Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:55 PM PDT So I am planning a network for a student house with 9 people living in it. (Here is my current plan) Any tips would be much appreciated. Our internet connection is only 70Mb/s so any ways to reduce bandwidth consumption will be appreciated. I'm planning on using Pi-Hole to stop adverts from using up bandwidth. [link] [comments] |
Want to run Ethernet through my house. Posted: 15 Aug 2019 08:02 AM PDT I have been look at runny cable through my house but I am unsure at what cable I would need to use. I'm planning on running the cable from downstairs in my house up to the attic and then down into my room behind the drywall. I was thinking about using cat 5e cable but then wasn't sure whether to future proof and use cat 6 just wondering what people would recommend as this is the first time iv ever done anything like this and have just started to get into home networking? Also my modem is located directly underneath the fuse box and I was wondering if running the cable by the fuse box would cause a lot of interference as I have read that you need cables to be at least a foot away from power cables. Hope this all makes sense and thank you for the help. Edit: thank you to everyone that replied it was very helpful and informative to what I need! This sub is so helpful and I'm very happy that I found!! Have a lovely day everyone! [link] [comments] |
1. Run the wire, 2.enclose the walls 3.nick the wire with a multitool Posted: 15 Aug 2019 05:23 PM PDT Picture of the carnage: https://imgur.com/a/czJ0gI0 My hopeful eyes think that I just got the insulation. What do you guys think? Re-pull this? install an inline connector? The backstory is that I bought a house that just needed a little work and a bit of paint. A series of decisions led walls coming down, rewiring, etc. It's been about a year and I'm finally closing up the walls and finishing some open projects. I was cutting in a box for electrical and I forgot I had pulled some slack in the network cable which allowed it to droop down to where I was cutting. Sure enough, I nicked the stupid thing. Does anyone think it'll just heal on its own? [link] [comments] |
HooToo Tripmate Titan hotel wi-fi sharing question Posted: 15 Aug 2019 07:15 PM PDT Hello, I bought this travel router so that I can share the singular device wi-fi access that we will be getting during our hotel stay. The process states on the FAQ that I should connect my phone with TripMate in order to proceed. However, is there any difference if I were to do the process on my laptop instead? Would there be any difference in the shared wi-fi's speed on the phone vs laptop? Or is there a specific reason for it to be done on my phone? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
A way to extend wifi throughout the apartment Posted: 15 Aug 2019 04:27 PM PDT We have been having trouble with the internet not being able to reach certain parts of our apartment for the past few months and have been calling our local Internet Provider about it recently. They have been no help into fixing the situation at all. Our Mbp is always around 5 or just completely 0 in my moms room and recently the living room was just messing up as well. I was wondering if there is anything that can help with boosting that or giving a better signal from the router to other parts of the apartment Im not good with all of this internet stuff so any suggestions would work, thanks! Need Help With Extending Wifi Signal Posted: 15 Aug 2019 07:52 AM PDT Hi there! I have a situation where there is a garage separated from the main home (call it about 50 feet from the router), and on the second floor of the garage, the internet signal is very weak, or at times, non-existent. What's the best fix here that isn't complicated? A mesh extender? Wireless bridge? Something else? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Best option to extend Wifi range and speed [fibre in NZ] Posted: 15 Aug 2019 06:20 PM PDT Hi guys, I've recently moved in to a double storey house ~200sq metres combined with fibre internet [1 gig/sec] I am currently using the router provided by the ISP. I noticed in my house we have 3 phone line ports. 1x downstairs, and 1x in each room I've used that 1 router to test all 3 ports and note they are all working well in terms of having internet connectivity. I have my copmuter upstairs and a PS4, Smart TV and steam link downstaris that i plan to link to my computer I am wondering how I can extend my WiFi range in the best way. So far, after reading this i've thought about 2 options:
I've heard about plate switches and termination point that I will need to locate. How do i go about doing this and what else do I need for this option? Also, are there any other options to do this well? Edit 200sqm. not 2000sqm [link] [comments] |
CM500-100NAS Troubleshooting Help Posted: 15 Aug 2019 10:08 AM PDT Ranging from 15 minutes to hours, my internet connection cuts out. Typically I can hear other people over VOIP for another 20 seconds before that also cuts out. Any devices streaming, gaming, etc become non-responsive and lose their connection. I thought it was probably the router, but to be certain I removed the router from the setup and connected my desktop directly to the modem. After about 40 minutes online, the same connection issues. Power levels are between -6.2 and -1.1dBmV downstream and 42.9 to 43.9dBmV upstream. Is it the modem itself that is faulty? I have had it for about 2.5 years. ISP is Cox and provides 100/15mbps Thank you to anyone reading this for your time. I'm not very experienced with networking. [link] [comments] |
Download speed slower than should be Posted: 15 Aug 2019 07:35 PM PDT My download speed should be 20 Mbps but I usually only get up to 10 Mbps. My internet is provided by line of sight tower. I don't seem to have a modem in my house for this system, all I seem to have is a box that provides power to the receiver on the roof. Is it possible I'm being throttled or is my service just poor? [link] [comments] |
Why does my 50Mbps internet suck Posted: 15 Aug 2019 06:34 AM PDT When i check my Wifi Status it stays around the 50Mbps range but when i do internet speed tests it is never above 0.3Mbps up and down why? and when i go to actually download something i cant get above 125 KB/s is there something throttling my connection or is this normal? Need the absolute best consumer grade router with features I would actually use. Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:10 PM PDT Hello! Since my trusty old WRT54g back in the days of Hamachi and port forwarding, I have been completely out of the loop with routers. I am about to get fiber (Beanfield) at home with a symmetrical 500Mbps connection. I live in a 1,000 sqft. condo in downtown Toronto, Canada. My current modem/router combo is a CODA 4582 - Hitron (Rogers) which seems to provide decent speeds (900-1100 Mbps wired and 300-400 Mpbs wireless) with good signal coverage throughout the condo. Now that I have to return this modem/router combo, I would like to purchase a router that suits my needs (rather than paying $120 for a TP-Link Archer C5400 v2 from Beanfield). I am clueless as to the advances in router technology in the last decade and would appreciate any assistance this subreddit has to offer. I am not sure whether the 300-400 wireless speeds I was seeing before were due to a bottleneck of my modem/router or my wireless device - the wired connection is obviously not an issue. Three main devices will be connecting over WiFi:
Ideally I would like the following:
Money is not an object as I would like something that I can use in a larger home down the line. Ideally I don't want to pay for flashy 'gamer' upgrades that don't add any value but I would absolutely pay for a feature that has its uses outside of a very specific niche. [link] [comments] |
Changing CL router to a Switch Posted: 15 Aug 2019 04:55 PM PDT Hey all; general tech question. Landlord just changed our house over to Centurylink 1G from Comcast and we just had our wiring setup; the router that CL supplied isn't bad but the house is quite large and with many walls we have had a mesh router from Orbi. Not being particularly tech savvy; I understand we need to switch the CL router over to an ethernet switch and then to run that into the orbi mesh system (as far as I understand) How do I go about this...? Do I have to go into the admin settings within the CL router itself; or is there something else that I'm able to do...? Cheers. [link] [comments] |
VPN stopped working after Windows Update Posted: 15 Aug 2019 04:40 PM PDT I don't know if this is the correct subreddit to post about it, but I have been having issues with my network. I would use Open VPN, and it worked absolutely fine until Windows updated my PC. I had some latency issues with my internet connection at first, but a tech came by and fixed the problem. I have pings revolving around 40-50ping, there is no packet loss, and it seems stable. However, I tested the VPN router and I still get pings ranging from 500-1K ping. It looks like there's an issue with the VPN servers? I switched over to Express VPN to test if it was just OpenVPN that was wasn't working, but I still get the same issue. Right now I can't even connect to my router. Would the issue be with the Windows Update or the VPN? I am using an Open VPN Router, more specifically a Netgear NightHawk r7000 with the tomato firmware ac1900 flash router. My Windows version is 1903; OS Build: 18362.267 edit: it connects after many attempts but it still has pings around 300-1K. [link] [comments] |
A Little Help Understand/Advice! Posted: 15 Aug 2019 04:11 PM PDT Hi, so I'm using the Spectrum gateway (modem/router in one), and I'm paying 60 a year for it. I, unfortunately, pay $71 a month for 100mbps download and 10mbps upload service. I have decided that I want to change to another modem/router, but unsure of a few things. 1) should I get a gateway or a separate modem and router? (I read having separate is better so I only have to change one if I want to upgrade a certain thing) 2) from whichever you choose in 1, which types do you recommend? 3) from the ones you recommended in 2, does it have anything to do with me having a Verizon Wireless (or any company for that matter) mobile carrier? 4) I live in Studio City, CA and am told that this is the best service for my area. Anyone know any other/faster/better priced services? Any other inputs would be great if I need to know! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Aug 2019 02:58 AM PDT Hi, so i have played online games my whole life. I like being competitive and even tho i am not the best player i like having as much of a competitive advantage as i can get. This has been happening for half a year or so, i basically get 20 to 25 ping higher than normal in all online games, (for example if i used to get 20-25 ping in siege i not get 40-45 in overwatch form 45 to 65-70 and i even tested in apex i get 55 instead of 40) I have gigabit fibre and the download speeds are consistent (800-940) and good at all times. I don t know what causes this. I have tried the Wtfast thing ((https://www.wtfast.com/ )and theyre net graph shows a way lower ping (especially in overwatch) in the 30s but the ingame ping is at 67 to 70. Whenever i test in online speed tests the results are good but for some reason in every game it just seems to be bottle necked by some random thing. Pc : I7 8700k , Asus Prime Z370-A Modem/router Provided by the ISP : HG8245H Stuff have tried : Messing with the router setting and resetting/booting it ( The ISP did a great job with those so no complains there) Updating the Network driver; Would it help to? - change the Ethernet cable (mb outdated/damaged) but again i get good download speeds (this is a bit tricky since it runs trough a wall and i would have to reattach the pluging after i run it -get another router? - i would have to run the signal tough the modem anyways and use it in bridge If you have any suggestions please do let me know. How to have a Captive Portal with TOTP based whitelisting Posted: 15 Aug 2019 08:56 AM PDT Hi there I am trying to set up an authentication scheme for my wifi network for home with which I can have the user enter a constantly changing 4-6 digit code based on the time (Like what you see in the MFA apps). Simple old Two-factor Authenticator. My plan is to have an easy way for people to login to the wifi network without having to deal with passwords, but still, be quite secure. I already have an Arduino that changes numbers on a LED lighting display which I can later sync to the changing numbers, and a source which defines the current valid numbers based on the time I am thinking about creating a Custom Captive Portal with which I can embed code to pull the current Two-factor Code. The main problem I am having is how to get a captive portal either on the main router or an offshoot device where I can have the user enter the number and then have them whitelisted in the main network and have access to everything like the printers and TV. At first, I was thinking about putting it on a raspberry pi but some people say that's a bad idea or just not feasible. After reading a lot, I am just confused now. I mean I was looking for "consumer" grade routers like nighthawk level stuff, but none of them seem to support custom captive pages. I guess if I had that option from the main home router I could just build it into there. Anyway in summary what I want the user to experience:

How to bypass Carrier-grade NAT? Posted: 15 Aug 2019 06:33 AM PDT I used to play Age of Empires 3 on GameRanger but recently, I changed my ISP. I didn't even know about these complexities of networking etc. With the new ISP, I couldn't connect to others on GameRanger and it told me that you have a Symmetric NAT Router and you should do port forwarding. Someone from my country told me that this ISP uses CG NAT and port forwarding, DMZ, No-IP etc. won't work. The only solution I've found till now is to use VPN, but the ping is too damn high with VPN. Without VPN, my ping on Speedtest is 2-4 ms and with VPN, it is 140-200 ms.Is there any other solution for bypassing this stupid CG NAT? I've heard of things like portmap.io etc. I just want low ping so that I can play lag-free. And yeah, my ISP isn't offering static IPs. Please help. [link] [comments] |
Wifi disconnects and looses internet connection randomly Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:52 PM PDT Hi! I have a combined modem and router box from my ISP. After my Tor relay started to get some traffic the network has been experiencing some issues. It often restarts/reconnects/looses internet connection. I think this is because the router can't handle all the NATting. Should I buy a router and put the modem in bridge mode? Or should I do something else? [link] [comments] |
I got a new router and my Wifi isn't showing up. Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT I just got a new router. The old one worked fine but was slow and old. I plugged in the new one just like the old one and the wifi works on my pc which is directly connected with a wire. But I can't connect any of my other devices. The wifi isn't showing up when I go to my phone or anything else. What do I do? [link] [comments] |

Arris BGW210-700 & Cisco EA6500 AC1750 router - Want two subnets. Posted: 15 Aug 2019 12:39 PM PDT I have the two routers listed above. On the Arris ("ROUTER1"), I am not familiar enough with the settings to know what to choose to make this option available. The Cisco router ("ROUTER2") spells things out a little easier so that's a little smoother. The idea is this: ROUTER1 is connected to the fiber connection. ROUTER2 is connected to ROUTER1 on the GB ports using an ethernet cable. I want ROUTER1 to be 192.168.1.0/24 and ROUTER2 to be 192.168.2.0/24 for example. What options on ROUTER1 do I set to make this happen? The only options I see are CASCADE, IP PASS, etc. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Wireless connection between router and switch? Posted: 15 Aug 2019 08:28 AM PDT I'm going to set up my own network for a small home lab. The modem and router is in another room and cable is unfortunately not an option between that room and mine. Is there a way to connect the router and the switch wirelessly? I don't know much about wireless networking so I'm not sure what I have to buy. The switch is a Cisco SG 100D-08 and I haven't bought the router yet (open to suggestions). https://i.imgur.com/XKTCiZM.png Currently the solution is using a powerline adapter and I'm getting 20/10 Mbps and we're paying for 80/80. Posted: 15 Aug 2019 11:43 AM PDT My Internet test gets me 30mb down and 4mb upload. When I'm downloading anything the speed is 4mb(It's using the upload speed).
