    Business-class municipal fiber internet (100/100 $139/m) vs Cox cable (300/30 $84/m)?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 01:48 PM PDT

Hey gang, I'm wondering if I should switch from Cox and with my city's fiber internet. I'm currently paying $83.58 per month for 300/30 Mbps + 1TB data cap. So far I'm happy with my Cox service; I work from home and the speeds are fine. I'm interested in a fiber connection to support my local utility and fiber internet in general, however the speed/price is drastically different from what I imaged it to be. I understand this would be "business" package, but my monthly bill would be $139 and my speed drops to 100 Mbps. So, I'm kind of going the wrong direction in both lanes there. There is no data cap with the fiber that I'm aware of, other than my average daily bandwidth usage can't go over 5 Mbit/s.

Do you think its worth paying nearly double for 1/3 the speed for business-class fiber internet? What exactly makes business class different from residential? Also, I find it interesting that Cox offers gig service but the best fiber offering is 200 Mbps (for $250/month.)

    Rural Cellular Internet

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 06:22 AM PDT

I work from home in a rural location and have a MOFI4500 w/ AT&T SIM and two Wilson directional antennas (link). I have been using this setup at my current home for over 2 years and it has worked almost flawlessly the whole time. All 3 of us can stream simultaneously, and I can participate in conference calls and screen sharing without issue while others are streaming. Speeds are typically 25Mpbs+ down/8Mpbs+ up. However, the MOFI tells me that my signal strength is poor (-105dBm to -115dBm). I have done speed tests at the same time my MOFI was saying that I had very poor or no connection, and gotten 45Mbps dl!?!

Now to the issue... We have a purchase contract on a new house (my dream house) that is contingent on securing suitable internet service. There are no ISPs that service the address (thanks for nothing, NY state's 'internet for everyone' initiative!!), and I am not interested in satellite due to the latency. To test my current setup, I took my MOFI and antennas (mounted on a pole) to the new house yesterday. We started with the antennas below the roof line and got good signal strength (-86dBm) but very low speeds. As we raised the antennas, the signal strength improved to -80dBm at the highest point we could get the antennas (because we were standing on a ladder holding the pole), which was about 3' above the roof line. At that point, dl speed was up to 7Mbps.

According to cellreception.com, there are two AT&T towers in the area, but they are 20ish miles away. I can see a tower from the main road in town that is 3ish miles from the house, in the general direction of the house, but it doesn't show up on the map for any of the major carriers. There is a Verizon tower within 7 miles, according to the map, but my VZW phone only gets one bar (-99dBm) while standing on the ground. When I spoke to Verizon support, they said the nearest VZ tower was 38 miles away.

I need higher speeds to insure my work is not interrupted - probably just a couple more Mpbs up and down. I need even higher speeds to allow my family to continue the same internet lifestyle we've grown used to, but it's not critical that we be able to stream during work hours. And if we have to stop using Sling, Netflix, etc. altogether, it's not the end of the world. But I obviously have to be able to work.

    So my questions are:

    1. Why, when I get better signal strength at the new house, do I get worse speeds? We don't suffer from the 22G data throttling where we are now, due to low tower congestion - could that be what is going on at the new location? I don't know where we are in our current billing cycle (the plan is through a 3rd party provider, 4GAS), so am unable to determine if we've gone over the cap, but it's very possible we have. However, the area is just as rural as my current area, so tower congestion doesn't seem likely.
    2. Is it reasonable to think that the higher we get the antennas, the better the speeds will be?
    3. Is it reasonable to think that if I got better antennas, I would get better speeds?

I am willing to spend some money to get this working, but I'm looking for some equipment recommendations and confidence that I can get the speeds I need to work so that I can continue with this very important purchase. I only have a few more days to decide.... should I go for it and hope for the best? The sellers are still living in the house, so continued testing will be difficult, and semi/permanent installations will not be possible until after we close.

    What would you do?

    TIA.

How to connect my own router to att fiber

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 06:38 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I am looking to try and connect my linksys ac1900 router to my att fiber that we just recently got at my house. I was told by the att technician that I could just plug my router into the back of the att router however i have read that that isnt a great idea as it could cause problems specifically in gaming which is something we do alot of at the house. Is that true or would it be fine? If not, does anybody know how i could do an IP passthrough? I am unfamiliar with IP addresses/DHCP and all that stuff and I am not trying to mess up anything in the router settings. Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks

Is the Ac86u the best choice out there for ~$200?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 04:38 PM PDT

So I've recently moved to a new apartment and my ISP provided me with a router that's thoroughly shit. The wifi don't work in my bedroom when I have the router by the TV (apartment is 55 sqm with no concrete walls). I'm looking for a setup that would max cost me about 200 dollars.

What I run at home is:

    1 Xbox, wired

    1 Google home

1 Ikea trådfri hub (wired) with ~15 bulbs (zigbee)

    1 phone, 1 iPad

    1 laptop (wired at times)

    Eventually I'm looking to add

    1-2 Raspberry Pi (probably wired)

    1 TV (Wired)

What would you recommend for this? I've got an 100/100 fiber connection. I've been looking at ac86u but I've also been recommended the 68u at a shop but reading about it seems too old and I feel like a 50 dollar difference is worth it with the 86u? What about the 88u?

Seamless transition between two WiFi networks

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 04:54 PM PDT

I have two wireless routers. My main goal is to cover a large area in my home. I don't want both networks to have same ssid , because I wouldn't know which one I'm connected to, and the phone wouldn't choose the stronger signal( it would stay on the same network as long as it can). How could I make two differently named network act as a one network and bridge them seamlessly so my phone connects to the stronger one

So, someone got into my router...

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 07:11 PM PDT

Long story short, my router was dropping connection for the past month. I tried to get into the router administration page, and login failed due to wrong password. I'm meticulous about passwords and am 100% sure it was correct.

Red flag 2: I logged in to router administration some time ago (about three months) and noticed PPTP VPN turned on... I've never used PPTP and definitely did not have it turned on... but I didn't think anything of it. I should've reset everything then, but didnt. I turned PPTP off.

Red flag 3. I noticed a ton of port scanning a few months prior to that... but again, didnt think anything of it.

I hard reset the router today and set up a new network completely -- hard reset using the hard reset physical button on the router. New Admin password, new wifi password, everything.

The laptops on my network have pretty sensitive data on them, everything from corporate IP to other stuff I do not want getting out.

Should I be worried? What are the chances that a machine on this network could have been explored?

    Advice on Spectrum Signal Issues

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 06:48 PM PDT

For the past few weeks, I have had intermittent connection issues with my Spectrum internet service in NYC. My downstream channels usually come in strong (not too strong) Between +3 and +5 dbmv, with SNR of ~40, but I usually have about 50k uncorrected packets a day.

The biggest problem has been upstream channels. I have a 16x4 modem and in the past all up & down channels would provision. Now, whenever I reboot the modem I get all 4 upstream, but that quickly drops down to 1 within 20 minutes . That one channel will often rise to 54 dbmv during the day before cutting out completely.

I have been complaining to spectrum non-stop and they've already replaced all the inside wiring & splitter with no effect. One tech claimed that the outside cable drop was "in good condition", which wouldn't surprise me since its only about 5-7 years old.

Yet despite all of this, I still have a terrible connection problem. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could personally do to improve this situation? Would it make sense to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.1 modem? Would it have an easier time managing the poor signal?

Best router for 2 story house, multiple rooms?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 02:40 PM PDT

Hey all, have xfinity and while the speeds while literally standing next to the router are great, the connectivity and speeds are shit everywhere else in the house. The connection drops consistently in rooms and I'm really fed up. I have a 200$ netgear router which I thought would have been great but I'm looking now for something with good range. Any recommendations?

Has anyone gotten Plex to work with Aquantia 10Gbe NICs?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 06:08 PM PDT

I have two aquantia network interfaces, one is built into the motherboard of my main rig and the other is a pcie card in my server. Neither of them will allow remote access to plex. I also have regular gigabit adapters built into both motherboards, and they both work perfectly fine when enabled. Both my home server and main rig are running windows 10. I only have a gigabit switch (for now...) so all four adapters are plugged into that switch when they are enabled. I never have both adapters on the same computer connected and enabled at the same time because I don't want to deal with the potential headaches.

Upnp is disabled on my EdgeRouterX, and all ports are open using port forwarding.

Plex troubleshooting would definitely be off topic for this forum, but I was hoping that someone here might know something about the aquantia cards. Has anyone had any major issues with them? Has anyone gotten plex to work with them? Was there a trick to it?

    Weird nmap results

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 05:36 PM PDT

I'm a junior programmer with very little network experience trying to figure everything out. I ran nmap just to see what would happen (I have a Linux server with a hostname I was testing to see if it was working locally) and got some weird results. Now I don't know what exactly it is or means, or how it's coming up on my network. This happened on a few different devices.

Anyone know of IP cameras that don't phone home?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 09:14 AM PDT

I'm looking to setup a couple cameras for active monitoring. I was debating on using Raspberry Pi's and some webcams but I feel like that's clunky.

Anyone have recommendations on standalone cameras that I could monitor? I might eventually set them up to record to a device but I'm not sure if that's necessary at this moment.

I'm aware I can block any outbound traffic from IP cameras but would rather them not phoning home in the first place.

Why Do My Asus Routers Keep Dying?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 08:01 AM PDT

I have done three RMA's so far since March. I'm about to start a 4th...Absurd.

I do not know what is wrong. It's the RT-AC86U model. They work normally for a few weeks then become unresponsive with no LAN/WiFi connections.

My general setup: Netgear CM1100 modem -cat6- Asus AC86U -cat6- TP-Link unmanaged switch -cat6- wired clients + multiple wireless clients on 2g & 5g bands.

When the router "dies" all clients lose connection and the router itself lights up three of its LEDs. Reset button does nothing. WPS button reset does work but get this, after resetting, bandwidth on LAN and WiFi is only ~25Mbps on my 300/30 connection.

I am currently using my backup router, the Asus TM1900 model, and it is 100% reliable in the same setup.

Any help or ideas? Asus support has none.

    Cisco Multicast setup

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 04:08 PM PDT

To keep this brief. I have a Cisco Router/Switch (Cisco 897). My provider offers an IPTV service which uses multicast. I authenticate to the provider with PPPoE and learn my default route through this dialer interface. The physical interface is Gi8. The IPTV box is in vlan 200.

In order to get the IPTV to work I need to ensure IGMPv3 joins are sent to the provider on this gi8 interface and not inside the PPPoE connection. How would i achieve this?

Wondering the consequences of a poor 2 in 1 router/modem

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 12:04 PM PDT

Okay, so I have recently moved and when I was getting my internet set up, the guy said that my router was only shooting like 17/24 channels at acceptable speeds. I bought it through netgear (dont know the definite type, at work), but it's a 2-in-1 router modem. I bought the warranty but I think best buy declined to insure me. In the case that I can't get a new one for free, what would happen if I couldn't get a new one? Like would I just be running at 75% internet speed or would it all just suck? Netgear Nighthawk X4S modem?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 03:39 PM PDT

NETGEAR R7800-100NAS : Can the modem on this router be disabled or bypassed? Or does the NAS in the model number refer to something other than an internal modem (maybe optimized for network attached storage)? Actual specification differences between the R7800 and the R7800-NAS are very difficult to find.

PDA.Net Speeds Vs Tetherg Vs M1 Netgear (Speed issue)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 02:49 PM PDT

    1. I have a weird issue with PDANet that maybe someone can solve. I prefer PDANet for the only reason is that they offer Hide "Tether usage" as an option in addition to me using a vpn to hide network traffic. If i tether my USB C to my computer using PDA.Net i can get Maxim speeds of 40mpbs. Average is around 30mpbs (using sprint+ Microcell+VPN on and off speeds are the same) I don't use the wifi mode because it does not work 9/10 times.

    2. If i use Tetherg(Android App) and use Wifi Tethering to my laptop i can get speeds up to 100mpb (Sprint,VPN off) The only issue i ever have with Tetherg is the wifi connection drops every 1/3 of a second it does not affect my usage on my computer at all, unless i use my iPad than things like youtube says "you are off line" and it will connect back but i can stream videos all day long , but if i try to leave a like or something it disconnects and connects back again every 1/3 of a second.

    3. I have a Net M1 Hotspot, i can pull 120+mpbs if i have the correct Band and is tethered using my USB-C cable that i use for PDA.Net or using Wifi on the Hotspot. So no issue there.

So why am i bother about this... Well in my Area Sprint is chill i can use about 100GB's worth of data without no throttle. I have a micocell so i have great signal in my home. If i use PDA.Net my speed are no greater than 30mpbs on average.

If use Tetherg (android app) my speeds are greater with wifi tethering but if i connect to anything than my computer it sucks and my carrier can see what im doing and if use my VPN its fine but speeds drop in half. (first world problems)

Tools, Windows 10, PDA.Net desktop app. Note 9. (Forgive me of my terrible grammar : (

TL;DR - is PDANet app build holding it back? is a driver issue with the App itself? or does PDANet limits speed only 40 Mbps?

Arris SB 6183 ok with Comcast 400mbps plan

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 10:12 AM PDT

I just upgraded services to a 400mbps plan. I e seen reports of the Arris SB 6183 testing well with 300mbps connection, bit cannot find any resources about it's performance on 400mbps plan. I will not be upgrading to gigabit service anytime soon so don't really see the need to purchase a docsis 3.1 modem. Anyone have experience with the 6183 at speeds faster than 300mbps? Thanks in advance!

    Coaxial Splitter, signal loss impact

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 12:38 PM PDT

House was previously wired for cable with an 8-way POWERED coax splitter.

I've since switched to OTA antenna. Signal (mostly) works well with the current splitter. Every so often the most distant channel gets pixelated.

I really only need to share the signal to two outlets in the house—one for a cheapie TV in our kitchen and the other line goes to a HD Homerun box which serves the rest of the house. I have a 2-way UNPOWERED splitter. Given that I don't really understand the science behind splitting an antenna signal (signal loss), would the unpowered 2-way splitter be better or worse than the powered 8-way splitter?

Would signal quality improve if I continued using the 8-way splitter, but disconnected 6 of the coax lines that aren't actively needed?

If the best solution is a new powered 2-way splitter, I can buy one. But just trying to save a couple bucks if I can work with the equipment I already have.

    Thx.

    Better wifi in the basement?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 08:24 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm a student who rents a basement in Montreal so I can live there while I'm doing my studies. The Internet Package (unlimited downloads) and the router are owned by the people living on the ground floor.

However, I often have problems with the wifi: it's most of the time too slow, in some places in the basement there's just no signal at all, etc. It is frustrating because I work on dropbox and stream a lot, so I need a good and powerful internet.

What are my options to have a stable and fast internet in the basement? Should I get a wifi transmitter, use an ethernet cable, get my own Internet Package/ Router, or talk to the ground floor's renters about having a better Internet Package?

    Thank you

I'm posting this here because I recently installed my home networking which consist in: 2 AP, 1 router and the ISP modem.

Im pretty sure it has to do with the network cause before installing the APs it worked just fine. Maybe the chromecast device is trying to change from an AP to the router (the router also has wifi) or to the second AP so that makes it stop streaming.

    Setting up network over coax?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 10:52 AM PDT

G'day to you all, (Sorry for really long post)

I am trying to set up a home network that will use MINIMAL/zero Wifi. I have a 3 yr old home. No CAT5 ports, but tons of COAX ports. Home is fully furnished so I do not (nor does the wife) want to cut /drill/etc holes in our house to run cable. We have just internet, NO cable tv since we stream everything or watch on HD Antenna. The internet connection enters the house on the NorthEast side of house, connects to a cable modem, which then connects to 4 port Wifi router. ALL of that is within 5' of the connecting outside wall Downstairs/Basement.

    Here is my conundrum...

    DL is 100M

My wife is setting up her business office in the front room (top floor - Only 2 floors to the house) of the home - NorthWest side.

With the current setup, there is NO Wifi signal in the office. I had an AP setup (with Wifi output) in that room with Powerline connection from office to router room. Wifi wasn't the best, but still better than just setting up a wireless AP and outputting Wifi. Wife NEEDS solid connections.

moving along, we have a maintenance/laundry/furnace room in the center of the house, with 8-10 Coax cables of the house bundled/terminated INTO said maintenance room.

My thought is this... From the Router, get CAT5 adpted to coax, into the walls, into the maintenance room, into a switch (for future plans), back into another coax cable, through the walls up to the office, adapt back to CAT5, and finally connect to her latop/computer.

    Doable??? solid?

Please let me know your thoughts..

    YIAT
