's using it. I thought maybe it might take up one of the antennae, or otherwise might eat up some of the available spectrum available to devices on the regular network, but I'm not sure. Should I keep it enabled by default, or is it best to keep it off until needed? [link] [comments] |
Verizon FIOS router/modem as extender? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 06:21 PM PDT Hello, I'm trying to extend my fios internet in my house. My house is set up to where the ONT box with ethernet cable is in the basement, and I have that connected to the G1100 modem/router. The WiFi is pretty weak throughout the house with it being in the basement and the 5ghz drops out often. I had an old MI424WR rev 1 modem/router and wanted to know if I can use that upstairs to extend my wireless network. I only have Ethernet cable in the basement going from the Verizon box to the ONT, but I have coax on every floor. Is it possible to set it up just with coax? I will have no way to get Ethernet from the G1100 to the MI424WR. I would appreciate some assistance. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
How can I see the life traffic of my network? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:28 PM PDT I want to see the live traffic of my network to make sure that my download is on my VPN. The default Comcast router does not have that ability. Anyone have any free programs that I could use for this? [link] [comments] |
Feedback on a router/modem combo for 500mb service Posted: 21 Aug 2019 05:54 PM PDT Hey all, Been doing research on modems and routers as I'm moving apartments soon and switching my service from Comcast to RCN. Ive done a lot of digging about 3.0 v 3.1, Puma v Broadcom, channel numbers, advertised speeds vs actual speeds, and frankly its just given me a headache. All I really want to know is if a Netgear cm600 (found a solid deal on ebay for a open box $50 model) and a TP Link AC1200 will be a solid combo to support 6-8 devices (3 phones, 2 laptops, ps4, guest phones etc) streaming, and casual online gaming for a small 800sqft apartment. RCN says anything above 500mb they recommend a 3.1 but those are a little out of my price range. [link] [comments] |
Is a tp link archer c90 the same as a c9? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 07:44 PM PDT I have an archer c90, and I'm looking to install new firmware. Is the c9 and the c90 one in the same? [link] [comments] |
Student House Setup - Advice Needed! Posted: 21 Aug 2019 03:35 PM PDT Moving into our student house in a month, the house is about 180m2 and will have 7 of us living there. Our main use will be general uni work and streaming, a couple of gamers in the house but nothing more than basic PS4 games. Now here's the issue - we have one ethernet port in the whole house and the top speed we can get for our area is 67mbps. The house is rented so we can't go cutting out new ethernet ports in the wall and the landlord certainly won't do it himself. Main advantage is that the house is pretty secluded so few neighbours with networks surrounding us. What are our best options here to ensure coverage and the top speed we can get? I know this is a stretch so I'm not expecting much but want to maximise the potential. Curious to how others would approach it? [link] [comments] |
Have enough knowledge to mess up Posted: 21 Aug 2019 06:20 PM PDT Alright, so, I wired 4 wall jacks, 2 upstairs, 2 downstairs, and one of the upstairs jacks is getting less speed than the rest. Breakdown of my setup: I have Comcast/Xfinity. Modem comes in through middle floor and has 4 ports. I ran patch cables from those ports to 4 wall jacks. 2 lead upstairs, 2 down. Using Cat5E cables. The wall jacks are Cat6 RJ45 however. I wired all the jacks using B color band on both ends. All the patch cables I have are wired T568B on both ends. Three of the connections net 180MBPS and the last one nets 40MBPS. My desktop can't detect it if wired either, but the faster speed one it can. I tried doing a wire test, and it says Open, but ports 1/2 flash. However, again, all are wired the same, and all did that. A) Not sure why 1/2 flashed, B) not sure why 1 is significantly slower still. (Edit: just retested all say Pass 1-8). I'm kind of at a loss, but since I also don't know what I'm doing, I thought I'd try here. Thanks in advance for even reading this, let alone if anyone can provide help. Edit: I'm also not sure if this is the best subreddit for this, so aim me elsewhere if need be. Edit 2: also posted on r/network [link] [comments] |
Voice modem separate better or does it matter? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 04:56 PM PDT I just got a Spectrum DOCSIS 3.1 eMTA. Before I was using a SB6141. I was wondering should I hook my landline up to the eMTA too or keep it separate? Will it affect the performance of my Internet because its processing phone service too? [link] [comments] |
Purpose of 110 Connection Blocks? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 01:09 PM PDT Hello All. I'm relocating some network gear from my hot attic to an indoor closet, and plan to use a 110 block in the attic to extend the Cat6 runs. I have a 110 block and punch down tool, but my question is whether I need to use the 4 pair connection blocks, and what their purpose is if I manually punch down each wire? Do they just cap each contact and keep out FOD, or do they actually terminate all 4 pairs at once in lieu of using a punch down tool? Example of the connection blocks I'm talking about: Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2019 12:26 PM PDT I need to remotely control a computer(forwards input, gets display) on my home network from outside. I am currently using SSH but I'm not sure if this is a good idea(SSH from public network to my home PC)? Should I go with VPN? SSH? Or use both? My current setup: When I am on a public network, I SSH by entering <home network's public IP address>:<my SSH port>, then the home router port forwards to my PC [link] [comments] |

Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:46 PM PDT Hey all, so I have two routers on my homes network, one my PC is directly connected to, along with my server tower, and the ISP's. Wanted to set up a MC server for the boys, but the problem I have is I need to double port forward due to having two subnets. How would I go about doing this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2019 01:52 PM PDT Is there any way I could configure a VLAN in OpenWRT that I could put the VLAN ID into my UniFI. So that user connected to that SSID will be isolated into its own VLAN? Can't figure out how to setup vlan in OpenWRT. [link] [comments] |

Hard to explain - trouble with a Wifi to Wifi router (not an access point) Posted: 21 Aug 2019 12:20 PM PDT I have this odd device that is a pocket router that functions as a power bank and NAS (sort of). The reason I got it is you can connect it to wifi, and then share the connection over wifi. The process usually goes: 1) Go somewhere with wifi (let's say a relative's house.) Get the password. 2) Turn on device, connect to it, and navigate to web config page (from a web browser), and from there, tell it to connect to the wifi. Enter password. 3) The device restarts, and when it boots back up, you can connect to it and use the internet. This is handy with my family because with a wife and 4 kids, there are a lot of devices to connect. There's the phones, and the ipads, and the kindle, and the Switch, etc. Setting up one device one time and having everything connect through it is great. BUT - I cannot figure out what to do on something like a hotel network, that says "please accept the terms of service". I have no way to click a box or whatever on behalf of the router. I had thought that I could have it log on to the network and then connect to the terms page on a device, but it seems to be a no go. I guess I'm looking for any ideas on a way to do this. Is strong wifi signal always better than weaker wifi signal ? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 11:57 AM PDT I have asus usb-ac56 wifi adapter and my mobo z390 aorus pro wifi with intel cnvi wifi. Usb adapter gets better signal than mobo wifi but mobo wifi gets slightky better download speeds and more stable connection in online competitive games. I'm not 100% sure but integrated wifi feels better. Is this possible? My modem ui says Asus 5ghz 65-72 dbi Mobo wifi 70-78 dbi Asus 2.4ghz 50-55 dbi Mobo wifi 55-60 dbi 5ghz much better than 2.4 ghz on both adapter despite having weaker connection. I get 31-33 mbps with both of them. My connection 35mbps. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2019 11:28 AM PDT I can't seem to find a straight answer in regards to the Edgerouter X. I have Rogers Gigabit internet (1Gbps down and 50mbps up) and when I run straight from the modem (HITRON 4852) it seems every few days gaming is super laggy, pings high etc. Download speeds are never affected. I was thinking of getting an Edgerouter X (my old DIR-655 isn't up to the task of Gigabit) but I keep seeing some people say it won't go above 500, and some say it won't do more than 1Gbps combined (which is fine for me, I'd be happy with 950 down and 50 up), but I don't know who to believe. I'm thinking its the 1Gbps combined that is correct, meaning it won't do full duplex Gigabit. Before I go out and drop $70CAD on one, I'd like to know if its worth my time or if I should be looking somewhere else (someone mentioned Archer C7, but I don't know how it compares). I don't care about wifi (I'd hook my old DIR-655 up as an AP) as much as I care about a router/switch that won't cause me lag (99% of what I do is through ethernet). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2019 11:26 AM PDT So I've noticed my ping on games like Fortnite going up from what was <10ms to hovering around 30-50ms these days and videos on Reddit and Youtube are loading really slow sometimes. I have Charter 100Mb service, so this really should be an issue. I have an ER-X as my main router off the cable modem, and two gig I used to have QoS on at the ER-X, but now it doesn't seem to do much when it's been turned back on. Should I be using OpenWRT QoS or the ER-X, and if the ER-X, what can I do to tweak it so it works better than it seems to be right now? EDIT: I do have two switches as well (one in basement, one in attic), but I have two wireless routers one for upstairs and down. They are just passing DHCP etc. through. My PC right now is connected directly to the attic switch. My Macbook goes through the wireless router however, but I haven't done too many tests on it yet. [link] [comments] |
Router with remote management capabilities for college dorm Posted: 21 Aug 2019 05:11 AM PDT I'm looking for a router/AP that is less than $80, with decent throughput shared by six roommates in college apartment, and one that will allow me to connect to it via VPN to remotely manage. Thanks! Edit: yes, lol, WiFi needed. Router + Access Point [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2019 11:04 AM PDT Hi, So on my pfSense router, I have created a VLAN called "Guest VLAN" with the tag 2. I have setup DHCP and everything. I am trying to setup my Cisco access point (Aironet 1130AG). I already have 1 SSID setup without a VLAN that works fine. When I try to add my second SSID with the VLAN, it says "ERROR; VLAN settings on the current SSIDs are incompatible with this setting. All current SSIDs must be deleted to change this setting." Posted: 21 Aug 2019 06:57 AM PDT Are there decently priced Home/ SOHO Routers that do this? By themselves? To Monitor & Log home ISP Internet Uptime/ Downtime using a Router or similar (Non PC/ Mobile) devices? Is there a decent way to do this without depending on my Laptop/ Phone etc devices. But using a Device such as the Router itself (IDEAL & PREFERABLE) (Forward / outbound checks or Inbound from certain sites mentioned here) https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1351974-monitor-internet-downtime/ That way I have a quantity/ quality timeline data log for the local ISP as to how much up/ down time I get. Long shot: I am wondering if an Amazon Fire Stick device / Alexa Echo Dot or something similar could be tasked to do it? Maybe a Fire Stick sideload Android App that can LOG with regular checking? PS: Also, I wouldn't mind using PRTG (allows Free handling of less than 100 devices) but I can't keep it awake all the time. But if it can extract some SNMP or similar data from my ROUTER and my Gigabit switch (Pro Curve) then I don't mind that either. [link] [comments] |
